Carabao Cup round-up: Newcastle scrape past Newport on penalties as Man City crush Burnley and Everton thump West Ham

NEWCASTLE edged past Newport on penalties after being given an almighty shock as Manchester City and Everton also booked their places in the next round of the Carabao Cup.
SunSport heads around the grounds to round-up the four cup matches from Wednesday evening…

    NEWPORT 1 NEWCASTLE 1 (4-5 on pens)

NEWCASTLE were just three minutes away from being dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the expense of League Two Newport.
Tristan Abrahams had given the hosts the perfect start with his fifth-minute strike.
And Newport – the lowest-ranked team left in the competition – looked set to stun Steve Bruce’s side.
But Jonjo Shelvey scored with three minutes of the 90 remaining to take the game to penatlies.

Despite a miss from Joelinton, the Newcastle survived the spot-kicks to progress to the next round.
Mark Gillespie saved Ryan Taylor’s effort and Brandon Cooper blazed over the bar to hand Newcastle the tie.
Callum Wilson, Fabian Schar, Shelvey, Jacob Murphy and Sean Longstaff all converted from the spot.

FERRAN TORRES announced his arrival at Manchester City with a dazzling display as Pep Guardiola’s remarkable record in this competition went on.

The £20.8million summer signing from Valencia scored his first goal for his new club soon after putting one on a plate for Raheem Sterling.
The England forward scored twice – his first club goals of the season.
But Sterling could have had a hatful as City threatened to hand out another cup hiding to Burnley.
Home goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell had looked set to ruffle Pep’s feathers as he made a string of excellent saves.
This cup may not be their top priority – but City are clearly not going to let it go easily as they stormed to a 3-0 win.

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN kept his superb form going with a sensational hat-trick to down West Ham.
The Everton striker scored in the 11th minute, only for Robert Snodgrass to draw the Hammers level in the first minute of the second half.
Richarlison put the Toffees back in front ten minute later, before Calvert-Lewin scored twice late on to complete his hat-trick.

Brighton 0 Man Utd 3: Red Devils into Carabao Cup quarters as Dean Henderson puts on another masterclass

HISTORY repeated itself inside eight days at Manchester United.
And David De Gea will once again have been sitting uncomfortably while watching at home.

United made it through to the last eight of the Carabao Cup with another three-goal away win, following their 3-0 triumph at Luton.
But once again, almost spookily, goalkeeper Dean Henderson delivered a moment of brilliance to keep his team 1-0 ahead.
And just like the tie at Kenilworth Road, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was thankful for his keeper’s outstanding stop with United then moving up a gear to score a couple of goals.
Henderson’s outstanding one-handed stop to deny Leandro Trossard not only proved this keeper is one hell of a talent.

But also that he is oven-ready to replace De Gea in an instant the moment he makes mistakes on a regular basis.
Judging by last season, that time could come any time soon.
And the same goes for Jordan Pickford with England even though, for the time being, Nick Pope looks to be Gareth Southgate’s unofficial number two.
Henderson, who arrived at United as a teenager before being farmed to various clubs out on loan, will not forget his United debut at Luton.

And on a rotten night on the south coast, the 23-year-old proved that his levels of concentration are supreme because for periods – like at Luton – he had little to do.
This skill is the sign of a top keeper, rather than one who makes nine decent saves before conceding a soft one.
Otherwise, this was not a game United fans will care to remember but they will not care if they end up winning their first trophy since 2017.
But they will not do it if they keep playing Odion Ighalo.
He delivered a laboured 79 minute performance at Kenilworth Road and was no better against Brighton before thankfully being taken off after Henderson’s save.
Earlier, he wasted the first decent chance as he rounded Jason Steele but stuck his effort into the side netting.
Juan Mata played the clever pass and it came after an impressive but patient United build-up.
    Brighton improved though.
Bernardo caused some problems down the left and their first chance came when Alireza Jahanbakhsh forced Henderson into a low save to his right
Yet a thoroughly disappointing opening half ended with a goal from Scott McTominay.
Mata discovered a burst of pace from somewhere and cruised past Dan Burn before being cynically fouled by the home defender, who deservedly earned a yellow card.

    7

Mata shone for the Red Devils on a rainy night at the AmexCredit: Reuters
But Mata got some revenge as his outstanding free-kick was met by McTominay who was allowed a clear run on goal by Bernardo, who appeared to have completely switched off.
The only player anywhere near McTominay was Eric Bailly but he was effectively brushed away by the Scotsman who nodded hoime.
Brighton manager Graham Potter will have been annoyed as his team had defended really well until that moment, when they were guilty of completely switching off.
The fine set-piece from Spanish midfielder Mata also meant he has been directly involved in 12 goals in his last 15 starts for United with four goals and eight assists.
With Brighton improving and United looking subdued – with Ighalo hopeless up front – Henderson delivered that fine stop from Trossard in the 67th minute.
And like that game at Luton, United improved once they brought on the cavalry from the subs bench.
Paul Pogba’s pass was met with a brilliant backheel from Donny van de Beek with Mata steering a shot through Lewis Dunk’s legs.
And the Frenchman sealed the tie with a well struck free-kick which seemed to take a slight deflection off Joel Veltman before hitting the net via the post.
But once again, the man United were thankful for was at the other end.
Henderson has still only played twice for United but he has delivered one hell of a statement of intent.
For the time being at least, we will still only see Henderson play in the next round of the Carabao Cup and maybe the odd Champions League game.

But quite clearly, this is a keeper with incredible self esteem who, putting it politely, is bloody confident.
Yet he is proving he can walk the walk as well as talking a good game and United’s long-time number one keeper now faces one hell of a battle for his place.
At this rate, Henderson could be United’s new No 1 by Christmas.

Watch as classy Tottenham star Eric Dier is first to console Mount after Chelsea ace’s penalty miss in Carabao Cup clash

TOTTENHAM star Eric Dier was hailed by fans for showing his class by consoling Mason Mount after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup exit.
Blues midfielder Mount, 21, missed the decisive spot-kick to send Spurs into the competition’s quarter-finals.

Timo Werner’s first Chelsea goal looked to be enough for Frank Lampard’s side before Erik Lamela pounced late on to send the game to penalties.
After nine perfect spot-kicks, Mount was left with Chelsea’s fifth due to Timo Werner suffering cramp.
The England International then stuck wide of the post as the Blues crashed out of the Carabao Cup.
Spurs players rushed to celebrate with keeper Hugo Lloris but fans noticed Dier go straight to Three Lions team-mate Mount to console him.

One tweeted: “Dier was in a similar position when he missed his penalty against Chelsea. He knows that feeling.”
Another said: “Respect Dier for this.”
A third added: “Class act from him.”
However, many fans also expressed their hope that Dier had washed his hands before wrapping them around Mount’s face.

Jose wasn’t happy but there was nothing I could do about it, nature was calling
Eric Dier on his second-half toilet trip

The Spurs defender had incredibly rushed to the toilet while the match was going on in the second half – with boss Jose Mourinho running after him.
Dier had the last laugh however as he shared a picture of the Man of the Match award sitting on the toilet on Instagram after the game.
He said: “After playing on Sunday it wasn’t easy, maybe that’s the reason I had to run off but we got through it!
“All of the staff and the players put the effort in.
“Jose wasn’t happy but there was nothing I could do about it, nature was calling.
“I heard there was a chance while I was off the pitch but thankfully they didn’t score.”

It’s not the first time the Spurs star has darted off the pitch during a cup game.
In fact, in Dier’s last domestic cup outing – the FA Cup penalty shootout defeat by Norwich, he surged into the stands to confront a fan.
He was charged by the FA for leaping over the advertising hoardings and racing up the West Stand to protect younger brother, Patrick.

Wasteful Chelsea don’t know how to kill a game and once again end match their own worst enemies after Tottenham loss

IT SEEMED like Tottenham were dusted before their Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea even began.
Jose Mourinho delivered a glum pre-match press conference pretty much ruling out their chances – then again he told reporters he was playing without a striker altogether, not even using a false nine.

This is a typical sulk from the former Chelsea boss, who is angry about a congested fixture period and injuries to some of his key players.
Of course, this was an issue for him and his team, but I wasn’t expecting such a negative and pessimistic approach to the first half from them.
Chelsea are used to teams sitting off and defending in numbers hoping to contain them whilst allowing them the lion’s share of possession.

    5

But this is usually lower league sides who face up to Chelsea like this, not a Mourinho-lead Tottenham.

Frank Lampard’s men had the run of Tottenham Hotspur stadium for the first 45 minutes but Spurs came out a different animal in the second half.
Chelsea largely dominated possession, with Timo Werner notching his first goal for the club with a 19th-minute opener.
Yet this is where Lampard failed.
Chelsea had enough chances to put the game to bed and should have whilst they smelt blood – but once again they didn’t take their opportunities.

Tottenham came out fighting in the second period, playing a much higher line, and it was their turn to dominate and threaten Chelsea’s goal.
Which would surely make Spurs fans wonder, why did they not set up like this from the off?
It was almost like Mourinho didn’t realise he cared about the game until half time.
Spurs got their deserved equaliser when Erik Lamela swept home on 83 minutes, taking the contest to penalties.

Chelsea had no idea how to deal with Spurs coming at them in the second half, having wasted chances to put the game to bed.

But Chelsea really shouldn’t have even let it get that far.
The Blues played with a real intensity to get the ball back when they didn’t have possession in the first half, but failed to show that same intensity when attacking with the ball.
Apart from Callum Hudson-Odoi, nobody was really trying to take the game to Tottenham when they were absolutely there for the taking in the first half.

Chelsea ended the game once again as their own worst enemies.
They had no idea how to deal with Spurs coming at them in the second half, having wasted their chances to put the game to bed before that.
And it was Tottenham who sneaked through, winning the shootout 5-4 as Blues’ England midfielder Mason Mount missed the TENTH kick.

Tottenham 1 Chelsea 1 (5-4 pens): Spurs win dramatic Carabao Cup clash after Mason Mount penalty miss

HE was serious, all right, Old Sulky Chops in the Tottenham dugout.
Jose Mourinho might have claimed he was going to jock off the Carabao Cup due to Tottenham’s acute fixture congestion.

But he sent out an experienced Tottenham team, who produced an outstanding second-half performance, equalised late and won a tense, silent penalty shoot-out when Mason Mount missed the decisive spot-kick for Chelsea.
Spurs had been offered the shortest ever route to a major Wembley final – just three wins required after Leyton Orient’s sicknote earned them a bye in the third round.
And if you believed Mourinho they weren’t even going to have a serious go at defeating Chelsea.
But don’t you ever believe the Portuguese rascal. This was vintage Mourinho – rope-a-dope defending followed by a strong finish.

It was a bitter blow for Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, whose side lost the FA Cup Final to Arsenal last month and have blown another trophy shot already.
With Maccabi Haifa coming up in the Europa League on Thursday, Mourinho has been having a public tizzy about fixture chaos and an apparent lack of resources, which continued in his pre-match TV interview.
“Who is going to play up front? Nobody. We don’t have anybody,” he scowled.
Although Harry Kane was on the bench, along with Lucas Moura, who scored a Champions League semi-final hat-trick last year – and both were sent on in the final stages to score shootout penalties.

Even with nine changes this was always a line-up capable of getting a result – Mourinho’s squad is not as shallow as he sometimes makes out.
Sergio Reguilon, the less-heralded of Tottenham’s two recent acquisitions from Real Madrid, had an eventful full debut at left-back – at fault for Timo Werner’s first Chelsea’s goal but creating Erik Lamela’s equaliser.
Chelsea boss Lampard knows Mourinho’s mind games better than most and insisted he was not fooled by them.
Lampard had won all three of his previous meetings with his one-time mentor – a league double over Spurs last season and a victory with Derby against Mourinho’s Manchester United in this competition.
The Chelsea boss gave a debut to keeper Edouard Mendy and a first start to Ben Chilwell.
And after 18 minutes of Chelsea passing the ball to and fro, into midfield and backwards again, with more than 80 per cent possession, the visitors scored.

It was the German’s first competitive goal since his summer move from RB LeipzigCredit: Reuters
It was a disaster for Reguilon who lost the ball to Azpilicueta in midfield and when the Chelsea skipper received it back from Callum Hudson-Odoi, the Spurs debutant was sent to the nachos stand by Azpilicueta doing little more than standing still.
Azpilicueta had the time to square to Werner, who rammed past Hugo Lloris.
Spurs then seemed to decide that having the football might help and soon almost equalised.
With Chelsea’s defence having one of their customary Nanna naps, Gedson Fernandes snuck in behind Kurt Zouma, who produced an excellent recovery tackle in the last ditch.
Then, a wonderful little touchline spat between the two managers – a stoppage in play annoyed Mourinho, who started at fourth official Andre Marriner.
When Lampard became involved, Mourinho gave him ‘the lobster’ – the two yapping hands signal.

The Argentine impressed as a false nine for the hostsCredit: Reuters
He then suggested that when Chelsea were 3-0 down at West Brom on Saturday, the Blues boss had been conspicuously absent from his technical area.
Whatever happened to the old bromance? That famous shower scene, when Jose told a naked Frank he was the dog’s conkers.
In truth, there has been little love between them since Lampard left Mourinho’s Chelsea, apparently for Major League Soccer, only to turn up at Manchester City.
Spurs were discovering impetus and Erik Lamela, one of Mourinho’s two ‘false nines’, performed a neat swivel and a shot which Mendy saved with his legs.
Spurs started the second half like a train and Reguilon came close to making amends when Aurier picked him out in space, yet Mendy pushed the Spaniard’s drive over the bar.
The Senegalese certainly looks an upgrade on Kepa Arrizabalaga – though perhaps not as good as the last keeper Chelsea signed from Rennes, Petr Cech.

With Spurs swarming, Steven Bergwijn – Mourinho’s second ‘falsie’ – went close and then had a decent penalty shout against Ben Chilwell turned down by Lee Mason.
Without VAR, they all just got on with playing football – and where’s the fun in that?
With 20 minutes remaining, Mourinho sent on Kane and switched to a flat back four, in the closest he ever gets to tossing caution to the breeze.
But it was Chelsea sub N’Golo Kane who made an instant impact winning the tackle of the night high up the pitch, allowing Werner to test Lloris with a stinging shot.
With Spurs having used al three subs, Eric Dier suddenly dashed down the tunnel – presumably for a loo break – with Mourinho in hot pursuit and Lloris yelling ‘what the **** is going on?’
But with Dier restored, Spurs continued to press and they grabbed a deserved equaliser on 84 minutes, Reguilon teasing his way down the left and centring for Lamela to prod home with Kurt Zouma and Emerson seemingly switched off.
Then the penalties – nine perfect efforts, followed by Mount hitting the outside of the post, with Mourinho cavorting straight down the tunnel in euphoria.
