Watch Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz score straight from a corner for the second time this season in Carabao vs Bolton

DOUGLAS LUIZ scored straight from a corner as Aston Villa took on Bolton in the League Cup.Steven Gerrard’s side found themselves 1-0 down at the League One outfit when the Brazilian stepped up to take a 36th minute set p[ece.

Luiz, 24, lofted it towards the back post… and goalkeeper Joel Dixon won’t want to see it again.
The Bolton stopper completely lost the flight of the ball, allowing it to drop over his head and into the top corner.
Amazingly, this is the second time this term that Luiz has caught a goalkeeper out with an in-swinger.
During a pre-season clash with Walsall he put his side 4-0 up directly from a corner.

Luiz’s moment of inspiration came at an opportune moment for his boss Gerrard.
The Liverpool legend has been criticised of late, with Villa having followed last season’s poor ending with an indifferent start to this campaign.
Villa did manage to edge out Everton 2-1, but this result has been sandwiched by defeats at Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.
So when Darius Charles gave Bolton the lead on 24 minutes, Gerrard may have had reason to worry.

Gerrard selected an extremely strong starting XI for the trip to Bolton.
Goalkeeper Emi Martinez was not rotated for the clash, and played behind an experienced back four comprising of Ashley Young, Calum Chambers, Tyrone Mings and Lucas Digne.
Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn, Luiz and Philippe Coutinho formed a diamond in midfield – with Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings up front.
Ings had a superb chance to give his side the lead early in the second 45 – only for his left-footed effort to strike the post.
The 30-year-old was then brought down by Dixon in the box – dusting himself down to score the resulting spot kick.
Goals from Digne and Leon Bailey rounded off a 4-1 win and ensured a place in the third round. More

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp calls for Community Shield teams to get BYE in FA Cup or Carabao Cup to ease fixture pile-up

JURGEN KLOPP has called for the teams involved in the Community Shield to be given a BYE into the next round of one England’s cup competitions. The Liverpool manager, whose team will play against Manchester City in this Saturday’s curtain raiser, called for an easing of the fixture pile-up for the two clubs.

In his pre-match press conference, he said: “I like the competition but again I think it would be possible to find another date for it.
“We had a longer season than other teams (last season) and now we have a shorter pre-season than other teams so it doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
Last season Liverpool went all the way in all three cup competitions to take their total fixtures played last season to a staggering 63 matches.
And ahead of an even more tightly packed fixture list ahead of the Qatar World Cup in November, Klopp wants the burden eased on his team.

Today’s Carabao Cup draw was split into North and South sections, but Peterborough will be cursing their rotten luck.
They face a ten-hour round trip to Plymouth for their round one clash.
And what’s more… they’ll have to make the same journey for a League One fixture the following weekend too.
This leaves them facing the prospect of having to make two ten-hour round trips in just four days.
They’ll have bitter memories too, having lost 4-0 to the Pilgrims at home in last year’s first round.
    More from Daws

That means the Carabao Cup will get underway just days after the return of domestic football in England.
All of the country’s top four leagues begin the weekend before – with the first Premier League match on August 5 between Crystal Palace and Arsenal.
However, top flight teams will not enter the Carabao Cup until the second round.
Then clubs who have qualified for the Champions League or Europa League will enter the draw in the third round.
