Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hints Virgil van Dijk will miss Man City clash after World Cup exploits

LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Virgil van Dijk may not play against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup. Last season’s top two meet on December 22 for both teams’ first competitive match back after the World Cup break.

But Klopp has revealed that he could be without a number of key players for the last-16 clash.
The German suggested Van Dijk, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold may not feature due to their exploits in Qatar.
On the trio playing in the game, Klopp said: “Yeah, there’s a chance, of course – they’ve trained already.
“Hendo [Henderson] is already training here. Virg [Van Dijk] is training here, but I don’t think we will try that.
“Hendo, we will see, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] we will see.
“But this group [has] worked now together for nearly two weeks and we made a real step and that’s cool. I don’t know at this moment.
“I hope we all get through it and we all know in England, and in Europe in general, there’s kind of a virus going around, so we hope we can stay out of that.
“Then we will make the decision obviously on Wednesday who can play on Thursday. It will be a very interesting game after that period [World Cup] but I’m looking forward to it.”

They could be needed again as Ibrahima Konate is potentially starting in the World Cup final for France just days before the match versus City. More

Liverpool 4 AC Milan 1: Reds gear up for Man City Carabao Cup showdown with demolition of Italians

LIVERPOOL got an early Christmas gift as they got back to winning ways against AC Milan. Mohamed Salah and Co fired the Reds to a 4-1 win over the Serie A champions to give them a nice jolt before domestic football returns with a Carabao Cup tie against Manchester City on Thursday.

They were in action in their second mid-season friendly, though their last showing in the Dubai Super Cup was less than stellar as they lost 3-1 to Ligue 1 side Lyon.
However, this time around Jurgen Klopp’s side followed Arsenal’s example and beat Milan.
Klopp managed to field a strong team against the Italians, with a number of his squad available again after returning from international duty.
But the scoring was opened by a player not even at the World Cup.

Salah found the net with a composed finish inside five minutes after an incisive move from Liverpool involving Roberto Firmino and a surging run from Joel Matip.
Milan didn’t take it laying down, however, and were level again once Alexis Saelemaekers equalised just before the half-hour mark.
Spaniard Thiago ensured Liverpool went into the interval in the lead with a brilliantly struck effort into the bottom corner after the ball fell to him just outside of the area.
Stefano Pioli’s side pushed for another equaliser after the break, with Liverpool surviving a goalmouth scramble before Youns El-Halali struck the woodwork.

However, they were left frustrated and were put to the sword by super-sub Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan endured a difficult World Cup as his nation were eliminated in the group stage, but put it behind him to score twice for Liverpool off the bench.
Youngster Bobby Clark, 17, set Nunez free with a brilliant pass, as the striker slotted into the bottom corner.
His second goal saw him put away a far more conventional tap in following a cross from the right flank to make it 4-1.
The customary penalty shootout followed, but Liverpool appeared to have initially left their penalty-taking boots at Anfield, as Kostas Tsimikas and Naby Keita missed the opening spot-kicks.
Ismael Bennacer and Chelsea flop Tiemoue Bakayoko scored theirs to put Milan 2-0 up before Fabio Carvalho finally got the Reds on the scoreboard.
Adrian then gave Liverpool hope of a comeback after palming away Yacine Adli’s effort.
Clark then made it 2-2 to top off an exciting cameo, before El Hilali returned Milan’s advantage to 3-2.
Nunez stepped up to convert his kick, though it will not be one to watch back with both a shocking take and even more shocking goalkeeping.

The tie ended as Pierre Kalalu won the shootout to spare Milan’s blushes and pick up a point from the tournament.
Regardless of the result, Liverpool know they must be in top shape to face Man City in the Carabao Cup and then a re-energised Aston Villa on Boxing Day for the Premier League’s return. More

Man Utd forced to slash capacity for Carabao Cup clash against Burnley by 12,000 due to ambulance strikes

MANCHESTER UNITED have been forced to scrap thousands of tickets for their Carabao Cup tie with Burnley later this month. The Red Devils’ first game after the World Cup break comes on December 21 when they welcome the Championship leaders to Old Trafford.

But they will only be able to welcome a maximum capacity of 62,000 for the match due to a lack of ambulance service availability following strike announcements.
Three unions, representing around 25,000 ambulance workers, will walk out in a coordinated strike on the day of the game.
The Theatre of Dreams ordinarily holds more than 74,000 people.
A club statement released on Thursday read: “Due to the unavailability of ambulance service personnel as a result of a day of industrial action affecting North West Ambulance Service taking place on Wednesday 21 December, the club has been advised by safety authorities to reduce the capacity of our Carabao Cup fixture against Burnley.

“The club has worked hard to develop a medical plan which will enable us to allow approximately 62,000 fans to be in attendance, but with West Stand tier 2 and North Stand tier 3 required to be closed.
“These areas were the only possible options for achieving the required reduction whilst meeting the robust medical plan requested by the authorities.
“It was not possible to move the match to another date due to the unavailability of other key public services and matchday staff over the Christmas period, the conclusion of stadium works during the World Cup break, as well as the existing fixture schedule of both teams.
“Everyone at Manchester United shares the inevitable disappointment caused by this news, particularly to those ticket holders who will be impacted. However, the safety of our fans is always our priority.

“As the match is currently sold out, we have written to fans tonight in the affected areas offering the option of a full refund.
“No action is required from fans with tickets in other areas of the ground at this time. We will provide a further update tomorrow detailing next steps.
“We will do our utmost to relocate anyone who is impacted and has not chosen to accept a refund, prioritising Full and Cup Season Ticket holders.”
Meanwhile, Man Utd prepared for their return to domestic action with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Everton at Carrington on Wednesday.
And it ended with Erik ten Hag’s side playing out a 1-1 draw with Frank Lampard’s men.
It was a small improvement for United after they suffered defeats to Cadiz CF and Real Betis while on a training camp in Spain last week. More

Guardiola jokes he and Klopp will have to play themselves in Carabao Cup with fixture just days after World Cup final

PEP GUARDIOLA joked he and old rival Jurgen Klopp might have to play themselves in next month’s Carabao Cup clash. The old foes have been drawn together in the fourth round – with the fixture set to take place only three or four days after the World Cup final.
Man City will face Liverpool in the cup just three or four days after the World Cup finalCredit: Reuters
Guardiola admits he has no idea what his team will look like as most of his squad are heading for Qatar this weekend.
He explained that those who go out early will be back in contention but others whose nations go deep in the tournament will need a break.
So his squad could be so threadbare that the 51-year-old might have to pull on his boots himself.
He said: “Yes I am going to play holding midfield and Jurgen is going to play left back – this is the strategy.”

Guardiola will have just a handful of players staying behind and a training camp in Abu Dhabi has been pencilled in for early December.
He added: “I don’t know how many we will have. Riyad doesn’t go to the World Cup, Erling Haaland, Sergio Gomez, Rico Lewis too but the rest are going.
“If they go through the group stage to the last 16 then they need to have some days off.
“If players don’t get through the group stage they will be able to play against Liverpool. If not, we will see.

“After the World Cup we are here to train, see how many we have for Liverpool.
“When we take breakfast we will see who we have. Players will come back day by day and I don’t know in what condition.”
Even so, Pep says he feels sorry for the players who are not involved – particularly Haaland and Mahrez.
He added: “I’d love for them all to be going.
“I would prefer Erling to go with Norway, that they’d qualified. I think he will be in Marbella and Norway and then come back to training.” More

Man Utd 4 Aston Villa 2: Hosts twice fight from goal down in frantic second half to keep Carabao Cup hopes alive

MARCUS RASHFORD celebrated his World Cup call up by leading Manchester United’s stirring fight-back.Gareth Southgate’s number two Steve Holland was in the stands at Old Trafford just hours after the Three Lions party for Qatar had been confirmed.

The Red Devils forward is part of it for the first time since his Euro 2020 heartache – in recognition of his recent return to form.
And he vindicated Southgate’s decision by pulling his team level with a well taken goal – before goals from Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay completed the turnaround late on.
It capped a breath-taking second half which was in stark contrast to a desperately poor opening 45 minutes.
And United claimed their revenge over Villa just four days after Unai Emery’s men had beaten them at Villa Park in the Prem.

Both managers made seven changes from that game and among those dropping out was Cristiano Ronaldo – who was not in the United squad due to illness.
Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who arrived at Old Trafford from Newcastle in August – was handed his Red Devils debut.
Meanwhile England’s Harry Maguire was handed only his second start since early September – and was desperately in need of minutes.
Maybe the teams knew each other too well after meeting only four days earlier because there was little of note in the opening exchanges.

Tyrell Malacia scooped a cross over which Diogo Dalot met with a header on the bounce but it was deflected narrowly over the bar.
There was no great urgency from either side to win this tie in the opening half hour.
A trademark Douglas Luiz corner needed a clearance off the line by Scott McTominay – although Dubravka will feel he had it covered anyway.
Minutes later, another one was only half cleared and former United man Ashley Young whistled a volley over the bar.
Yet after a thoroughly forgettable first half, the game sprang into life after the break.
Jacob Ramsey found space in the middle and played a perfect pass in to Ollie Watkins who had drifted off the shoulder of Maguire.
He showed the class which once put him in the England frame to race clear and lift the ball brilliantly over Dubravka.
Yet the home side were furious claiming there had been a handball by Boubacar Kamara in the build up.

With no VAR in operation, the goal stood and United showed their frustration by hitting back within a minute.
The smoke from the flares set off in the away end had still not cleared when Dalot played a lovely pass to find Fernandes who had drifted into space.
He rolled the ball across the box for Anthony Martial to slot home a simple equaliser.
The French ace was left out of his nation’s World Cup squad this week – maybe this will have put a smile back on his face.
After such a dismal first half – suddenly the game was alive and the visitors were back in front just after the hour.
Leon Bailey had only just replaced Ramsey when he was picked out at the back post by Young’s cross.
His header back across goal was not going in before Dalot stuck out a leg and diverted it into his own net.
That was three goals in 17 minutes – and there was almost another one soon afterwards.
Scott McTominay got in on the scoring act right at the end of this ding-dong encounterCredit: AP
Malacia picked out Rashford with a long ball and he took it past Tyrone Mings before blasting his effort just wide.
The England hopeful was not to be denied though – as he flicked on another pass from the full-back into the path of sub Christian Eriksen.
When Villa failed to clear he pounced on the loose ball and took advantage of a slip by Mings before stabbing a shot low into the corner.
Fernandes forced a low save from Robin Olsen as United chased a winner while the Swedish keeper also kept out Maguire’s thumping header.
But when Olsen fluffed his clearance sub Alejandro Garnacho pounced and played it into Fernandes.
The Portuguese shot was on target but a deflection off the hapless Mings sent it flying into the corner.
McTominay rattled a shot against the bar but wrapped up the scoring late on when he touched home Garnacho’s cross. More
