Argentina World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister’s Brighton team-mates KO’d by Charlton in Carabao Cup penalty shootout

AS Alexis Mac Allister continued to party with the World Cup winner’s medal back in Argentina, his Brighton teammates were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by League One Charlton.Ashley Maynard-Brewer was the hero for the Addicks, saving from Moises Caicedo after the Seagulls had missed three of their own spot kicks following a goalless 90 minutes.

While Brighton’s other World Cup representatives were brought crashing back to earth at the Valley, Mac Allister was posting snaps of himself hugging Lionel Messi and showing his medal to family and friends back home.
Brighton’s exit will have hardly ruined his week but it will feel like a missed opportunity for the Seagulls, who wasted a bucket load of chances before losing out from the spot.
Solly March missed a sitter in normal time before blasting what would have been the winning penalty over the bar.
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi said: “We made a lot of mistakes in the last few metres.

“We had match point with March but we made another mistake.
“When you make mistakes like this you have to lose the game.”
It was all smiles for Charlton, who are 18th in the third tier, as new manager Dean Holden watched on from the stands.
There may be fresh chaos off the pitch here, with supporters declaring they have no confidence in Danish owner Thomas Sandgaard, but there were raucous celebrations nonetheless as they reached the last eight of this tournament for the first time since 2007.

Australian Maynard-Brewer said: “When full time went and it went to penalties I was quite relieved.
“It shows what this club is capable of, one of the big dogs in the next round would be unreal.”
Charlton sat deep early on but the only first-half chance from Brighton saw Adam Lallana send an effort onto the crossbar.
The hosts came out of their shell as Jack Payne drove forward and cut inside from the left before firing a low shot into the arms of Jason Steele.
Steele then had to put his body on the line after Levi Colwill and then Lewis Dunk both duffed passes back to their keeper, who had to rush out and was clattered by Charlton’s Miles Leaburn.
Dunk then had to scramble to make a last-ditch block from Steven Sessegnon.
The Seagulls gave Maynard-Brewer more to think about after the break, with Deniz Undav and Billy Gilmour both drawing saves.
Colwill then went close from Pascal Gross’ free-kick, his header just tipped over the bar.
March delivered the worst miss of the night, weaving through a sea of red shirts to give himself a one-on-one from six yards only to roll his effort wide.
Charlton continued to hang on, with Maynard-Brewer on hand again to tip substitute Leandro Trossard’s effort behind for a corner.
Crosses from both Pervis Estupinan and Tariq Lamptey both rolled across the six-yard box just needing a blue shirt to tap them in, but none came.
Brighton were just as wasteful from the spot. Gross and Trossard hit the bar and post either side of Charlton’s Jayden Stockley also hitting the woodwork.

Jake Forster-Caskey and Evan Ferguson both converted before Steele saved from George Dobson and Rak-Sakyi, but March continued the comedy of errors, allowing Charlton back in.
Lamptey blasted his home as we entered sudden death but Maynard-Brewer denied Caicedo before Sam Lavelle fired home the winning spot kick for the Addicks. More

    Full-time stats
These are the stats for tonight’s featured game…
Burnley certainly gave a good account of themselves, as the stats show, but it was ultimately a lack of quality in the final third that let them down tonight, with Ashley Barnes missing the target on a number of occasions.
That said, we still thoroughly expect to see them back in the top-flight next season, as they showed that under Vincent Kompany they will be a tough team to play for any opposition.
The full-time stats of Manchester United vs Burnley
    Around the grounds
Manchester United and Burnley were not the only teams playing in the Carabao Cup round of 16 tonight, as Brighton crashed out against lower league opposition.
It is Charlton who took the Seagulls all the way, as a 0-0 draw forced the game to a penalty shootout, which Charlton won after SEVEN penalties were missed…
This is how the Carabao Cup RO16 results have gone so far…

    Wolves 2-0 Gillingham
    MK Dons 0-3 Leicester
    Newcastle United 1-0 Bournemouth

The last game to be played is a huge one, as Manchester City take on Liverpool tomorrow at 8pm, which you can catch coverage of here on SunSport.
    Magnificent Marcus the difference
The SunSport man of the match tonight has to go to Marcus Rashford.
Coming off the back of a personally brilliant World Cup campaign, many viewers are keen to see if Rashy can keep up his brilliant performances in a Manchester United shirt.
And if tonight is anything to go by, he definitely can.
His goal was simply sublime, as he channeled his inner Leo Messi and drove with the ball from his own half before smashing a low shot into the bottom left corner.
    FT. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
The referee calls the game to a close, and it is Manchester United who move onto the Quarter-Finals of the Carabao Cup.
Commiserations to Burnley, who gave a good account of themselves, we may just see this fixture more than once next season if they keep this up.
    90+2. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
“Is there a fire drill?” Rings out from the Burnley fans at Old Trafford.
Their support has been brilliant and it is easy to see why they are at the top of the Championship.
    90. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
There will be four minutes of added time at the end of the second half.
Bruno Fernandes picks up a yellow card for leaving one on Connor Roberts, he now misses the Quarter-Final. Silly.
    88. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
    Double change for United.
Fred and Brandon Williams are replacing Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia.
    86. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Antony takes a really good touch to get away from the Burnley left back.
His shot is low and saved by Peacock-Farrell before Rashford is flagged for offside.
    84. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Burnley should at least have one goal tonight.
Barnes misses a huge chance after a casual misplaced pass from Casemiro, and then is immediately substituted for Scott Twine.
    82. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Maatsen is hacked down by Antony, who throws his toys out the pram even against Championship opposition.
He gets a yellow card for his efforts.
    80. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
It looks like this is going to be Manchester United’s night, as they are firmly in control of this one now.
Full credit to the travelling fans however, they have been noisy and brilliant all night long.
They are currently singing some rendition of The Twelve Days Of Christmas…
    78. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Poor decision making from Antony, who just holds onto the ball for too long after Bruno makes a lung-busting run from box-to-box.
He just needs to get his head up there and play the ball earlier, the Brazilian.
    76. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
United get a free-kick within shooting distance, with Eriksen, Bruno and Rashford all lining up over it.
Bruno Fernandes pulls rank over the other contenders, but proceeds to smash it over the bar.
    74. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Luke Shaw is on for United, another one of England’s World Cup players, he replaces Aaron Wan Bissaka.
Anthony Elanga is on too in replacement of Anthony Martial.
    72. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Jay Rodriguez is warming up for Burnley.
Time to remind you that he has four Old Trafford goals in his career…
    70. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
It seems Rashford isn’t the only one who has been watching Messi, as Gudmundsson plays an inch perfect ball into Churlinov who really should get a goal back for Burnley.
His shot however is wide of the post, and a goal still eludes the visitors.
    66. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Marcus Rashford looks full of confidence at Old Trafford.
He is pulling out all the stops now, with a cheeky nutmeg on Cullen before driving at the Burnley goal and eventually getting tackled.
In his Lionel Messi bag it seems…
    64. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
A potential problem for Burnley here, as star man Manuel Benson goes down and looks to be in some pain.
    He is replaced by Churlinov.
    62. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Antony is on in replacement of Alejandro Garnacho.
The Brazilian has moved over to the right hand side, with Rashford now going to the left wing.
    60. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
    That is simply sensational…
Marcus Rashford picks the ball up in his own half, and charges down the right hand side, beating three Burnley defenders before smashing a low shot into the bottom left corner.
He is a man in form, but that is one for the highlight reel.
Marcus Rashford scored a beautiful solo goal to double United’s lead.Credit: Getty
    58. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
    Wow. Wow. Wow.
Marcus Rashford doubles the lead with an incredible solo goal.
    56. Manchester United 1-0 Burnley
Harwood-Bellis puts in a big tackle on Martial which leaves the Frenchman on the floor, a sight all too familiar for Manchester United fans…
Antony immediately gets his jacket off, and that might just be the end of Martial’s night, despite being back on his feet.
    54. Manchester United 1-0 Burnley
It feels like the next goal could decide this game.
If Burnley get it, you’d back them to capitalise and get another, whereas if it goes United’s way the game could be dead and buried.
    52. Manchester United 1-0 Burnley
The Burnley wingers are very high and wide as the Burnley side looks somewhat reminiscent of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
I wonder how many people would have believed that comparison three years ago…

Man Utd 2 Burnley 0: Rashford seals Carabao Cup win with incredible solo goal as he takes World Cup form home with him

MAYBE that need to fill Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring boots isn’t quite as desperate as they all thought. And maybe if Gareth Southgate had given him more than five minutes against France, England’s World Cup would have been oh-so-different.

Marcus Rashford scored an incredible solo goalCredit: Reuters
Anyone who witnessed Marcus Rashford’s magical performance certainly wouldn’t have been in a rush to disagree with either sentiment.
Yes, fair enough, they will point out it was “only” Burnley, how one swallow doesn’t make a summer – or winter – and all that.
But equally relevant is the old you can only beat what’s in front of you line. And Rashford didn’t just beat the Clarets, he thrashed them within an inch of their lives.
Tireless, terrific and a non-stop bundle of energy. So much for the suggestion those returning from Qatar duty would need a few weeks to get back up to speed.

Rashford hit the ground running, picked up pace as the evening went on and capped his wonderful display with arguably the finest goal of his life.
Never mind that it was against a Championship side, albeit one which is threatening to run away with that league.
It was a truly special, unforgettable moment of skill from a young man who has been transformed since Erik ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford. And then some.
United were already a goal to the good, yet in anything but the comfort zone when the ball fell to Rashford midway inside his own half 12 minutes after the break.

There was really nothing on, no danger whatsoever. Probably more to United than Burnley, if he lost the ball in home territory.
So he set off. And on he went. And on, and on and on. Jinking and weaving, the ball never more than a few inches from his foot.
Burnley backed off, rocked on their heels, with the backtracking Jordan Beyer not knowing whether to stick or twist.
In the end he did neither as Rashford’s stepover left him looking as groggy as a drunk at chucking out time, before the forward fired coolly, clinically and classically into the bottom corner.
For a split second it seemed Old Trafford was struck by silence. It was such a wondrous piece of skill it certainly should have been.
Then the whole ground rose as one – Heavens, there were even a few grudging Burnley claps in there – to salute a goal as fine as this stadium has seen in years.
The ninth of an increasingly impressive season for the England forward, and far, far away the best of the lot.
Three Lions boss Southgate must have had some damned fine strikers on his hands if he could leave him on the bench for all but the final, frantic few minutes of that quarter-final against France.
Or maybe he’s just a nice-guy kind of manager who’s never made a game-changing decision as national boss and only kept the job because there are no suitable alternatives. Hmmmm?
You can be pretty certain that even Southgate will find it hard not to make Rashford the first name on his next England teamsheet if he carries on in this vein.
The first game PC – Post Cristiano – and the only time Ronaldo’s name got a mention was the fact Rashford scored a goal even the magnificently six-packed one would have been proud of.
It was a goal fitting of winning a Champions League, never mind killing off a Championship side.
Although for United fans, the fact it is a side managed by Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany did make it that little bit extra special.
There is every chance they would have booked a place in the last eight even without Rashford’s sensational 70-yard solo, as well, because they were already a goal to the good.
That came courtesy of Christian Eriksen’s second strike for the club, with an opener that had something of the Christmas miracle ring to it as well.
The miracle in question being that the creator was Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who came up with one of the first decent crosses in his four seasons at Old Trafford.
Quite whether it has much impact on saving his United career is both highly debatable and doubtful, given this was only the full-back’s second appearance of the campaign.
It was only the seventh time Wan-Bissaka has even made the United squad. At least he could celebrate with an assist for the opener.
What an assist it was, as well, with a stretched volley to turn Bruno Fernandes’ admittedly over-hit pass into the box, where Eriksen smashed into the roof of the net.
We even had a couple of corny Christmas jokes thrown in, too, in the form of stand-in stopper Martin Dubravka’s comedy goalkeeping.
First he nearly punched the ball into his own net – after totally missing Manuel Benson’s cross – and needed Casemiro’s acrobatic heroics to hook it to safety.
    Read More on The Sun
And then he let a simple backpass from the Brazilian slip under his foot and had to dash back to hack it to safety.
It was just about the only thing that came close to wiping a smile off United faces all night. More

Fuming Man Utd fans all say the same thing about Dubravka after moments of madness in Burnley clash

Erik ten Hag handed starting opportunities to several fringe players, with Dubravka taking David De Gea’s place between the sticks.
And Dubravka had a nightmare first half as he twice produced mistakes that nearly ended in a goal.
First he failed in his attempt to punch a cross clear, and seconds later instead palmed the ball backwards to his own goal.
And if it was not for Casemiro’s last-ditch intervention clearing the ball off the line, it would have gone in.

Moments later Casemiro passed the ball back to Dubravka, who let the ball run under his foot as he tried to control it.
The ball trickled towards the goalline but the Slovenian was able to reach the ball and find a team-mate.
Fans were shocked by Dubravka’s errors and some claimed he is an inside agent.
One supporter wrote: “This Dubravka guy is an inside agent, why is he here what was that.”

Another added: “Dubravka is playing against us😂.”
And a third said: “This Dubravka brudda is an agent. Why the hell is he so bad what the hell?”
United led 1-0 at the time of the two incidents thanks to Christian Eriksen’s close-range goal.
Marcus Rashford then doubled the lead after half-time with a superb solo goal.
Dubravka also had a much more comfortable second half and was able to keep his second clean sheet in as many games for United as Ten Hag’s side won 2-0. More

And the Dutch boss looks on course to hand spots in the starting XI to both Martin Dubravka and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Goalkeeper Dubravka joined United on loan in the summer but made his only appearance in the round-three win over Aston Villa with David De Gea playing the rest of the 20 games.
Dubravka has been on the bench a further nine times while ex-Burnley stopper Tom Heaton has made 16 matchday squads in 2022-23 – but is yet to feature.
At right-back, Wan-Bissaka will make just his second appearance of the season when the Clarets make the short trip to Manchester for the 8pm kick-off.
