THE CARABAO CUP TRIUMPH was supposed to be a springboard to greater things for Manchester United.Unfortunately, it has proved quite the opposite.

From a win ratio for manager Erik ten Hag of 69 per cent when they beat Newcastle United at Wembley last February, they have dropped off to 50 per cent with 16 wins from 32.
So did some believe the job had been done with that first trophy in six years?
Ten Hag said: “It’s a fact. We have dropped levels and we need to fight against that.
“We have to get back to those levels and there are reasons for it but still it’s not acceptable and we have to fight against it.”

United face Brentford at Old Trafford on the back of five defeats in seven games in all competitions.
Were they to be stung by the Bees and lose again it would be the first time they have lost three league games in a row since 1979.
So what do they have to do to get out of this slump that has left them tenth in the league and in danger of dropping out the Champions League at the group stage?
Ten Hag said: “Every team we put out has to be on one page.

“They have a good foundation in the way they play, keep the foundation, support each other and we will do better.
“Consistency, that is the problem we are struggling with.
“In big parts of the game, we do a lot of things right but then there are moments where we are struggling and in such moments we can’t survive.
“In this moment, you have to do the right things, so be consistent and do the job, be consistent in the communication and when you do that you keep the right organisation and do it like before.”
Ten Hag has seen his side switch off too many times after scoring while heads can go down after they have conceded.
He said: “Definitely, you can mark such a moment as when we score a goal or concede a goal and when decisive moments go against us, we lose a bit as a team.
“Over big parts in 95 per cent of the game, we are a team, so we have to keep going all the way through and we have to step up.”

And the London derby between West Ham and Arsenal is also on Sky on the same night, starting 45 minutes earlier at 7.30pm.
Incredibly, it means that the two selections will overlap – so fans will be forced to choose between them.
And there will not be a live match on TV on Tuesday October 31.
The EFL confirmed the reason for both the United and Arsenal matches being on the Wednesday due to European .

A statement said: “As a result of both Manchester United and West Ham United being scheduled for Premier League action on Sunday 29 October and Saturday 4 November, their respective Carabao Cup Round Four will both take place on Wednesday 1 November to allow for the appropriate recovery and preparation time for the fixture.
“Due to a number of Premier League games taking place on Sunday 29 October, options for live selections on Tuesday 31 October were impacted, meaning both fixtures will be broadcast on the Wednesday, in staggered kick-offs.”
Strangely, Chelsea are also in action on the Wednesday when they host Blackburn.
That is despite the Blues not being in European action and therefore not playing on the Sunday before.

In fact, Mauricio Pochettino’s side take on Brentford in the lunchtime game on Saturday September 28 while Rovers host Swansea at 3pm.
Liverpool’s Carabao Cup trip to Bournemouth is also on November 1.
Ipswich vs Fulham takes place that night, too.
That leaves Everton vs Burnley and Exeter’s home tie with Middlesbrough on the Tuesday night.
Mansfield and Port Vale are yet to confirm their fixture date but it is expected to be October 31 as well.
Manchester United beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley in February to end their six-year trophy drought, thanks to goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.
Casemiro was on target again on Tuesday as the Red Devils saw off Crystal Palace 3-0 in round three – with Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial finding the net.
Newcastle, meanwhile, dumped out Manchester City thanks to a solo strike from Alexander Isak.

United will face the Magpies at Old Trafford – who they beat in the Carabao Cup final last term.
Despite Eddie Howe’s side’s 1-0 victory against eight-time EFL Cup winners Manchester City at St James’ Park Newcastle fans were ragging.
They were fuming with their fourth-round fixture and a slight change in the draw could be the reason for it.
The draw was conducted by SkySports presenter Emma Saunders, Celtic legend Neil Lennon and former Sunderland man Don Goodman.

In the second and third-round draws the person on the left drew the home teams and the right did the away teams.
But last night it was ex-Bhoys star Lennon who standing on the right drew the home sides as he pulled out Man Utd No4 to hand them another home game.
The tie meant United set a new record for drawing the most home ties.
The odds of the record happening, drawing 12 home ties in a row is 4,096/1 – and left many wondering if the small tweak to the draw could explain why Man Utd will host once again.
