Carabao Cup set for huge rule change next season as fans ask ‘how would that even work?’

THE Carabao Cup is set for a huge rule change from next season. But baffled fans have been left scratching their heads, with many asking: “How would that even work?”

The Carabao Cup, currently held by Manchester United, is seen by many clubs as an opportunity to rotate sides and give lesser squad players a run-out.
As the competition heats up, managers become enamoured by the idea of landing a trophy midway through the season.
And as the final rounds emerge, all the big stars are out on display.
However, there will be one less opportunity for top players to strut their stuff.

That’s because the Carabao Cup is set to scrap two-legged semi-finals from next season.
The Mail claims the EFL is finally ready to agree to the move in order to secure a £900million funding package from the Premier League.
Top-flight chiefs had long been eager to make the semi-finals just one leg to ease congestion.
But EFL counterparts wanted to keep the home and away ties due to finances, with the Carabao Cup making up a third of their domestic TV deal with Sky Sports.

However, the broadcaster has now agreed a £935m deal with a clause preventing the EFL from being penalised financially for scrapping the two legs.
This money, plus the funding from the Premier League, has now pushed EFL chiefs to move to a single semi-final tie.
But the details are still to be ironed out, with the one-legged affair possibly taking place at a neutral stadium.
It’s reckoned Premier League clubs would also be more inclined to field strong XIs from the early stages of the Cup.
And it’s all part of English football’s plan to ease pressure on players, having already axed replays in the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup.
Fans reacted to the news, with some left confused by the plan.
One said: “How would that even work?”
Another declared: “Anything to help the bigger clubs as always.”

Others thought it was a good idea, with one saying: “About time.”
    Another added: “Good riddance.” More

It would be their 11th consecutive home draw in domestic competitions if you were to exclude their double-legged Carabao Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest in January.
The Red Devils will be looking to bounce back from their crushing 3-0 loss to Manchester City in a repeat of last year’s Carabao Cup final against The Magpies.
Elsewhere in the fifth round draw is a potentially tasty fixture between Arsenal or West Ham vs Bournemouth or Liverpool.
Despite their impressive trophy haul throughout their history, Arsenal have only won the league cup twice – with their most recent success coming in 1987.

West Ham meanwhile will be hoping to add another trophy to the cabinet having tasted glory with their Europa Conference League win in the summer.
Prospective opponents Liverpool last won the League Cup in 2022, when they completed a domestic cup double.
Liverpool narrowly missed out on the quadruple that year, finishing behind City on the final day of the Premier League and losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid.
Elsewhere, Premier League strugglers Everton and Burnley meet on Wednesday as Toffees boss Sean Dyche welcomes his old club to Goodison Park.

Rice and the rest of the Arsenal team will be in a bouyant mood for the fourth-round cup fixture.
The Gunners are coming off the back of the 5-0 mauling of Sheffield United on the weekend.
Eddie Nketiah starred in the fixture as he smashed home the first Premier League hat-trick of his career.
The result helped the North London side back to winning ways after their draw against Chelsea.

The Gunners managed to come back from two goals to earn a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Rice himself will be keen to continue his own fine form, having picked up an assist and a goal in his last two games.
He will likely get a mixed reception from the West Ham faithful at the London Stadium.
It is thought that many will applaud the former captain, who helped the club win its first trophy in 43 years.

However, there are some sections of the home support that were unhappy to see him join a London rival in the summer.
The West Ham fans could be in a less welcoming mood when Rice does appear after a frustrating week.
The Hammers have lost three on the bounce in all competitions, with the most recent defeat coming to Everton on Sunday.
The result against the Toffees came after the first European defeat in 17 matches at the hands of Olympiacos, which followed the 4-1 loss to Aston Villa.
Manager David Moyes will be keen for a big win to lift the mood at the club before serious questions over him start to be asked.
    What is their form like?
Arsenal come into the game having only lost one game in their last five outings.
The defeat came in the Champions League to Ligue 1 side Lens in France.
Since the loss, the Gunners have gone unbeaten and picked up impressive wins over Sevilla, the Blades and Manchester City.
West Ham, however, have not won in four games, having only escaped defeat with a draw to Newcastle.
The last time the Hammers finished a game ahead was in their 2-1 win over Freiburg in the Europa League.
    What is the team news?

Mikel Arteta may rotate his teamCredit: Getty
David Moyes will have a full-strength side ahead of the huge Carabao Cup clash as Emerson can return to the fold after his one-match suspension.
But the Hammers manager is likely to rotate after witnessing his side lose to Everton at home.
Moyes will have Lucas Paqueta and Edson Alvarez available as they are suspended from the next Premier League fixture after collecting their fifth yellow cards against Everton.
Elsewhere, Mikel Arteta will continue without Gabriel Jesus (hamstring), Thomas Partey (muscle) and Jurrien Timber (knee).
Who will be the star men?
Declan Rice will have something to prove against West Ham
Kudus will want to improve on his recent performance against Everton
Arsenal’s star man and player to watch will undoubtedly be Declan Rice.
It will be interesting to see how he reacts to playing against the club that helped forge him into the player he is today.
Rice has shone so far this season, scoring two goals and picking up one assist.
The midfielder has also helped improve the Gunners’ midfield with his driving dynamic runs.
For West Ham, Moyes could use the cup game as another chance to hand Mohamed Kudus some minutes.
The Ghanian made his first Premier League start against Everton, but failed to impact the game.
The attacker has looked good for the most part since joining the Hammers, but a top outing against Arsenal could take him to a new level.
    What’s been said?
West Ham star Aaron Cresswell is hopeful that a win against Arsenal can turn the club’s form around.
He said: “We’ve been in spells like this in many seasons and we’ve just got to stick together and get through it.
“One win changes everything again and we’ve got to stay positive, get back to the training ground, do what we do there and focus on the next game now.
“We’ve had some tough games, Aston Villa away, Olympiacos away, they’re not easy games, and yes, we could have been better today.
“We lacked that cutting edge in the final third, the goal we conceded was sloppy and like I said, we’ve got to get back to the training ground and put it right.”
Bukayo Saka however is hoping the win over Sheffield United will give Arsenal something to build on.
    He said: “It’s looking good.
“We need to continue to build on this.
“Next week is going to be even harder, with two tough away games, but we’ll be ready and hopefully we can have a week like we just did.”
    Score prediction
    Arsenal win 3-1.

Ten Hag admits ‘there are reasons’ for Man Utd’s slump as flops risk setting unwanted record with Brentford defeat

From a win ratio for manager Erik ten Hag of 69 per cent when they beat Newcastle United at Wembley last February, they have dropped off to 50 per cent with 16 wins from 32.
So did some believe the job had been done with that first trophy in six years?
Ten Hag said: “It’s a fact. We have dropped levels and we need to fight against that.
“We have to get back to those levels and there are reasons for it but still it’s not acceptable and we have to fight against it.”

United face Brentford at Old Trafford on the back of five defeats in seven games in all competitions.
Were they to be stung by the Bees and lose again it would be the first time they have lost three league games in a row since 1979.
So what do they have to do to get out of this slump that has left them tenth in the league and in danger of dropping out the Champions League at the group stage?
Ten Hag said: “Every team we put out has to be on one page.

“They have a good foundation in the way they play, keep the foundation, support each other and we will do better.
“Consistency, that is the problem we are struggling with.
“In big parts of the game, we do a lot of things right but then there are moments where we are struggling and in such moments we can’t survive.
“In this moment, you have to do the right things, so be consistent and do the job, be consistent in the communication and when you do that you keep the right organisation and do it like before.”
Ten Hag has seen his side switch off too many times after scoring while heads can go down after they have conceded.
He said: “Definitely, you can mark such a moment as when we score a goal or concede a goal and when decisive moments go against us, we lose a bit as a team.
“Over big parts in 95 per cent of the game, we are a team, so we have to keep going all the way through and we have to step up.”

United will face the Magpies at Old Trafford – who they beat in the Carabao Cup final last term.
Despite Eddie Howe’s side’s 1-0 victory against eight-time EFL Cup winners Manchester City at St James’ Park Newcastle fans were ragging.
They were fuming with their fourth-round fixture and a slight change in the draw could be the reason for it.
The draw was conducted by SkySports presenter Emma Saunders, Celtic legend Neil Lennon and former Sunderland man Don Goodman.

In the second and third-round draws the person on the left drew the home teams and the right did the away teams.
But last night it was ex-Bhoys star Lennon who standing on the right drew the home sides as he pulled out Man Utd No4 to hand them another home game.
The tie meant United set a new record for drawing the most home ties.
The odds of the record happening, drawing 12 home ties in a row is 4,096/1 – and left many wondering if the small tweak to the draw could explain why Man Utd will host once again.
