Baffled fans ask ‘what is he doing’ after spotting ‘overhyped’ Caicedo’s actions in build-up to Middlesbrough goal

FOOTIE fans were left baffled by Moises Caicedo’s actions in the build-up to Middlesbrough’s winner against Chelsea. The Premier League big boys suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Championship Boro in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

Caicedo just let his man get away

A second-half strike from Hayden Hackney sent the Riverside into a state of pandemonium and saw Michael Carrick’s troops put one foot in next month’s Wembley final.
Hackney strolled into the box unchallenged and cooly slotted the ball past Djordje Petrovic.
And replays showed that Caicedo was to blame for the midfielder’s free run at goal.
The Blues’ club-record signing failed to bust a gut as Boro broke away and made little effort to close the distance between himself and Hackney.

And to make matters worse, he stopped shortly after getting into the box and put his hands behind his back before Hackney fired home.
Blues fans couldn’t believe their eyes after seeing the Ecuador international’s lack of effort, with one saying: “What is Caicedo doing?
“Just stops following his runner and puts his hands behind his back.”
Another said: “Bruh gave up real quick.”

And another said: “Nahhhh WTF is this about.”
One remarked: “Caicedo is generally way overhyped.
“He always takes long breaks in each game walking around and not positioning himself to receive passes.
“Second time in three games he cost a goal as well because he doesn’t track back.”
One furious member of the Stamford Bridge faithful said: “How does this player cost that amount of money?
“He runs around like he’s got cement blocks in his shoes, heavy legs. Overrated player.”
Chelsea will bid to exact revenge on Boro and reach the first major final of the season in the return leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday week.

But, thankfully for Chelsea, it’s not the end of the tie.
The Blues will have to be much better in the second leg at Stamford Bridge in two weeks if they are to overturn this one-goal deficit – and they will need to learn how to put the ball in the back of the net.
Depleted Middlesbrough were excellent throughout, soaking up large spells of pressure and then punishing their Premier League visitors on the counter.
Michael Carrick’s men are more than in this semi-final at the halfway stage, and can head into the return fixture full of belief with Wembley just 90 minutes away.
Thanks for joining us, and goodnight.

    Poch: We made mistakes
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino insisted his side’s approach was the right one tonight, but they were simply punished by some mistakes at either end of the pitch.
The Argentine remains confident that his team will turn around the deficit during the second leg on home soil.
The approach was good. I think we made some mistakes. I think we gave them chances to score, and then they were really tough. They played in transition with a low block. Still, we had many chances to score but we didn’t. We have another 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge and we need to be positive.Mauricio PochettinoSky Sports

    Sterling struggles with another semi
Some of the fiercest Chelsea criticism this evening is being directed at Raheem Sterling, who struggled to make an impact against Championship opposition.
By failing to find the net, it means that the forward’s run without scoring in a semi-final extends to 21 such matches.

    Harsh throwback for upset Blues
It’s been a quarter of a century since Chelsea last lost a League Cup game inside 90 minutes to a lower division side.

    Match stats from the Riverside
Defeat for Chelsea who had 18 shots, 72% possession and what felt like 250 crosses that went straight out of play.

Full time – Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    Advantage Middlesbrough!
Hayden Hackney’s first half goal means that the Championship club will take a 1-0 lead to London for the second leg in a fortnight.
Chelsea huffed, Chelsea puffed, but did so little that their lower-level hosts were comfortable.
It’s a point not lost on the travelling fans either. As the home fans celebrate, the visiting section are letting their players know exactly what they think.
Thiago Silva heads over in an attempt to appease the booing Blues, but something seems seriously amiss with the Stamford Bridge club.

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
90+4. A final chance of the evening is headed into the side netting by substitute Alfie Gilchrist.
It took a nick so leads to a corner, but Fry, Clark and Engel are up to the task, just as they have been all evening.
Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea – Jones yellow card
90+2. Middlesbrough’s Isiah Jones is cautioned for time wasting over a throw-in on the near side.
If we’re truly talking time wasting, then the whole Chelsea squad should go into the book.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    90. There’s a few seconds respite for Middlesbrough as Matt Crooks receives treatment after rolling his ankle.
It’s the cue for the fourth official to hold up the board that shows there will be four minutes of additional time.
The Riverside Stadium is as loud as it’s been tonight.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    88. The Middlesbrough defence are standing tall to everything that’s been thrown at them.
A Clark header out. A Fry volley clear. Clark again when Chelsea return with another centre.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    86. We have a late new entry for worst cross of the evening, and it’s straight in at number one.
    Stand up, Conor Gallagher.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    85. Five minutes remain on the night, 95 to go in the tie.
Middlesbrough lead by a single goal, and it’s all getting a little frantic as they try to protect it.
It’s a sea of red bodies as Gallagher lines up an effort, one that is bravely blocked at close quarters.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    83. A Chelsea corner leads to some pinball inside the Middlesbrough six-yard box but before anyone in blue can pounce, Jonny Howson emerges to thump to safety.
    A captain’s contribution.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    81. And it almost does!
Broja comes left to finally involve himself, and then offers a directness that has been lacking from Chelsea tonight.
The Albanian cuts back inside and then out again before sending a cross-shot towards the far post.
It evades the outstretched arm of Glover – but also the outstretched leg of Sterling.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    79. Armando Broja has only touched the ball five times since coming on – and still looks a bigger threat than Mudryk.
If only Chelsea could get the ball to him, then something may happen.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    77. The home fans raise the noise levels for one last push.
The Middlesbrough supporters have put in as big a shift as their players tonight.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    75. Chelsea have had 75% of possession in the second half, but only recorded five attempts at goal.
Thanks heavens the transfer window is open, and Todd Boehly can put all this right…
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    73. Since he came on 13 minutes ago, Mudryk has specialised in dribbling the ball straight into opponents.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    71. You know things are bad when even Thiago Silva is making mistakes.
The Brazilian legend slips over on the wet surface as Boro launch their latest counter, and it momentarily lets Coburn through on goal.
The youngster doesn’t have the pace to outstrip the 39-year-old, however, and Silva soon gets back to push him off the ball.
There was the option for Coburn to slip in Crooks, but opted against it thinking his teammate was offside.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    70. Bizarrely, that double Chelsea change seems to have spurred a new lease of life into Middlesbrough.
The Blues look even more toothless than they did before.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    68. For a side that has spent so much of the second half defending, Middlesbrough love to get numbers forward when the opportunity presents itself.
A corner follows that last counter, and shortly afterwards Barlaser takes aim with a rising blaster from 25 yards out. Over.

    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea

    66. No, Boro still have the will and ability to attack!
Coburn does very well to hold up play, and then brings in Crooks, who releases Jones.
The winger drives into the penalty area and goes searching for former Rangers man Crooks at the far post.
However, this time Jones gets his delivery wrong, sending the low centre behind his teammate.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    65. Middlesbrough have dropped very, very deep.
As Chelsea probe forward again, the hosts have nine players back inside their own penalty area.
Are they happy to protect their one-goal lead?
Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea – Chelsea double substitution
    63. Here we go!
The electronic board goes up and it’s the end of the night for Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke.
Mauricio Pochettino has sent for Mykhailo Mudryk and Armando Broja.
“What a waste of money!” rings around the Riverside Stadium. Take your pick at who that’s aimed at.
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Chelsea
    61. Gallagher works a half-chance for himself, controlling a cross from right and acrobatically spinning in one movement while falling backwards.
Mid-breakdance, the Chelsea captain gets a shot away that veers wide of the far post. More

Middlesbrough 1 Chelsea 0: Wasteful Blues leave shooting boots at home as Hackney is toast of Teesside

IT WAS a night when Chelsea’s billionaire boys club were guilty of playing some Hackney Marshes football. And a night when a local lad called Hackney had Middlesbrough dreaming of Wembley.

Cole Palmer will know he should have scoredCredit: Reuters

Mauricio Pochettino’s arm-and-a-leg side might still make it to the Carabao Cup final – unfortunately for Boro they are not going to scrap two-legged semi-finals in this competition until next season.
But while Chelsea dominated possession and showed flashes of expensive quality, they were wasteful in front of goal and worryingly fragile in defence.
Michael Carrick’s Championship side were worthy of their first-leg victory, courtesy of Hayden Hackney, their England Under-21 midfielder from nearby Redcar.
And Chelsea have some serious work to do in the return leg at Stamford Bridge in a fortnight if they are to overhaul Boro and reach their first final of the post-Abramovich era.
This is a competition which used to be considered small fry for Chelsea but for Pochettino, as well as for Todd Boehly and his chaotic Clearlake ownership crew, it would mean the world.
This is a talented but naive side, marooned in mid-table in the Premier League, which could well need a domestic cup to qualify for Europe next season.
There were simply too many players in Blues shirts who were off it against a Boro side who defended with stoicism and showed glimpses of genuine class – as their chairman Steve Gibson celebrated his 66th birthday in some style.
Hackney, who played wide-left here and has the hunched gate of Chris Waddle, is one to watch.

Isaiah Jones was too speedy for Levi Colwill, who had a shocking first half.
But Cole Palmer, starting as Chelsea’s makeshift centre-forward, was guilty of two glaring first-half misses as Pochettino’s men were left frustrated.
The Blues haven’t won a trophy since the 2021 Club World Cup – the sort of gap which was virtually unthinkable during the Abramovich years.
For Boro, it was a first major semi-final since the 2006 UEFA Cup, and a chance to relive the marquee nights that used to be regular here a generation ago.
Within the first minute, Colwill’s dodgy back-header let in Emmanuel Latte Lath but the Ivorian injured himself as he scuffed his shot at Djordje Petrovic and Axel Disasi slid in.
Both Latte Lath and Alex Bangura were forced off through injury in the opening 20 minutes but Carrick’s boys were holding their own.

Chelsea’s fans, recalling the 1997 FA Cup final between these two clubs, were singing for Roberto Di Matteo.
Who says they ‘ain’t got no history’? It’s the present that’s bothering them.
Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, the most expensive midfield duo in the history of mankind, were hardly pulling up any trees against Championship opposition.
Noni Madueke forced a corner with a darting run and a saucy outside-of-the-boot centre was headed narrowly over by Colwill.
But Chelsea’s first clear sight of goal came from a dozy Boro error as skipper Jonny Howson’s pass fell straight to Palmer, who almost had too much time and space before he shot wide.
Boro seized on this let-off and twice within the next few minutes, Chelsea were caught pants-down.
First Matt Crooks fed Hackney, who dragged his shot wide.

But having had his sighter, the gifted local lad would not be found wanting twice.
This time Jones latched on to a long ball down the right, he out-paced and out-skilled Colwill – who had only just been booked for cynically fouling him.
When Jones centred low, Hackney evaded the attentions of Caicedo and slotted home from close range.
The Riverside went ballistic and Hackney, one of their own, roared into the throng.
Chelsea were looking meek and fragile every time Boro went forward.
Yet they still held an attacking threat, and Caicedo drilled a long-ranger just wide in first-half injury-time.
Then came another extraordinary miss from Palmer as Fernandez curled a shot which keeper Tom Glover should have saved comfortably but somehow spilled, only for Chelsea’s ‘false nine’ to shovel over from close range.

His first effort was dragged wide despite having lots of time to pick his spotCredit: Getty
Palmer then cut inside and forced a decent save from Glover before the half-time whistle.
The pattern continued early in the second half – Chelsea creating and missing chances, yet looking vulnerable at the back.
Captain Conor Gallagher – three words which say much about Chelsea’s lack of experience – turned his man but shot wide from six yards.
Pochettino hauled off Fernandez and Madueke, sending on Armando Broja as an authentic centre-forward and his lightning winger Mykhailo Mudryk, aka Ukraine Bolt.
The Blues were bossing possession but a slip from Thiago Silva almost let in butcher’s son Josh Coburn.

Sterling shot wide across, then Broja did the same and the worse Chelsea’s finishing got, the more Boro believed.
They held firm, their supporters roaring them on with a fervour that reminded you of Gibson’s glory years.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer with ‘miss of the season’ against Middlesbrough as fans joke striker ‘can’t finish his dinner’

COLE PALMER produced a miss of the season contender in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Middlesbrough. The youngster has been in red-hot form for the Blues this season but his shooting boots deserted him at the Riverside.

Cole Palmer missed from five yards out against Middlesbrough
Fans slammed the forward for his wayward finishingCredit: Reuters
He missed several first-half chances with the commentary team on Sky Sports declaring “he should have had a hat-trick” at half-time.
Palmer’s worst miss came from just five yards out as Enzo Fernandez’s strike was spilt by goalkeeper Tom Glover – the England star followed up but blazed his first-time volley over the bar.
Chelsea trailed 1-0 at the time thanks to Hayden Hackney’s 37th-minute opener, but they had 11 shots in the first half.
Palmer, 21, also came close to scoring when he cut inside before unleashing a powerful low shot that was well saved by Glover.

‘Thank God there was no VAR’ – Chelsea escape penalty after ‘reckless’ Disasi forces Boro star off in FIRST MINUTE

CHELSEA fans rejoiced there was no VAR as they escaped an early penalty scare at Middlesbrough. There was less than a minute on the clock in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg when the Blues were almost made to pay for Levi Colwill’s error.

Replays showed the impact of the tackle on Latte LathCredit: Sky Sports
His loose touch enabled Emmanuel Latte Lath to race into the box with the ball.
And as he got his tame shot away, Axel Disasi came flying across with a reckless sliding tackle – just hours after Mauricio Pochettino told his players to be more aggressive.
Disasi got none of the ball and clattered into the Boro striker, who needed treatment and limped off a few minutes later, replaced by butcher’s son Josh Coburn.
But Chelsea supporters watching the clash at the Riverside on TV were relieved to see the referee not give the spot kick.

And due to their opponents being in the Championship, there is no VAR for the Carabao Cup semis to “maintain fairness”.
Therefore, there was no one at Stockley Park to tell the official to watch a replay on a pitchside monitor and overturn his decision.
One fan said: “Thank God there was no VAR.”
    Another wrote: “Reckless challenge tbh.”

A third added: “Second replay showed that Disasi did not get the ball, but actually tackled Latte Lath.”
A fourth joked: “Referees forgetting to blow their whistle because they are too used to VAR doing their jobs now.”
And a final user quipped: “Fair play to Chelsea, they know the referees are useless enough on their own so as soon as there’s no VAR they’re fouling everyone.”
However, not everyone was in agreement that the last-ditch tackle by Disasi was a foul.
One replied: “It was never a pen.”
And another agreed: “Fans crying for a penalty – it was never a penalty and VAR wouldn’t have helped overturn that decision.”
Middlesbrough gaffer Michael Carrick – who was already without 12 players through injury before kick-off – could not believe his luck when Alex Bangura also had to be substituted inside 20 minutes, taking the tally to 14 crocked men.
Cole Palmer missed a gilt-edged chance to fire Chelsea in front but grabbed his low shot wide.
And Boro fans forgot about their penalty appeals ten minutes before the break when Hayden Hackney tucked in the opener, sparking bedlam at the Riverside.
Palmer put another simple effort over and saw a third well saved by Tom Glover.

Mauricio Pochettino tells Chelsea to be more aggressive ahead of Carabao Cup semi-final but stats tell different story

Blues visit Middlesbrough tonight for the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg, three days after Poch rapped them for being too soft in the FA Cup against Championship Preston.
He said: “The most important thing is to not only say or think we are going to win it but to show it through actions and performance.
“It is important to be aggressive when we can be aggressive.
“When you have a young team in your hands, sometimes a first half like Preston is to be used and to realise that it is about keeping  possession and being aggressive with it when you arrive in the box.

“But sometimes we are confused and we were talking  about what we need to improve on if we want to be a more consistent team this season.”
Pochettino is 180 minutes from reaching a Wembley final in his first season as Chelsea head coach – but it took his £1billion squad almost an hour to break down  Preston on Saturday.
The Blues eventually swept aside North End with four goals in 27 minutes.
But they face a tougher fight this evening with no VAR to scrutinise decisions.

A meeting was called before training yesterday in which Pochettino ironed out his demands.
He said: “I told the players if you think we are going to win then in the first few minutes you need to show it and we didn’t show.
“We weren’t aggressive enough, then we lost the ball in one action and conceded a chance.
“We need to match their desire and energy. It is going to be tough.
“Watching the game against Aston Villa, Middlesbrough lost but could have won the game. It’s a good team with good ideas.”
Chelsea have certainly shown some aggression in the Premier League, as they are top for most cards shown this season.

After the Reds beat Arsenal 2-0 in the FA Cup and secured their place in the fourth round, their attention has now turned to the Carabao Cup.
Liverpool and Fulham will play in a mandatory two-legged tie in order to decide who will play in the final at Wembley.
The winner will go on to face either Middlesbrough or Chelsea on Sunday, February 25th 2024.
The Reds are hoping to extend their record amount of EFL Cups as they seek a record-breaking tenth title.
    READ MORE IN LIVERPOOL
    What is their form like?
Top of the table Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions, while Fulham have won their last two matches, which includes their win against title-challengers Arsenal.
Fulham have the fifth leakiest defence in the Premier League, conceding 35 goals.
That will make good reading for Jurgen Klopp and his team, as the Reds are the third-highest goalscorers with 43 goals.
Liverpool have won 13 games in the top flight this campaign, which is the most wins by any side other, apart from Aston Villa.
    Most read in Football
    What is the team news?
The Reds will be without Andrew Robertson, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Dominik Szoboszlai, Kostas Tsimikas and Stefan Bajcetic as they have injuries.
Virgil van Dijk is expected to be back after missing the Arsenal game last time out due to illness.
Liverpool will be missing their top scorer Mohamed Salah and midfielder Wataru Endo for their upcoming semi-final due to the duo participating in Afcon and the AFC Asian Cup respectively.
The Cottagers will be without Adama Traore as he continues to recover from a thigh injury.
Tim Ream will also be unavailable for the trip to Anfield due to an ongoing calf problem.
Fulham will definitely be without Calvin Bassey, Fode Ballo-Toure and Alex Iwobi due to commitments to Afcon.
Who will be the star men?
Influential Mo Salah will be hugely missed by the Reds but a player that may step up to the plate is Darwin Nunez.
Darwin Nunez will be a player to look out for with the forward scoring five goals and assisting six times in the league so far this season.
The Uruguayan netted once in the Carabao Cup in Liverpool’s 1-2 win against Bournemouth in the round of 16.

Marco Silva striker concerns may have eased after the summer departure of Alexandra Mitrovic with Raul Jimenez returning to form.
The Mexican has scored four goals in Fulham’s last five matches but the forward is yet to find the net in the Carabao Cup.

    Liverpool vs Fulham preview
There should be a bit of confidence and belief in both sides heading into this first leg.
Liverpool continued their fine form which has saw them catapult to the top of the Premier League table, when beating Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday.
They probably rode their luck at times but Jurgen Klopp’s men winning 2-0 showed a different side to them, particular as they navigate without Mo Salah this month.
They’re clearly the strong favourites to win this tie and must surely be confident of winning the trophy itself.
Fulham came through in penalties against Everton in the previous round and have recorded back-to-back wins coming into this one.
The win over Arsenal was followed by a 1-0 victory over Championship side Rotherham in the FA Cup over the weekend.
The odds suggest they have their work cut out here though….

    Liverpool vs Fulham betting tips
Diogo Jota looks sure to be involved here and is a very generous price to make his mark.
Despite that generosity, we’ve still sought even more value and reckon he could get at least a double here.
He’s been unfortunate not to get more game time since his return from injury and can stake his claim to Klopp here.

Joao Palhinha is a popular name in these write-ups – especially against the big teams who’ll dominate possession.
The midfielder is being watched by some big clubs this month and is a huge player for the visitors here.
