      Bournemouth star David Brooks in line for Wales return after 536-day cancer lay-off, confirms boss Robert Page

      Then Brooks, 25, scored a hat-trick in a 45-minute outing for the Cherries’ development side as they beat Portsmouth 5-2 in the Hampshire Senior Cup on Tuesday.
      Wales boss Robert Page has hailed Brooks’ powers of recovery but left the 21-cap star out of his squad for this month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Croatia and Latvia because he felt it came too soon.
      But Page has given Brooks the realistic target of a summer comeback for the Dragons, with Group D clashes versus Armenia and Turkey.
      Page said: “We had a positive conversation. It’s a great achievement for him after what he has been through.

      “He has had his first involvement, and it’s all about his rehab now and getting match fitness.
      “It was unrealistic for him to come for these two games against  Croatia and Latvia. But I have told him about how important he is for me — and to the future of Welsh football.
      “There are camps in June, and he can’t wait to be a part of it again.
      “He is an incredible talent, so to have someone like him coming back into the fold is great for all of us and gives us all a lift.”

      Brooks’ treble versus Pompey did not go unnoticed by his Wales team-mates, who are preparing for their opening qualifier in  Split on Saturday.
      Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham, a close pal of Brooks for club and country, said: “I was buzzing.
      “I knew he had a game, and I was checking on my phone… one goal, David Brooks, two goals, three goals.
      “I was slightly disappointed when I saw the goals themselves. I wouldn’t say it’s the most exhilarating hat trick I’ve ever seen in my life!
      “But it was good to see, especially with what he’s gone through. And to have an amazing moment of coming on the other day for his first Premier League game back.” More

      Brooks netted his treble by bundling in the first from close range before a strike with both his left and right foot in front of the watching Cherries boss Gary O’Neil at the Vitality Stadium.
      Bournemouth’s official twitter account tweeted: “The perfect return for @DRBrooks15.
      “The winger netted a hat-trick for the development squad this evening.”
      It was the first time Brooks has scored since August 2021 when he found the back of the net against Nottingham Forest.

      The 25-year-old has battled back from his Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis in October 2021.
      But the Wales attacker revealed he was ‘cancer free’ last October.
      After 529 days, Brooks was in the Bournemouth matchday squad and an unused sub against Liverpool earlier this month.
      Then Brooks, who has 21 Welsh caps, came off for the final 11 minutes of the Cherries’ 3-0 Prem defeat at Villa Park on Saturday.

      PROSTATE CANCER UK advocate Chris Powell is the reason Southend United fan Keith Smith believes he is still alive.Back in 2018, the Shrimpers fan was diagnosed with prostate cancer by his GP.

      Lucky for Smith, it was caught early.
      The football supporter had heard Powell, who was manager of Southend at that point, champion the renowned charity.
      So, Smith took on the now Tottenham coach’s advice and went for a check up.
      Not only was prostate cancer detected, a small tumour on his kidney was also found.

      Emotionally connected to Powell, Keith has stayed in touch with the Charlton legend.
      The pair were recently reunited at an U21 fixture between Spurs and Brighton at Hotspur Way.
      Keith told Tottenham Hotspur’s website: “Since I was diagnosed with cancer back in 2018, I’ve felt this kindred spirit with Chris.”
      “I’ve got no doubt in my mind that if it wasn’t for Chris, I wouldn’t be standing here today, it’s a simple as that. I’ll be eternally grateful to him, he’s a top guy as everyone already knows and it’s just nice to catch up again.

      “I’ve followed his career, seen him on the England bench, here at Spurs as well, so to be here today with him at the Training Centre is a real honour. The facilities here are brilliant, absolutely unbelievable, out of this world.
      “I never realised, especially supporting a lower league team, how different it could be – everything is new, crisp, the people are so nice, the staff are so friendly… it’s absolutely fantastic and anyone who works for the club or plays for the club here is a very lucky person.
      “My message now is the same as the one Chris gave me – it’s very important that awareness of prostate cancer is raised among the general public and to encourage people to get checked.
      “My mantra has always been ‘a blood test won’t kill you, but prostate cancer can’ so everyone has that incentive to go. If you’ve previously had any cases of prostate cancer in your family, go and get yourself checked as well so that we can help to beat this disease.”
      Today, Keith is an ambassador for Prostate Cancer UK along with Powell.
      And they support the ‘Prostate FC’ initiative, which aims to raise awareness of the risk factors, fund research and save lives in every football club across the UK.
      Powell said: “It means so much to me that I’ve got to know someone who was suffering from prostate cancer, who heard my message and is a survivor. Sometimes I don’t realise how big that is, to have helped save someone.
      “If it wasn’t for my work and involvement with Prostate Cancer UK, we may have lost Keith but thankfully he’s still here to enjoy his life. It’s great that we’re still in touch – he loves football, he loves Southend, but I think I’ve got us another Spurs fan now!
      “He and his wife were my guests to watch an Under-21 game and I know they couldn’t believe what the club is like in terms of the Training Centre, how it works and how great everyone here is. I just wanted to spend some time with him, as we’re both big ambassadors for the cause now.
      “What I would say to any Spurs fan is to be aware of the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer, which include age, ethnicity and family risk.

      “Fans can go on the Prostate Cancer UK website where there is so much information, including a brilliant 30-second risk checker which may save your life.
      “More importantly tell your partner, your uncle, your brother and talk to your GP if you are worried. I get myself checked on my birthday every year – that’s my gift to myself – so that’s the way I remember.”

      Brooks was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2021 but revealed he was ‘cancer free’ last October.
      Brooks tweeted: “529 days I’ve had to wait for that feeling!
      “Been a long wait and a very difficult period for me and my family but to be able to step back on that football pitch and feel part of the team again was special!
      “Thanks to all the fans for the great reception.”

      Brooks’ return to Bournemouth first-team action saw him receive a warm welcome from team-mates and fans at the Vitality Stadium.
      And he could now be in contention to make a Wales comeback this week.
      Boss Robert Page names his squad for this month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Croatia and Latvia on Tuesday.
      Brooks, who has won 21 caps, last played for Wales against Denmark at the last-16 stage of Euro 2020.

      But the former Sheffield United winger linked up with Page’s squad at the World Cup in Qatar last November.
      Aaron Ramsey returned from a hamstring injury for Nice in a 2-2 draw at Nantes on Sunday but Page will be sweating over news on injuries to Wayne Hennessey and Brennan Johnson.
      Hennessey was named on the bench and pulled out of the warm up before Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 loss to Spurs while Johnson limped off in the second half.
      Forest boss Steve Cooper said: “Wayne felt his knee so was unable to go on the bench. Brennan went off with a groin strain, which we don’t know how bad it is. We’ll see over the next day or two.”
      Jonny Williams became the fourth player to retire from Wales since the World Cup, joining Gareth Bale, Joe Allen and Chris Gunter.
      The Swindon midfielder, 29, won 33 caps and said: “I have decided that the time is right for me to step back and retire from international football. From the age of 15, it has been an absolute honour and privilege to wear the red dragons on my shirt.
      “Going to two European championships and a World Cup was beyond my wildest dreams but it was all made possible together.” More

      John Motson dead: BBC commentator legend dies aged 77 as stars pay tribute to ‘voice of football’

      LEGENDARY football commentator John Motson has died aged 77 leaving the world of sport in mourning.The BBC pundit celebrated 50 years in the job in 2018 before hanging up his mic in May that year.

      The commentator was famed for his signature sheepskin coat as he became the voice of football for countless generations.
      During his career, he covered ten World Cups, ten European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals and more than 200 England games.
      A statement from his family said: “It is with great sadness we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today (Thursday).”

      Tributes have flooded in for the legend from the world of football.
      Gary Lineker wrote: “Deeply saddened to hear that John Motson has died.
      “A quite brilliant commentator and the voice of football in this country for generations. He’ll be very much missed. RIP Motty.”
      Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler said: “John was the standard-setter for us all.

      “We basically all looked up to him – his diligence, his dedication, his knowledge. He was a very serious broadcaster but he was a real fun guy to be around.”
      Fellow commentator Clive Tyldesley wrote on Twitter: “As a teenager I just wanted to be John Motson. Nobody else.”
      Jamie Carragher said: “RIP John Motson. An absolute Legend of the game. So many of us grew up listening to this man describe the action & goals on MOTD & cup finals. Sad loss.”
      While former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell wrote: “Rest in Peace John “Motty” Motson an absolute legend and gentleman.”
      In 2014, Motson was diagnosed with bowel cancer and forced to miss the World Cup in Brazil.
      Speaking at the time, he said: “I consider myself very lucky I was diagnosed so early that the cancer was dealt with and the positiveness came about because I wanted to get back into my normal life.
      “That drive and determination was probably the most positive thing I could’ve had.”
      Motson was born in Salford and began his journalistic career in Barnet – the team he supports on the Barnet Press.
      He worked as a reporter between 1963 and 1967 before being hired for BBC Radio 2.
      His first radio commentary was an Everton v Derby clash in December 1969.
      Three years later, Motson became a household name thanks to his work on Match of the Day.
      His breakthrough came during Hereford’s shock 2-1 win against Newcastle in the 1972 FA Cup replay.
      Motson was only meant to cover the match for a five-minute segment but Ronnie Radford’s famous 30-yard strike meant the clash was promoted to the main game.
      He famously remarked on the game: “Oh what a goal! Radford the scorer. Ronnie Radford! And the crowd are on the pitch. What a tremendous shot by Ronnie Radford.”
      It helped propel his career even further – with Motson going on to voice major FA Cup, European Championships and World Cup finals.
      He commentated on almost 2,500 televised games in total including a record-breaking sixth World Cup final in Berlin in 2006 and his 29th FA Cup final in 2008.
      Motson was famed for his often poetic commentary and encyclopaedic football knowledge during his illustrious career.
      His quip at Wimbledon scuppering Liverpool’s chances of the double in 1988 became notorious.
      The legend said: “The Crazy Gang have beaten the Culture Club.”
      Motson bowed out after 50 years on the final day of the 2017/18 season and was invited on to the pitch.
      Then-Crystal Palace manager Roy presented him with a framed copy of the programme from his first and last matches at Selhurst Park and a crystal microphone.
      He won a Bafta that year for his work and received an OBE in 2001 for services to sports broadcasting.
      Motson lived in Hertfordshire with his wife Anne, who he married in 1977.
      BBC director-general Tim Davie described Motson as “the voice of a footballing generation”, steering fans “through the twists and turns of FA Cup runs, the highs and lows of World Cups and, of course, Saturday nights on Match of the Day”.

      He added: “Like all the greats behind the mic, John had the right words, at the right time, for all the big moments.
      “He will rightly be remembered as a legendary figure in British sports broadcasting, respected by those in the game, loved by fans and an inspiration to those who followed him in the commentary box.”

      They were raising money for the club to provide free prostate cancer testing for Charlton and Fleetwood fans ahead of their league clash at The Valley on Saturday.
      It is done on behalf of the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal with close to 500 booked in for the hassle-free five-minute test.

      Dortmund said that before kick-off and during half-time a bulge would appear on the field to help raise awareness for the disease on World Cancer Day.
      The club tweeted: “It’s never too early to get a cancer screening and please do it regularly.”
      The German club have been directly impacted by testicular cancer, striker Sebastien Haller was diagnosed with the illness in the summer of 2022.
      He has undergone two surgeries and four cycles of chemotherapy to help his recovery.

      Haller is now back in first-team action for Dortmund and to top an incredible story, he scored in the win over Freiburg.
      He netted the third goal as his side won 5-1 with fans chanting his name and all of his team-mates celebrating jubilantly with him.
      It was only the former Ajax and West Ham man’s fourth appearance back from his lengthy spell on the sidelines.
      As Haller scored, Dortmund tweeted: “F*** cancer.”

      He now has the all clear, though, and is ready to make his long-awaited bow for his new club.
      And when he does take to the field, the 28-year-old will do so wearing his customised cleats with a very personal message.
      Haller and sponsors Puma shared an Instagram post of the forward at Signal Iduna Park and sliding his foot into his bright orange Ultra Ultimates.
      And on the side, the words “F*** CANCER” have been printed in silver, with the “u” replaced by a lightning bolt.

      Haller’s wife Priscilla commented in the replies with three fire emojis.
      The former West Ham was signed as Erling Haaland’s Dortmund replacement but the tragic news has ruled him out of action since his £28million arrival.
      Haller returned to Dortmund training at the beginning of January following four rounds of chemotherapy and two operations.
