With Gareth Bale struggling on his Tottenham return, which comebacks were a success and which were flops?

THEY say never go back… and that may be how Gareth Bale is feeling right now.
The Real Madrid star returned to Tottenham after seven years away at the beginning of the season in a loan deal, but has so far failed to impress boss Jose Mourinho.

The Special One even threatened to send the Welsh legend back to the Spanish giants, after a disappointing showing in training.
In his Spurs hey-day, Bale notched 56 goals and 58 assists in over 200 appearances before his £85million exit in 2013.
But, with a dodgy injury record and a poor relationship with Zinedine Zidane leading to plenty of time spent on the sidelines in Spain, there were already plenty of doubts when he returned.
Here, SunSport details four comeback kids Bale can look to for inspiration to turn things around – and three he dare not emulate.

    THIERRY HENRY

Thierry Henry proved his legendary status in North London with his cameo return – as if he needed toCredit: Getty – Contributor
Arguably no player has had as big an impact at one club during the Premier League era as Thierry Henry at Arsenal.
Few could blame the Frenchman for trying his luck with Barcelona after eight years in North London – especially as he went on to win the treble.
Eventually heading to North America, Henry found himself at a loose end in January 2012 and fancied a trip to see some old friends.
A two-month loan deal was sorted and he reminded Gooners why he was so adored with a winning goal on his debut, against Leeds in the FA Cup.

Henry played seven games during his second spell and left on a high, bagging a stoppage-time winner in his final appearance.
    MARIO GOTZE

Injuries and a mystery illness got in the way of Mario Gotze’s Borussia Dortmund comebackCredit: Getty – Contributor
Mario Gotze, like most top German players, signed for Bayern Munich while at the peak of his powers.
The manner of the 2013 switch irked Borussia Dortmund but the player, who was briefly Germany’s all-time record transfer, actually struggled in Bavaria.
Three years later, he returned and admitted: “I can look at [the move] now through different eyes. I can easily understand that many fans could not understand my decision. I would not make that decision now.”
Far from the fairytale return, Gotze managed just 16 games for Borussia the following season.
Things barely improved and the World Cup winner was released this summer.
    DIDIER DROGBA

Returning legends can make as big an impact off the pitch as on it, as Didier Drogba showed.
The Ivorian was far from his prime when pitching up at Chelsea for a second spell in 2014.
Time in China and Turkey had drained more than a yard of pace from the striker, aged 36 as he rejoined.
Yet he embodied the Blues’ return to normalcy, coinciding with Mourinho’s second term as manager to bag a Premier League title.
A talisman around the entirety of the club, Drogba even helped out with vital goals against Spurs, Manchester United and Leicester en route to his fourth league crown.
    KAKA

Brazilian playmaker Kaka’s decline was confirmed with a middling return to MilanCredit: AFP
If any player’s return was set up like Bale’s, it is the story of Kaka.
Departing AC Milan in 2009 as one of the world’s best players, the Brazilian became a classic Galactico signing for Real Madrid.
Like Bale, he had his moments in Spain but ultimately struggled to shake off injuries and titles were often evasive.
Upon departing Real, Kaka was compelled to relive his Milan glory days and signed a free transfer in 2013.
Tearing his hamstring in his first game, he bounced back to score a reasonable seven goals at the San Siro as the Rossoneri drifted to a disappointing eighth-placed finish.
    DIRK KUYT

Returning to your old team can often be a bit of an anticlimax… but not for Dirk Kuyt.
The underrated Dutchman headed back to Feyenoord in 2015 on the hunt for one last heroic moment to cap his career.
It finally arrived in his last game for the club, Kuyt bagging a final day hat-trick to seal Feyenoord’s first Eredivisie title in 18 years – which the captain lifted himself.
In fact, he isn’t the only Premier League favourite with a fantastic Feyenoord return under their belts.
Robin van Persie returned to Rotterdam for his final 18 months as a professional, scoring 25 times and lifting the KNVB Cup.
    JOE COLE

West Ham fans must be yearning for the sort of talents that used to pass through the club, before they were sold on.
Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole all left for success elsewhere – but one did come back.
A home league debut equaliser against QPR provided hope of things to come but Cole was not the midfield maestro who had terrified defences for Chelsea in years gone by.
In an 18-month stay at Upton Park, Cole failed to establish himself in the team.
The Hammers beat relegation in 2013/14 after a strong second half of the campaign, although the ex-England ace rarely featured when they won.
    MARK HUGHES

British players heading abroad tend to produce mixed results, as Mark Hughes can attest.
Sparky’s trip to Spain was far less fruitful than Bale’s would prove to be, spending just a season with Barcelona before being loaned to Bayern Munich.

New Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the striker back in England and handed over £1.8m to sign him, £200,000 less than Barcelona had paid the Red Devils two years previous.
Hughes quickly became a staple as Fergie began to build his first imperious side.
Two Premier League titles and two FA Cups were among his achievements in a seven-year second spell, as well as a pair of PFA Player of the Year gongs. More

NEYMAR scored a cheeky no-look penalty but Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at strugglers Lorient.
The Brazilian star scored twice but the French giants still slipped up as Mauricio Pochettino lost his first game in charge of the club.

Lorient took the lead but PSG levelled before the break through Neymar’s cheeky penalty.
Neymar did not look at the ball during his run-up and confidently netted.
The former Barcelona forward stuck his tongue out in celebration after his cocky finish.
And the PSG star fired them in front in the second half as he scored another penalty.

Pochettino’s side appeared to be heading for victory but were stunned by relegation-threatened Lorient.
The hosts equalised after 80 minutes through Yoane Wissa and Lorient mocked their opponents by replicating Erling Haaland’s goal celebration.

And Lorient shocked the visitors after snatching a 91st minute winner through Terem Moffi.
After beating the offside trap, 21-year-old Moffi raced from his own half and slotted home to stun PSG.
It was PSG’s fifth defeat of the campaign and leaves them in third place with their title defence on the line.

Demarai Gray completes £3m Bayer Leverkusen transfer as he joins on 18-month deal from Leicester

BAYER LEVERKUSEN have completed the signing of Demarai Gray from Leicester City for around £3m.
The England youth international had just six months remaining on his contract at King Power Stadium, having fallen out of favour with boss Brendan Rodgers.

Gray, 24, has signed an 18 month deal with the Bundesliga side, and could face his former club in the latter stages of the Europa League this season.
The winger joined the Foxes from Birmingham City in January 2016, subsequently playing a cameo role in their Premier League title win under Claudio Ranieri.
He went on to make 169 appearances in total for Leicester, although managed only two outings this season.
An 18 minute cameo against Crystal Palace last month proved to be the full extent of his Premier League campaign this time out, having also made a rare appearance in the 2-0 League Cup defeat to Arsenal.

Gray has found the majority of his football with Leicester’s Under-23s this season, although will now be thrust into a battle for top four in Germany.
Bayer Leverkusen are fourth in the Bundesliga after 19 games, ahead of Gray’s compatriots Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham’s Borussia Dortmund on goal difference.
Peter Bosz’s side lost an important top-four clash with RB Leipzig 1-0 yesterday.
Gray becomes the third British-based player to be recruited by the German side this month.

Bosz’s men signed Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Manchester United, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s seven-year spell at Old Trafford.
And they also recruited Celtic right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who Gray could potentially link up with down that flank.
Following Gray’s departure, only Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan, Jamie Vardy, Marc Albrighton, Daniel Amartey and Christian Fuchs remain from Leicester’s title-winning campaign.

Chelsea transfer target Erling Haaland misses penalty for first time in professional career in Dortmund game vs Augsburg

Chelsea are believed to be leading the chase for the 20-year-old hotshot after the arrival of ex-Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel.
Manchester United also long-term admirers of the forward along with Real Madrid.
However, despite many believing the son of ex-Nottingham Forest and Man City star Alf-Inge Haaland was simply unplayable, he proved today that he is human.
Dortmund were trailing at home to Augsburg this afternoon when they were awarded a chance to level from the spot.

And you would not have found many people backing against their 20-goal top scorer from adding another to his tally as he placed the ball down.
But amazingly the usually lethal frontman smashed his effort straight at the crossbar before it was cleared to safety – resulting in his first-ever penalty miss.
He had previously converted all eight spot-kicks throughout his senior career.
And his last even came earlier this season in Dortmund’s 3-0 Bundesliga win over Gladbach.

Fortunately for him his blushes were spared moments later.
Marco Reus made history as he set-up Thomas Delaney to level on 26 minutes.
That was the star’s 87th assist in Dortmund colours – the most by any man ever to wear the famous shirt – and ensured his team went in level at the break.

Man Utd transfer target Dayot Upamecano will be SOLD by RB Leipzig in summer as £38m release clause activates

MANCHESTER UNITED will compete with several rivals for Dayot Upamecano this summer, according to reports.
Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Liverpool have all been linked with the Frenchman following his rapid rise at RB Leipzig.

Upamecano was an integral part of the Bundesliga side’s run to last year’s Champions League semi-finals.
But it appears as though this season will be his last at Leipzig with a new contract agreed in 2020 containing a bargain release clause.
The centre-back will be available for £38million when the clause activates at the end of the campaign.
Therefore, clubs are expected to hold off on negotiating a deal until the summer.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, United are among the teams waiting for the right moment to pounce.
A new centre-back was thought to be high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s agenda last summer.

Competition for Upamecano will come from several quarters with Chelsea now thought to be keen.
New boss Thomas Tuchel reportedly wants the 22-year-old instead of predecessor Frank Lampard’s target, Declan Rice.

Liverpool are also said to be lurking with interest as they struggle to cope with a defensive injury crisis.
However, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are expected to return from long-term injuries before the start of next season.

Bundesliga giants Bayern may be in pole position for the transfer with Upamecano reportedly favouring a move to Bavaria.
According to German website Fussball Transfers, the defender has held numerous conversations with Munich bosses.
Yet Bayern may attempt to seal a deal for less than his £38m release clause, in the hope that Leipzig will accept a lower fee amid the coronavirus pandemic’s financial crash.

Man Utd drop out of Deloitte Money League top three for first time since 2013 as 10 richest clubs are revealed

EUROPE’S biggest clubs are facing a whopping £2BILLION price for the Covid-19 pandemic.
The analysis by football finance experts Deloitte lays bare the impact of the crisis on even the game’s elite giants.

And one significant victim was Manchester United, who dropped out of the top three of Deloitte’s ‘money league’ for the first time since 2013.
According to the Deloitte number crunchers, the immediate consequence of the virus outbreak was to knock £1.05bn off income for the leading 20 European clubs last year.
But Deloitte expects 2021 will see a similar impact on TV revenues and with crowds not expected back in grounds until next season at the earliest – and even then likely to be limited – anticipates the total cost will exceed £2bn.
Analyst Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: “There is no doubt that this is one of the most testing times the football industry has ever had to endure.

“While no football club has been immune to the challenges of Covid-19, and other clubs have suffered more in relative terms, those in the Money League have borne the greatest financial impact in absolute value terms.
“In this year’s edition, the top 20 clubs generated an average of £363m per club, a decline of £49m compared to 2018-19.”
Barcelona remain top of the money table despite income dropping £111.5m to £627.1m, less than £200,000 ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid.
But United’s £119.1m fall, to £509m – a consequence of missing out on the Champions League – saw them drop below Bayern Munich into fourth place, although the Old Trafford club were still English football’s highest earner.

Manchester clubs have the worst net spend in the past decade by some distance

Other Premier League sides in the top ten were Liverpool, whose £489.9m took them into the top five for the first time since 2001-02, with Manchester City sixth on £481.6m, Chelsea eighth on £411.9m and Spurs ninth with £390.9m.
Yet the figures are unlikely to recover over the next 12 months as Jones added: “The safe return of fans to stadia in significant numbers is one of the highest priorities across global football.
“Matchday operations are a cornerstone of a club’s business model and help drive other revenue-generating activity.
“The final size of the financial impact of the pandemic on football will depend, in no small part, on the timing and scale of fans’ return.”

Man Utd in Dayot Upamecano transfer blow as Chelsea and Bayern ‘make contact’ with RB Leipzig star

MANCHESTER UNITED have received a blow in their pursuit of RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano as Chelsea and Bayern Munich have reportedly contacted him about a transfer.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the centre-back for months but they now face stiff competition from their fellow European powerhouses.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich have made contact with RB Leipzig about Man Utd target Dayot Upamecano

United were said to be front-runners to land the 22-year-old for £55million this month.
Upamenco’s £38m release clause is only activated in the summer so United are reportedly willing to cough up the extra cash to land him during this transfer window.
The Red Devils have scouted the Frenchman for more than a year and were close to agreeing a deal last summer.
But they could now be pipped to the post, according to German outlet Kicker.

With Jerome Boateng’s contract up at the end of the season and David Alaba seemingly on his way to Real Madrid, Bayern are keen to add another defender to the ranks.
And coach Hansi Flick is said to have spoken to Upamecano already.
But the Bavarians are not the only ones interested with Chelsea having reportedly made contact too.
Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma are Frank Lampard’s No 1 centre-back pairing but backups Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are not fancied by the Blues boss.

    Upamecano’s contract expires in 2023.
Liverpool were also said to be interested but do not want to dip into the transfer market this month which could see them miss out.
SunSport revealed in October United initially tried to sign Upamecano as a 16-year-old, but missed out because they would not meet the £700,000 asking price by his then club Valenciennes.
He even travelled to Old Trafford with his parents but United chiefs wouldn’t go above £500k, despite him already earning rave reviews in France’s youth teams.
He subsequently joined Salzburg, and moved to Leipzig in 2017.
