Mesut Ozil reveals love of ‘Turkish Real Madrid’ Fenerbahce ahead of potential January transfer but rules out Schalke

MESUT OZIL admitted he loves Fenerbahce and compared them to Real Madrid ahead of a potential January switch to the Turkish side.
The Gunners outcast also ruled out a return to Schalke in a Twitter Q&A.

I grew up as a @Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany – every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany. And mine was Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country 🇹🇷 https://t.co/Y3hEba79IO

I definitely will. There are two countries I want to play football in before I retire: Turkey 🇹🇷 and USA 🇺🇸. If I went to Turkey, I could only go to Fenerbahce. https://t.co/TL68kUL62M
    — Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088) January 11, 2021

A deal to take Ozil to Fenerbahce is ‘closer than it has ever been before’, according to club president Ali Koc.
And Ozil fuelled the fire with a public display of affection on Twitter.
Berkay asked: “Why do you like Fenerbahçe since you were young Mesut and what is the main thing that makes you a Fenerbahce fan?”
The 32-year-old replied: “I grew up as a Fenerbahce fan as a kid in Germany – every German-Turkish person supports a Turkish team when they grow up in Germany.

“And mine was Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce is like Real Madrid in Spain. The biggest club in the country.”
Ozil has been tipped to join Fenerbahce, with his brother even posting a picture of their badge on his Instagram story along with a winking face emoji.
And the playmaker has also been linked with a return to Schalke – where he played between 2005-08.
His friend and former Gunners team-mate Sead Kolasinac is there on loan but Ozil poured cold water on the idea of going back to the struggling German side.

Robert Lewandowski reveals Jurgen Klopp became father figure for him after he tragically lost his own dad aged 16

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI has revealed how Jurgen Klopp became a ‘father figure’ after his dad passed away when he was a teenager.
The Bayern Munich goal machine was named the best player in the world in 2020 at last month’s FIFA awards to complete his rise to the very top of the game.

It capped a long journey that began as a child when his father would make four-hour trips to take the budding striker to training.
The Poland international told The Players Tribune: “If I didn’t have parents who were willing to drive me there, my football dream would have been over before it even began.
“They were both P.E. teachers, and my dad happened to be my P.E. teacher. So after school he would drive me to training, wait two hours for my session to finish and then drive me home.”
Lewandowski was just 16 when his father sadly passed away after a long illness.

He had spells playing for Delta Warsaw, Legia Warsaw II, Znicz Pruszkow and Lech Poznan before his big break with Borussia Dortmund in 2010.
Lewandowski gradually became one of the world’s most complete attackers under Klopp’s tutelage.

The 2020 Fifpro world XI includes four Liverpool stars, as well as Messi, Ronaldo and Lewandowski
And he acknowledges that his relationship with the German was key to his progression.
Lewandowski said: “I could talk to Jurgen about anything. I could trust him. He is a family man, and he has so much empathy for what goes on in your private life.”

The key? Well, Lewandowski believes it is because Klopp was a ‘strict’ teacher.
The 32-year-old added: “He was not content to let you be a B student, you know? Jurgen wanted A+ students. He didn’t want it for him. He wanted it for you.”

It’s fair to say that nothing got past Klopp and his man-management skills.
Lewandowski said: “I remember one time we were in the dressing room after having a weekend off. And, you know, the classic trick when a player has been out drinking is to eat a lot of garlic the morning after, so that your breath doesn’t stink of alcohol. So Jurgen came in before training and began sniffing around.
“He was like a hunting dog. Sniff, sniff. Sniff, sniff.

“Finally, he said, ‘I smell… something… is it garlic?’
“Of course he knew that it was. And we knew that he knew. But he just left the question hanging in the air and walked away without saying a word more.
“It was silent for a moment, and then we all looked at each other and started laughing.”

Man Utd defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah set for £1.5m Bayer Leverkusen transfer after rejecting new contract offer

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah is set to join Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, according to reports.
According to the Manchester Evening Standard, the 23-year-old is set to join Leverkusen for just £1.5million after rejecting United’s contract offer earlier this season.

Fosu-Mensah joined Manchester United back in 2014 and made his debut against Arsenal in 2016

Leverkusen currently sit third in the Bundesliga and a permanent move could be good for Fosu-Mensah, who has made just 30 appearances in six years.
The report also states that Fosu-Mensah was being tracked by former club Ajax and German side Hertha Berlin last season, but United triggered a one-year extension.
Fosu-Mensah’s preferred destination is believed to be Ajax but the move is unlikely to happen.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer acknowledged the possibility of Fosu-Mensah leaving in January or for free in the summer.

Solskjaer told reporters: “I’m not sure if Timo is going to stay or [if] he’s going to take an option now.
“He’s not played enough, so of course he’s been allowed to speak to clubs, with a view to leaving now in January.
“It’s difficult when you’ve got good players, talented players, and you can’t give them game time.
“He’s now at the stage where he needs to go and play again.

“It might be [at the] end of January, or it might be in the summer that he finds somewhere else.
“So he’s working hard, Tim, he’s ready for a move for any club that he feels ready for.”
Fosu-Mensah arrived at Carrington in 2014 as a 16-year-old from Ajax, and made his debut back in 2016 against Arsenal alongside United superstar Marcus Rashford.
Unlike his United team-mate, Fosu-Mensah has found it hard to force his way into the starting line-up and he may very well look to move on in search of regular first-team football.

And to boost their chances of a first league title since 2013, former Aston Villa forward Agbonlahor has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to sign goal machine Haaland.
He told talkSPORT: “You look at the Premier League teams that could do with him now – Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, they could all do with him.
“What would he do for any of those clubs now? If they had him in January, whoever signed him would win the league.”

Haaland has attracted attention across Europe – including from Real Madrid and Barcelona – having scored 19 in 16 games for Borussia Dortmund this season.

The Norwegian striker joined the Bundesliga giants last year, having snubbed a move to Old Trafford.
Manager Solskjaer met with the 20-year-old but failed to convince him move to Old Trafford as he instead joined Dortmund for just £18m.

Now, Agbonlahor reckons the Germans could demand £180m for their star man, but tipped Bayern Munich and Madrid as the frontrunners to sign him.
He said: “He’s the most complete striker out there for me.

“We’re talking about Premier League clubs wanting him. I think Bayern Munich or Real Madrid are the favourites to get him.
“I feel like Borussia Dortmund can ask for whatever they want. If you’re talking about £100million for Sancho, you’re talking £180m for Haaland.
“You’re talking ridiculous money. He’ll be the most expensive player ever when he leaves Dortmund because he’s getting better.
“He’s learning, he looks hungry. He’s not happy just to be at Dortmund and score goals, he’s trying to improve his game and he’s going to get better and better.”

Man Utd transfer target Jadon Sancho says he is now back to his best after goal run for Borussia Dortmund

JADON SANCHO believes he is back to his best after starting 2021 with a bang.
The Manchester United transfer target had failed to net in this season’s Bundesliga before back-to-back goalscoring games since the turn of the year.

Sancho revealed a single-minded focus on his game over the Christmas break got him back on track.
He told bundesliga.com: “Obviously this season has been very difficult for me personally.
“So I knew when I went away, I just focused on my game and came back raring to go.
“I’m working hard every day in training and on the pitch so I’m just happy to get my goals and assists.”

Sancho was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top transfer target last summer.
Dortmund’s £108million demands blocked a deal from happening in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The club’s bigwig Hans-Joachim Watzke claimed Sancho had ‘subconsciously prepared for a move’ to Old Trafford.

While the England international may not reach last season’s heights – 40 goal contributions in 32 league games – he has still posted impressive figures this term.

In addition to his two recent strikes, he has provided seven Bundesliga assists – including two in the recent wins over Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig.
Sancho has also scored twice with two assists in five Champions League matches, while providing four goal contributions in the DFB-Pokal.

The return to Bundesliga goalscoring form is a welcome boost for Dortmund, who sacked manager Lucien Favre after last month’s 5-1 thrashing by Stuttgart.
Favre’s replacement Edin Terzic believes some ‘small adjustments’ have got Sancho back to his best.
He said: “Sometimes you have to accelerate on your first touch, don’t get the opponent into situations where he can create two-vs-ones.

“We spoke a lot but Jadon was always doing his best in the last weeks and months, but sometimes it’s like that.
“Players are not always performing on this level. He knew that. He stayed hungry and we tried to support him as a team. We tried to support him individually.
“It worked out well in the last three games. He scored three goals, and now three assists also. He’s in a good way to get into his best form.”

Arsenal set to welcome back Matteo Guendouzi as Hertha Berlin ‘unable to afford £29m star’ after impressing in Germany

HERTHA BERLIN have accepted that Matteo Guendouzi will return to Arsenal in the summer, according to reports.
The Frenchman has impressed in the Bundesliga with the capital club losing just two of their last nine as they push away from the relegation zone.

Under manager Bruno Labbadia, Guendouzi has even scored twice including the opener in a recent 3-0 demolition of Schalke 04.
According to German outlet Bild, Hertha are putting together a plan to replace the midfielder in the summer.
Wolfsburg star Yannick Gerhardt is said to be the name of the top of their shortlist.
While there is no sense that Arsenal will recall the player this month, Berlin do not have a purchase option to make his loan stay permanent.

Therefore, the club reportedly see it as a fact that Guendouzi will leave at the end of the season, unless they can find around £29million to secure his signature.
The 21-year-old has been widely praised since heading to Germany, and Labbadia has been delighted with his impact.

The coach said last month: “[Matteo] is very, very valuable to us. We are happy that we were able to sign him.
“He’s a very, very good footballer, who has a good sense of space and is technically very strong.

“Even though he’s young, he gives instructions. He is not at all interested in whether he speaks the language.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta fell out with Guendouzi last year, before sending him out on loan.

And the Gunners are planning a mass clear out to trim down their large squad and wage bill, which may or may not include the youngster.
Mesut Ozil is out of contract in June and expected to leave North London, along with Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The exits have already begun with Sead Kolasinac loaned to Schalke at the start of January.

Leipzig 1 Dortmund 3: Watch Jadon Sancho set up Erling Haaland after scoring to fire Borussia back into title race

JADON SANCHO scored one and set up another as Borussia Dortmund pushed back into the Bundesliga title race with a win at RB Leipzig.
Under interim boss Edin Terzic, BVB have won four of their last five games and are now within five points of leaders Bayern Munich.

    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) January 9, 2021

Hansi Flick’s side fell to a shock 3-2 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday, meaning a Leipzig win would have seen them leapfrog the champions.
But a tight first-half gave way to a ferocious attacking display from the visitors.
Erling Haaland hit the bar before Sancho latched onto Marcos Reus’ smart flick to open the scoring at the far-post.
Sancho and Haaland combined for the second on 71 minutes, the Norwegian tricking his way past defenders to forge an opening.

After being teed up by Raphael Guerreiro, the winger clipped a delightful ball across the area for Haaland to head home.
The striker raced clear for a third with the clock ticking down, following a rebuttal from Leipzig that saw Dani Olmo hit the post.
Dortmund stole the ball up the pitch and Peter Gulacsi was beaten to the pass by Haaland, who dribbled around the goalkeeper and slotted home.
Leipzig notched a late consolation via former Crystal Palace forward Alexander Sorloth.

With Terzic installed until the end of the season after Lucien Favre’s sacking, Sancho, Haaland, Reus & Co face crunch matches with Bayer Leverkusen and Gladbach later this month.
Skipper Reus said post-game: “Today was a clear step forward, from me personally and from the team.
“We are happy with what we did in the second-half. It was very, very difficult in the first-half. Leipzig constantly pressured us.
“We’re incredibly proud of the second-half. We know about our own strengths. We have to show them continuously.”

Cristoph Kramer really has caught ‘em all as German World Cup winner reveals collection of 151 original Pokemon cards

CRISTOPH KRAMER is living out every boy’s dream… as the only man to have his hands on the World Cup AND all 151 original Pokemon cards.
The Borussia Monchengladbach star has double cause to celebrate in this week – having helped his side to a 1-0 win over Arminia with Pokemon also embarking on its 25th anniversary.

Christoph Kramer boasts a complete Pokemon collection

The Borussia Monchengladbach star really has caught them all

The franchise has become a worldwide phenomenon since its release in the mid 90s with old cards even fetching over £5,000 on Ebay.
But midfielder Kramer has made the headlines for catching them all… and he didn’t even need a footballer’s salary to do so.
He told SPORTbible: “I guess every child born in the 90’s was a huge Pokémon fan.
“It was great to collect the cards in primary school and it was always a kind of a childhood dream to have them all.

“I have to say that I bought some cards as well, but I didn’t pay lots.
“I don’t know exactly how much the value is, but I hope the time plays for me, like we would say in German. But I would never sell them.
“I think most of them [my team-mates] did the same as a kid, but they gave their cards away and stopped collecting. But they say respect and congratulations to me!”
Depending on the audience, fans will either be eager to ask Kramer about winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany – or getting his hands on Charizard.
