Hope United boss Rio Ferdinand calls on Government to add social media training to school syllabus in online hate fight

RIO FERDINAND believes social media training should be part of the Government’s syllabus for schools. The former England defender, 42, is manager of Hope United, BT’s team of professional footballers coming together to tackle online hate.

Rio Ferdinand wants the Government to introduce social media training in schoolsCredit: BT
And he has called on the country’s leaders to step up and play their part in helping eradicate abuse.
Ferdinand told SunSport: “People can hide behind an emoji now, they don’t have to show their face or identification.
“They can just say what they like with no consequences which is a big part of the problem.
“That’s where social media companies need to step up and the Government come together to create an environment where people are going to be held accountable for their actions.
“Long term, education is the key.
“Teaching people how to use social media is so key because some people get caught up in being a negative person online and think it’s funny but don’t realise the effect it has on people they are doing it to.
“Once you educate those people too we are on the right track.
“Definitely, it needs to be part of the syllabus at school. Listen, a kid could be derailed at school just through social media hate, 100 per cent that happens.

“Technology is an ever-evolving world out there. Educating just the children would be wrong. Parents need that as well.
“For adults outside of education, that’s why Hope United is great because of the reach BT have, doing media work, trying to get it out there to hit people between the eyes with it so they don’t miss it. It’s vital.”
A staggering one in ten people have received abuse online in the past year, leading to players from across the Home Nations to come together and make a united stand.
Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Lucy Bronze, Andy Robertson and Gareth Bale are among the stars to join Hope United.
The aim is to recognise hate crime, inform people – especially youngsters – how to behave on social media and support victims by encouraging conversation.
Today, they are encouraging everyone to share the Pledge on social media, which says: “Hate has no place on my timeline, in my inbox, in my life. Hope can beat hate if we all stand together.”
Like many, manager Ferdinand has suffered abuse in different forms throughout his life – from bullying as a child to anonymous messages on social media.
He said: “I was lucky when I was a kid, I was quite OK handling situations like that through banter or batting it off or ignoring it. But not all kids are built like that. Everyone’s situation is different.
The moment you talk, there is a lightness that comes over your body, you feel lighter, more relieved and able to get on with your day, week, month, year so much easierRio Ferdinand
“When I became a teenager I was playing football in front of crowds a lot and you’d hear comments that build you to deal with those situations.
“I’m not saying it’s right but it’s part of football that you get people from opposing teams saying stuff.
“You need to be able to not allow it to derail you from your mission which for me was to make it as a footballer. It definitely gave me thick skin for when social media came about.”
The Manchester United legend has his own coping mechanisms: focusing on the positive comments, turning social media notifications off as well as opening up to family and friends.
He encouraged others to do the same.
Ferdinand continued: “The important part for children to understand is having a goal in life, whether that’s to be a milkman or footballer, don’t allow negative people to control your life and control your destiny.
“It’s down to you but within that you’ve got to talk. You have to talk if you have issues.
“No one gets to where they want to in life without some bumps in the road. The more you talk, the better you will navigate to your destination.
The squad includes Home Nations stars Jordan Henderson, Gareth Bale and Marcus Rashford
Fans are being encouraged to share the Pledge onlineCredit: BT
“People post looking for validation from people online. Try not to focus on the negatives.
“Whether you have ten followers or millions, our eyes always get drawn to the negative comments. The more you can train to eliminate and skate past those negative comments, the better.
“Reach out to friends and family or a senior position in your environment such as school or work place. People do genuinely want to help.
“For me, it’s my wife. Sometimes I even talk to my kids about it which then helps them. Friends, people at the workplace. It comes up in conversation and a lot of it is not feeling alone.
“When you mention it, there’s always someone who says, ‘I’ve had that as well’. Then you find out how they dealt with it and learn from other people’s experiences which is important.
“People get bogged down by negativity and hate on the internet but the moment you talk, there is a lightness that comes over your body, you feel lighter, more relieved and able to get on with your day, week, month, year so much easier.”
The reality of abuse hit home for Ferdinand once again covering Wolves vs United for BT Sport in May when he was targeted by a fan performing a monkey gesture.
The man was arrested and bailed by West Midlands Police.
It was, naturally, a tough day for the pundit.
    [embedded content]
He concluded: “Wolves was very difficult. We thought, ‘Wow everyone back in the stadium, we can have some fun,’ and then someone ruins it with their ignorant nature and their lack of education.
“The club, police and BT all acted very well in the situation.
“Things like that need to be highlighted and consequences need to be there.
“That is part of the problem: people make stupid comments and don’t think about the people they are saying it to and there are no consequences.
“There is no education for these people so they will continue doing it – without the education, these people don’t change.”

BT’s Hope United Pledge will allow you to show your support for the fight against online hate this summer. Visit bt.com/hopeunited to find out more and share the Hope United Pledge on social media. Together we can beat online hate.

The last couple weeks, it’s been unreal to see fans back. HoweverTo the Wolves fan who has just been thrown out for doing a monkey chant at me. You need to be dismissed from football & educated. Come meet me & I will help you understand what it feels like to be racially abused!— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) May 23, 2021

🥊 BETTING SPECIAL: Get Logan Paul at 120/1 or Money Man 20/1 to win

    THAT’S A WRAP
Thank you for joining the SunSport’s LIVE blog of the boxing in Telford on Saturday night.
Daniel Dubois was the star of the show following his emphatic second round knockout victory against Bogdan Dinu.
And Nathan Heaney also impressed after securing a third round stoppage win.
Tommy Fury also extended his unbeaten record to 6-0 after he outpointed Jordan Grant over four rounds.
    Until next time!
    DUBOIS REACTION
“It has been a rough ride and I am glad to be back, I did have some things flashing through my mind but I just concentrated on what Shane said.
“My sister just qualified for the Olympics, this is just the start for her, she has to go and get the gold now and I am back with a belt as well.
“I want to take things easy with Shane and then we will get there.
“They can bring me whoever they want next. I want to clear the Joyce fight up and get the rerun, but I want to be the best I can be.”
    DYNAMITE
Here is how Daniel Dubois knocked out Bogdan Dinu in the second round.

    SHANE McGUIGAN REACTION
“Hes only 23 years of age, hes young, he’s obviously suffered a little loss.
“He needs to go back and rebuild.
“I think he put on a fantastic performance, give us six months to a year.”
McGuigan then declared that he believes Dubois can go no and beat any heavyweight in the world in the future.
He added: “I’ve never felt power like it on the pads.”
    ROUND TWO
    INCREDIBLE! DUBOIS WINS BY KNCOKOUT!
Dinu fails to beat the count after Dubois landed a huge right hand.
The Londoner landed flush on the Romanian’s chin, which sent him sprawling across the canvas.
And he didn’t even both in trying to get to his feet.
What a KO from Dubois, but we know he carries that power.
    ROUND ONE
A strong start for Dubois who is forcing Dinu on the backfoot.
Dubois is looking to throw the power punches, with Dinu looking to counter with a right hook.
But trainer McGuigan will be happy with what he’s seen so far.
    HERE WE GO
The fighters are making their way to the ring.
A reminder that the WBA interim heavyweight title is on the line.
    DAN THE MAN
Not long now until the main event where Daniel Dubois is looking to get back to winning ways.
The Londoner faces Bogdan Dinu is his first bout since his defeat to Joe Joyce.
And with new trainer Shane McGuigan besides him, Dubois is looking to make an impression.
    BODY BLOW
Here’s how Heaney secured his stoppage victory.

    HITMAN HEANEY
It was a great performance from Heaney who moves to 12-0.

    ROUND THREE
IT’S OVER! HEANEY WINS BY KNOCKOUT!
Heaney’s body shots proved to be too much, as a right hook to the body sent Markov crashing to the canvas.
And he failed to beat the count.
A very impressive display from the 32-year-old.
    ROUND TWO
Heaney is starting to unload as he looks to let his right hand go.
A body shot causes Markov to wince as he returns with a left hook.
But the body shots are having a huge effect as he takes a deep breath when walking back to his corner.
Big signs that Heaney is already wearing his Bulgarian opponent down.
HEANEY vs MARKOV – ROUND ONE
The opening round goes to Heaney who fails to get carried away by his fans cheering him on.
He keeps Markov at bay with his jab, and shows he is a superior boxer.
His quick hands already look to be marking up Markov’s face.
    TOO FAST TOO FURIOUS
Here is what Fury has to say after his win.

    HERE WE GO
Heaney comes into this middleweight dust-up having wo n all 11 of his fights.
Meanwhile Markov boasts a record of 6-14-2 and has lost his last two outings inside the ring.
Markov has fought eight times in the UK and has lost on each occasion.
    NATHAN HEANEY vs ILIYAN MARKOV
The roof at the Telford international centre is about to come off.
Six hundred sun and beer-soaked Stokies have made the trip down to watch the local hero in middleweight action.
Markov is in for something special in a few minutes, when the wild entrance happens, poor little fella
    TOMMY ON JAKE
And here is what Tommy Fury had to say on Jake Paul.
    “I’m ready, whenever.
“Come and get it. Listen I’m a Fury, it’s in my f*****g blood. If you want it, come and get it.”
    JOHN FURY REACTION
Here’s what John Fury had to say on his son Tommy potentially fighting Jake Paul.
“Good on Jake Paul, doing what he’s doing. Good luck to the kid, he’s game enough to get in the ring. Any man who gets in there is a game man.
“But listen, it’s a big difference coming from no crowd to a big crowd.
“It’s a first night out for them, they are very noisy. It’s brand new again for him.
“But Jake Paul, we’ll have you next mate! If you think he’s no good, we’ll take Jake Paul next. Tyson’s undercard, 24th July. Jake Paul.”
Though that fight won’t take place on July 24 as Paul is facing Tyrone Woodley in August.
    FURY REACTION
Tommy Fury – and his dad John – called out Jake Paul after the bout.
And the light-heavyweight declared he learned more in his fight with Grant than in any of his previous five outings.
TNT then insisted that his career is a marathon and not a sprint, and won’t be rushed.
    FURY WINS
Tommy Fury makes is 6-0 after winning on judges scores of 40-36.
Though he didn’t get the stoppage, Fury impressed with his boxing skills and ring IQ.
    ROUND FOUR
A solid closing round from Grant who put the pressure on knowing he needed a knockout to win.
And even though he caught Fury and caused him problems, he was unable to land the decisive blow.
Without a doubt Fury’s hardest fight of his career so far.
    ROUND THREE
Another solid round from Fury who lands a number of clean uppercuts.
Grant is still catching Fury, but his punches semm to have no effect at Tyson’s brother stalks his opponent around the ring.
    Fury is three rounds up.
    ROUND TWO
A much better round from Fury who deals with Grant’s aggressive style.
His jab constantly off put Grant’s rhythm and the 23-year-old’s face is marked up.
Grant was unable to close the distance on Fury who was more than happy to box at range.
Fury winning this fight with just two rounds left.
    ROUND ONE
A solid opening round for Scotsman Grant who starts quick and forced Fury on the backfoot.
Fury landed the neater punches on the inside, but Grant has shown he is up for the challenge.
Not an opening round the fans were expecting to see.
    TOMMY FURY VS JORDAN GRANT
    Here we go!
Both light-heavyweights are making their way to the ring.
Expect Fury to call out Jake Paul should he emerge victorious.
Fury is 5-0 inside the squared circle, while Grant has won both of his bouts.
