Giant Game of Thrones star and boxer Hafthor Bjornsson comes out of retirement and looks to break all-time record

GIANT Game of Thrones star turned boxer Hafthor Bjornsson has come out of retirement to break an all-time world record. The Icelandic beast, who is 6ft 8in tall and weights nearly 23 stone, was once strongman’s number one star after winning World’s Strongest Man in 2018.

But Bjornsson turned his back on the sport in order to become a boxer.
The mega-hitter slimmed down and built up his stamina before delivering a stunning KO of rival Eddie Hall.
And Bjornsson then declared he was retiring in order to assess his future options.
But the 34-year-old, who played Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane on hit TV show Game of Thrones, has now made TWO major announcements.

In news which is sure to delight strength fans, Bjornsson has declared his intent to set a new raw powerlifting world-record.
The sport sees hulks aim to hit their top weights in three events – deadlifts, squats and bench-press.
The numbers from all three are then combined for a final total score.
And Bjornsson is confident he can beat the current record of 1182.5kg, held by Dan Bell, at the end of 2023.

That would be three-and-a-half years after setting a new deadlift world record of 501kg, which sparked his boxing rivalry with Hall.
But there’s further news from Bjornsson, who has also confirmed a return to professional strongman in 2024.
His last event was the successful Arnold Classic in 2020.
And Bjornsson reckons his foray into powerlifting will serve as a great stepping stone for a return to his former love.
The current World’s Strongest Man is Scottish behemoth Tom Stoltman, who has won the trophy two times in a row.
But it remains to be seen if 2018 winner Bjornsson competes in the tournament, having previously vowed to never work with organisers Giants Live again.
However, he does plan on regaining his Arnold Classics crown, which he won three times in a row before leaving strongman.
Bjornsson said in a YouTube video: “I love training heavy and I want to build my legacy in the strength world.

“So my decision is to come back into powerlifting. I want to break the all-time raw powerlifting world record.
“Powerlifting is squat, bench and deadlift, three lifts. And I want to break the all-time total, which is today 1182.5kg.
“That record is held by Dan Bell, a great powerlifter. Who knows, maybe before I break it he will break it again.
“I like competition, I like to be challenged. The goal is to do it at the end of the year.
“It’s crazy but I have a lot of muscle and strength memory, so slowly but surely my strength is coming back.
“Hopefully my body will be good to me like it was before, stay injury-free.
“So that’s the plan, to be very successful in powerlifting, build my legacy, build my name in the strength world.
“[Then in 2024] I will go back to strongman and give my absolute best there again.
“I want to compete at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio and Rogue Invitationals.

“Those are the two shows I have my eyes on. I want to win those, I truly believe when I break the powerlifting record my starting strengths are going to be very good and will translate well into strongman.
“That’s the plan. Big announcement, big goals, but I’m a big guy with a big heart with a lot of ambition and big dreams.” More

What Tyson Fury asked George Groves in awkward confrontation after boxer tipped Oleksandr Usyk to beat him

And the battle of the unbeaten pound-for-pound stars has divided opinions from the boxing world.
And ex-world champion Groves – a self-professed Usyk “fan boy” – left Fury unhappy with his prediction.
He told ProBoxingFans: “I saw Tyson the other day. He said, ‘Why are you picking Usyk and not picking me?’
“I said, ‘Someone’s gotta go the other way Tyson! It keeps it entertaining, keeps it interesting.’

“I think Usyk’s his toughest fight to date – what a fighter. And Tyson Fury – what a fighter.”
Saudi Arabia was a frontrunner to host the historic unification bout with Usyk, 36, even agreeing a financial package.
But Fury, 34, has not done so which has led to Wembley Stadium becoming a new alternative for the fight.
Groves – who retired in 2019 – is such a fan of Usyk he could not pick against the masterful Ukrainian.

He said to Boxing UK: “You’ve asked me the question that I have the unpopular opinion on.
“I’m such an Usyk fan. I don’t know if he is big enough to challenge Fury if Fury’s really on it and up for it.
“But, when it comes to ability, Usyk’s the best heavyweight in the world by a country mile, in my opinion.
“I don’t know. I’ll just go Usyk cause I’m an Usyk fan boy.”

Fury, 34, is champing at the bit to fight in April – so much so that he’s teed up a quadrilogy fight with former foe Wilder.
That’s according to World Boxing News, who claim Fury’s teams have been in “secret talks with Wilder for weeks.”

It’s claimed the shock fight would take place at Wembley Stadium.
Fury and Wilder have shared the ring three times in the last four years, with the pair’s first meeting ending in a controversial draw.

The Gypsy King won their rematch and trilogy fight in emphatic fashion, registering seventh and 11th-round knockout victories.
Fury’s historic clash with Usyk was initially slated for March 4 but delays in finalising the deal have pushed back the date.
Saudi Arabia were the frontrunners to land the bout, although the fight is reportedly unlikely to take place in the Kingdom.
Despite the delay in finalising the deal, Fury’s co-promoter Frank Warren is adamant the Brit will lock horns with the undefeated Ukrainian at the end of April.

Despite his lack of experience, many fight fans are tipping YouTuber turned boxer Paul to turn over Fury – the younger brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson.
Matchroom Boxing chief Hearn was initially part of that group but has since changed his mind, insisting the contest is a “50-50” fight.
The 43-year-old told Boxing UK: “I’m quite looking forward to it.
“I did think that Jake Paul would win the fight, but I think I’ve changed my mind.

“It’s a 50/50 though which is a little bit worrying in itself.”
Hearn initially expected Paul’s mind games to be too much for Fury, who has been trolled by the American for the best part of two years.
During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Hearn predicted: “Mentally, he’ll break Tommy Fury.
“I think he’ll mess with Tommy mentally, and I just think by the time they get in the ring, if they do get in the ring, I think Tommy will be defeated before the fight’s even taken place.

“And I think will win by knockout.”
Paul and Fury, 23 and 26 respectfully, were due to face off again in a press conference in Saudi last week but the latter skipped the event.
That irked Paul, who said: “I’m used to his behaviour at this point, he’s unprofessional and he’s a flake.
“He’s not a serious businessman or a serious fighter and I’m going to prove that.
“It’s why this fight is called, ‘The Truth’ because the truth is going to come out.

But now Diaz, who has launched his own promotion Real Fight Inc, wants to see Fury take on a different MMA star.
The 37-year-old Californian tweeted: “Ben Rothwell vs Tyson Fury,” followed by a fist emoji and the Real Fight Twitter handle.
Rothwell, 41, is a 6ft 4ins 120kg heavyweight who won 39 of his 53 professional MMA bouts – appearing 17 times on UFC cards.
