Tyson Fury next fight ‘being finalised this weekend’ with WBC belt holder set to face Joe Joyce destroyer Zhilei Zhang

TYSON FURY’S promoter says his next fight is being finalised “this weekend” with Zhilei Zhang the frontrunner to be his opponent. The WBC heavyweight champion defeated Derek Chisora last time out in December via a tenth round TKO at Tottenham Stadium.

That was on the back of him knocking out Dillian Whyte at Wembley last April in the sixth.
After talks collapsed for his unification showdown with Oleksandr Usyk, we reported how Wembley Stadium had allegedly been put on hold for two dates in July as Fury plotted his next title defence.
Former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr, who famously beat Anthony Joshua for the belts in 2019 before losing the rematch, was in the mix to be his opponent.
As was China’s 39-year-old Zhang, who is coming off last month’s major upset victory over Joe Joyce.

Now Top Rank chief Bob Arum, Fury’s US promoter, has said that it is Zhang rather than the WBC ranked number two Mexican who is the frontrunner for the title shot.
And he also revealed that the contract could be all done and dusted before the start of next week.
Arum told Ringside Reporter: “No not really [Andy Ruiz]. We’re focusing on the Chinese kid that beat Joe Joyce, Zhilei Zhang, he’s the frontrunner for that fight.
“It’s likely for July, we’re trying to close that out over this weekend.”

“Big Bang” Zhang instantly called Fury out as he outlined his ambition for a dream homecoming in China after his stunning upset against Joyce.
The 6ft 6in heavyweight returned to London 11 years after losing to Anthony Joshua in the Olympics.
But he made no mistakes in his quest for redemption in the capital as he brutally left Joyce unable to continue following six rounds due to eye swelling.
Zhang inherited the WBO interim title and mandatory challenger status for the full belt held by Usyk but instead it was WBC champion Fury who he wanted after bouncing back from defeat to Filip Hrgovic, 30, in August.
He told SecondsOut: “Tyson Fury in China.
“I feel like people were questioning about my conditioning and stamina after the Hrgovic fight.
“But for me, I have such a successful training camp. My boxing and conditioning trainers stayed on top of it.
“I know that Joe Joyce wanted to take this to deep water and drown me, but I’m here.
“You can drown me if you want, but I’m ready for twelve rounds.” More

Boxing legend Carl Froch ‘walked straight onto’ huge punch in sparring and was dropped by fellow Brit

CARL FROCH has named the only man to down him in sparring. The former world super-middleweight champ revealed that a fellow British hero “tried to knock me out” in training – and once “nearly did”.

Granite-chinned Froch was floored just twice in fights – recovering to beat Jermain Taylor and George Groves.
And the sole man to send him to the ground sparring was a weight division heavier than him – Tony Bellew.
The Liverpudlian, now 45, was world cruiserweight king from 2016-17, whereas 45-year-old Froch from Nottingham reigned many times in the division below from 2008-14.
The pair regularly sparred and Cobra said on his YouTube channel: “He didn’t bully me or anything or try and knock me out – well, he did try and knock me out, and he nearly did once.

“The only person to put me down in sparring was Tony Bellew.
“I backed him into a corner, threw a bit of a lazy right hand, he counter-punched me and I walked straight onto it.”
Froch’s admission comes after he warned ex-UFC hero Darren Till he’d willing settle their social media feud in the ring – despite retiring in 2014.
Till, 30, from Liverpool, is considering a go at boxing and has relentlessly trolled one of Britain’s all-time great fighters.

But the legend responded to “The Gorilla” on his Froch on Fighting podcast by saying: “So he’s giving ‘The Cobra’ some beef and he’s never boxed?
“What’s going on? Does he not like being alive? Does he not like breathing?”
“I’ve been retired 10 years, but you know what I’m like.
“I’ll exchange banter, and if it makes sense I’ll step in the ring and give one of these MMA fighters or YouTubers an absolute pasting, just for the sake of boxing.” More

John Ryder plots one of boxing’s biggest EVER shocks vs Canelo and become only second Brit to win world title in Mexico

JOHN RYDER is dreaming of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in British boxing history. The 10-1 outsider takes on undisputed super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez in Mexico on Saturday night with only 50 out of the 60,000 fans there cheering on the Islington southpaw.

If 34-year-old Ryder achieves the impossible by winning the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring titles, it would rank alongside previous feats overseas by legends such as Ken Buchanan, John H Stracey and Lloyd Honeyghan.
And it would be some achievement for the boxer who worked as a bouncer at East London nightclubs in 2017 after a couple of defeats left him languishing.
With typical understatement, Ryder said: “I know it’s going to be hostile. But to go and fight a champion, you should go to their backyard to take their titles and that’s what I am doing.
“Most fighters have gone to Vegas or Texas to fight him but I’m in Guadalajara in the lion’s den.

“People think I am here for the paycheck, I am not. I am here to show that dreams can come true.”
Canelo, 32, has lost just two of his 62 fights with 39 knockouts while Stracey, now 72,  remains the only Brit to ever win a world title in Mexico after he stunned Jose Napoles in 1975.
Over pie and mash in Camden, Stracey told Ryder: “We boxed in the biggest bullring in the world, probably around 40,000 people.
“Just before my ringwalk they put me right next to where the bulls were kept and the smell was awful!

“I am sure they were trying to put me off. It was hostile, they wanted their man to win and you’ll get that, too.
“It can be daunting and frightening but boxers don’t get frightened.”Ryder, who has won 32 of his 37 pro bouts, promised Stracey he would not be overawed by facing Canelo.
He said: “I have met him a couple of times but that was with a fan-boy cap on.
“The respect is there but it is not going to be handshakes and selfies, I am here to do a job.”

Gervonta Davis gets 90 days house arrest putting career in doubt for role in hit-and-run weeks after Ryan Garcia fight

GERVONTA DAVIS has been put on house arrest for 90 days for his involvement in a 2020 hit-and-run.The boxing pound-for-pound superstar’s career has been put on hold after his sentencing in Baltimore, Maryland.

Davis admitted to fleeing the scene of a car accident in 2020, after his Lamborghini Urus smashed into a car carrying four people – including a pregnant woman.
Davis was in the car with two other people when he ran a red light.
All three left the scene before officers could assist.
The fighter entered a guilty plea including a sentence of 60 days of unsupervised home detention.

One of the passengers in the other car, Jyair Smith, spoke out against the plea deal.
“I begged Mr. Gervonta Davis, I looked him in his eyes,” Davis said.
“I said, ‘I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant.’ He never once came over to help me.”
The 90-day house arrest is a far cry from the maximum penalty of 50 months in prison if found guilty.

The new sentencing comes days after Davis secured a significant win over fighting superstar Ryan Garcia.
Davis destroyed Garcia in their hugely-anticipated catchweight clash with a seventh-round body shot KO.
The rousing defeat catapulted Davis’ stardom, with many speculating he may be the new face of the sport.
Now, his sentence calls into question if he will be allowed into the boxing ring again.
The fight was allowed to take place after sentencing was delayed so the pair could finally clash.
In a separate incident, Broward County Police arrested Davis in February after he allegedly hit a woman using a “closed hand type slap.”
The woman suffered a small cut on the inside of her mouth from the alleged contact, according to the incident report.

I’m the barrister who saved Anthony Joshua’s boxing career – he thanked me with Klitschko tickets but I turned him down

ONE of London’s top criminal barristers has spoken out on how he helped save Anthony Joshua’s boxing career. But a family wedding meant he had to turn down ringside seats for AJ’s epic Wembley win against Wladimir Klitschko.
Barrister Tony Wyatt has spoken out on his role in saving Anthony Joshua’s boxing careerCredit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAqRYYQ7fHs&t=2293s
But Wyatt couldn’t be there to see Joshua beat Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley in 2017Credit: Getty
Barrister Tony Wyatt has revealed how he helped keep Joshua’s career on track in the run up to the 2012 Olympics.
It came after AJ, who has spoken openly about his past, was discovered by police with a large amount of cannabis in his car.
Wyatt was approached by Joshua’s coach at Finchley Boxing Club in 2011 and was told to be able to fight in the Olympics, AJ had to qualify through the European Qualification Tournament.
However, the “trouble” he had got himself into meant he had his licence taken away from him.
    READ MORE ON ANTHONY JOSHUA
Recalling a conversation with the judge and prosecutor, Wyatt acknowledged that Joshua had committed the offence.
However, the potential punishment could have ended AJ’s career as he would not have been able to fight in the European qualifying for the Olympics.
As a result, Kent “fronted that up” to the judge, and AJ submitted a guilty plea.
He said on the Anything Goes with James English podcast: “If he were to plead guilty of possession you could give him the harshest possible period of unpaid work.

“That would allow him to get his licence back. It would allow him to fight in the Europeans. It would allow him to fight in the Olympics.
“It would allow him in his future to fight in America which he could never have done if he had supply on his record.
“It allows him to have his life. It also allows him to spend 300 hours in boxing clubs in a few months time once he’s famous, helping kids who might otherwise be on the streets. So it allows it to be paid forward.”
Wyatt said ultimately going down that route helped save Joshua’s career.
He continued: “As an outcome for a case like this, surely that’s a far more positive outcome to society than sending him into a prison for a short amount of time, ruining his future, no career left. Surely that’s better?
“The judge agreed. Prosecutor ultimately agreed with some encouragement from the judge. And that’s the route we went down.”
Joshua was consequently able to get his licence back, and therefore fight in the European qualifying for the Olympic Games.
He went on to win gold at the 2012 Olympics in London before turning pro the following year.
One of Joshua’s greatest nights came in 2017, when he knocked out Klitschko in the 11th round at Wembley.
But Kent couldn’t be there to see it.
He revealed: “You mention the Klitscko fight. He gave me ringside seats to that and I couldn’t go because of a bloody family wedding.

“It wasn’t even my family, it was my wife’s family!
“I sat at the wedding watching the fights with my wife kicking me under the table! I was like look ‘I didn’t go to the fight, I’m at least watching the fight!'” More

‘Can you not read?’ – KSI and Tommy Fury erupt into Twitter spat amid rumoured talks for celebrity boxing fight

KSI and Tommy Fury erupted into a Twitter spat amid rumoured talks for a celebrity boxing fight between the two. YouTube, music and influencer boxing star KSI looked on course to finally settle his score with arch rival Jake Paul this year.

But those plans look to have faced the KO after Paul was beaten by Fury in February by split-decision in Saudi Arabia.
KSI has since revealed he now wants to instead face Fury and finish what Paul started.
He tweeted: “I’d much rather fight and beat Tommy Fury so I can ruin Jake Paul’s legacy.”
But a shocked Fury, 23, responded: “Wait. Beat who?”

To which KSI, 29, bluntly fired back: “Beat you. Can you not read?”
Paul, 26, snubbed a Fury rematch or talks with KSI to instead return on August 5 in Texas against 38-year-old ex-UFC star Nate Diaz.
So KSI will refuse to wait around for Paul and instead try to one-up his arch enemy by beating Fury.
He told SunSport: “I want Tommy Fury, simple as that. I’m not going to waste my time with Jake Paul.

“He wants to fight Nate Diaz, an MMA fighter who isn’t known for his boxing; black belt in jujitsu, blah, blah, blah.
“Maybe in the UFC ring it would be a bit more entertaining, in the MMA ring yeah, but in the boxing ring everyone just knows Jake is going to win that.
“I’m not just going to waste my time, I’m going to go straight for Tommy and do what Jake Paul couldn’t.”
KSI returns on May 13 at Wembley Arena against millionaire nightclub tycoon-turned 9-0 boxer Joe Fournier, 40.
But in the background, his promoter Kalle Sauerland revealed ongoing negotiations with Fury and his dad John.
And KSI insisted the talks to face the brother of unbeaten heavyweight champion Tyson is no publicity stunt.
He said: “It’s so funny, because a lot of people think it’s all cap.
“A lot of people think I’m just chatting out my a***. Does it look like I’m chatting out my a***?
“We’re working on it, man. Just a few thing but I think we’re very close and I’m pretty sure, fingers crossed by next week, we’ll see.”

KSI defied pleas from his team to stop 15st Logan Paul from jumping on him at WrestleMania just weeks before next fight

KSI defied the pleas from his entire team to stop Logan Paul from jumping on him from the top rope at WrestleMania. The YouTube, music and crossover boxing star accompanied Paul – wearing a Prime drink suit – in his match with Seth Rollins.

And KSI got his first taste of WWE action when he took a frog splash from Paul, who was aiming for Rollins.
The spot came just six weeks before KSI’s next fight, against millionaire nightclub tycoon-turned boxer Joe Fournier.
So it proved hard to convince his camp that letting Paul – who weighs around 15 stone – collapse on him was a good idea.
But KSI told SunSport: “Trust me, it was hard. From the Sidemen, to my trainers, to my manager, they were all stressing.

“And the funny thing is, I was the one who was gassed the most. I was like, ‘Let’s do it, this is sick, I love this idea.’
“So, they had a few plans to try change it so that Logan wouldn’t be jumping on me.
“But I was like, ‘That’s boring, man. That’s not ground breaking, I want this to be huge.’ I was like, ‘I can take a bump, it’s fine. Let’s do it.’
“So yeah, I talked them into it, we did some practise and then we just went for it.”

KSI, 29, thankfully emerged unscathed for his DAZN pay-per-view fight with 9-0 Fournier, 40, next Saturday at Wembley Arena.
It will be his seventh bout in the ring, following a draw in 2018 and win over Paul in their rematch a year later.
But the pair are remarkably now friends and business partners having launched hydration drink Prime to great success.
Paul, 28, is yet to box since taking American legend Floyd Mayweather, 46, the distance in their June 2021 exhibition.
Instead the social media sensation has focussed his efforts on the WWE, earning himself a new contract.
And although KSI was talked into receiving a frog splash from the air, it could be his first and last finisher in the WWE ring.
KSI said: “I enjoyed it but it’s just not for me, man. It’s a lot work, it’s a lot of work.
“I see what Logan does, I’ve seen behind the scenes what he has to do in order to entertain as well as take bumps. It’s too much for me.”
