I told my 5-year-old son he must learn to take a punch first if he wants to follow his dreams to be a boxer, says Canelo

CANELO ALVAREZ revealed his five-year-old son is already dreaming of following in his footsteps – but first he needs to learn to take a punch. The Mexican superstar was inspired into a career of fighting after watching his older brothers in action.

And amazingly, by 15 Canelo was a professional knocking out fully grown men.
Now, his young son Saul Adiel wants to continue the family trade and is already convinced he will headline in Las Vegas like his famous father.
In an exclusive interview with SunSport, Canelo said: “He loves boxing. He told me, ‘Hey, when am I going to fight in Vegas?’
“I said, ‘OK, take it easy. When you grow up and you’re 18 years old, maybe you can fight in Vegas. First you’re going to take the first punch and then let me know if you want to be a boxer or not.’”

Canelo, a doting dad also to his daughters Emily, Mia and Maria, has sacrificed half his life to the sport that has made him millions.
And he warned his son would have to be willing to show that same dedication in order to get his blessing to box.
Canelo said: “He needs to love boxing, he needs to have that discipline. He needs to be able to handle that sacrifice that comes with boxing.
“Plus that talent, because if you don’t have talent, find another sport.”

For Canelo, boxing is a family affair with older brothers Ramon, Ricardo and Rigoberto all fighters.
So for as difficult and nerve-wracking as it could be as a father, the four-division champion will not stand in Saul Jr’s way of doing the same.
He said: “Boxing is hard and you have your kid there who loves boxing it’s hard, it’s going to be hard for me.
“But if he loves boxing that much then I need to support him no matter what.”
Canelo last year topped Forbes’ sporting rich list as the highest-paid fighter on the planet after earning £90MILLION.
And in 2021, he cemented his place further by winning all four super-middleweight belts to become undisputed 168lb king.

But even after 63 fights and 18 years in the ring, Canelo still continues to make history.
As on Saturday he will take on American Jermell Charlo, 33, marking the first time two current undisputed champions have fought.
Charlo moves up TWO divisions to do so and Canelo has vowed to make the light-middleweight champ pay for his previous trash-talk.
Ahead of the Showtime PPV fight, he said: “I love boxing and I love these kind of fights.
“And it motivates me more and more because he never believed in my skills, he’s always calling me out, always talking s*** about me.

“He never believed in my skills and right now, I’m able to show him my skills and why I’m here. That motivates me.

From the first round the Chinese fighter dominated proceedings with his supreme power.
Joyce simply had no answer to Zhang’s fierce jab and punching prowess.
By the end of the third round, The Juggernaught looked out on his feet as Zhang turned to the screw.
A devastating right hook floored the Brit, who was unable to beat the 10 count.
After the fight, Zhang called out Tyson Fury.
He said in his ringside interview: “To the audience, I want to ask you a question: Do you want to see me shut Tyson Fury up?”
While analysing his performance, he added: “I am happy. Like I said before the fight, it is going to end sooner than the first fight and I did it. Joe, hell of a fighter, respect to him. I like him and respect him, everybody please care for him.” More

Eddie Hearn rules out ‘dangerous’ Anthony Joshua fight but suggests stunning Wembley bout for Brit

EDDIE HEARN has insisted fighting Anthony Joshua would be “dangerous” for Joe Joyce after defeat to Zhilei Zhang. Joyce suffered the first loss of his career in April when Zhang battered his eye to the point of no return after six rounds.

And he bravely jumped right into a rematch knowing his career at the top level would be on the line.
This time around, it was an even more devastating finish as a lead southpaw right hook in the third left Joyce, 38, out for the count.
It leaves Joshua’s promoter Hearn talking down the chance of the 2016 Olympian ever fighting AJ.
He told iFL TV: “That would be dangerous. Honestly, he shouldn’t be boxing.

“He’s had a great career, he should’ve been Olympic champion, he won the interim world heavyweight title and I’m sure he’s made a lot of money as well.
“AJ punches as hard as Zhang with much more speed. It’s not the right fight to make, you have to protect these guys.
“It’s a car crash that fight. A car crash.”
Zhang, 40, is still the WBO “interim” champion and thus the mandatory challenger for the belt held by Oleksandr Usyk, 36.

But Hearn has welcomed a massive fight between the Chinese star and Joshua, 33, in the Far East or at Wembley Stadium.
He said: “AJ has always fancied that fight.
“He beat him in the amateurs, it was a good fight. Of course, [we’d do it in China]. Money talks, we can do it at Wembley.
“We want to make the Wilder fight. I think Zhang is an easier fight, it’s still dangerous, but why not?”

Conor Benn WINS in boxing return as Brit beats Rodolfo Orozco on points in first fight since suspension

CONOR BENN stormed to an impressive comeback win but then admitted: “I feared for my future”.The Essex fighter last stepped into the ring in April 2022 after his proposed dust-up with arch-rival Chris Eubank Jr. was canned last October following a failed drugs test.

The Brit beat Rodolfo Orozco on points in OrlandoCredit: Ed Mulholland/Matchroom.
Benn, 26, was cleared to return by the National Anti-Doping Panel in July even and blew off the cobwebs with a brutal, unanimous points win over tough Mexican Rodolfo Orozco.
But an emotional Benn told SunSport afterwards, with a tear in his eye, that “months of hell” had “killed him” and left him contemplating his career.
British Boxing Board of Control chief Robert Smith blasted before the 10-rounder in Orlando that Benn shouldn’t have been allowed back in the ring until he was cleared by all the regulators.
The BBBofC and VADA – who failed Benn twice in the lead-up to the original Eubank fight – both appealed his reinstatement.

But Brighton-based Benn, who tested positive for fertility drug clomifene, which is a banned substance, has always insisted his innocence.
He told SunSport:” I can’t begin to tell you how bad it’s been, It’s been hell.
“I didn’t think I was going to fight anymore and it killed me. It broke my heart so I am just over the moon to be back.” British boxing boss Smith says that Benn is still not cleared to fight in the UK, leaving the prospect of rescheduling the crunch with Eubank in the air for now.
Benn, though, lashed out at the doubters.

He added:” How can you tell me this isn’t politics, ego, or money when I’m just the one in the middle of it.
“The wrong questions are being asked but I’m willing to answer all the questions that need to be answered.
“You’ve got to remember this, it ain’t the truth. It’s not the truth. But what’s seen in darkness always comes to light, and clean hearts always win.I am hiding from nothing.”
This clash was a late addition to the card put on by Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn but Benn revealed the BBBofC did their best to scupper his return over the pond.
He explained: “It’s been really challenging to get to where I am now. There needs to be more care for British fighters with their own commission, their own governing body.” Benn was a class above Orozco, pummeling him with a series of crushing blows in a one-sided yet lively battle.
He looked razor sharp and was on the front foot straight from the off.
It was a testament to the Mexican’s heart that he was still standing at the end of 10 brutal rounds.
Benn knows the noise around a meeting with Eubank will only get louder.
But the son of the legendary Dark Destroyer, Nigel Benn, who was here in Florida, has been through so much just being able to fight another day is enough for now.
He said: “Whatever’s meant to be will be. I can’t do any more than I am.
“This is the card I’ve been dealt and it’s the card I’ve got to play, irrelevant of how it looks, how it’s pushed. I just do the best I can and try and stay in the best frame of mind, because it hasn’t been easy to stay in a good frame of mind.

“It’s been so hard, but I fought hard this fight, you know, I was down and out, I almost lost this fight. Almost lost. You know, I almost didn’t get back up. So, whatever happens, happens. And wherever doors open, open. And wherever doors shut, shut.
“This guy seemed a lot tougher than Eubank would. This was at 154 lbs and was probably was at 165 lbs in the ring so I’ll happily again come up to 160 lbs and smash Eubank.” More

Joe Joyce’s top-level career was ended by a sensational right hook from 21st Chinese monster Zhilei Zhang.
The Juggernaut celebrated his 38th birthday on Tuesday and only wanted rematch revenge over the man who battered his eye shut in April for a gift.
But it was an even more brutal end to the bout – and Joyce’s dreams of ever fulfilling his early potential to be a heavyweight world champion – when gun-loving Zhang destroyed his chin with a surprise right hook.

It was a massive relief to the packed Wembley arena supporting the Putney man as every dig Zhang threw five months earlier landed and damaged our man’s eye.
The second round livened up as soon as Zhang landed a crisp one-two and his few Chinese fans started drowning out the Brits.

Joe Joyce has taken an unusual measure to ensure a victory, resorting to the use of an electric skateboard.
He lost to Zhang back in April in what was the 38-year-old’s first professional loss, but he has found a new way to clear his head after the heartbreak of losing his unbeaten record.
Instead of going for a stroll or zoning out to some music, he has instead been heading out on his one-wheel skateboard.
Speaking to the Daily Star about what’s helped him move past the defeat, he said: “I got out in nature on my one wheel skateboard thing, that helped me.
“Going to see family and friends. Reviewing the footage as well and seeing where I went wrong. It wasn’t that I was thinking, it was a distraction and something to feel good about and enjoy.
“I have hobbies away from boxing, I swim, dive, cycle and the one wheel is my new thing. It helps me take my mind off it and enjoy life. It means it’s not boxing, boxing, boxing.”

    London calling
Yarde has called out Joshua Buatsi!
Buatsi first faces Dan Azeez on October 21 but Yarde says if he wants that is the fight he wants next.
He even went as far to say a verbal agreement has been struck between the pair to box in 2024.

    Yarde wins KO R2
Silva gets slashed about the stomach and bounced off the ropes but he is brave.
Yarde plays with his food and lets the underdog recover.
Then he piles and batters Silva into submission in his own corner.
    Yarde vs Silva R1
Yarde’s heavy hands fly back into action and Silva feels the wrath of his golden gloves.
The Portuguese is hurt a couple of times, to skull and torso, but doesn’t drop.
Yarde is coasting and will win the second he steps on the gas.
    Yarde vs Silva
Eight months ago Yarde suffered a punishing loss to light-heavyweight monster Artur Beterbiev.
This is his comeback and it is a gimme against Jorge Silva, he will win in style and probably early.
But he earned an easy one after giving his all against the terrifying hairy Russian and going out on his shield.
    Itauma wins TKO R1
An uppecut drops the poor Belgian, he beats the count and winks at his corner!
    Bad move.
Itauma ups the ante and batters him until the towel flies in to save him.
    Itauma vs Boucetta R1
Eighteen-year-old southpaw heavyweight sensation Moses Itauma has gone the distance in his last two bouts.
The 4-0 powerhouse has suffered hand injuries and needed time to heal.
So he could be especially harsh on Belgian Amine Boucetta right now.
    O’Leary wins decision
The three ringside judges call the engaging 140lbs clash 100-90, 99-92 and 99-92.
A fair call but probably a closer fight.
Gardner is a problem who can come again.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R10
The classy super-lights touch gloves before battering each other for one more session.
Blood is smeared across Gardner’s face and O’Leary has bruises all over his chiselled good looks.
Gardner lands his best shot of the fight but O’Leary shrugs it off.
The bell ends a cracker fight that was slipping under the radar after three rounds but then exploded into a thriller.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R9
Gardner is now bleeding from his nose following lefts and rights.
But he is going out on his shield, as we edge toward an O’Leary decision.
The bell ends another slugfest with Gardner left with three minutes to pull off a stoppage comeback upset.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R8
Kane Gardner has a head of steel and a heart full of pride, he’s taken a bit of a pasting but refused to buckle.
O’Leary’s biggest fear is breaking his hands on Gardner who started slowly but grew into the battle.
A right hand on Gardner’s head ends the round.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R7
Gardner looks vulnerable now, O’Leary’s blows are not landing flush but he is barrelling into the ropes.
O’Leary’s head movement is mustard, he slips shots at the last second with ease.
Another round in the O’Leary vault.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R6
O’Leary’s team wipe away the blood and stem the flow, for now.
Gardner is now on the front foot after a timid start.
Gardner is suddenly hurt, a twister leg or stunning shot have robbed him of his balance.
O’Leary chases him around the ring until he recovers, it must have been a slip or stumble.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R5
Gardner grins again when O’Leary whips a right hook into his guard.
Jabs are traded and then the Dubliner unloads a couple of combinations.
O’Leary suffers a cut to the corner of his left eye, from a clash of heads.
    Now underdog Gardner smells blood.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R4
Gardner grins off an O’Leary attack but they must be taking a toll on the Manchester man.
A left hook seems to buzz Gardner, O’Leary’s loud Irish fans get excited.
But the brave challenger makes it to another round.
    O’Leary vs Gardner R3
Gardner’s back is already red raw after so much time getting pushed back onto the ropes.
O’Leary is prodding and probing and softening up his prey.
Gardner is a moving and hard-to-hit target but O’Leary is racing away on the cards.

A right hook did further damage to Joyce’s plans and confidence as a dark feeling of deja vu sank in.
The only real shock came from the shot that ended the fight in such sensational fashion.
The rifle-like lefts that ruined Joyce’s eye and cracked his septum five months ago were tucked away in the Zhang family gun cabinet.

And instead a right hook lashed around Joyce’s guard and folded him into the canvas.
He bravely, almost super-humanly, tried to beat the count.
But expert referee Steve Gray rightly waved it off before he could take any more beatings from his Beijing boogieman.
Joyce might decide to rebuild his career with a rematch with fellow Londoner Daniel Dubois, who he beat in 2020 in a brilliant bout.
Or he could retire from the harsh bleeding business that robbed him of Olympic gold in 2016 and return to his first love.
Joyce is a fine art graduate and talented painter but it feels like a world title masterpiece may now always evade him.
A return to the easel might be a better way for the polite powerhouse to make a living after such a painful year.

    Next up
Idris Virgo has his sights on Floyd Mayweather or Carl Froch next.
Those are some odd bouts to be looking for, you would think.
Anyway, the former Love Island star was extremely impressive tonight.
    End of the road
Aaron Chalmers has his eyes on boxing retirement after that latest loss.
He just said: “I’ve got about a year left. Maybe 12-18 months but we’ll run it back. I’ll retire on Misfits.”
    Virgo’s the winner
Idris Virgo survives a rocky start and then completely overpowers Aaron Chalmers.
Aaron’s corner threw in the towel in the third round after he hit the deck again.
Chalmers just about stumbled to his fight with the count at nine – but the corner saved him.
    It’s over!
Idris Virgo wins in three rounds!
    Man down
Chalmers is down in the second round to a huge body shot.
Virgo has turned the tables in style in this round.
Chalmers spends the last 30 seconds of round two just covering up on the ropes and he survives.
    All Chalmers
A huge round for Aaron Chalmers to start the bout.
Idris Virgo is forced just to hold on for large parts of the opening round.
Chalmers’ power really hitting home there and almost forcing a very early upset.
    Seconds out!
    Round one.
Underway in the main event in Newcastle.
    The main event
Idris Virgo is in the ring as well now for the main event of the evening.
What a card it’s been and hopefully it has a strong finish.
    Anyway
After all that excitement, we’re ready for the main event.
Aaron Chalmers is on his way to the ring.
    Signed, sealed, delivered
Salt Papi and Slim sign their contracts in the ring with Mams Taylor present.
They will fight on October 14 on the Prime card.
That bill is looking incredible now.
    Is it happening?
Slim has come down the ramp to Eminem music – he and Salt Papi are squaring off.
I think we have another bout on October 14 just announced.
    Wow!
    Special guest
KSI has brought Salt Papi out into the ring.
A trimmed down Salt Papi. He looks incredible and has lost so much weight.
Now he’s calling out Slim on the Prime card.
    The main man
KSI is in the ring talking about October 14’s card…
“The undercard is crazy, we just keep going. And October 14 you’re going to see KSI the nightmare destroy and annihilate the b*****d child Tommy Fury.”
    KO night
That was the fourth knockout of the night on this card.
Misfits 009 flew a under the radar with all eyes on next month’s Prime card in Manchester.
But this Newcastle fight night has certainly delivered action.
    It’s over!
Wow! This fight is done inside one round.
Faze Temper had Ginty on the deck three times in the opening round and the referee stepped in.
What a performance and yes, another knockout on tonight’s card.
We didn’t see that one coming.
    Here we go
Faze Temper and Ginty are in the ring and ready for this four-round bout.
    Final countdown
Just two fights to go tonight in Newcastle.
Idris Virgo and Aaron Chalmers are making their final preparations backstage for the main event.
Faze Temper and Ginty will be on their way to the ring very shortly.
Here’s what’s gone down so far tonight:

Ashley Rak-Su beat Halal Ham by unanimous decision
Gabriel Silva beat Ben Davis by KO
Armz Korleone beat Master Oogway by TKO
OJ Rose beat Callum Izzard by TKO
AJ Bunker beat Little Bellsy by unanimous decision
Small Spartan Jay beat Pully Arif by split decision
Carla Jade beat Tash Weekender by unanimous decision

    No shocks here
All judges score that 30-27 to our winner… Ashley Rak-Su.
    Dominant, commanding, convincing.
    Punishment!
Somehow Halal Ham survived the absolute onslaught from Rak-Su and made it to the final bell.
Rak-Su looked like he wasn’t concerned about trying to get the knockout until he started teeing off in the final 10 seconds.
The fighters hug it out – and this one should be a pretty simple decision win for Rak-Su.
    Huge hits
How did Halal Ham survive that?
A rampant opening round from Ashley Rak-Su and somehow Ham was still standing after it.
Surely not another KO on this card? It’s been action-packed so far in Newcastle.
    This is new
Ashley Rak-Su has stopped on stage to sing his own entrance music, it seems.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a boxer pick up a microphone on the way to the ring before.
Anyway, he’s on his way to the ring now to take on Halal Ham.
    Three to go
Next up we’ll have Ashley Rak-Su against Halal Ham as we count down to the Virgo-Chalmers main event.
Faze Temper vs Ginty is the other bout still to take place.
