I was a white collar pub brawler in Ipswich and worked in recruitment, now I’m on the Tyson Fury vs Ngannou undercard

FABIO WARDLEY cannot believe he’s gone from white collar brawls in Ipswich clubs to a mega-money Saudi Arabia showdown featuring Mike Tyson.Eight years ago the 27-year-old was working in a recruitment office and playing football at the weekends, before doing four unlicensed fights just for fun.

But on Saturday night he defends his British heavyweight title against David Adeleye, on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou in Riyadh, where Mike Tyson will be in the Cameroon MMA fighter’s corner.
Even for the bonkers world of boxing, it’s some turnaround for the Suffolk Puncher who, thanks to being mentored by Dillian Whyte, is not far off a world title shot.
“It’s a funny old world,” he grinned.
“It has been a wild ride and I’m really proud of it and happy to be able to ride it to the full extent.

“I started on small-hall shows selling tickets, little obscure shows in the middle of nowhere.
“I used to look at big shows and thing to myself ‘maybe I’ll have one big fight… I’ll have one big fight and end my career there’.
“I thought I might fight for the Southern Area or the English or maybe the British but it would be just one big fight, the last dance of my career.
“But now I’ve done it 10 times over. I just kept my head down and kept grinding and by the time I looked up I realised I’m in the thick of it.

“I always say I feel like I’ve gone from one side of the TV to the other.
“I’ve gone from being someone sat there watching it to the one in the main event. It’s a funny old world.”
It was only a couple of years ago that Wardley’s best boxing credentials were sparring sessions with Whyte and Oleksandr Usyk.
Now he is a 16-0 pro with the Lonsdale belt and – if he gets past Adeleye – will be near the front of the queue if a December undisputed decider between Fury and Usyk leads to the belts being fragmented afterwards.
The modest ace said: “The division will be wide open in a couple of years.
All the big names are at the back end of their careers.
“They all have maybe 1-2 years left, a few big fights each and then they will say ‘I’m good’.
“That leaves the door open for me and a few others in the division to move forward. Especially in British boxing, I’m at the forefront and I’m the next one.

“It’s a great position for me to be in. I can have a few more learning fights, tick off awesome milestones and by the time those doors open I’ll be fully fledged and ready to go.
“The big boys are still there doing their thing but I’m not that many steps behind.
    |It’s an interesting thought and a funny place to be – in four or five fights fighting for a world title. It’s quite a surreal moment to stop and have a look at.”
Another far-fetched pipe dream would have been taking big-time boxing to Ipswich Town’s Portman Road.
But now the Tractor Boys are ripping up the Championship, local legend Ed Sheeran is a superstar and Wardley is on the rise, it’s a tangible target.
Wardley said: “We were flirting with the idea of a stadium show before this but to do those things you have to have the right fight at the right time.
“You have to build yourself, the right profile and fan base over time so that people want to come out and support you. You have to do the right things on the way, and this is another one to tick off.

“Me and Ed are not best mates yet – hopefully this fight can bring us closer together!
“He’s at the games sometimes but we haven’t crossed paths yet. I’m a fan of some of his music for sure.”

Joshua, 34, recently went on a four-day darkness retreat in a bid to “build character”.
The £2,000 exercise saw the Brit cut himself off from the outside world – with “no phone. No TV. No radio. No audiobooks” and no human contact.
If AJ is feeling better mentally following the retreat, he is also in excellent physical shape.
Joshua posted a picture of himself looking chiselled in the gym last night alongside coach Derrick James.

Joshua has been linked with a mega-bout against fellow former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.
Appearing at the Formula 1 last weekend, AJ said: “The next window will be in March-April, so that’s probably when the undisputed fight will happen.
“What we are being told is they want to make it a mega card and they like the sound of Joshua v Wilder on the same night.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn blamed Wilder for a previous deal for the pair to fight falling through.
The Bronze Bomber subsequently said on Instagram: “Another thing I want to address is a fight that everyone is looking forward to and hopefully happens.
“I’m doing everything in my power to make it happen – I’m referring to the Anthony Joshua fight.
“So Anthony – you’re hearing it from my mouth – I’m here, I’m ready, I’m ready to go.
“I heard some things your promoter said that my last fight only lasted a short period of time and I ain’t fought in a year and he don’t know if I want to fight or not.
“I’m letting you know right now, right here, I’m ready to fight man.”
Joshua plans to return in December against an unnamed opponent, before potentially facing Wilder in the spring.

The British boxer has yet to taste defeat as a professional, with his record standing at 33-0-1.
That is despite his thrilling trilogy with Deontay Wilder and 2022 rematch with Dillian Whyte.
His second and third bout against Wilder and the Whyte rematch alone reportedly earned Fury him £70million.
Despite his net worth, though, Fury has revealed is always looking for a deal as he prepares to return to the ring on Saturday.

“Hughie goes on at me about it. I love the cheap Asda chocolate fingers instead of the Cadbury’s ones. I’ll have all the stuff like that, not the real cans of Coke. I like fake ones.
“I don’t know why because I can spend the money I’ve got really, its just me. It’s just the way I am. I’m always looking for a deal.
He continued: “I’d rather get five chocolate bars for £1.20 than a single one. Even though I’ll eat all five and I don’t want to because its what’s been bred in me. Once a poor man, always a poor man.
“You never leave it, ever. I love Asda because its always got good deals on. Shout out Asda. A can of Cokes might be £10.50 but then they’re on sale for four quid, but I’d never buy them if they were £10.50.” More

Fury, 35, has long axed Hearn and his Matchroom boxing for his talks about a Battle of Britain clash between him and AJ.
The Essex promoter, 44, has recently revealed he is certain a historic showdown between the British boxers is still on the cards.

Meanwhile, fellow Brit Joshua had his fight with Dillian Whyte cancelled due to the Body Snatcher’s failed drug test.
And ended up taking on Finnish boxer Robert Helenius.
However, Hearn remains certain the British duo will fight after Fury’s bout against Oleksandr Usyk on December 23rd and AJ’s fight with Deontay Wilder in the new year.
The Matchroom promoter even insisted Fury would make over £100million if both he and AJ win their upcoming bouts.
When asked if the money would change his mind, Fury questioned where Hearn was getting this huge lump of cash from.
He said: “I’m not sure who is going to give us the £100m each. Who is going to pay it?
“Eddie Hearn hasn’t got it. Eddie Hearn ain’t got it.

The Gypsy King poses as a titan of the game with his devastating power, defensive prowess and crafty footwork.
That of course is combined with the Mancunian’s brash character and non-stop banter which gets him under the skin of his boxing opponents.

According to Sport Bible, the MMA superstar is set to earn a staggering £6million for this bout.

The British superstar claimed his opponent will leave with an extra $10m (£8.1 m) in his bank account.
Fury’s earnings haven’t been confirmed yet but it is safe to imagine he will pocket even more from the oil rich nation.

But the two heavyweights had over $25m (£21m) in guaranteed earnings, as per the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
The fight has received criticism from some boxing fans because of the fact Ngannou is not a boxer and may not be able to offer competition to the undefeated Fury.
Plus, the venue has come under fire as Saudi Arabia’s royal family continue to be accused of sportswashing amid their dire human rights record. More
