Otto Wallin calls out Anthony Joshua if Usyk delays rematch… but fears giving Tyson Fury 47 stitches may scare him off

OTTO WALLIN is ready to step in and fight Anthony Joshua if Oleksandr Usyk is out of the equation. Usyk dethroned AJ of the WBA, IBF and WBO unified titles with a 12-round masterclass last September.

The pair are signed to an immediate rematch but the Ukrainian, 35, has bravely taken up arms to defend his nation in the war against Russia.
Joshua, 32, has respected Usyk’s situation which could see their rematch shelved.
And both he and promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed they will be open to an interim bout in the meantime if needed.
It leaves a thin list of potential southpaw substitutes, but Wallin’s promoter Dmitriy Salita has already put his name forward to Hearn.
And the Swede believes he resembles Usyk far more than lefties Charles Martin – who AJ has already beaten – and Luis Ortiz.
Wallin, 30, told SunSport: “I think if you look at us three, I’d be the best option.

“I had that really good fight with Fury, sent him to the hospital with 47 stitches and was probably Fury’s hardest fight so far.
“If you look at Usyk and you’re trying to find someone that’s similar to him, obviously I’m the best option.
“They know that I’m interested in the fight and I want the fight.”
Wallin went from unknown European contender to giving Fury the fright of his life in September 2019.
And had it been any other opponent in the opposite corner that night, the gruesome gash suffered in round three could have finished the fight.
Wallin was eventually beaten by Fury – though his stock skyrocketed as he emerged as a legitimate heavyweight contender overnight.
That performance has, however, marked him out as a risky opponent for high-profile fighters, Joshua included.
Wallin said: “The only issue with this fight is that I might be too much of a risk for them. I’d have a good chance of beating him.

“But people are more hesitant to take a fight against me.”
Wallin is not a complete stranger to AJ, with them fighting twice in the amateur ranks.
Joshua also recruited him as a southpaw sparring partner before he knocked out Martin, 35, in 2015, his crowning night.
It leaves AJ knowing first hand what Wallin will offer in the ring and for the paying fans.
Wallin said: “We had two fights in the amateurs which were wars, could have got either way, he won two decisions.
“But they were good fights and that would be a reason for him to look at it and say, ‘Hey, this would be a really good fight’.
“It would be entertaining, I’m a worthy opponent and a good fight for him.”

Ron Stander dead at 77: Tributes paid to heavyweight boxer – nicknamed ‘Bluffs Butcher’ – who fought Joe Frazier

FORMER heavyweight boxer Ron Stander – nicknamed ‘Bluffs Butcher’ – has died aged 77. Stander’s wife Toddy revealed her husband died on Tuesday from complications of diabetes at their home in Omaha.

The highlight of his boxing career was a 1972 world title fight against Joe Frazier, which he lost in four rounds.
Stander earned the nickname Bluffs Butcher due to his aggressive, and brawling boxing style.
But it was also a nod to his hometown of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The fighter retired in 1982 with a record of 38-21-3 and boxed over 13 years.
During that period, he shared the ring with the like of Earnie Shavers and Ken Norton.
But he is most well remembered for his defeat to heavyweight legend Frazier, who enjoyed an iconic rivalry with Muhammad Ali.

And Stander almost pulled off an almighty upset as he buckled Frazier’s knees in round one and almost looked like scoring a knockout.
But he would tire as the fight progressed and by the end of round four, Stander was bloodied from a nasty cut.
It left the referee with no choice but to stop the action with Frazier declared the winner.
After boxing, for 13 years Stander worked as a machine operator at Vickers Inc, an Omaha-based manufacturer of hydraulic equipment.
He earned $20 (£15) an hour and the money allowed him to pay off his house and cars.
Stander also owned a bar, drove a concrete truck and worked as a referee, in his years after fighting.
He remained a popular boxing figure and had several friends visit him while in hospice.
His wife told the Omaha World Herald: “I can’t begin to tell you how many boxers came to the house.
“They’d hold his hand and kiss him on the forehead and tell him they loved him: I love you, champ. You’re my hero.”

Boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko says he’s in the ‘biggest fight of my life’ as he wages war on Putin’s troops

BOXING star Wladimir Klitschko has said he’s in the “biggest fight” of his life as he battles against Vladimir Putin’s troops. The former heavyweight champ is out defending Ukraine alongside his brother Vitali, who is the mayor of the besieged capital, Kyiv.

Brave Wladimir has called for world leaders to “act now” as Putin’s bloody war rages on – with innocent civilians being killed as shells rain down.
“Boxing is sport – this is war, and our people are dying,” he told the Mirror.
“Innocent women, children and civilians will be subjected to bombs, missiles and horrifying reality of war. People say this is the biggest fight of my life, and I agree – it’s so sad to realise how terrifying the war is.”
Hero Wladimir has urged other countries to take more action against Putin as thousands of terrified Ukrainians continue to flee their homes.
“Our military personnel are defending the honour of an independent and free Ukraine,” he told the outlet.
“I want to thank the people of Great Britain for sharing our story with the world, but with each passing moment the situation becomes more serious and Ukrainians are dying.

“It’s important to act now in any way possible. Don’t wait for a few weeks, don’t delay because every single minute, every single hour of every day counts.”
But Wladimir praised other countries for isolating Russia from sporting competitions – describing such sanctions as “crucially important”.

“To isolate Russia from all sporting competition is not an act of aggression,” he added.
“We do this to stop the war, in the name of peace. I have nothing personal against the athletes, but I have a lot against the aggression of Russian leader Putin.”
It comes after the boxer took a step back from the front line to visit a maternity ward where 82 babies have been born since the invasion began.
He shared heartwarming footage from inside the Kyiv hospital of two of the tiny babies.
“Life goes on,” the 45-year-old says.
“Eighty-two kids were born just in this hospital since the beginning of the war.
“More Ukrainians are coming up and will arrive daily.”
In a tweet alongside the clip, he added: “There are very precious moments in life. Even in desperate, challenging times like these.”
Just days ago, Vitali, 50, told Sky News that he and Wladimir – who are reportedly on the Russian “kill list” of senior Ukrainians – had “killed some people, I guess six people last night”.
And the elder brother defiantly claimed they were “ready to die for their home” and showed no fear of Russian forces when talking to CNN.
He said: “We’re not interested in how strong the Russian army is, we’re ready to fight.

“And we’re ready to die for our home country and for our families because it’s our home.
“It’s our future and somebody wants to come to our home and steal our future from us.”
Meanwhile, Vitali was pictured kissing a bride for good luck after she and her Ukrainian soldier partner tied the knot on the front line in Kyiv.
It comes as US intelligence chiefs have warned Putin could unleash mini-nukes in a warning to Nato if his “clusterf**k” invasion continues.
CIA Director William Burns told US lawmakers the long-standing Russian leader has been “stewing in a combustible combination of grievance and ambition for many years”.
Speaking at a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Tuesday, the heads of the CIA, Defense Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency gave their grave assessment of Putin’s intentions.
The chiefs branded Putin an “angry” isolated leader craving global clout – and said he’s frustrated about how his Ukraine invasion hasn’t gone to plan.
Meanwhile, Russia’s stranded troops are facing freezing to death in their tanks as Putin’s military becomes bogged down in the mud and an unwinnable war in Ukraine, sources claim.
A 40-mile long convoy of tanks and armoured vehicles remains trapped outside Kyiv, more than a week after launching their assault on the Ukrainian capital.
As a sudden cold snap sends temperatures in Eastern Europe plunging to -10C overnight – or -20C including windchill – Russian troops are trapped in what one ex-soldier called “40-ton iron freezers”.
Icy conditions are also set to make life even harder for Putin’s invaders, who have been stuck around 20 miles from Kyiv for days amid mechanical problems, fuel supply issues, and solid Ukrainian resistance.
Aerial satellite images taken on Wednesday morning show the traffic jam of Russian military vehicle close to Antonov Airport, just a few miles northwest of the outskirts of Kyiv.
Just south of Antonov, in the besieged city of Irpin, a badly-damaged bridge can be seen, further slowing down the Russian advance.
Traffic can be seen queuing around the bridge, suggesting Russia’s military may be continuing to press on towards Kyiv after two weeks of slow progress.

The rivals settled their differences inside the ring last month following a 10-year war of words.
21,000 fans packed Manchester’s AO Arena as Brook KO’d Khan with a sixth-round stoppage.
But although the winner walked off with a £3million purse, defeated Khan bagged an incredible £5m.
And he has now spent some of that dosh on a luxury new motor.

Klitschko brothers demand Russian boxer Bivol is BANNED from fighting Canelo Alvarez after country’s invasion of Ukraine

But the Klitschkos feel the WBA must follow the precedent set by other sporting governing bodies by banning Bivol from fighting.
Russia were kicked out of the 2022 World Cup play-offs by Fifa and stripped of their Grand Prix by Formula One, with Russian F1 driver Nikita Mazepin also sacked by Haas.
Wladimir Klitschko is supportive of those measures as he feels sanctions must be imposed against Russia in every possible way.
Asked if Bivol should be allowed to fight Canelo, Wladimir told BBC 5 Live: “Absolutely not.
“Every sanction, and it’s nothing against the personality or athletes, it’s about the politics of Russia.
“Every Russian representative in this case needs to be sanctioned, because this way we show to Russia that the world is against this senseless war and that there’s no good in this war.”

And elder brother Vitali is in agreement, calling on the Russian population to put pressure on President Vladimir Putin.
He feels a ban from sports would signal to Russian citizens that the war is senseless.
Mayor of Kyiv Vitali said: “The Russian population have to put pressure on the government, on Putin, from inside the country and show that it’s actually a senseless war.
“People pay with their lives, already thousands from both sides have died. The question is: for what?
“For what [purpose] is the war? For our idea of being part of the European Union? For our idea of being part of the European family?
“We see our future as a democratic, modern country and that’s why we’re fighting for values, for principles, for our country.”
The former boxing world champions are physically fighting to defend their country, taking to the front line in Kyiv.
Russian airstrikes have edged ever closer to the capital, forcing thousands to flee the outskirt towns of Irpin and Bucha.
But Vitali and his brother have stayed with the mayor stating he is “willing to die” for his country. More

But the unbeaten boxer was cleared after investigations surrounding the accusations were closed without charges being filed.
And according to ESPN, report Davis, 27, and Romero, 26, have agreed to fight once more after the WBA ordered the bout.
Initially, the grudge match between the rivals was eyed for June 4 but has now been moved by a week.
Davis currently holds the WBA’s secondary ‘regular’ title which he will defend against former ‘interim’ holder Romero.
The challenger spoke out for the first time in January after being cleared of sexual assault.
Romero posted on Instagram: “After three and a half months of my name being slandered with false accusations, having to miss out on opportunities, cheated out of my dream, and out of a massive amount of wealth.

“The investigation into the allegations made against me has been formally closed.
“Charges were not filed because the allegations could not be substantiated because, as I always stated, I am innocent.
“I am now the symbol of freedom, purity, and love.”
Davis went on to instead face Issac Cruz, 23, and narrowly beat the Mexican replacement in a fight which was blasted by Romero.
He told FightHype: “Both of those motherf***ers were lucky I wasn’t in the ring that night. I could knock them both out at the same time.
“You know I truly believe this s***. I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t believe it. I thought it was a good fight. I thought Tank won. Everybody over here said Isaac Cruz won are just a biased dumbass.

Kamaru Usman says crossover bout with Canelo Alvarez would be ‘the biggest fight ever’ thanks to UFC boss Dana White

KAMARU USMAN claimed a crossover bout with Canelo Alvarez would be ‘the biggest fight ever’ thanks to UFC boss Dana White. Usman has long called out the Mexican boxing superstar, who is the current undisputed super-middleweight king.
Kamaru Usman said a bout with Canelo Alvarez would be ‘the biggest fight ever’ thanks to Dana White
But UFC fighters are prohibited from competing outside of the promotion unless given special exemption.
In 2017, Conor McGregor, 33, was allowed to do so to fight boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, 45, but lost in ten rounds.
Usman, the UFC’s No1 rated fighter, eyes a similar bout with Canelo and urged White to get on board.
He told BT Sport: “Well, those conversations are still to be had.
“But, you know like I’ve said, this fight will be the greatest and the biggest fight ever in the history of combat sports.
“And that’s because we’ve got to have the biggest and the baddest promoter ever in the history of combat sports, Dana White, behind us.”

Usman, 34, wants to face Canelo, 31, in September, on the weekend of landmark holiday Mexican Independence Day.
He said: “Mexican Independence Day, I think it’s only right for me and Canelo to give the world a show, give the world the entertainment they so desire.
“You know, I’ve said it before, it can’t be done until someone does do it. I respect him, he’s a great champion, he’s the pound-for-pound best.
“I have to show him that respect but he needs to show me that respect as well.”
Canelo has refused to rule out the crossover fight but claimed Usman is only after a ‘payday’.
He said on the MMA Hour: “Maybe. Why not? You never say no. My trainer told me about it and I said, ‘Well, if you say.’”
Canelo added: “It’s not really on my mind. I want a really good legacy for my career and we can talk about other things later.”

Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte WON’T be scored by British judges after Jack Catterall was robbed of win over Josh Taylor

FOREIGN judges have been brought in for Tyson Fury’s grudge match with Dillian Whyte following the farcical scoring Jack Catterall’s showdown with Josh Taylor.Chorley clubber Catterall was robbed of a hard-earned victory over the undisputed light-welterweight champ last month due to horrendous scoring from judges Ian John-Lewis and Victor Loughlin.

Queensberry Promotion’s bigwig Frank Warren was disgusted by the scoring of the fight, so much so he’s recruited ‘neutral judges’ for next month’s Battle of Britain between Fury and Whyte.
He told iFL TV: There will be neutral judges for this fight. It’s not an issue, it’s agreed. It’s done.
“Contrary to what my PR man, Eddie [Hearn], has been putting out there, it’s been done.”
The British Board of Boxing Control has vowed to launch an investigation into the scoring of Taylor’s controversial title defence.
But veteran promoter Warren, 70, wants incompetent judges to be banned for calling big fights.
He said: “You change it by making people accountable. You do what they do with football referees.

“And invariably, if they feel it’s appropriate, they downgrade them.
“You have to do something, you can’t just let them keep rolling over onto the next one.
“And just say, ‘We’re going to have an inquiry, we’re going to have a chat about it at the next board meeting.’
“Have a chat the next board meeting and say, All right, that was bad.’
“And they appoint someone again for a big fight. That can’t happen anymore. It’s got to stop.”
Gypsy King Fury welcomed the prospect of international judges calling the domestic dust-up, telling talkSPORT last week: “I’ve seen an article recently where Frank Warren said there would be no British judges for this fight and I reiterate that as well.
“Those words echo around my training camp. We don’t want British judges for this fight.

“We want proper, experienced, judges who will do the right thing.
“If Dillian Whyte beats me, give him the decision. Do not try and rob anybody of this fight, give the man the decision, give the man what he deserves.
“If I win, do the same for me. In boxing, these fighters don’t want any gifts, they don’t want robbery decisions.
“People want to win if they win, and lose if they lose. In the game, we’ve seen so many boxing decisions go the opposite way and I’m just thinking ‘what are they watching’.
“As for the fight that happened the other night, both fighters tried their best and done what they could do best.
“It’s not for me to say who won or lost, because I know both guys, but it was a good fight, I watched it and it was a great fight for the fans.
    “Both fighters did their best.”
