Bayern Munich shock signing Omar Richards, 23, owes career to single parent mum and had Fulham heartbreak before Reading

    FAIRYTALES do come true.
Last season, Omar Richards was grateful to have established himself as a first team regular at Reading.

Now, he’s the talk of the football world since securing a sensational move to Bayern Munich.
The 23-year-old left-back will link up with the Bundesliga champions this summer, after signing a pre-contract agreement on a four-year deal.
It’s the pinnacle, so far, of a remarkable journey for Richards, who has been capped once at England U21 level.
And it’s a path he’s managed to negotiate thanks to his mum, who made sure he followed his dreams.

    SOUTH LONDON-BORN
Richards was raised in Lewisham, South London by his single parent mother, along with two brothers.
He rarely saw his dad, in what were difficult circumstances. But football was his passion.
The youngster played Sunday League football, before training with Fulham and then Reading.
And it was his mother who made sure he never missed an opportunity to play the game.

“Growing up, my mum made a lot of things happen for me,” he said.

“With football, she’d be taking me up and down to training and to matches all over the country. I’m very fortunate for that.
“I grew up with my mum, single parent, I didn’t see too much of my dad. I’m fortunate for her making a lot of things work for me.
“I owe a lot of it to my mum.
“If it wasn’t for her taking me to all these training sessions from such a young age, I’m not sure I would have been so driven and stayed on with football, so a lot of it is down to her.
“Even now, she comes to the games when she can.”
    HEARTBREAK AT FULHAM
Richards, who started out as a left-winger, established himself in the Royals first team in 2019.
The same year he was called up to England’s U21 squad and made his debut against Slovenia in a 2-2 draw.
But before he became a pro, he played Sunday League football for his local side.
It was there that clubs started to take note of his ability.

“I’m not really sure how I got into football originally, but I started to play Sunday league with my local team,” he said.
“I didn’t really know if I was any good at it, but I just played for fun then they signed me up down there.
“I played there for a couple of years but then that team ended up folding, so I moved on to another local team where I went on to get scouted for Charlton, Chelsea and Fulham.”
After a successful trial with the Cottagers, he joined the West London side at 10.
However, he was left heartbroken six years later.
“I remember getting released by Fulham at 16, and I didn’t know where football was going for me at that time.”
    REDEMPTION AT READING
Luckily for Richards, the late Eamonn Dolan, Reading’s former academy manager, saw his potential and invited him to earn a scholarship.
“When I came over to Reading and got signed, that was a big moment in my career – just to keep going and keep sticking with my dream,” Richards said.
“Eamonn put belief in me, after getting released I lost quite a bit of confidence and he was able to restore that, and he helped me get where I am today.”

And it was an enforced switch ahead of a youth game by academy coach David Dodds that Richards discovered his skills would be best set as an attacking left-back.
“Before I was more of an attacking player, I used to be a number 10 or a winger – I liked the way David Silva used to play, I always looked at that,” Richards said.
“I was a first-year scholar and the scholars didn’t have a left-back, David Dodds put me there for one game and it kind of worked – so I’ve been there ever since!”

Bayern Munich urged to save Thiago from Liverpool nightmare by Matthaus as he claims ‘door isn’t completely closed’

THIAGO has been offered a potential way out from his underwhelming Liverpool stint – with Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus urging him to return to the German giants.
The midfielder, 29, has been a huge disappointment since his £20million move to Anfield in September, failing to provide the spark Jurgen Klopp’s reigning champions needed.

And despite an improved showing in Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League win over RB Leipzig, pundits are still pointing to the Spaniard as one of the reasons Liverpool’s title defence has fallen flat.
However, he still has an army of fans in Germany – and none more so than midfield legend Matthaus.
The World Cup winner told Sky Germany: “How about Bayern bring Thiago back to Munich? He is not getting on in Liverpool and in Munich he is missed by Hansi Flick and the fans.
“Anyone who says goodbye to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge so emotionally, the door is certainly never completely closed. ”

Thiago spent seven seasons in Bavaria – winning the Bundesliga in each of them and turning out 235 times for the club, where he is still remembered fondly.

He was singled out by then-Bayern boss Pep Guardiola as the one player he wanted to sign on joining the club back in 2013.
But fast forward to today and his much-vaunted Premier League move has gone awry.

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is one of Thiago’s biggest critics, pointing to him blunting the Liverpool midfield’s famed tenacity.
He said: “Thiago Alcantara, for me, shows a problem for a manager.
“Liverpool were very hungry and aggressive in midfield, when you’re a manager you think you want to make the team better and you take a technical player.
“When you take a technical player, you lose the aggression in midfield and you destroy a little bit the strength in midfield that Liverpool had before.

“They have certainly less capacity today to win the ball back and they suffer a little bit more. Sometimes when you want to improve the team, you take something away from it.”
And former Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann added to the chorus questioning Klopp’s move to bring Thiago in.
He told talkSPORT last month: “He slows things down and doesn’t really play the way Liverpool play.
“Liverpool in the past have had hard-working midfielders, they were not as skilful as Thiago, but they have the ball to Mane and Salah early.
“If you get the ball early on the wing, and these guys can run at players they are very hard to stop.”

Chelsea want to ‘hijack Real Madrid’s move for David Alaba’ as Tuchel seeks to bolster Blues defence with contract rebel

THOMAS TUCHEL is reportedly ready to make a counter-offer to hijack Real Madrid’s bid for David Alaba.
Bayern Munich are set to wave goodbye to the long-serving Austrian defender when his contract expires in the summer.

Chelsea are one of several teams said to be interested in the 28-year-old, along with Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester United.
According to The Guardian, the Blues want to make a last-ditch attempt to gazump the LaLiga giants.
New boss Tuchel is reportedly looking to improve his defence despite keeping clean sheets in each of his first three games in charge.
The German has opted for experience so far with Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta returned to the team alongside Thiago Silva.

A versatile defender who started out as a midfielder, Alaba would fit into a number of positions in Tuchel’s 3-4-1-2.
But Spanish media believe a free transfer to Real Madrid is done and dusted.
A four-year deal worth £185,000-a-week has already been agreed, according to Marca.
Inter Milan full-back Achraf Hakimi has been linked to Chelsea amid the Italian club’s financial crisis.

Dayot Upamecano is another reported target with the RB Leipzig star’s £38million release clause activating in the summer.
The Blues downed London rivals Spurs 1-0 at Tottenham Stadium on Thursday night.
Tuchel said afterwards: “In general I am very pleased with the result, it is a deserved win.
“We were very good in the first half, very dominant and strong with the ball, good counter-pressing and we did not allow counter-attacks against one of the most dangerous sides.
“We lacked a little bit of precision in the box and composure to make it 2-0 and to score more goals and decide the match, so the second half was a bit hard.
“We had some easy ball loses, and we lost a little bit of ball possession and confidence, but we never lost the structure to defend, we never lost the intensity to push up high, and the courage to defend up high and up front, so I am very pleased.
“It is normal if you play a dominant game like this and you don’t score the second goal, it can happen that some minutes arrive when you have to suffer.
“But we were absolutely ready for that both mentally and physical, and I am super happy with the effort. We defended excellently.”

Man Utd can sign Douglas Costa thanks to Fifa transfer loophole as Juve want to cut short Bayern loan and move him on

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly been given the green light to sign Douglas Costa thanks to a Fifa transfer loophole.
The Brazilian winger, 30, is on loan at Bayern Munich from Juventus after moving to the Bundesliga having featured in two Serie A games for the Old Lady at the start of the season.

And ordinarily players are not allowed to play for three sides in a single season.
But Gazzetta dello Sport reports Fifa will allow stars to don three different shirts in one campaign given the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic.
And the Italian outlet suggests Bayern are happy to let Juve recall the forward after he failed to even make Hansi Flick’s bench for Sunday’s 2-1 win over Freiburg.
Wonderkid Jumal Musiala, 17, has had more game time than Costa with the wideman restricted to just 281 minutes in the Bundesliga and seemingly surplus to requirements at the Allianz Arena.

The report states Bayern will not extend Costa’s stay beyond this season and he could even be brought back early by the Bianconeri, who are keen to offload him.
United and Wolves are two clubs that could offer Costa a Premier League home.
But one potential stumbling block is his salary with the player taking home well over £100,000 a week.
Clubs may find it tough to find the funds to match even half his annual wages during the coronavirus crisis.

When asked about Costa’s omission from the bench despite nine spots being available in Germany, Bayern boss Flick said: “We have many healthy and high-level players.
“We had to make choices, it’s good that this is the case.”
Portuguese-speaking Costa could join Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as a replacement for Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, who swapped Molineux for Anfield in the summer for £45million.

Bayern eye Real Madrid defender Eder Militao as transfer replacement for David Alaba but face competition from England

BAYERN MUNICH are considering a move for Real Madrid defender Eder Militao, according to reports.
The Bundesliga champions are looking to replace David Alaba, who is reportedly on the verge of a move to Real Madrid.

Eder Militao, 22, has struggled to hold down a place at Real Madrid since joining from Porto in 2019

Alaba is out of contract at Bayern this summer, with Liverpool and Juventus also rumoured to be interested.
It is believed he will not sign a new deal with the reigning European champions.
Bayern are not the only club to have made an enquiry about Militao, with Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham all interested, according to Goal.
The defender is also believed to be on Liverpool’s radar, although it is unlikely they will be signing a defender in January due to the pandemic.

FANCY A PUNT? TODAY’S BEST ODDS BOOSTS FROM THE UK’S LEADING BOOKIES

Ramos is one of Real Madrid’s top earners but is demanding more to stay on for a further two years, claim reports
The 22-year-old joined Real at the beginning of last season but has made just 23 appearances in all competitions.
He was overlooked for their recent Super Cup loss to Athletic Bilbao, with Nacho replacing the injured Raphael Varane.
Militao was part of the Brazil squad that won the Copa America in 2019 and has previously played for Sao Paulo and Porto.

The defender remains in Brazil boss Tite’s plans but was left out of the squad for the latest round of World Cup qualifiers.
He does want to remain at Real and fight for his place, although he may change his mind if he is being left out of the Brazil squad.
If he does leave, Real will want to recoup the majority of the €50 million they paid for the player in 2019.

Everton close in on loan transfer for Bayern Munich strike sensation Joshua Zirkzee, 19, and eye permanent deal

A hamstring injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin may leave the Toffees short in the coming weeks.

Carlo Ancelotti played without a recognised striker in the midweek win at Wolves.
Cenk Tosun was on the bench after scoring past Rotherham in the FA Cup, a game which saw young attacker Ellis Simms named among the substitutes.
And reinforcements could be on the way with 19-year-old forward Zirkzee named as a target.
According to talkSPORT, Everton are close to securing a loan deal for the Bayern youngster.

The move would also be with a view to a permanent stay, it is claimed.
Zirkzee joined the German giants from Feyenoord in 2017 and impressed last season with four Bundesliga goals.
But he is yet to hit the back of the net in six outings this term.
Earlier this month, Zirkzee dropped down to the German third division for a runout with Bayern’s reserves against 1860 Munich – but was sent off after 27 minutes.

Bayern Munich to hand 17-year-old England sensation Jamal Musiala new three-year contract extension

BAYERN MUNICH are close to tying teenage sensation Jamal Musiala to a new contract, according to reports in Germany.
Liverpool have been linked with the attacking midfielder, who is enjoying a stunning breakout season in Bavaria.

According to Sky Germany, talks are progressing well on extending Musiala’s contract from 2022 to 2025.
The bulk of negotiations are said to have been completed with only a few minor details left to thrash out.
And Bayern hope to see the youngster put pen to paper on his 18th birthday, at the end of February.
Signing up Musiala for another three years would be the European champions’ latest boost in building a side that can dominate for years to come.

As the Bundesliga winners in each of the last eight years, they beat Paris Saint-Germain in June to claim their first Champions League since 2013.
Musiala, 17, made his debut last campaign and has made a considerable mark in 2020-21.

Born in Stuttgart, Musiala moved with his German mother and Brit-Nigerian father to England at the age of seven.
He spent time in Chelsea’s academy before returning to the country of his birth with Bayern in 2019.
England have moved quickly to include the talent in the Three Lions setup.
Gareth Southgate is reportedly eyeing Musiala for a speedy call-up to the senior side, following in the footsteps of fellow Bundesliga prospect Jude Bellingham.
In November, he made his debut for England Under-21s and scored in a 5-0 win over Albania.

Chelsea and Man Utd transfer blow as Real Madrid ‘win race’ to sign Alaba with Bayern star available for free in summer

REAL MADRID have beaten off their competition to sign David Alaba because Barcelona cannot afford him, reports say.
The Bayern Munich defender is available on a free transfer this summer, sparking interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Barca.

LaLiga champions Madrid have won the race to sign him, according to Marca,
It is understood the Austrian’s agent offered his services to several top clubs.
Barcelona were keen on the 28-year-old but have reportedly pulled out the race because they cannot afford his wages.
Alaba is after a four-year deal worth around £9million-per-year and the Catalans realised they cannot afford that as a result of the financial implications of coronavirus.

Barca’s income is said to have dropped by £231m in 2020 which will see them pursue Manchester City’s Eric Garcia instead.
Alaba will leave Bayern Munich in the summer after he refused to extend his contract.
He has made 19 appearances so far this season, but mostly at centre-back.
It comes as he lost his traditional left-back role to rising star Alphonso Davies, 20.

But Alaba is equally capable playing centrally, in midfield or defence.
The defender has scored 32 goals and provided 49 assists for Bayern since being promoted to the first-team in 2010.
Chairman and chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted the club tried their best to extend Alaba’s stay.
Speaking in December, he said: “Bayern did everything we could to try and reach an agreement.
“We had a lot of conversations, but we wanted answers from him by the end of October.
“This didn’t happen and I don’t know if we’ll return to the negotiations.
“What I want to be clear about is that our offer showed exactly how much we value him.
“But he didn’t accept it. He’s free to speak to whoever he wants from January 1.”
