How Tottenham’s Harry Kane buyback clause really works and why Bayern Munich star may be unlikely to trigger it

TOTTENHAM fans were left dreaming about Harry Kane’s return to the club last night – but the buyback clause has a lot more to it than meets the eye.The 30-year-old England captain, 30, left boyhood club Spurs for Bayern Munich in a £104m move last month.
Tottenham’s buyback clause for Harry Kane is more complicated than first thoughtCredit: EPA
That brought an end to an incredible stint in North London that saw him net 280 goals to become the club’s record goalscorer.
Two years after failing to push through a switch to Manchester City, Kane finally secured his exit after chairman Daniel Levy’s hand was forced.
The striker had entered the final 12 months of his contract, and facing the prospect of losing their talisman for nothing in June 2024, they decided to cash in.
However, Levy revealed last night at a fans’ forum that Tottenham have a buyback clause to re-sign Kane from Bayern.

The star, who penned a four-year deal with Bayern until 2027, has scored four goals in five games under ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel so far in Germany.
But Levy’s claims whetted the appetite for a sensational comeback for the hotshot.
However, now the Daily Mail has revealed that the buyback clause is not a straight-forward one.
And they also state that there are doubts over whether he would want to while Levy is still at the club.

Their report states that “multiple sources have indicated that while there is a mechanism that could open the door to Spurs re-signing Kane, it is believed the facility is not a simple buyback clause”.
They state that they have been informed that the clause only provides Spurs with the first option on Kane should he return to England.
But it is not believed to include a fixed price – meaning they would need to negotiate a fee with Bayern.
They also stated that neither Tottenham nor Kane’s representatives would confirm the specifics of the clause when asked.
Tensions are also believed to have mounted between Levy and Kane during the player’s final days at the club.
The Spurs chief was desperate to avoid losing Kane for nothing and pushed for him to pen a new deal to keep his value up – something the forward showed “no inclination” of doing.
Levy is then reportedly said to have become “increasingly difficult in his approach to sanctioning” his departure and is said to have “pushed back on parts of the deal that Kane and the Bundesliga club believed were agreed”.
This then reportedly “led to the striker having to miss his originally scheduled flight to Germany” and caused “a delay in the deal being finalised”.
Additionally, Kane “was blocked from re-entering Spurs’ Enfield HQ in the hours leading up to his departure”. More

Man Utd fans say ‘finally some good news’ as FOUR injured stars return to training ahead of Bayern Munich test

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have rejoiced at the news that FOUR stars have returned to training ahead of tomorrow’s game against Bayern Munich.Manager Erik Ten Hag had preached patience to fans wanting the injured stars to return for the Bayern Munich game, saying they were more likely to make the squad for next week’s trip to Burnley.

Raphael Varane also took part in the sessionCredit: PA
Amrabat returned but did not train with the main group
He said after Saturday’s defeat to Brighton: “Maybe, maybe one player, but I think Munich is a little bit too short. But I think, when we go to Burnley in the week after, I think players will return, yes.”
But United fans have in fact been handed a huge boost with Mason Mount, Raphael Varane, Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo all returning.
Varane missed the last two United matches with an unspecified muscle problem and Mount has missed the last three.
The pair trained alongside the main group and should be available for selection against Bayern Munich.

Sofyan Amrabat meanwhile is continuing to train away from the main group as he looks to regain fitness before making his United debut.
The midfielder was set to play a part for Morocco during the international break but picked up a minor tweak, meaning he’ll have to continue to wait to make his debut for United.
In another boost for United, Kobbie Mainoo has finally returned to training after picking up an injury against Real Madrid in pre-season.
The 18-year-old was one of United’s highlights of the pre-season but a tackle from Madrid winger Rodrygo ruled him out for months.

Like Amrabat, he did not take part in full training.
Anticipation for his return will be high as Ten Hag continues to tinker to try and find his strongest possible midfield.
United fans on Twitter were buzzing with the injury boost after a testing opening period of the season.
Reacting to the return of the four, one fan on Twitter said “Finally, some good news for United. Will the presence of Varane and Mount be sufficient to inspire a positive result for them at Bayern tho? I highly doubt it.”
Another wrote: “Great to see Mason Mount and Raphael Varane back in action for Manchester United! The team is looking stronger than ever!”
A third wrote: “Good news. They’ll be back to their winning form.”
United face Bayern Munich at The Allianz Arena tomorrow at 8pm in what will be Harry Kane’s Champions League debut for the Bundesliga side.
Earlier today, reports emerged that Kane had his heart set on a move to United, not Bayern, this summer but United opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund instead.

Harry Kane opens up on Man Utd transfer interest after claims he ‘had heart set on Old Trafford’ before joining Bayern

Kane, 30, had been Man United’s key transfer target at the beginning of the summer.
But as the reality of what Tottenham would demand for him despite his contract status became clear, the Red Devils decided to pivot to Rasmus Hojlund instead.
According to the Mail, Kane would have been willing to see out the final year of his Spurs contract before joining United on a free transfer, had they given him the requisite assurances.
However, Kane has now given his own view on the saga, explaining, via Fabrizio Romano: “Man United option for me last summer? Obviously there were talks with different clubs.

“But FC Bayern was a club I was really interested in. Once they came in there weren’t many other options. Manchester is a big club but I’m very happy here.”
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was reportedly under pressure from his boss Joe Lewis to cash in on Kane rather than lose him for nothing next year.
But Kane would have been willing to resist if a move to Old Trafford was in play.
When the Red Devils forked out £72million for Rasmus Hojlund, however, the England captain gave up on the switch and decided to prioritise Bayern Munich.

Kane has scored four goals in his first four matches in the German top flight.
The forward is set to meet English opposition tomorrow night, for the first time since leaving Spurs, when Bayern welcome Man United to Allianz Arena.
He is likely to see England team-mates Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire in Munich.

Man Utd handed unexpected boost as Thomas Tuchel WON’T be in Bayern Munich dugout – and they have rivals to thank

MANCHESTER UNITED can thanks neighbours City for a surprise boost for Wednesday’s Champions League clash at Bayern Munich.Home boss Thomas Tuchel will serve a one-match dugout ban for a red card against Pep Guardiola’s men in last year’s quarter-finals.

United might need any help they can get against Harry Kane and Co.
And that includes the absence of Tuchel’s animated antics pitch-side.
The ex-Chelsea chief lost his cool in the second leg against Man City at the Allianz Arena in April.
Tuchel was restrained by a Bayern assistant as he protested over a challenge by Aymeric Laporte on Kingsley Coman in the dying minutes.

But the German continued his complaints and referee Clement Turpin sent him to the stands.
Tuchel was no doubt frustrated as Bayern were being held at 1-1, which was the final score, meaning a 4-1 exit on aggregate.
City, of course, went on to win the Treble.
In contrast, Erik ten Hag’s United go to the same venue after three defeats in their opening five Premier League games.

Ex-Tottenham striker Kane seems certain to line up against the Red Devils after four goals in four unbeaten Bundesliga matches for Bayern.
That makes a hamstring injury for United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka that rules him out for a “few weeks” even more of a problem for Ten Hag.
But midfield loanee Sofyan Amrabat is eyeing his Red Devils debut. More

Shock Man Utd star wanted by Bayern Munich as Joao Palhinha transfer falls through

SCOTT McTOMINAY is Bayern Munich’s back-up plan if they fail to land Joao Palhinha in the January window.Fulham ace Palhinha signed a contract extension last week after his summer move to the German giants collapsed at the last minute.

The 28-year-old Portuguese passed a Bayern medical and was set to sign on deadline day.
But the West Londoners pulled the plug on the move because they could not secure a suitable replacement.
That was partly because Manchester United midfielder McTominay, who started in their 3-1 Old Trafford defeat to Brighton yesterday (above), was reluctant to move to Craven Cottage.
And now Bundesliga champions Bayern are considering cutting out the middle man and moving for the 26-year-old, who has 40 caps and six goals for Scotland.

However, their pursuit of Palhinha is not over.
The highly-rated 22-cap Portugal international’s new deal gave him a hefty pay rise and added another year to his contract — without inserting a release clause.
But in reality that makes little difference to the £50million-plus fee Marco Silva’s Cottagers would demand if Bayern or anyone else came calling in the New Year for their star man.

Bayern Munich ‘already planning for Thomas Tuchel’s exit with Real Madrid legend targeted to replace ex-Chelsea chief’

BAYERN MUNICH are reportedly targeting former Real Madrid and Liverpool star Xabi Alonso to replace manager Thomas Tuchel. The German giants are believed to be already planning for the former Chelsea boss’ exit from the club.

Tuchel was only appointed as Bayern Munich manager in March as he replaced Julian Nagelsmann.
The club manage to win the Bundesliga title, although they did need help from Borussia Dortmund who failed to win on the final day of the season.

Reports in Germany have claimed that Tuchel is “irritating” the club’s board with his negative comments about the club’s summer transfer business.
Further claims have now suggested that Bayern are already planning for Tuchel to leave the club, and his replacement has been identified.

It has been claimed Alonso is Bayern’s number one target to replace Tuchel.
The Spaniard has built a strong reputation as a manager since taking the helm at Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso is familiar with Bayern, having spent the last three years of his playing career at the club after leaving Real Madrid.
During his time at the Allianz Arena, the midfielder won three league titles, a DFB-Poka title and German Super Cup.

Since becoming manager of Leverkusen, he has overseen 21 wins from 41 games.
When Alonso was appointed, he managed to drag the club away from the relegation zone to a sixth-placed finish and a semi-final in the Europa League.
Alonso’s performance saw him linked with the vacant Tottenham job in the summer before Ange Postecoglou took the role.
He is also a potential target for Madrid once Carlo Ancelotti leaves the club at the end of the season.
He’s also been tipped to one day take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. More

Fulham ‘still plan to SELL Joao Palhinha with new contract not changing Bayern Munich transfer exit in January’

Palhinha, 28, was at Bayern and was even believed to have posed with a club shirt.
Fulham were unable to sign a replacement, with Manchester United’s Scott McTominay reportedly the favourite to arrive at Craven Cottage.
This meant that the club pulled the plug on Palhinha’s move to Bayern.
The midfielder has since signed a new deal with the Cottagers.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Fabrizio Romano, however, has claimed that Bayern still want to sign Palhinha and will move for him in January.
The transfer guru has also suggested that the midfielder’s new contract was “key” after the drama on deadline day.
He continues to suggest that Fulham are still planning on selling Palhinha for a “huge fee” next summer.
Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel believes that his squad is still “thin” despite the arrivals of high-profile stars such as Harry Kane, Kim Min-jae and Konrad Laimer.

Palhinha has been backed to still make the move to Bayern, with his agent brother Goncalo suggesting that the transfer has merely been  “postponed”.
He said: “They didn’t kill the dream, they just postponed it.
“Very proud of my brother and the player I represent.”
Tuchel has also been asked whether his side could return for Palhinha in the future.
He said: “I have no opinion on that. There’s no point in thinking about it now. He plays at Fulham and we play here without him.
“In winter we have to see. Things change sometimes, you can’t predict that.”
After signing his new contract, Palhinha said: “I feel happy. A lot of history happened these few weeks for me, you heard a lot of things about my future, but I’m just focused on my work at Fulham.
“I always have 100 per cent commitment with this club, I have all the respect for the club, for the fans. Since the first day, they supported me a lot, and me and my family felt this since the first moment that I arrived here.
“I have a lot of respect for everyone here in Fulham and I am ready to start again, to give all my best, and I want to achieve good things.” More
