Barcelona prepare shock Darwin Nunez transfer to replace Robert Lewandowski and think Liverpool will sell misfiring star

DARWIN NUNEZ is a shock target for Barcelona in a summer of big changes at the Nou Camp. And that could see the Liverpool striker replacing superstar Robert Lewandowski, who is set to become a big-name victim of a mass clear-out.Darwin Nunez has emerged as a shock target for BarcelonaHigh-earning Robert Lewandowski could be sold by the CatalansBarca’s salary cap has been slashed to just over £174million by LaLiga, meaning they will have to offload their highest earners to press on with a planned rebuild. With wages that will rocket to £27m next season, Lewandowski is the biggest earner of all — and almost certain to be sacrificed.Nunez is among the best paid at Liverpool but he is on about a quarter of the Polish forward’s money, which puts him well within Barcelona’s range. With a host of others set to leave at the end of the season, Nou Camp chiefs reckon they will be able to meet the asking price — if Liverpool are prepared to do business.Read more football newsThe Uruguay hitman is the Reds’ record buy, costing £85m from Benfica two years ago — and with a contract running to 2028, they will be loath to let him go.But Anfield top brass are aware of handing incoming boss Arne Slot a decent summer kitty.A bid to take Mo Salah to Saudi Arabia would provide that. However, if there is no offer from the Middle East, Liverpool are more likely to listen to Barca. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSNunez is perfectly happy at Anfield and not pressing for a move. But tellingly, South American sources insist the idea of playing for the Spanish giants does appeal to him.Barcelona tried to sign him from Almeria three years ago and thought they had a deal in the bag before Benfica nipped in to sign him.Mo Salah is the most selfish player I’ve ever witnessed says Graeme Souness after Liverpool star’s clash with KloppNunez was a sensation in Portugal and has become a huge hit with fans since moving to Merseyside in 2022.But despite scoring 23 goals this term, he has gone seven games without finding the net — and no player in Europe’s top five leagues has missed more big chances. He racked up an unwanted list of missed sitters against Luton, Manchester United and Crystal Palace.Nunez was dubbed the Uruguayan Andy Carroll, the forward who scored just 11 goals in two years for Liverpool, by cruel critics — a year after Kop legend Jamie Carragher compared him to Alan Shearer due to the ferocious way he strikes the ball. With everyone in a Reds shirt keen to show incoming boss Slot they should be part of his plans — home to Tottenham today is the latest chance — Nunez is under a brighter spotlight than most. While some in England question his resolve, 6,600 miles away in hometown Artigas those who know him best have no doubt who will have the last laugh.Nunez has won greater battles, both physical and mental.First with homesickness when he left San Miguel, the amateur club where he cut his teeth and moved 430 miles to join Penarol, Uruguay’s biggest club.Being away from parents Bibiano and Silvia was bad enough but when brother Junior — who was also at Penarol — quit to find work and support the family, suddenly he was alone.Nunez was so heartbroken he nearly packed it all in then — and came even closer when a cruciate knee injury sidelined him for a year.If it had not been for his elder sibling and support from his San Miguel pals, he may have done.So once he was convinced to stay, Nunez vowed nothing would stop him.Few know Nunez better than Daniel Suarez, the San Miguel president and close pal who lifted the lid on those dark early days.Suarez revealed: “Junior was playing at Penarol when Darwin arrived but then returned to Artigas because he was looking for a job.Klopp has botched his Liverpool exit… and it’s cost him his legacy, says Dave KiddBy Dave Kidd
NOW we know Jurgen Klopp’s final major trophy haul at Liverpool — one Champions League, one Premier League, one FA Cup, two League Cups and (if you must) a World Club Cup.
But where does his reign stand among the greatest of the Premier League era?
In black-and-white terms, Klopp is way behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola, the only two men to have won multiple Premier Leagues and a Champions League at the same club.
Those two sit alongside Brian Clough, Bob Paisley and Sir Matt Busby as the undoubted all-time managerial greats of the English game.
But Klopp ranks in the next tier down — with Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho (the Chelsea version), Bill Shankly and Don Revie.
These were all men with the strength of character to transform their clubs in their own image and enjoy success but who did not win as much as they might have done.
Had Klopp managed to keep his intentions under wraps and ended up with another title, perhaps even a treble or quadruple, he’d have edged himself up into that highest echelon with Ferguson, Guardiola, Clough, Paisley and Busby.
But deciding the timing and the manner of your exit is one of the toughest calls for any manager or sportsman.
    Klopp got it wrong.
Read Dave Kidd’s take on Klopp’s demise in full here.

“It was really hard as his brother was such a strong presence for him.“He was on his own in Montevideo and it was a difficult time, missing his parents. Then more bad luck struck when he had a cruciate knee injury. That’s when frustration really hit.“He wanted to go home and retire from football at 16. He was really down.“Junior was key in convincing him to fight back and even moved back to Montevideo to help him to adapt. And of course his parents visited regularly.READ MORE SUN STORIES“Everybody at the San Miguel club was also sending messages to lift Darwin’s morale.“Once he made the decision, he exploded as a player and after he made his Penarol debut at 17, the rest is history.”Arne Slot’s record is WORSE than Erik ten Hag’s
ARNE SLOT is set to be tasked with a near-impossible job – replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Should he swap the Eredivisie for the Premier League, Slot will follow in the footsteps of fellow follically-challenged Dutchman Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag left Ajax to become Manchester United manager in 2022.
But he has suffered a nightmare spell at Old Trafford and appears to be a dead-man walking despite making the FA Cup final.
With Slot seemingly destined for Anfield, fans won’t be able to help but compare his record in Holland with Ten Hag’s.
And Reds supporters won’t like what they see.

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey linked with shock transfer to European giants with midfielder yet to agree new deal

THOMAS PARTEY could call an end to his time in North London amid interest from a European giant. The Arsenal midfielder, 30, is reportedly a top target for Barcelona as he heads into the final year of his contract.Thomas Partey has been linked with a move to BarelonaCredit: GettySpanish journalist Adrian Sanchez has claimed that Partey is high up on the list of potential targets for the bigwigs at Barcelona this summer. And with the Ghanaian’s contract set to expire in 2025, he could prove to be an affordable option for the the cash-strapped Catalans. Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020, is yet to agree any kind of extension with the Gunners and looks likely to heading for the exit doors soon. While teammate Jorginho has been offered fresh terms with the club, leaving Partey to slip further down the pecking order.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLPartey has struggled for fitness in recent seasons and has been limited to just 11 league appearances as a result this term. His time on the pitch has also taken a hit after the £105m arrival of Declan Rice this summer.Mikel Arteta is considering his options regarding Partey’s future with hopes that he can make some of the £45m the club spent on him back if a deal is sanctioned.Barcelona aren’t the only club to be linked with a move for the star with Serie A outfit Juventus also rumoured to be interested. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSThere had also been links to Saudi Arabia in the January transfer window but a deal didn’t come to fruition.Arteta and Arsenal sporting director Edu may be hoping to raise more funds for their transfer kitty ahead of what could be an expensive summer. How Arteta’s tactical masterstroke turned Havertz into Arsenal’s most important playerReports have suggested the north Londoners are in search of a striker with names like Alexander Isak, Victor Gyokeres and Joshua Zirkzee touted. However Kai Havertz’s exceptional form since the turn of the year may mean the club shift their attention to other positions that need depth such as left-back and right-wing.Mikel Arteta’s striker shopping listBy Jordan Davies
ARSENAL are stepping up plans to sign a world-class striker in the summer after their Champions League heartbreak.
Mikel Arteta splashed out £204.5m last summer on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber.
But the Spanish manager accepts he needs a proven goalscorer to take the club to the next level.
And here are the players he is looking at to get the Gunners firing:
BENJAMIN SESKO (RB Leipzig, value £40m-£45m)
One for the future at 20 years old. Scored 16 goals for RB Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga last season and the Slovenian has carried on that good form in Germany with Leipzig this campaign.
VIKTOR GYOKERES (Sporting Lisbon, value £60m-£80m)
Been scouted several times this season. The Swedish striker, 25, is more of a traditional No 9 so may not suit Arsenal’s demand for flexibility but would bring a physicality that boss Mikel Arteta craves.
    ALEXANDER ISAK (Newcastle, value £75m-£85m)
Impressed in his first two seasons in English football. The Swede, 24, has the pace and finesse to match his finishing ability, and Eddie Howe’s Toon may need to sell to balance the books this summer.
    JOSHUA ZIRKZEE (Bologna, value £45m-£50m)
Dutch wonder  is attracting the attentions of clubs across Europe. At 6ft 4in the 22-year-old forward would have no trouble adapting to the Premier League and already has an eye for goal.
XAVI SIMONS (RB Leipzig, value £70m-£80m)
An incredible talent in the Bukayo Saka mould, currently on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. The future of the Dutch attacker, 20, depends on how much money his parent club want to make from him. More
