But in order to be eligible to play, they needed to make huge further reductions to the wage bill to operate within LaLiga regulations.
It was those rules – along with Spanish employment laws – that saw Lionel Messi forced out of the club.
But Pique, a product of the famous La Masia academy, has repaid his club with a selfless gesture to help Barca.
Boss Ronald Koeman paid tribute to the defender – and hopes other Barca legends will follow his lead to enable more signings to arrive at the Nou Camp, especially a forward.
Koeman said: “We all know the situation that the club finds itself in and it needs help in any way possible.
“Gerard, Sergio Roberto, [Jordi] Alba and Sergio Busquets have all been here for many years and they want to help and they have shown that.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET MAN CITY AT 7/1 OR TOTTENHAM AT 33/1
“This is their club and that shows in this gesture.
“It hurts all Barcelona supporters what Messi has done but we cannot live in the past.
“The squad is short of forward players and we have spoken about signing a striker.
“It would help us but let’s see if it can be possible.”
Ex-Barcelona forward Gary Lineker tweeted: “The great @3gerardpique is to take a substantial pay cut to ease @FCBarcelona’s registration issues.
“El Presidente del futuro. [The president of the future].”
However, more sacrifices to the budget need to be made before injured Sergio Aguero – or any other arrivals – can be added.
LaLiga set Barcelona an annual salary budget of £295million.
But they are currently operating at £340m so still need to cut around £45m, even with Messi and his mammoth wages gone.

The Argentine icon joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer this week on an eye-watering £1m per week.

Arsenal weighing up transfer for Barcelona outcast Neto after £35m Aaron Ramsdale move collapses

ARSENAL are weighing up a move for Barcelona keeper Neto after refusing to meet Sheffield United’s £35million asking price for Aaron Ramsdale. The Gunners’ offer of £20m plus add-ons for the England shot stopper was rejected after discussions took place on Wednesday, leading Arsenal to end their pursuit of the 23-year-old.

Arsenal will now reportedly turn their attention to Barca’s back-up keeper Neto, 32, who could be available on a cut-price transfer or loan deal as the Spanish giants seek to reduce their wage bill.
The Brazilian, who still has two years left on his current deal, has made just nine appearances in LaLiga for Barca since joining for an initial £22m from Valencia in 2019.
It is believed that Neto could be the perfect solution to Arsenal’s goalkeeper crisis, with the Gunners desperate to provide cover for Bernd Leno and competition for the number one spot.
There is also a good feeling at Arsenal that the deal can be completed swiftly as the player is represented by Kia Joorabchian, who previously orchestrated moves to north London for Cedric, Willian and David Luiz.
Neto was just one of a number of possible options that SunSport suggested Arsenal could turn to after failing to land Ramsdale, including PSG keeper Keylor Navas.
The Costa Rican is set to be ousted as number one following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer from AC Milan and would bring some much needed experience and pedigree to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET ARSENAL TO BEAT BRENTFORD AT 30/1
However, a deal for Neto looks far more likely and though Arsenal’s interest in Ramsdale appears to be shelved for now, they could come back in for him later on should Sheffield United’s position change.
Arsenal get their Premier League campaign started tonight with a clash with newly promoted Brentford.
Speaking ahead of the opener, Arteta revealed he was powerless to stop Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ cameras from filming behind the scenes.
He also admitted they have a tough start to the season with games against Chelsea and Manchester City early on.
But he urged fans to be “excited” about the season ahead.

Liverpool ‘set to win Renato Sanches transfer race ahead of Barcelona as Lille slap £40m price tag on midfielder’

LIVERPOOL look set to win the transfer race to sign Renato Sanches, according to reports. The midfielder, 23, is expected to leave Lille this summer after helping them win the Ligue 1 title last season.
Renato Sanches is expected to leave Lille this summer with Liverpool interestedCredit: AFP
According to Mundo Deportivo, the French side are demanding £40million for their Portuguese star.
Liverpool are keen to bring in an extra midfielder after the departure of Gini Wijnaldum on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain while Youri Tielemans looks set to stay at FA Cup winners Leicester.
But the Reds may try and lower the asking price to get a cheaper deal for the energetic midfield man.
Barcelona were also thought to be interested in Sanches, after missing out on Wijnaldum.
But their financial disarray means they are unable to register any new signings.
And that may well give Liverpool a free run to bring Sanches back to the Premier League.
After breaking through with Benfica, he won the league and cup double, Euro 2016 and Golden Boy award in a stunning 2016.
But after joining Bayern Munich, his career spiralled downwards with a flop loan spell at Swansea in 2017-18.
However, the star got it back on track when he transferred from Bayern to Lille two years ago and has been on an upward trajectory ever since.
Selling Sanches would mean losing two of their key title-winning central midfielders after Boubakary Soumare moved to Leicester.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has only brought in one new face in the summer window so far.
Ibrahima Konate signed from RB Leipzig in a £36m transfer to bolster the defence.

But with the club also linked with £38m-rated Belgian teenage winger Jeremy Doku, Klopp hinted there could be more arrivals before the August 31 deadline day.
Speaking after Sunday’s 1-1 pre-season draw with Athletic Bilbao, the German said: “I am very happy with the squad, but it doesn’t mean that we don’t look at the market.

The Argentine great, 34, conducted a press conference with his boyhood club on Sunday lunchtime.

They expect to land the Argentine on a two-year contract – with reported wages of £570,000 per week.
Marca add Messi and his entourage will fly to Paris early this week – and could even land in France today.

Despite agreeing a new contract at his boyhood club, LaLiga rules prevented the terms being signed.
It means the six-time Ballon d’Or winner is now a free agent and open to offers.
And according to Duncan Castles, United may put a contract on the table for Messi and his family to consider.
It is thought the Red Devils are crunching the numbers to work out if they can afford a deal.
The club have already spent £73million on Jadon Sancho and a further £34.2m on Raphael Varane this summer.
However, the Old Trafford side face plenty of strong competition for Messi’s signature.

Lionel Messi confirms Neymar and PSG stars jokingly begged him ‘come to Paris’ during Ibiza holiday

LIONEL MESSI confirmed Neymar and PSG stars jokingly told him ‘come to Paris’ as they holidayed in Ibiza. Messi fuelled speculation of a move to the French capital when he posed alongside Neymar, Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes and Marco Verratti.

And the Argentine legend admitted the PSG players did their best to convince him to join them in France.
Messi, 34, said: “Coincidence? Completely. I met them in Ibiza, we met them one day, got together and we’re friends.
“I was going to meet Paredes and Di Maria. Ney called me and said, ‘Do you want to see me?”
“We uploaded the photo in that moment because we were having a good time and there was a joke at the time, they kept telling me, ‘Come to Paris, come to Paris’.
“It was just a joke, that was all.”
Messi is international team-mates with Di Maria, 33, as well as Paredes, 27, and also spent four years with Neymar, 29, at Barcelona.
And the pair are close to linking up again with Messi closing in on a move to PSG after his sensational Nou Camp exit.
Messi broke down in tears as he bid farewell to his boyhood club of 20 years at a press conference.
And it was there he confirmed interest from PSG, but admitted his future is not yet finalised.

Messi said: “It is a possibility, but as of today there is nothing agreed with anyone.
“When the statement came out, I had many calls, various clubs were interested. But I have nothing closed yet. But we are talking.”
According to ESPN, Messi’s move to PSG is all-but agreed and subject to a medical ‘tonight or tomorrow’ before signing the deal.
It is believed French giants PSG have offered the Argentine legend a two-year deal, with the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
Barca had confirmed in a statement that ‘economic and structural obstacles’ had prevented a deal being ratified by LaLiga.
It meant they were unable to keep hold of their most prized possession, with PSG now ready to pounce.
Messi had pushed to leave only one year ago, but after a change of hierarchy at the club, he was convinced to stay.
