Messi, 34, is officially a free agent after his Nou Camp contract expired at the start of July.
However, the legendary forward is said to be eager to extend his stay with Barcelona.
And talks are ongoing over a new long-term deal.
However, the Catalans have been unable to meet Messi’s terms as they struggle to balance the books.
It’s reckoned a number of players must leave before Messi’s deal can be finalised.
But Catalan newspaper Sport claims Barca chiefs are now hoping to confirm the contract by the end of next week.
Should Messi officially return as a Barcelona player, it would mean he could face Ronaldo when Juventus play the Spaniards in a pre-season friendly on August 8.
The old rivals duelled for Ballons d’Or, LaLiga titles and Champions Leagues during Ronnie’s time at Real Madrid.
And fans will be salivating at the prospect of seeing them share the stage once again.
Ronaldo, 36, has entered the final year of his Juventus contract.

Messi ‘agrees to slash pay in HALF to finally sign Barcelona deal… but will still earn £1.2m-a-week’

LIONEL MESSI has reached an agreement in principle to extend his Barcelona contract with a 50 per cent pay cut, according to reports. The LaLiga giants were unable to get Messi, 34, to sign on the dotted line before his deal expired at the end of last month.

But reports across the Spanish media now indicate that a breakthrough has been reached.
The deal will see the Argentine icon slash his pay by half, to around £1.2million-a-week after the details of his previous contract were leaked earlier this year.
Barcelona will also hold a release clause of just over £300m on the player.
The contract is said to last for five years, despite talk of Messi wanting to see out his career with a stint in MLS.
Some outlets claim there is still a possibility for him to venture Stateside during the contract, which he see him operate as a Blaugrana ambassador.
According to Sport, the striker is willing to accept a pay cut due to the Catalan club’s financial trouble.
Barcelona have been told to severely reduce their wage bill to abide by LaLiga wage limit rules.
An agreement was, however, reportedly delayed as both parties were at pains to ensure the contract’s tax situation was in order.
The club’s and player’s lawyers are now set to draft the agreement and produce a document that Messi can give his final consent to.
An announcement is expected next week at the earliest with the star on holiday following the Copa America.

Talks have been ongoing for several weeks, led by club president Joan Laporta and Lionel’s father, Jorge.
Interest had arisen from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, as well as Inter Miami.
Earlier this week, it had been claimed that PSG were giving up on the deal after Messi privately confirmed his commitment to Barcelona.
Since making his first-team debut in 2004, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner has notched ten LaLiga titles, four Champions League triumphs, won the Copa del Rey seven times, and scored over 700 goals.

Lionel Messi facing 80 PER CENT pay cut as Barcelona wage limit is slashed – but he’d still be top Premier League earner

LIONEL MESSI is reportedly facing an 80 PER CENT wage cut to sign a new contract with Barcelona. The 34-year-old is currently a free agent, but the Spanish giants are desperate to keep the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

But with Barca, like most of Spanish fiootball, have seen finances obliterated by the coronavirus pandemic.
They are desperately trying to cut wages while flogging some of their out-of-favour players.
And according to The Athletic, this will severely impact on the terms the LaLiga giants are able to put to Messi.
The striker earns around £2.4MILLION a week, so an 80 per cent cut in that will see him pocket £480,000-a-week.
That would still see him earn comfortably more than the Premier League’s highest-paid player, Manchester City ace Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgian takes home £385,000 a week.
The next highest-paid player in the Prem is Manchester United’s sometime No1 goalkeeper David De Gea, who collects £370,000 a week.
Then it’s Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on £350,000 a week.

And the top five is rounded off by Chelsea’s German star Kai Havertz on £310,000 a week.
But there could well be a NEW entry in that last in the next few weeks.
Manchester United star Paul Pogba, 28, is going into the final 12 months of his contract and SunSport has exclusively revealed that the Red Devils are willing to offer him a staggering £400,000 a week over the next five years.
The Prem giants are desperate to keep midfielder Pogba and do not want him to go into the new season without him tied down.
Old Trafford chiefs are now set to put the bumper new terms on the table – a huge increase on his current £290,000-a-week salary.
His new pay packet would eclipse the £375k a week which United team-mate De Gea earns.

Negotiations continued while Messi helped Argentina win the Copa America but no breakthrough has been made yet.
Yet transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has insisted that the forward is staying following the news that PSG have given up on signing him on a free.
Barcelona’s boost comes just days after club president Joan Laporta claimed that the Catalan outfit are nearing a deal to renew Messi’s contract.

He told Mago Pop on Spanish TV, via Marca: “[Messi’s deal] is progressing adequately well.”
Messi meanwhile is currently on holiday after he won his first major international trophy lifting the Copa America.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner emotionally reunited with wife Antonela Roccuzzo following the 1-0 victory over Brazil at the Maracana.
Angel Di Maria was the matchwinner but Messi remained his country’s main man with four goals and five assists in seven games.
And Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni revealed that the 151-cap international had been suffering with an injury in the tournament.

He explained: “If you knew the way that he played in the Copa America you’d love him even more.
“You can never do without a player like him, even when he is not fully fit like in this game and the previous one.”
SunSport previously revealed that Inter Miami are confident of landing Messi in two years time following the end of his next extension.

But they will have to fork out a big transfer fee if they are to prize him away from the Serie A side.
According to La Gazetta dello Sport, Sampdoria have set Damsgaard’s price at £34million.
It comes after the Danes reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 before being eliminated by England.
And Damsgaard was a key figure in helping them make it to the last four.
The youngster netted the opener in his country’s must-win group game against Russia which they went on to win 4-1.
He then also scored a sensational free-kick in their semi-final clash with Gareth Southgate’s men, before eventually being knocked out after extra time.
Damsgaard was given his chance in Denmark’s starting XI in tragic circumstances after Christian Eriksen collapsed in their opening match against Finland.

The Inter Milan midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in Copenhagen but was stabilised and subsequently released from hospital.
And Damsgaard made Eriksen proud by performing superbly for the Danes, guiding them to their first semi-final in a major tournament since they won the Euros back in 1992.
Spurs are interested in bringing Damsgaard to the club as they look to add to their squad following the arrival of new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Liverpool are also hoping to add some fresh faces to their side after a disappointing defence of their Premier League title last season.
Meanwhile, European giants Barcelona and Juventus will be wanting to be more competitive in the Champions League in the 2021-22 campaign as neither made it past the last 16 in the previous season.

How Martin Braithwaite is Barcelona’s RICHEST player despite being 14th-best paid at club with Lionel Messi off books

DENMARK striker Martin Braithwaite is now the RICHEST player in Barcelona’s squad following Lionel Messi’s departure, according to reports. The 30-year-old has a property empire in the US, believed to be worth £181MILLION.

According to Forbes via Marca, Braithwaite’s company is worth $250m – around £181m.
The Barcelona star is believed to have invested around £617,000 into the business with his uncle, Philip Michael, in 2017.
NYCE Companies is now reportedly 25 times bigger than it was four years ago, with Braithwaite and Michael owning 1,500 apartments.
And the pair are said to have another 500 properties in development around Philadelphia and New Jersey.
Speaking to Danish website BT earlier this month, Michael said: “It started with our family having been in the real estate business for a long time.
“Here you will find that one of the ways you can build a fortune and secure your future financially is by investing in real estate. And that’s what I’ve been doing with my dad and Martin since I came over here.
“Martin’s role is very much about how we do in terms of strategy and vision in the long run.
“He is involved, but not so involved that it distracts him from football.”

Braithwaite is married to French journalist Anne-Laure Braithwaite after spending four years at Ligue 1 side Toulouse.
The couple have two kids and the Barcelona star is stepfather to another two from his wife’s previous relationship.
Braithwaite’s reported wealth makes him the richest player in Barca’s squad – despite earning the joint 14th-highest wage, said to be £85,000-a-week.
Messi does have more cash than the Denmark international – believed to be worth $400m (around £289m) – but is now a free agent after his contract expired.
The 34-year-old is yet to agree a new deal with the Spanish giants, who reportedly need to cut their costs to operate under a salary cap.

New Barcelona signing Memphis Depay is understood to have accepted a 30 per cent pay cut to appease the club’s worrying financial state.
Although Braithwaite’s bank balance is healthy, his club form is worrying.
The former Middlesbrough striker has scored just THREE goals in 40 LaLiga games since his controversial move in February 2020.
Barcelona were allowed to buy Braithwaite outside of the transfer window as an ’emergency signing’ – but his former side Leganes were not allowed to replace him and were subsequently relegated by just a point.
