Ben Hunt: Billionaire boys Stroll and Latifi’s woeful form may make it a miserable homecoming at Canada GP

FORMULA ONE heads off to Montreal this weekend — although don’t expect much for Canadians to cheer.Despite the country only having 15 F1 drivers throughout the sport’s history, they currently occupy ten per cent of the grid.

However, Lance Stroll of Aston Martin and Williams driver Nicholas Latifi are both enduring difficult seasons with some question marks over their futures.
Stroll has scored just a measly two points so far and Latifi is currently sat 21st in a championship that has 20 cars on the grid.
That’s because Nico Hulkenberg’s two races for Aston Martin when Sebastian Vettel was sidelined with Covid have him placed above Latifi on account of his better finishing positions.
It has been frustrating for Stroll, who strangely retired from the race in Baku due to “a vibration issue”.

‘told to bitch about back issues’ after Merc call for a rule change
The previous day it was an engine problem that caused him to hit the barriers twice in a matter of seconds during qualifying while team-mate Vettel qualified in ninth.
Latifi, too, has had his fair share of errors and crashes.
And he was also embarrassingly outperformed by Nyck de Vries when the Formula E world champion jumped in for one practice session in Barcelona to set a lap time quicker than the Canadian.
Ordinarily, you’d say these two drivers have run out of time to say they deserve their places in F1.
Stroll might have three podiums in his 108 starts, while Latifi has never come close in his 47 GPs.
If both teams have serious aspirations about improving, then perhaps they need to look elsewhere.
However, we would be forgetting the fact that these two aren’t your usual backmarkers who have rustled up a few quid to drive in F1.
These are the billionaire boys. Both their dads are said to be worth over £2.5BILLION each.
Lawrence Stroll made his money through buying fashion brands and is also the owner of Aston Martin.
That makes firing his son a rather awkward prospect when he has spent millions at the team — including a brand new factory at Silverstone — in the hope they can challenge for titles.
On the other hand, Latifi’s dad, Michael, is the owner, chairman and CEO of Canadian food company Sofina Foods Inc.
His money was a welcome boost to cash-strapped Williams under their previous structure when they were owned by the Williams family.
However, now under owners Dorilton Capital, if the rumours are to be believed, then son Nicholas could be replaced by Australian racer Oscar Piastri in the near future.
Piastri, 21, is an exciting prospect after winning the F2 title last year and would certainly be a good fit alongside Alex Albon.
But with doubts over Latifi’s future, and with Stroll on a roll of three races without scoring points, it could be a miserable weekend for the locals.

    KICK IN THE BOLUKS
THERE was a bust-up in Baku’s Formula 2 paddock which saw a driver fined €5,000 and his dad BANNED from the British Grand Prix.
Charouz Racing System’s Cem Bolukbasi, 24, was slapped with the  fine after a heated exchange with Israeli F2 ace Roy Nissany.
Nissany, 27, was blamed for punting Turkish driver Bolukbasi out of the race and has received a three-place grid penalty.
But the drama did not end there as Cem’s dad Yavuz Bolukbasi sought out Nissany after the race.
Nissany’s trainer, Francesco Martinez, also became involved and there was “some pushing and physical contact” — yet according to the FIA’s report “no punches were exchanged”.
Bolukbasi senior has had his credentials withdrawn for the next round in Silverstone, while his son has to pay the fine within 48 hours.
    LE MANS NERVES
TOYOTA’S Le Mans-winning star, rookie Ryo Hirakawa, said he “did not sleep for a week” before the weekend’s victory.
That hardly seems like ideal preparation for a 24-hour race.
    FREIGHT FEARS
THE key race this week is not the GP in Montreal — but whether the teams’ freight makes it there.
Air delays, plus a 5,565-mile trip from Baku, mean chiefs are sweating on logistics.
    CLOSING ING
TOM INGRAM, 28, won two out of three races at Oulton Park to close the gap on BTCC leader Josh Cook to 15 points.
It was his first win at the circuit. Stephen Jelley won race three. More

But, according to El Periodico, Vettel was robbed early on Monday morning – with the F1 ace then trying to catch the thieves on his scooter.
Vettel is said to have left his car window open outside his hotel, with the crooks taking advantage and pinching his bag.
The report claims the German had his documents and AirPods in the backpack.
However, Vettel was able to pinpoint his headphones with the help of his iPhone – tracking their position using GPS.

The Aston Martin star hopped on his electric scooter and navigated the tricky El Raval area of Barcelona to trace his belongings.
Unfortunately for Vettel, he reportedly found his Apple headphones abandoned in a shop, but there was no sign of his backpack or documentation.
It’s thought the robbers realised they might be traceable, so ditched them to throw Vettel – and police – off the scent.
Local news outlets claim cops have opened an investigation after Vettel reported the crime.

It’s believed, documentation aside, Vettel had no valuables in his rucksack.
It capped off an ultimately disappointing weekend for the German.
Vettel only managed to qualify 16th for Sunday’s race after struggling in Q1.
However, he clawed his way back up to 11th during an action-packed race, which saw Max Verstappen win following Charles Leclerc’s engine issue.

Aston unveiled their British Racing Green design for 2021 with a James Bond themed launch, featuring Daniel Craig and Gemma Arterton.
Vettel’s favourite Bond film is Dr. No and he decided to honour Swiss actress Ursula Andress, who played the first ‘Bond girl’ in the 1962 film.
Speaking ahead of the new season, the 33-year-old explained his love affair with the iconic series.
He said: “My favourite Bond film? Probably the first one that kicked it off. Obviously because of Honey Ryder in it!
“My favourite Bond actor is Sean Connery and to be fair, Pierce Brosnan, because that is my youth, be he had some good style.
“And the car? The DB5 is an iconic car, pretty cool and it is nice that it came back a few years ago.”

The ex-Ferrari star is a huge fan of the UK and lists his favourite TV shows as Little Britain and Monty Python while he’s also previously said The Beatles were his favourite band.
And when asked where he’d like to spend a month-long road trip, should the opportunity arise, he picked the UK.
He added: “If I had a month, I would tackle the UK. I have not seen that much yet.
“Obviously, with Silverstone I am an expert but other than that and the Midlands, I would like to explore the north of England and then Scotland.”
Ex-F1 driver and Sky Sports pundit, Johnny Herbert, says seeing the British car brand back in F1 is great news.
He said: “To have the addition of another manufacturer like Aston Martin to come back into F1 is brilliant.

“It’s great we have that lovely British brand back racing. If it all works out, we have the Aston Martin brand winning races and maybe a world championship, it would be great for the British car industry.
“I also hope we see the best of Vettel again. I don’t think the enjoyment factor and the motivation was there, especially at the end at Ferrari.
“I remember seeing him last year in Russia, and he was looking forward to going back to a British team.
“That goes back to his happy days at Red Bull, so that’s very important. If Aston Martin can give him the tools, I think we will see a resurgence of Vettel.”

Sebastian Vettel ditches famous Germany F1 helmet for pink BWT design to promote clean drinking water

SEBASTIAN VETTEL has insisted he is ‘proud to be German’ having dropped his country’s flag from his Formula One helmet.
The famous black, red and gold of the European nation is no longer present on the four-time world champion’s headgear as he turns his attention to environmental issues.

The Aston Martin star has switched to a pink design for sponsors BWTCredit: Splash News

A pink design created around the colours of Aston Martin sponsor BWT will be worn for the 2021 season.
The Austrian company have named Vettel, 33, a brand ambassador as part of their pursuit to promote greater water environmentalism.
Speaking ahead of pre-season testing on Friday, he explained: “The future is important and we must do our best to protect the planet for children and young people.
“We all share this responsibility and if we come together we can make a difference.

“As a Formula 1 driver, I think it’s right to speak up on this subject and have my voice heard. I am pleased to have found a partner in BWT that shares the same perspective and goals.
“By cutting down the amount of plastic waste, we can make the world a little better, sip by sip.”
BWT’s pink colour scheme covered the Racing Point livery last season, before its switch to Aston Martin and British racing green.
Vettel’s helmet retains elements of the Germany flag, specifically its tricolour outline that is now various shades of pink.

He told Sky Sports: “The helmet is still the same in terms of design.
“It is still the identification with the flag. I am proud to be German but I don’t need to wear the German flag all the time.
“I think the helmet looks good and suits the car. More important is the message behind it.”
The driver opened his team’s testing session in Bahrain on Friday, clocking 51 laps and coming seventh on the timesheet.

Sebastian Vettel slams F1 plans for new ‘sprint races’ this season as Aston Martin star says ‘it makes no sense’

PLANS to shake up Formula One qualifying with Saturday sprint races have been slammed by Sebastian Vettel.
The four-time world champion is preparing for his first season with Aston Martin, having unveiled their contender alongside Daniel Craig and Gemma Arterton on Wednesday.

Sebastian Vettel has criticised plans to experiment with qualifying by introducing sprint racesCredit: Splash News

Talks are underway to test the new sprint set-up, with Brazil, Monza and Canada eyed for trials this year.
Shorter races, which will start with a grid set in Friday practice, will decide the Sunday Grand Prix grid – and award a small number of points to the top finishers.
New F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali described the idea as necessary to prevent the sport from stagnating.
He said last month: “It’s important to think of new ideas to be more attractive or interesting, but no need to lose the traditional approach to racing.”

But Vettel, 33, added his voice to concerns over sprint races, which could be given the green light later this month.
The German stated: “I don’t know what the thinking is behind it.
“I don’t like it. Why would you have a pre-final to a final? What’s the point of that? I don’t understand it.
“Obviously if there is a race on Saturday, then I will have to take part because I still want to drive on Sunday, but from my point of view, it makes no sense.

“You have the Grand Prix and it has always been around 300km and the main challenge of the weekend.
“I think if you have to introduce something like this, then there is something else that you need to fix other than the format, or another race, or another two minutes, or a Q4 or Q5, or whatever it is.
“Maybe it’s shifting or taking the focus away from the real problem. It’s more of a patch rather than a fix.”
McLaren star Daniel Ricciardo said recently that he is open to the idea, particularly as a better shake-up concept than reverse grids.
He said: “At first, I was a little apprehensive. But I do feel better at the thought of that, certainly, than a reverse grid.
“So I think, ultimately, if the best guys and the best teams are still coming out on top, and it’s kind of not manipulated or artificial, so to speak, then I’m less scared of it.

“Competition is obviously what I love most, so I would love to do more races and less practice or whatever. So it kind of does go towards probably what I want.
“But I think the biggest thing is I want an F1 win to still feel as big as what it should be. I don’t ever want an F1 win to feel diluted, or just somewhat lower than what it should.
“So if they do bring in another race on the weekend, as long as it kind of carries the same value, then I guess I’m certainly more open-minded towards that.”
