Arsenal ‘Star Boy’ Bukayo Saka currently Dream Team’s second-most popular player

ONLY Erling Haaland (£8.5m) is more popular among Dream Team managers than Bukayo Saka (£6m) ahead of the new season. At the time of writing, Manchester City’s prolific poacher features in 85.6% of teams created despite being the most-expensive player in the game by a wide margin.
This was to be expected as the Norwegian goal machine plundered 431 points in 2022/23, the second-highest total in Dream Team history, to propel his side to a monumental treble.

Haaland is quite clearly in a bracket of his own so it’s notable that Arsenal’s No7 is next on the podium.
Saka currently appears in 36.6% of teams, ahead of Kevin De Bruyne (£7.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£6.5m) in the midfield popularity contest.
The England international’s cheaper price is a factor and it may be that gaffers are forgoing the Manchester pair in favour of Saka when selecting their premium midfielder – Haaland’s cost means compromises must be made elsewhere.
But of course the primary reason for Saka’s popularity is his considerable talent.
He registered 15 goals and eleven assists last season with all but one of those goal involvements coming in the Premier League.
The Emirates’ resident ‘Star Boy’ was a significant contributor to the Gunners’ unexpected title challenge and with some high-profile recruits through the door – Declan Rice (£3.5m), Kai Havertz (£3.5m), Jurrien Timber (£3.5m) – Mikel Arteta’s side are likely to be strong again this season.
    A popular choiceCredit: DREAM TEAM
It’s easy to forget that Saka is still just 21 years old, his prime may yet be a few years in the future – a scary prospect for the world’s left-backs.
While it’s true he set a high standard for himself in 2022/23, most observers would expect him to maintain that level or even improve.
Arsenal’s August fixtures are another factor in Saka’s popularity.
They get underway with a home fixture against Nottingham Forest, who had the worst away record in the Premier League last term – Steve Cooper’s side mustered just eight points on the road.
Arsenal then travel to Crystal Palace, who actually performed better away from Selhurst Park in 2022/23, before finishing the month with Fulham’s visit to north London.
Favourable fixtures are more difficult to predict at the start of the campaign but that’s a relatively friendly set on paper which looks ripe for some Saka returns.
    Strong options for AugustCredit: GETTY
What’s interesting is that Martin Odegaard (£5m) is a full million cheaper and the Norwegian playmaker was just five points adrift of his team-mate last season, so he’s evidently a strong option for August and beyond as well.
In fairness, Arsenal’s captain is currently the fourth-most popular asset in his position so it’s not like this alternative strategy is being overlooked by Dream Team bosses – many gaffers may even be doubling up on Gunners midfielders.
What’s clear at this stage is that some early-season Saka magic would make a sizeable portion of Dream Team gaffers very happy.
It’ll be interesting to see how his returns compare to the less popular duo of De Bruyne and Fernandes…

His £52million move to Al-Hilal this week has taken his accumulative fees to just over £126million.
That figure includes previous moves to Bordeaux, Barcelona and Zenit St. Petersburg.
However, Malcom could have lined up at the Emirates Stadium had his career gone differently.
The Gunners were strongly linked with a move for the forward in 2018, with fans devastated when he instead joined Barcelona.

After making contact with Bordeaux in January of that year, Arsenal later missed out on his signature.
Barcelona beat several clubs to the signing of Malcom, including Everton, but he scored just four goals in his only season in Spain.
Arsenal even came back in for the Brazilian after he joined Barca, attempting to sign him on loan.
Malcom went on to join Zenit from Barcelona and became a key man for the Russian side.

Chelsea leading Arsenal in race for £40m Ajax star Kudus but transfer could depend on Man Utd’s Hojlund move

CHELSEA are leading Arsenal in the race to sign £40million Ajax star Mohammed Kudus. However, any potential transfer could depend on Manchester United’s move for Rasmus Hojlund.

Kudus has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with both Brighton and United previously interested.
Chelsea are the current favourites to sign him, though, according to The Independent.
The report states that the Blues have presented a more convincing package than Arsenal.
In addition, Chelsea believe they can price Arsenal out of any potential move as they are in a stronger position to agree both a transfer fee and wages.
    READ MORE TRANSFER NEWS
Kudus is expected to be valued at around £40million by Ajax if he is to leave the club.
Arsenal are keen on him as one of their midfield targets, alongside the arrival of a new right-back.
However, the Gunners need to sell before buying following their early business.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have already trimmed their squad down considerably and could sign two midfielders before the window closes.

As well as Kudus, Mauricio Pochettino is also chasing a deal for Moises Caicedo, with talks ongoing.
Any deal for Kudus, who almost joined Everton last summer, could hinge on United’s business, though.
The Red Devils have been linked with the Ghana international but are currently looking to sign Atalanta’s Hojlund.
A bid has been launched for the Danish striker, but it is understood to be below the Italian side’s asking price.
Failure to land Hojlund could see United come back in for Kudus, who can also play as a striker or on the right wing.

Breaking record transfer fees along the way, Rice is now the most expensive British player in history.
It took a while to get the deal over the line as the two London clubs battled over payment structures.
Now officially a Gunner, the hard-work started straight away – travelling to the USA and training for Arsenal’s pre-season tour.
Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney has revealed the former West Ham captain is already feeling at home at his new North London club.

The Scotland international said: “Declan actually said the other day he feels like he’s been here for so long.
“It’s such a close group, great team-mates, great staff so I think they’re all loving it (the new players).
“We’ve had a few songs. Declan gave us Ice, Ice Baby as he always does.
“They’ve integrated really well and we’ve done team activities together. It’s been just what the new boys needed.”

Tierney also opened up about his own future at Arsenal following a significant cut in minutes since the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko last season.
He said: “It’s not really up to me (my future). I’m happy, I’m working hard every day and getting minutes. I’m just trying to do as well as I can.
“You can’t play every single game, every single season, every single year. I don’t expect that and I still made a lot of appearances last year.”

Ex-Man Utd star brutally trolls Kai Havertz on MUTV during 2-0 win over Arsenal but insists ‘I have nothing against him’

MUTV commentator Ben Thornley delivered a savage assessment of Kai Havertz’s performance during Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.Havertz started alongside fellow new signing Declan Rice in a midfield three with captain Martin Odegaard.

But Arsenal struggled for balance in the midfield as they fell to a 2-0 first-half deficit which they could not come back from.
Arteta changed much of his team at half-time but Havertz remained on the pitch for the second half.
And former United winger Thornley laid into Havertz just minutes after the interval.
Co-commentator Stewart Gardner asked Thornley what changes he would make if he was in the Arsenal dugout to which he replied: “Well, I’d have just taken Kai Havertz off cause he’s rubbish!”

Gardner then replied: “What have you got against Kai Havertz?”
Thornley responded: “I’ve got nothing against him!”
Thornley himself is an ex-United player having come through alongside the likes of David Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes in “The Class of 92.”
He made 14 appearances for United and was rated highly alongside the likes of Beckham and Scholes.

However injuries prevented him from ever making regular first team appearances for The Red Devils.
He called time on his playing career in 2010 after playing for Northern Premier side Witton Albion.
Havertz faces pressure to justify his £65million price tag after making the move from West to North London.
The German international will forever be well regarded at The Blues for his winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final but he struggled for consistency.
Arteta will be hoping to help Havertz find a new lease of life by deploying him in the midfield rather than using him as a false nine as he was at Chelsea.
The German midfielder has already found himself being mocked by fans after failing to impress during a skills show ahead of Arsenal’s clash with the MLS All Stars.
He did, however, manage to find the net against the MLS team as part of a 5-0 victory for the Gunners. More

Bizarrely, there was also a post-game penalty shoot-out despite United’s victory at the MetLife Stadium.
United also triumphed in that, with a 5-3 shootout victory.
Despite the fixture officially being a friendly – there was plenty of needle on and off the field.
United defender Lisandro Martinez caused a ruckus after wiping out Bukayo Saka with a reckless first half tackle.

The foul enraged Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard – with the two going at it as Saka was left on a heap on the floor.
Martinez received a yellow for his troubles, but it seems the bad temper on the pitch affected those in the crowd.
A video emerged shortly after the game of two fans fighting in the stands – although it is unclear which teams both men supported.

The two were then separated by bystanders, with the man in blue being dragged away from the scene.
The 2-0 loss to Manchester United was Arsenal’s first defeat of pre-season after a 1-1 draw with Nurnberg and a 5-0 victory over an MLS All Star team managed by Wayne Rooney.
