I’m a former Arsenal star.. without football I would have been forced into a life of drugs and crime

JERMAINE PENNANT has revealed that if it wasn’t for football he would have been forced into a life of drugs and crime. The former footballer, 40, had pressure thrust upon him from an early age.

He became the most expensive youth player in history when he signed for Arsenal from Notts County in 1999 for £2million when he was just 15.
He would go on to play for the likes of Liverpool, Birmingham City and Stoke before ending his career at Billericay Town in 2017.
In an interview with Lord Ping, Pennant opened up about how football saved him from a tough upbringing in Nottingham.
He grew up in The Meadows area of the city – an area known for a high rate of crime.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Pennant said: “I came from a very rough and tough estate, there weren’t many opportunities so I would have fallen into the mould of friends in the crime world, drugs and gang warfare. I’d have ended up following that mould.
“I wasn’t amazing at school because of football, I concentrated on that. Without football it would have been a total opposite life with different experiences, and not for the better.”
Pennant recently opened up on the childhood trauma he faced while presenting on TalkSPORT.
After speaking about Dele Alli’s shocking interview on The Overlap with Gary Neville, Pennant reflected on his own experiences growing up.

He said bullies at school would call him “The Cornflake Kid” owing to his family struggling to put enough food on the table for him to eat every day.
He also opened up on the neglect he received from both his parents.
He said: “I was embarrassed to tell my story, what I went through, where I came from, what I saw.
“I was abandoned by my mother when I was three, my father had me on weekends and when he took me back and my mum was never there.
“My father raised me to the best of his abilities and I was around six or seven, he then neglected me.
“So I would take myself to school, make my own dinners, which was Cornflakes. It got to the point where my mates would call me ‘The Cornflake Kid’, because that’s all I’d eat.
“Then my dad got into drugs, people coming in an out of the house, I’d say he was an addict. So I had no mum, no father, surrounded by drugs, guns and crime.”
    DON’T DEMONISE
Pennant was able to leave home at the age of 14 when he joined a Youth Training Scheme while playing for Notts County.
Reflecting on how football changed his life when talking to Lord Ping, Pennant said that footballers should not be demonised for what they earn.
He said: “Wages are out of footballers’ control, how much we earn, it’s a business and we generate entertainment and revenue which pays you to do that.
“If you have a massive business and your employees bring in X, Y and Z, you’re going to pay them well.
“It’s out of our control. People may dislike it but it does help young people from tough backgrounds.
“The majority of footballers are from lower-class backgrounds. Anyone can play it, you don’t need a rich family to get into it.

“I’ve never understood why actors and musicians don’t get the same grief. Maybe because it’s a lower class sport. You’ve come from nothing, and we don’t like that. To be an actor you need a degree, this and that.
“Even in F1, look how much Lewis Hamilton gets per race with sponsors too. Same with NBA and NFL. There are so many sportsmen who earn more, so it is frustrating.”

Arsenal and Chelsea have also expressed their interest in the 24-year-old Burkina Faso international, but Tottenham’s new offer could put them off chasing him.
The Bundesliga side however are expected to demand around £45m for Tapsoba, who has made over 100 appearances for the club.
The Leverkusen ace, who joined from Vitória de Guimarães in 2020, has been labelled an “exceptional” defender after shining under Xabi Alonso
However, there are questions marks over whether Postecoglou can convince Tapsoba to move to White Hart Lane.

So far the North London club has added Manor Solomon, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario this summer.

The 23-year-old began his career at Brondby before moving to the Bundesliga club after two spectacular seasons for the Danes.

Arsenal and Liverpool are both said to have “been in contact” following his impressive start with the Bundesliga side.
A bidding war is now expected with Newcastle and Tottenham said to be interested too.

Arsenal forgotten man dubbed ‘new Yaya Toure’ lined up for Premier League loan transfer as club offload fringe players

ALBERT SAMBI LOKONGA is on the brink of leaving Arsenal for Burnley. The Gunners want to clear out fringe players and are in talks for Lokonga – who was once dubbed the new Yaya Toure – to head to Turf Moor on a season-long loan, according to the Telegraph.
Albert Sambi Lokonga is set for a move to BurnleyCredit: Getty
The 23-year-old joined the Gunners for around £17million from Anderlecht in 2021 after Aterta was ordered to sign him by Lokonga’s former manager Vincent Kompany.
Kompany told Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel FIVE how Lokonga resembles Manchester City sensation Yaya Toure.
He said: “The first thing I did when I saw Sambi is I went to Mikel and also Pep [Guardiola], but Mikel first and said, ‘You got to watch this guy, he’s the new Yaya Toure.’
“I’m not sure I’m doing him a favour saying this stuff. Look, you know what I like about Sambi, what Yaya did have, is, he wants the ball no matter what.

“If the team is not doing well, give the ball to Sambi. Team doing well? Give the ball to Sambi. He will never hide away from his responsibilities.”
The Belgian international has failed to make a breakthrough in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI with only 39 appearances.
Now the midfielder has been hit by a minor injury and was scrapped from Arteta’s pre-season tour of the US.
After the club’s £170million splurge on midfielders Kai Havertz and Declan Rice, Lokonga has fallen down the pecking order.

Arsenal are prioritising offloading players to cover their extravagant summer spree and with Lokonga not living up to the hype he has been named the one to go.
The midfielder spent the second half of last season at Crystal Palace, making nine appearances for Patrick Viera’s side.
A move to The Clarets however could see Lokonga reunite with his old Anderlecht boss Kompany.

Arsenal ‘Star Boy’ Bukayo Saka currently Dream Team’s second-most popular player

ONLY Erling Haaland (£8.5m) is more popular among Dream Team managers than Bukayo Saka (£6m) ahead of the new season. At the time of writing, Manchester City’s prolific poacher features in 85.6% of teams created despite being the most-expensive player in the game by a wide margin.
This was to be expected as the Norwegian goal machine plundered 431 points in 2022/23, the second-highest total in Dream Team history, to propel his side to a monumental treble.

Haaland is quite clearly in a bracket of his own so it’s notable that Arsenal’s No7 is next on the podium.
Saka currently appears in 36.6% of teams, ahead of Kevin De Bruyne (£7.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£6.5m) in the midfield popularity contest.
The England international’s cheaper price is a factor and it may be that gaffers are forgoing the Manchester pair in favour of Saka when selecting their premium midfielder – Haaland’s cost means compromises must be made elsewhere.
But of course the primary reason for Saka’s popularity is his considerable talent.
He registered 15 goals and eleven assists last season with all but one of those goal involvements coming in the Premier League.
The Emirates’ resident ‘Star Boy’ was a significant contributor to the Gunners’ unexpected title challenge and with some high-profile recruits through the door – Declan Rice (£3.5m), Kai Havertz (£3.5m), Jurrien Timber (£3.5m) – Mikel Arteta’s side are likely to be strong again this season.
    A popular choiceCredit: DREAM TEAM
It’s easy to forget that Saka is still just 21 years old, his prime may yet be a few years in the future – a scary prospect for the world’s left-backs.
While it’s true he set a high standard for himself in 2022/23, most observers would expect him to maintain that level or even improve.
Arsenal’s August fixtures are another factor in Saka’s popularity.
They get underway with a home fixture against Nottingham Forest, who had the worst away record in the Premier League last term – Steve Cooper’s side mustered just eight points on the road.
Arsenal then travel to Crystal Palace, who actually performed better away from Selhurst Park in 2022/23, before finishing the month with Fulham’s visit to north London.
Favourable fixtures are more difficult to predict at the start of the campaign but that’s a relatively friendly set on paper which looks ripe for some Saka returns.
    Strong options for AugustCredit: GETTY
What’s interesting is that Martin Odegaard (£5m) is a full million cheaper and the Norwegian playmaker was just five points adrift of his team-mate last season, so he’s evidently a strong option for August and beyond as well.
In fairness, Arsenal’s captain is currently the fourth-most popular asset in his position so it’s not like this alternative strategy is being overlooked by Dream Team bosses – many gaffers may even be doubling up on Gunners midfielders.
What’s clear at this stage is that some early-season Saka magic would make a sizeable portion of Dream Team gaffers very happy.
It’ll be interesting to see how his returns compare to the less popular duo of De Bruyne and Fernandes…
