Folarin Balogun’s Monaco transfer in doubt as Arsenal ‘reject £34m bid’ forcing Ligue 1 side to consider other target

AS MONACO have had their £34million bid rejected for Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun, according to reports. According to RMC Sport, the Gunners value the 22-year-old much higher and appear to have ended the Ligue 1 club’s interest in the forward.

Monaco had been keen on the youngster after he scored 21 Ligue 1 goals for Stade Reims while on loan last season.
Balogun’s performances also earned him a first call-up from the USA after switching his international allegiance from England.
Balogun’s remarkable season made him a key target for the French club, despite him having made just two league appearances for Arsenal and spending an underwhelming time on loan to Middlesbrough last year.
The striker has announced he is open to leaving the Emirates this summer as he feels he has proved he can play at the top level.

But, Arsenal have slapped a £50m price tag on his head, according to CBS Sport.
The hefty valuation turned Monaco’s heads towards alternative option Karl Toko-Ekambi, who plays for Lyon.

However, the Cameroonian forward has confirmed he is set for a move to Saudi Arabia, forcing the Monegasque club to turn back to Balogun.

Tottenham are one side who are considering a move for Balogun as the club seeks a Harry Kane replacement following his transfer to Bayern Munich.
West Ham are also eyeing up a potential swoop for the striker to reinforce their front line with flop Italian Gianluca Scamacca sizing up a move to Inter Milan, according to TalkSPORT.
The £50m valuation has curbed interest from Inter Milan and their city rivals AC Milan. More

According to Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest have submitted a formal proposal for Tavares.
Forest are looking to sign Tavares on a permanent deal, with negotiations over personal terms with the player ongoing.
Tavares is also reportedly a target for a pair of Bundesliga clubs.
Both Wolsburg and Werder Bremen have been said to be interested in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray were also eyeing a move for the Portuguese left-back earlier this summer.
Tavares has made 28 appearances for Arsenal since signing from Benfica in 2021.
He spent last season on loan in France with Marseille, scoring six times in 31 league matches as he helped the club finish third in Ligue 1.
However, he has not appeared to be part of Mikel Arteta’s plans since returning to the Emirates Stadium.

Tavares was left out of the squad for the club’s pre-season tour of the USA.
He was also not named on the bench for Saturday’s season opener at home to Forest.
If his move to the City Ground is completed, Tavares will become the club’s fourth summer signing.
He will not be the first player to arrive from Arsenal, though, with Matt Turner already completing the switch.

New Arsenal signing David Raya boldly claims he could have enjoyed career as an OUTFIELD PLAYER

NEW Arsenal keeper David Raya has been thinking outside the box.The loanee from Brentford reckons he could be an OUTFIELD player.

That supports the verdict of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who believes the Spaniard is skilful enough to be a “No 10”.
Raya, 27, has even assessed exactly what level he could play at if he didn’t stick between the sticks.
And if anyone should know, he should.
The two-cap star has worked his way up the leagues since a loan spell with fifth-tier Southport in 2014-15.

Brentford pouched Raya from Blackburn in 2019.
And his outstanding Premier League form helped the Bees finish ninth last season.
Ahead of his switch to the Emirates, Raya told Brentford’s media team: “In Spain, I could play in the third division as an outfield player.”
He then explained to Arsenal’s website: “My brother always put me in a goal. With my mates, I always played outfield.

“I enjoyed playing further up the pitch and I think that’s why I’m comfortable on the ball.

“Next to my house, there were always young guys playing on the futsal pitch. I always played outfield in those games.”
Raya must hope his extra ability with his feet helps him displace England ace Aaron Ramsdale, 25, as Gunners’ No1.
If it does make the difference, he might want to thank Klopp for his tiny role in bigging up his footwork.
After Liverpool’s 3-3 Prem draw at the Brentford Community Stadium in September 2021, the German said: “The goalkeeper could wear the number 10 shirt.
“He has sent several incredible balls, exactly what you should do when you play against us.”
Raya’s £3million loan deal includes the option of a £27m permanent move.
He signed a new two-year Brentford contract to protect his value just ahead of the move.

But Bees’ director of football Phil Giles explained: “It enables this deal to be done more rapidly, with all parties wanting to make this a permanent transfer as soon as practically possible.
“David’s contract extension is a fall-back position in the event that the transfer is not made permanent. I’m not expecting to see David back at Brentford, although if ever that happened then of course the opportunity to work with such a high-class goalkeeper for up to two more years would in many ways be an unexpected bonus.” More

Arsenal SIGN David Raya in £3m loan transfer with buy option after Brentford cave on £40m demands

ARSENAL have completed the signing of Brentford keeper David Raya on a £3million loan deal with the option of a £27m permanent move. The 27-year-old Spanish international will now go head-to-head with Aaron Ramsdale to become Mikel Arteta’s first choice.

Raya arrives at the Emirates highly recommended by goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, who worked with the player at Brentford before joining Arteta’s backroom staff.
And it is his ability to play out from the back with the ball at his feet which could give him the edge over England international Ramsdale.
With Arsenal about to return to the Champions League after a six-year absence, Arteta wants a keeper who is comfortable leaving his penalty area to cover the space behind his back four and can pass the ball accurately to beat the high press.
After handing Ramsdale a lucrative new five-year contract in May, Arsenal were not planning on signing another goalkeeper this summer.

But they changed their plans when Raya became available and believed it was too good an opportunity to turn down.
Brentford had initially demanded £40m for a player who only cost them £2m when they bought him from Blackburn in 2019.
That was enough to deter interest from Spurs and Manchester United for a player with just 12 months remaining on his contract.
But Raya made it clear to Brentford boss Thomas Frank that he wanted to move to Arsenal to resume work with Cana and would not sign for anyone else.

So now the clubs have reached a compromise agreement, with Raya signing a new Brentford contract while still having the chance to sign permanently for Arsenal next summer if everything goes according to plan at the Emirates.
Raya will go straight into the matchday squad for the Gunners’ trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.
The Gunners kicked off their Premier League campaign last Saturday with a 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest. More

The England midfielder, 24, started in Arsenal’s season debut against Nottingham Forest.
Bukayo Saka’s superb first-half strike added to Eddie Nketiah’s opener, helping Arsenal begin their campaign with a 2-1 win.
Rice was effective in the Arsenal midfield and came close on a couple of occasions to adding a third for the home side.
However, a certain moment did not go unnoticed as West Ham fans spotted a hilarious blunder from their former captain.

The England midfielder tried to control the ball behind the Forest goal, but instead slipped before falling backwards.
    One fan responded: “100m flop!”.

With West Ham receiving a whopping £100m by 2025 with a further £5m in bonuses.
Rice’s exit ended a long-running transfer saga which left the Hammers angry with the delay.
Irons fans have also been extremely frustrated with their side’s lack of signings after Rice’s departure.
But despite the mistimed error from Rice, he came close to scoring when his 20-yard strike was pushed on to the post by Turner’s fingertip save.
The game had been delayed by 30 minutes because of an e-ticketing system issue that meant the majority of fans were still outside the Emirates at the scheduled kick-off time of 12:30 BST More

Arsenal player ratings: Bukayo Saka back with a bang but Kai Havertz looks just as lost on home debut

BUKAYO SAKA and Gabriel Martinelli showed a signal of intent against Nottingham Forest today, that they are ready to come back and challenge for the title again. The two wingers put in a sensational display in a 2-1 victory, which saw Mikel Arteta’s men put back into second place in the table, at least until the 3pm kick-offs began.

Kai Havertz was far from his brilliant best in his Arsenal Prem debutCredit: Reuters
Mikel Arteta’s summer recruits looked impressive, particularly in the first half of the game.
Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber seemed to instantly settle into the match, with the latter looking comfortable in a variety of positions so far.
However, the same can’t be said for £65 million Kai Havertz, who looked lost in midfield for the Gunners, and failed to make a real impact in the game.
There was room for improvement for both teams, but with a long season ahead, their best is yet to come.

Here is how SunSport’s Lloyd Canfield rated the Arsenal display.
    Aaron Ramsdale – 5
Had little to do, but did what was asked of him to get the victory. Admittedly looked a little shaky at times in the second half and lost the clean sheet.
The arrival of David Raya could be good for him.
    Ben White – 6
Reverted back to his preferred centre-back spot for today’s game, good passing range and showed great recovery pace too.
    Most read in Football
    William Saliba – 7
A solid, dependable defensive display, combined with a deft ‘Sergio Busquets to Messi’ like assist for Bukayo Saka’s rocket.
Proved why he is one of the world’s best and most valuable centre-half’s.
    Jurrien Timber – 7
Inpenetrable in the left back spot and looked comfortable on the ball too before he hobbled off with an injury early in the 2nd half.
Will prove valuable for Arteta, especially if he is that good at right-back, centre-back and in midfield as reported.
Partey only misplaced six of 102 passes
    Thomas Partey – 6
Looked comfortable deputising in the right-back position for most of the game. Strong on and off the ball.
    Declan Rice – 7
Looked at home playing at the carpet, and seemed to slot into Mikel Arteta’s plans seamlessly.
Didn’t need to do anything extraordinary, but perhaps that is testament to his lack of errors.
Declan Rice slotted in seamlessly into the Arsenal midfield
    Martin Odegaard – 6
Tricky feet and some lovely deft passes. Captain fantastic who led by example today.
However, missing some end product, and we have seen him dazzle in this league.
    Kai Havertz – 5
Failed to really settle into the game, and didn’t light up the pitch in the same way the fellow new signings did.
Odegaard looked streets better than him in the advanced number 8 position. His best is yet to come.
    Bukayo Saka – 8
Terrorised the Forest defence, and gave ex-Chelsea left back Ola Aina a torrid time, leaving him booked after 28 minutes.
Scored a stunner on the 32nd minute to double the lead for The Gunners. Big season inbound.
Saka was a thorn in Forest’s side
    Gabriel Martinelli – 8
Showed absolutely sublime skill to assist Eddie Nketiah for the opener, and pressed the Forest defence really well.
    Eddie Nketiah – 7
Continued his fine goal-scoring record to grab Arsenal’s first goal of the 23/24 campaign with a deft finish.
Proved to the world why Arsenal are looking at selling Folarin Balogun, and not him.

    Subs
Takehiro Tomiyasu (for Jurrien Timber, 49 mins) – 5
Was bought on out of necessity for the injured Jurrien Timber, not as good as him on the ball, but a pretty solid defensive showing.
Leandro Trossard (for Eddie Nketiah, 73 mins) – 5
Failed to really impact the game, but some nice touches nonetheless.

Celtic-linked Kieran Tierney edges closer to Arsenal transfer exit as he’s left OUT of squad for Gunners’ season opener

KIERAN TIERNEY’S edging closer to an Arsenal exit after Mikel Arteta left the Scotland star out of his match-day squad for today’s big Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest.SunSport understands the £25 million Scotland star IS fit but simply hasn’t made the cut for Arteta whose decision has sent a clear signal over the defender’s future prospects.
Kieran Tierney toured the States with ArsenalCredit: Getty
Newcastle United are front-runners for the 26-year-old while Spanish outfit Real Sociedad have also declared their interest.
SunSport revealed that Tierney had left the door open for a sensational return to first club Celtic and boss Brendan Rodgers last month publicly refused to rule out a swoop.
But the Treble winners have yet to make a formal approach to the Gunners with a deal – even a loan for the season – always looking a huge ask given the player’s six-figure weekly salary and likely seven-figure fee just to take him for a season.
Tierney barely featured from the start last term as Arsenal went for the title before fading in the closing stages and Arteta favoured Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The Arsenal squad for today’s clash
Now he’s also added Dutchman Jurrien Timber for £30 million during pre-season and that’s pushed the Scot further down the pecking order.
A move for Tierney over the next fortnight before the transfer window shuts now looks highly likely.
Timber mainly played as a centre-back in Holland but was also utilised at right-back and Mikel Arteta has tried him at left-back in some of Arsenal’s pre-season outings.
But Arteta tried to ensure Tierney he DID have a future in North London.
