Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham tells Ange Postecoglou to beat Arsenal to top transfer target in January

TOTTENHAM legend Teddy Sheringham has urged Spurs to beat Arsenal to the signing of Ivan Toney in January.Spurs have found success since moving Heung Min Son to a No9 role but have struggled to blow teams away despite creating numerous chances.

Although they’ve scored in every game they’ve played this season, Spurs have only scored more than two goals in a game twice this season – against Burnley and Newcastle.
And former striker Sheringham believes that Brentford’s Toney would be the perfect solution for them to become a free-scoring side.
Toney is currently suspended for a gambling ban but will be free to play again on January 17.
Brentford want £100million for the striker who is also being courted by Arsenal and Chelsea.

On bringing Toney to the club, he told Gambling Zone: “Everyone is talking about Arsenal getting Ivan Toney in January.
“He seems to be the only player in the centre forward position that might be available in the next window. I would love to see Tottenham nick him off of Brentford and get there before Arsenal do.
“Toney has got something about him. He carries himself well and can take on the mantle of being the main man at a club.
“Everyone is suggesting that he could be the icing on the cake for Arsenal, but I think he could be a big, big player for Tottenham at this moment in time.

“He could spearhead Tottenham’s attack. Sonny isn’t really a centre forward. He loves to run in behind, but he doesn’t play like a centre forward – you need a focal point in your team.
“You need that man that brings it all together. A player that can lead the line, stretch defences, hold the ball up and bring others into play. I see Ivan Toney as a player that is more than capable of doing that.”
Sheringham also said that he’s delighted with the job Ange Postecoglou has done since taking over, but said he needs more squad depth if he is to fulfil his ambitions at Spurs.
Sheringham said: “The future looks bright under Ange. He has Romero back now, Van de Ven will be back in the New Year and both of those players give you defensive stability.
“A great season would see Tottenham get into a Champions League spot and win the FA Cup. That would be a great season. You can’t ask for more than that.
“Winning the FA Cup on its own would be a great season, but the club will be looking at the financial rewards qualifying for the Champions League brings, which allows you to bring in better players.
“For Tottenham to keep moving in the right direction and to give the club the best possible chance of qualifying for the Champions League, they need more quality. Without a doubt.”
Spurs travel to Nottingham Forest tonight at 8pm.
A victory move level on points with Manchester City in fourth but remain behind them due to City’s superior goal difference. More

A loan deal for the rest of the season and a permanent transfer have both been discussed with Villarreal.
Should Cedric join the LaLiga side, it would see him become team-mates with ex-Gunner Francis Coquelin.
Meanwhile, there is also interest from an unnamed Turkish club, claim ESPN.
Cedric’s contract at the Emirates expires at the end of the season.

Arsenal are open to cashing in on him next month to avoid losing the right-back for free.
Cedric, who is thought to earn close to £100,000-a-week, was initially set to leave in the summer but a move failed to materialise.
The forgotten man is now surplus to requirements, having played just three times this season.
He has fallen behind the likes of Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber in the pecking order.

However, that has not stopped the rampant speculation on his future.
Arsenal and Chelsea have been the clubs most heavily linked with a move for the England forward, with some reports suggesting he could cost as much as £100million.
And now with the January transfer window fast approaching, Fabrizio Romano has revealed Toney’s preference for a transfer.
Speaking on his Kick channel, via The Boot Room, Romano said: “From what I’m hearing, this is one more detail on Ivan Toney.

“This is a rumour I’m hearing that his preference in terms of a top club move in January or the summer would be to go to Arsenal.
“From what I’m hearing Ivan Toney could be really excited by the possibility of joining Arsenal.”
However, SunSport reported in November that Toney was torn over the idea of a transfer in January, with a source saying that he feels he has a debt to pay to Brentford for sticking by him.
Toney, 27, scored 20 Premier League goals for the Bees last season before his ban.

His record marked him out as one of the most prolific forwards in the division under Thomas Frank.
Brentford have managed in his absence and find themselves firmly in midtable.
However, the Bees have just lost fellow star man – and this season’s top scorer – Bryan Mbuemo to injury.
Despite that, Brentford may still choose to cash in on Toney with his ban set to expire.
Toney cannot return to competitive action until January 17 at the earliest.
He has already appeared in a couple of behind-closed-doors friendlies, scoring on his return game in October before netting again in a match against Watford last month.

Mikel Arteta hails Arsenal wonderkid as ‘next Jack Wilshere’ ahead of PSV Champions League clash

ARSENAL manager Mikel Arteta has praised academy wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri by comparing him to club hero Jack Wilshere.Nwaneri, 16, has travelled with the Gunners to the Netherlands and is expected to take part in tonight’s Champions League dead rubber against PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadion.

Arteta is very impressed with the playmaker, who already left his mark in English football last year by becoming the youngest ever player to compete in the Premier League at 15 years and 181 days old.
In fact, the Spanish tactician is so dazzled by the England Under-17 international that he sees similarities to former team-mate Wilshere because of the way he handles the ball in tight areas.
And that is no coincidence as Nwaneri could make even more history in Eindhoven by also becoming the youngest Arsenal player to play in the Champions League at 16 years and 265 days, beating none other than Wilshere’s 2008 record by 64 days.
Arteta said: “There’s something unique that he’s got that I really liked from the beginning, his ability to take the ball in tight areas and to escape a little bit like Jack Wilshere used to do.

“The personality he has, he trains with us like he trains with the Under-18s or Under-16s and I love that in a player.
“He’s got that bit between his teeth as well that he wants to show every single day how good he is and to impress people.
“When you have someone like that, you have to give him hope and as well it was a really important moment for us.
“We really wanted to keep him and I think it was a strange sign for him that this is his place for him to develop. It is early days, but we need to get the machine going because we want more of those and we have to produce more of those.

“There’s a lot of work going into the academy and that’s big credit to all of them every single day for the amount of work that they’re putting in. They do a lot, they’ve planted the seeds and now we need to bring them up.”
Nwaneri isn’t the only youngster expected to make his Champions League debut at Eindhoven.
The versatile forward has also been joined by fellow Arsenal academy talents Lino Sousa, 18, and Reuell Walters, 18.
Arteta added: “Three big prospects. We want to bring a lot of players from a system and they deserve to be here.
“They’re still really really young but we want to get them the experience because they have the talent hopefully to be very close to us. We’ll try to give them the opportunity if we can in the right moment.
“Obviously it gets harder and harder, so the talent has to be really good and and you have to find and build the space in the squad to give that talent an opportunity.
“We should not forget that because it’s a big part of what we want to do in the future. And especially when you have it, you cannot let it go. I think we have some good space and good talent to develop in the environment.
“I think on TV, it looks easier. If one day we give them a chance to train with the boys, they will probably realise that the level is really, really high.
“The competition is huge, because we can pick players from anywhere in the world and we have the ability to do that.”

Arsenal boss Arteta says injured Jurrien Timber is ‘flying’ but still delivers bad news about crocked star

ARSENAL manager Mikel Arteta revealed injured star Jurrien Timber is “flying” as he works his way back to full fitness…But Arteta also admitted that is not enough to bring Timber back in the near future as he will still be out for a “long time”.

But Arteta confirmed Timber is still facing a long time in the sidelinesCredit: Getty
The versatile defender joined the Gunners last summer after a £38million deal with Ajax but picked up a knee injury on his very first Premier League match against Nottingham Forest in August.
Initial reports suggested the Netherlands international could be out for the rest of the season.
Arteta, though, raised fans’ hopes of a swifter comeback as he insists the 22-year-old is making “immense “incredible” progress during his gruelling road to recovery.
However, the Spanish tactician is still not expecting Timber back in his backline any time soon.

Arteta said: “Timber is doing very well. He’s flying to be fair, the stage he is right now.
“The way he works every single day is incredibly satisfying to watch but unfortunately we’re going to miss him still for a long time.
“I think he’s in a really good place.”
Arteta had big plans for Timber and hoped he would prove to be a major catalyst in Arsenal’s bid to win their first Premier League title in 20 years.

That is because the Dutch star can cover every single position in defence.
However, Timber’s absence hasn’t really affected the North Londoners’ defensive prowess.

The strong defender, who is also good on the ball, was checked out by Palace last week as they prepare for Guehi to move on for a huge fee.
The nine-cap Englishman, 23, is likely to leave the Eagles next summer, with Manchester United and Arsenal keen.
But if a major bid comes in during next month’s transfer window they could have to scramble to find someone new as a replacement.
United are tipped to move for both the centre-back and Brentford striker Ivan Toney in January.

Mikel Arteta storms off BEFORE full-time of Arsenal’s loss to Aston Villa then fumes at ‘clear and obvious’ decisions

ANGRY Mikel Arteta stormed off BEFORE the end of Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa – then raged at “clear and obvious” decisions that went against his team.John McGinn’s early hammer strike stopped the Gunners returning top of the Prem as the banned Gunners boss was forced to watch from the box.

And Arteta’s reaction left Arsenal supporters fearing for their players – although he later revealed it was yet more controversy over refereeing decisions that he had a “big opinion” on.
After the boss disappeared into a backroom in stoppage time, one fan wrote, “He’s fuming” and another added: “Cooking up another fine.”
That follows Arteta being charged over a blast at officials after last month’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle – although that FA verdict is not yet in.
This time the Gunners boss controlled his temper in his post-match interview.

But about both decisions, Arteta said: “Clear and obvious” and admitted he had “a big opinion”.
Referee Jarred Gillett did not see enough in Douglas Luiz’s challenge on Gabriel Jesus to give a spot-kick.
But he did penalise Havertz for handball in the 90th-minute scramble that ended with the ball in the Aston Villa net.
On both occasions, VAR Michael Salisbury saw no reason to ask Gillett to reconsider.

Arteta refused to explain what he meant by “clear and obvious”.
But in a separate interview, on the disallowed goal, he said, “I prefer not to comment” and on the potential penalty, he added: “I think that one was even clearer.”
Arteta is waiting to learn his fate after being hit with a misconduct charge for his extraordinary outburst about VAR and the quality of match officials after his team’s other league defeat at Newcastle.
And the Spaniard served a one-match touchline ban at Villa Park last night because he picked up his third yellow card of the season for overcelebrating Arsenal’s late, late win at Luton on Tuesday.
Arteta said: “I’m very disappointed with the result after the way we played. We deserved more than what we had. I think we were the better team.
“I haven’t seen my team do much more than what we have done to Villa today since we were here in February.
“It wasn’t enough to win because we lacked the accuracy in the opponents box to put the ball in the back of the net with the amount of situations that we generated.”
