Arsenal tried to offload Reiss Nelson in loan transfer this summer but 20-year-old rejected it to fight for place

ARSENAL tried to send Reiss Nelson out on loan this summer – but the determined playmaker wanted to stay and fight for his place.
Nelson has made just three appearances this season, all in cup competitions, and did not make the bench for last Sunday’s defeat to Leicester.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta revealed he planned to send the 20-year-old out on loan for the season to receive vital game time following the arrival of Willian.
Arteta said: “We ended up with a large squad at the end of the transfer market.
“We had a few plans in mind with Reiss. One of them was to send him on loan to get more minutes because of the competition we have up front.
“The reality is he has been really good in training. He wants to stay here. He wants to fight for his place.”

Arteta was convinced to keep Nelson after the winger – who can also play centrally – showed desire to stay at the Emirates.
He said: “Reiss was really convinced that he wanted to fight to stay here.
“When you see that willingness and that passion and that security in a player you feel tempted to keep him even though you know that opportunities are going to be restricted and he is not going to have a lot of continuity in his play.

“But things change very quickly and if he starts playing and playing well and he does what he can do, why not? He could start to play more games.”

Nelson is competing with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, record signing Nicolas Pepe, summer arrival Willian and fellow starlet Bukayo Saka for a place in the starting line-up.
He is expected to be involved in the Gunners’ Europa League group stage match at home against Dundalk tonight.
And Arteta insisted there will be further chances for Nelson to shine.
He explained: “He is going to get the chances in the right moments.
“What I am pleased with is how he has assimilated the situation – not playing a lot of minutes in the first few weeks.

“As everybody can see, things are changing very quickly. We are getting injuries.
“We will get more injuries because of the schedule that we have and he will get the opportunities.
“Then it will come down to him to take them or not.
“I tried to explain to him why he isn’t in the team. Obviously to compare things that happened eight or nine months ago is difficult, in a positive or negative way all the time.
“But I try to have a very open communication with the players and try to get the doubts out of their mind, and try to talk clearly when they play or don’t play the reasons behind that.”

Arsenal boss Arteta reportedly ‘wanted to seal Aouar transfer on deadline day instead of Partey and disagreed with Edu’

A FRENCH newspaper has claimed Arsenal chief Edu overruled Mikel Arteta in the latest transfer window.
Gunners boss Arteta allegedly informed the club’s technical director he wanted Lyon’s Houssem Aouar instead of Thomas Partey.

However, L’Equipe reports that Brazilian Edu got his way when it came to making the final decision as he ‘obviously had more weight’.
Arsenal secured the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Partey from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day earlier this month.
The 27-year-old has since gone on to appear three times under Arteta.

But prior to him completing his switch to the capital, speculation mounted that Aouar had become the No1 target for the North London side.
Talks began between Arsenal and Lyon over a potential deal for the French international midfielder, 22.
But Lyon rejected all their advances and managed to hold on to their ace.
These latest claims state Arteta hoped Arsenal would go back to try and get a move done, but instead they focused on securing Partey, despite the manager’s supposed preference being Aouar.

The Spaniard does not seem to be too disappointed at having Partey in his squad, judging by his recent remarks.

Arteta praised his new boy following his first start for Arsenal against Rapid Vienna in a 2-1 Europa League win last week.
He said: “I was really impressed because he looked really confident, he grabbed the game in the most difficult period, he took responsibility, he was really comfortable on the ball, he made a lot of right decisions, he was really strong in the challenges in every transition moment.”

Shkodran Mustafi rejects Arsenal contract offer and tells club he ‘intends to leave at end of season on free transfer’

SHKODRAN MUSTAFI has told Arsenal that he wants to leave the club at the end of the season, according to reports.
The Gunners have just over two months to tie the German down to a new deal before he can negotiate a pre-agreement with a club abroad.

And Football.London claim Mustafi, 28, wants to try his luck elsewhere.
Lazio and Napoli were among the clubs linked to the centre-back during the transfer window.
But Mustafi stayed put amid Calum Chambers’ injury and uncertainty over William Saliba’s readiness for first-team action.

With his wife’s family living in Switzerland and a new German agency hired earlier in the year, Mustafi could be ready to return to the continent.
The defender’s contract is up at the end of the campaign, although the Gunners are said to have offered him a new deal.
That has reportedly been rejected and the club will have to weigh up whether to agree a sale in January or risk losing him for free in the summer.
Mikel Arteta had used Mustafi prominently when coming in as Arsenal boss.

A hamstring injury ruled the player out of the final weeks of last season and he returned to the bench for Thursday’s win at Rapid Vienna.

On Sunday night, Mustafi completed his comeback by coming off the bench for David Luiz against Leicester.
The Brazilian’s new muscle injury may provide a chance for the World Cup winner to have a run in the team, with Rob Holding and Pablo Mari also out.
In July, Arteta praised Mustafi for his work ethic despite struggling to win fans over for much of his Arsenal career.

He told reporters: “Everyone can make mistakes, of course, but if they are willing to keep trying then they will get rewarded.
“Musti’s attitude, the way he is training, attention levels, the questions he is asking and how much he wants to help everybody has been really good since I joined.”
On the contract situation, he added: “That’s something the club has to address but he knows my opinion on that.”

Chelsea star Jorginho admits to Arsenal transfer negotiations in the summer – but says he never wanted to quit Blues

CHELSEA’S Jorginho admitted he was ‘open to negotiations’ with Arsenal over the summer – but said he never wanted to leave Stamford Bridge.
The Italian international, 28, was heavily linked with a move across London to join rivals Arsenal as the Gunners were on the hunt for a midfielder.

But Mikel Arteta coughed up £45million to activate Thomas Partey’s Atletico Madrid release clause and Jorginho remained in West London.
He told ESPN Brazil: “I believe that every player is open to negotiations.
“So I believe there was something they talked about.

“And in the end it was decided that I remain here.

“Now my head is here and we’re going to do a great job with Chelsea, which I always wanted to do.”
Jorginho moved to England in 2018 in a £57.4m transfer from Napoli as he followed head coach Maurizio Sarri to the club.
The Brazilian-born star rejected Manchester City at the last minute – where Arteta was No2 at the time and remained a fan of the central midfielder.
Reports suggested the Blues may offer their vice-captain a new contract after an impressive start to the season.

Jorginho’s current deal earns him £110,000 a week and expires in 2023.
Despite missing a penalty against Liverpool, Jorginho has bagged three goals and an assist in his first four Premier League games this campaign.
He has established himself alongside N’Golo Kante in Frank Lampard’s starting XI and has often captained the side in the absence of Cesar Azpilicueta.
The Blues spent over £230m in the latest window, with the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell all arriving in big-money deals.
And as a result there is plenty of competition for places – something Jorginho says the side will benefit from as they get to grips with the new faces.

He added: “They had a big market. The players who arrived have great potential and can certainly help this club a lot.
“They’re already doing and will do much more. When there’s this high competition among the players, it turns out that the level of the team goes up, and when the level of the team goes up, the team ends up becoming better and even more competitive to reach the top.
“So I believe that the arrival of these great players only brings good things and will certainly help the group and the club.
“It’s normal that you need time. How long did Liverpool work to win something?
“So I believe that every change, every beginning of a project, we need to believe in the project for it to bear fruit and bring results. So it’s normal that you need this working time.”

Ainsley Maitland-Niles reveals Mikel Arteta convinced him into Arsenal stay after talks despite transfer interest

AINSLEY MAITLAND-NILES revealed Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta convinced him to stay in North London over the summer.
The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Wolves to replace Matt Doherty who joined Jose Mourinho’s Spurs for £15million.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side even submitted an offer of more than £20m to bring Maitland-Niles to Molineux.
But the versatile England new-boy turned down a move to the Midlands after a chat with his manager convinced him to remain a Gunner.
Arteta always wanted him at the Emirates and showed his belief in the youngster’s ability by handing him starts in both the FA Cup semi-final and final last term.

Maitland-Niles said: “There was a lot of speculation going around, but I chose to stay at the club I love.
“I am happy with my decision and I am sure the manager is happy that I stayed as well.
“It was about the manager having faith in me and him letting me know what’s going on and the situation. He did that and everything was fine in the end.
“He just installed a lot of confidence in me that I had in myself, but maybe I didn’t know how to bring out. He has helped me do that.

“We work well as a team together and he knows how to get the best out of me, and now I am learning to get the best out of myself more regularly now.

“I can only thank him along the way and carry on the run of form we have had.”
Maitland-Niles’ good form saw him earn a senior Three Lions debut for Gareth Southgate’s side against Denmark in September.
He went on to make a full debut by starting against the same opponents in the Nations League clash earlier this month.
And he denied there was ever a rift with Arteta – despite talk he would quit the club.

Maitland-Niles added: “There was never a rocky relationship between us.
“It was just he demanded more from me than I was demanding from myself. He told me that and I had to work to do to get back into the team. That’s as simple as it was.
“The manager can always see different things than a player can see because he is looking at it from a different angle.
“He has got different feelings, different emotions to what I feel at the time. It is a good job that I did listen. It is all paying off now.”

Mesut Ozil could leave Arsenal now with MLS, Qatar, Portugal and Brazil transfer windows still open

MESUT OZIL still has a number of escape options from Arsenal even though the European transfer window has ended.
The 32-year-old has not played since March for the Gunners as Mikel Arteta’s side attempted to force their highest-paid player out of the club.

But after failing to reach a pay-off settlement with the £350,000-a-week German World Cup winner, the attacker has been left out in the cold this term.
Arteta has left Ozil out of both his 25-man Premier League and European squads, leaving him unable to feature for the North Londoners.
The star, who joined from Real Madrid in 2013, released an emotional statement yesterday hitting out at the ‘lack of loyalty’ shown to him by Arsenal.

And he also vowed not to be forced out of the club and promised to give everything in order to regain his place in the team.
Despite that promise, Arsenal are still desperate to shift Ozil as quickly as possible.
And there are a number of places he could still go if he gives in and leaves – with the MLS believed to be favourite to get him.
The summer window in the US would normally be closed by the second week of August – but due to the coronavirus crisis it was extended until October 29.

And DC United are the latest team to be linked with a swoop for the ace.
Ozil has been linked with a move to the States in the past, but his vast wages could provide a problem, and it may have to wait until January before any potential deal could be concluded.
But that is not his only option – with one being much closer to home.
Portuguese clubs have until October 25 to finalise business.

Meanwhile, a switch to South America may tickle his fancy should he receive an offer – and Brazilian sides have until November 9 to bring players in.
Amore likely option financially could be the money-laden Middle East.
He has been linked with a move to Qatar, but any interested clubs will have to move fast with their deadline also being on October 25. More
