Arsenal consider shock Sander Berge transfer from Sheffield United after missing out on midfield star in January

ARSENAL are considering a shock transfer move for Sheffield United midfield star Sander Berge, according to reports in Norway.
The Gunners were one of the clubs keeping tabs on Berge in January, but were beaten to the punch by United’s surprise swoop.

Manchester United were also in the hunt for the highly-rated 22-year-old, who was at the time playing for Belgian club Genk.
But it was Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder who put his money where his mouth was, and stumped up a club record £22million transfer fee to recruit the Norway international.
However Norwegian newspaper VG reports that Arsenal have continued to monitor Berge’s progress and are considering another attempt to buy him after Sheffield United’s dismal start to the season.
They say Arsenal believe 6ft 5in Berge would give them a more physical presence in midfield.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has already spent £45m on Atletico Madrid’s midfield powerhouse Thomas Partey.
But Arteta is still on the lookout for another midfielder, and Berge is one of the options, along with Houssem Aouar of Lyon who would be significantly more expensive.
Berge is a big hit with Sheffield United fans, and has already made 25 appearances, scoring twice.
However with the Blades bottom of the Premier League, with just one point from nine games so far, he could be on his way at the end of the season, if not in January.

Wilder claims Berge has been United’s best player this season, and has admitted that interest from bigger clubs is inevitable.
He said: “Sander was a fantastic signing for us.
“We want him to grow with us, but we understand that the big clubs are interested when he performs so well.
“That means we, and Sander, are doing something right.

“People judged Sander when we signed him. They expected everything to happen immediately.
“There were some harsh opinions about him.
“People thought he would not be a success in the Premier League, but he has turned it upside down. Sander has been our best player this season.
“I just have to say it: Sander has been unique. He is the one who has stood out for us.
“He is a complete midfielder. He can play as an 8 and as 6. He can play in different formations.”

Arsenal in talks with Folarin Balogun over new contract with fresh hopes 19-year-old striker will stay after U-turn

ARSENAL have reportedly restarted talks over a new contract for young Gunner Folarin Balogun.

Balogun had looked set to quit the Emirates after a previous breakdown in talks over a new deal.
His current contract is due to run out in June 2021.
The club rejected a bid in the region of £5million from Brentford in January.

But many believed he would be sold in the summer – 12 months out from becoming a free agent – as a number of clubs had shown an interest in the forward.
The report states Sheffield United saw an offer turned down.
Blades boss Chris Wilder had openly expressed his desire to bring Balogun to Bramall Lane.
However, the England and USA youth international remained with the Gunners.

Sheffield United instead bolstered their forward division with the record signing of another Three Lions youth star in Rhian Brewster for £23.5m from Liverpool.

Balogun made his Arsenal debut off the bench in the 3-0 Europa League win over Dundalk in October.
And the ace – who was born in New York – is being embedded into Arteta’s first-team squad after bagging 15 goals and seven assists in 40 games for the Under-23s.
But he will be able to talk to foreign sides from January and Arsenal could find themselves with a battle on their hands to keep the talented youngster.
There is plenty of competition for places with fellow young guns Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson already fighting for game time.

Man Utd and Arsenal on transfer alert with Barcelona fearing Ousmane Dembele will leave on FREE

MANCHESTER UNITED and Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Ousmane Dembele with Barcelona worried the attacker will leave on a free transfer.
Dembele’s contract expires in 2022 and the Spanish giants fear he will wait it out before leaving the club for nothing.

According to the Express, Dembele is reluctant to sign a new contract at Barca and is looking to secure more regular football at a new club.
United were linked with a £45million move for Dembele this summer with Barca known to be in financial turmoil following the global pandemic.
Their top target remains Jadon Sancho but United realise Dembele could provide a much cheaper alternative if they are prepared to wait for his contract to run down.
The 23-year-old France international has been dogged by injury problems since his move from Borussia Dortmund to Barca.

Dembele only returned from a ten-month layoff due to muscle and hamstring injuries in September.
Barcelona were reportedly keen to offload Dembele in the summer although the talented attacker is determined to see out his current deal.
It will be a huge blow for Barca if he leaves on a free transfer after forking out £135m in his move from Germany.

Dembele has yet to deliver on his hefty price tag although the undoubted potential remains if he can stay clear of more injuries.
Arsenal are also interested in the winger with the Gunners needing to add some creativity to their team.
Mikel Arteta has tightened their defence but his focus will be on honing their attack and Dembele’s pace and flair could provide a new dimension to their front line.

Arsenal missed out on Diogo Jota transfer after he turned down ‘several offers’ to join Atletico Madrid instead

ARSENAL missed out on signing Diogo Jota after he turned down ‘several offers’ to instead join Atletico Madrid, reports say.

And the Gunners – managed by Arsene Wenger at the time – were among those believed to have sent scouts to watch him play.
And they would later rival West Ham in a transfer battle which eventually ended with Jota joining Atletico in Spain, according to The Athletic.
Jota, 23, said: “Atletico’s way of presenting their offer seemed serious to me.
“The financial offer was the same as the others. I liked how the club’s owner went about it.”

Ultimately the move did not pay off for Jota, who failed to make a single appearance for Diego Simeone’s side.
He was loaned out to Porto in 2016 and spent the following season at Wolves.
There, he scored 18 goals in 46 games to help them seal promotion to the Premier League.
Jota then made the move permanent in 2018 and went on to help Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves finish in seventh place two seasons running.

The form caught the eye of league champions Liverpool, as they signed the 23-year-old for £41million this summer.

Jota has since made 11 appearances, scoring seven goals, as he hit the ground running at Anfield.
He is loving life alongside star strikers Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, while he competes with Roberto Firmino for a place in the starting line up.
Jota said: “They are two world class players, we all know that quality, and it makes it easier for me to do my job because they are outstanding players.
“We played a great game together.”
