Arsenal announce first January transfer after snapping-up Omar Rekik, 19, as defender joins from Hertha Berlin

ARSENAL have confirmed the signing of teenage talent Omar Rekik from Hertha Berlin.
The Gunners have made the 19-year-old defender their first signing of the January transfer window for a fee reportedly worth around £500,000.

Emirates Stadium bigwigs attempted to recruit Rekik last summer but could not get a deal over the line before the October deadline.
A statement from the club read: “Omar Rekik has signed a professional contract with us and joins our Under-23s squad.
“The 19-year-old has joined us from Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin. Omar is a ball playing centre half who can play on both sides.
“Omar was born in the Netherlands and he has played internationally at youth level for Tunisia and the Netherlands. Throughout his youth career he also spent time at Feyenoord, Manchester City, PSV Eindhoven and Marseille.

“Everyone at Arsenal welcomes Omar to the club and we look forward to supporting his ongoing development.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes Rekik has the talent to go far in the game.
Speaking before the deal was confirmed, Arteta said: “He is a young talent that we have been following for a while that has a really bright future, but we will give more details when we can.”
Rekik had not made his senior debut for Hertha Berlin before travelling to north London.

He featured on the bench three times in the Bundesliga, however.
Rekik was a regular in the German fourth tier for Hertha’s B team, making eight appearances this term.
Arsenal academy coach Per Mertesacker has reportedly played a key part in bringing the rising star to the club.
Rekik could prove to be a versatile asset for the Gunners because he is comfortable playing at the heart of defence and in defensive midfield.

Arsenal have been trimming their senior defensive options in this transfer window.
Sead Kolasinac was loaned to Schalke until the end of the campaign before £27million hot prospect William Saliba agreed to join Nice for the rest of the season.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi have also been linked with exits after finding themselves on the fringes.

Folarin Balogun close to quitting Arsenal on free transfer and signing pre-contract with foreign club amid Arteta plea

FOLARIN BALOGUN is reportedly close to signing for a team abroad despite Mikel Arteta’s plea for the Arsenal striker to sign a new contract.
With his deal up at the end of the season, the 19-year-old is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside of England.

According to The Athletic, Balogun is on the verge of agreeing a move away from the Gunners in the summer.
Playing time is thought to be the youngster’s reason for leaving North London, and the club he first joined at the age of eight.
Arteta is yet to hand Balogun his full debut in the senior team, with just five outings off the bench in cup competitions this season.
Fans have been impressed by the glimpses of the striker, who has scored twice in Europa League runouts.

Speaking on Thursday, the Gunners boss insisted there is a clear path to the first-team for Balogun.
But he claimed the player’s agent is obstructing negotiations over a new contract.

Arteta told reporters: “You need three parties to make a deal.

“For sure, the club wants to make a deal, the manager wants to make a deal, the player wants to stay and I’m not sure about the agent.”
When pressed on whether Balogun’s agent is behind the stalemate, Arteta insisted the players’ best interest will be served by keeping him at the club.
The manager added: “I’m not saying he’s stopping [the deal].
“I’m saying that we need to find an agreement with him.
“We are negotiating with an agent, with a player that wants to stay at the club and we need to find an agreement.

We are doing everything we can to keep him here and hopefully from the other part they are doing the same.

“I’m telling you that we are doing everything we can to keep him here and hopefully from the other part they are doing the same.
“They defend the same interests, which is the players’ interest, which is to stay at the football club and be successful with us.”
Liverpool, Brentford and Sheffield United have previously been linked with Balogun, as well as Championship Swansea in a potential loan deal.

Arsenal ace Matt Macey set to join Hibernian in transfer today with Mikel Arteta desperate to trim down squad

ARSENAL ace Matt Macey is set to join Hibernian until the end of the season.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper will undergo a medical with the Scottish Premiership club later today, according to the Daily Mail.

Macey will solve the goalkeeping crisis at Easter Road after Dillon Barnes, who had been covering for injured No.1 Ofir Marciano, was recalled by QPR.
The switch to Hibs signals the end of Macey’s career at Arsenal as his contract was due to expire in the summer.
He slipped to third in the Emirates Stadium pecking order when Runar Alex Runarsson was signed from Dijon last year.
Macey joined Arsenal from Bristol Rovers for a compensation fee worth around £100,000 in 2013.

The Bath-born stopper had brief loan spells in League Two with Accrington Stanley and Luton Town before making his only two appearances for the Gunners in 2017.
He was loaned to Plymouth Argyle for the 2018/19 League One campaign and has spent the past two seasons warming the bench for Arsenal.
Macey will leave the Emirates Stadium with a FA Cup medal after being named in Mikel Arteta’s squad for last year’s final win against Chelsea.

Arsenal have been trimming Arteta’s squad in this transfer window.
Sead Kolasinac departed for former club Schalke at the end of December.
He was followed out the door by William Saliba, who has been loaned to Nice until the end of the season.

Arsenal could save nearly £1million a week if they offload more fringe men including Mesut Ozil, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi.
Ozil has reportedly reached an agreement to join Fenerbahce.
The Turkish club are odds-on favourites with the bookies to beat DC United to the transfer.

Arsenal worried Mesut Ozil will SNUB January transfer and pick up £8.75million wages plus loyalty bonus

ARSENAL fear they will be stuck with Mesut Ozil until the very last day of his contract despite him being linked with a January move.
The out-of-favour midfielder, 32, still has 25 weeks of his Gunners contract to run, which means he is due to collect £8.75MILLION between now and the end of June.

And the way his agreement is structured means he will also be due a hefty ‘loyalty bonus’ if he is still at the club when his huge £350,000-a-week deal expires.
All of which has convinced the Arsenal hierarchy that Ozil will hang around until he has collected every penny due to him.
Reports in Turkey claim Fenerbahce have agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the German worth £90,000 a week.
But the Super Lig club are £275m in debt and have already asked fans to donate towards their wage bill.

The £42.5m signing has also been linked with a move to join DC United in time for the new MLS season in March.
But Ozil’s agent Dr Erkut Sogut said: “His priority is to stay at Arsenal but things can change very fast in football and he might go, so we are checking all the options for this month and for the summer.”
It is nine months since Ozil last appeared for the Gunners and he has not even been registered to play in the Premier or Europa Leagues.
Ozil has now entered the final six months of his deal and is free to talk to clubs abroad, with clubs in the MLS and Turkey both linked with the ex-Real Madrid man.

Up until their mini revival over the festive period, Arsenal had struggled for form.
Some believed that could lead to Ozil coming back into the fold when Arteta names his 25-man squads for domestic competitions and the Europa League at the end of this month.
Arteta had also stated that the German would not be offered a golden handshake to walkaway from the club.
