Arsenal set to lose Folarin Balogun on free transfer at end of season as contract talks with 19-year-old striker stall

ARSENAL’S young star Folarin Balogun is set to leave the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer this summer with no sign of him agreeing a new deal.
The 19-year-old striker has netted twice in the Europa League this season but has found other first team opportunities hard to come by.

And now manager Mikel Arteta faces a dilemma with the England Under-20s man – play him or lose him.
With his contract up in the summer, Balogun has no intention of penning new terms while he remains on the sidelines, according to the Express.
With teams in Europe now able to snap him up on a pre-contract agreement, his days in a Gunners shirt could be numbered.

RB Leipzig are the frontrunners to snap him up, with the high-flyers joined by Bundesliga rivals set on securing one of England’s top young talents.
Balogun hinted at his frustration at the lack of opportunities when he tweeted a video of his hat-trick for the club’s Under-23s side against Brighton just after Arteta’s men crashed out of the FA Cup to Southampton.

The Gunners boss insisted in January the club are ‘doing everything’ to get Balogun to stay but pointed to the young star’s agent as throwing a spanner in the works.

Arteta said: “The club wants to make a deal, the manager wants to make a deal, the player wants to stay and I’m not sure about the agent.
“I’m telling you that we are doing everything we can to keep him here and hopefully from the other part they are doing the same and in the same interest, which is the player’s interest which is to stay at the football club and be successful with us.”
Balogun has made just five substitute appearances for Arsenal’s first team this season despite lighting up the scoring charts for the U23s.
Now it seems those first team opportunities may have to come elsewhere as clubs across Europe circle to snap him up for nothing.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City in three-way Achraf Hakimi transfer fight with full-back up for £35m from Inter Milan

CHELSEA, Arsenal and Manchester City are set for a transfer tussle for Inter Milan’s £35million full-back Achraf Hakimi.
The Moroccan star only arrived from Real Madrid last summer but a growing financial crisis at Inter may force the Italian giants to cash in.

⚽ Read our Chelsea live blog for the very latest news from the Bridge

Achraf Hakimi is wanted by Premier League trio Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City
Hakimi has reportedly been tipped by Arsenal scouts as a potential replacement for Hector Bellerin, while Chelsea are long-term admirers of the former Borussia Dortmund loanee.
Now Manchester City are hoping to trump their Premier League rivals in the summer, according to Calciomercato.
The 22-year-old has been one of the stars for Antonio Conte’s men this season as they sit just two points behind bitter rivals AC Milan at the top of Serie A.

The struggle for funds at Inter has seen them miss a payment instalment on the deal which took Hakimi from the Bernabeu and the Italians have been forced to agree a new deadline in March.
Now they could lose him altogether with the Premier League trio sensing an opportunity to secure one of the most highly rated young full-backs in world football.
Hakimi plays as a right wing-back for Inter in Conte’s 3-5-2 system, but can also play as a right back or on the left.

Born in Madrid to Moroccan parents – and boasting 32 caps for the African nation – Hakimi rose through the ranks at Real after joining them aged just eight.
It was at Borussia Dortmund, however, where he made his name, having joined on loan in 2018. His two seasons in the Bundesliga allowed Real Madrid to cash in, selling him to Inter for £35million.
With coronavirus plunging Inter’s balance sheet in the red, they are now vulnerable to a bid just a year later from the cash-rich Premier League sides. More

Arsenal’s transfer window business deserves credit with Arteta raising bank balance and morale by clearing out dead wood

THE day on which an Arsenal victory can take them sixth in the table will, for most fans, begin with a mental assessment of how the club performed in the January transfer window.
On 2 February 2021 are we better equipped to build on the positive momentum that the team’s form since Christmas has created? Here is my summary with the positives and negatives.

Ozil’s £350,000 wages were finally taken off the books with his move to Turkey

    Arteta’s cull has paid off

The club have managed, by a combination of sale, loan or tearing up of contracts to move on players that Arteta did not see in his plans, namely Ozil, Sokrtais, Mustafi and Kolasinac.
Whilst on a playing front and I suspect squad morale front this has to be seen as hugely positive, there does need to be a post-mortem on the huge financial losses made on these players, who came with large fees and are leaving for nothing.
Despite the financial write-off, these four players alone will probably reduce the wage bill by £650,000 a week.
This will place the club in a far stronger position for the summer window.
The addition of Matt Ryan on loan is shrewd business, after the hasty purchase of Runarsson in the summer.
Ryan is a far safer pair of hands as cover for the magnificent Leno and will allow the German rest weeks when the Europa recommences.
Sending Saliba out on loan again is a strange one. Arteta, for reasons many fans cannot fathom, does not feel the young French defender is ready for the rigours of the Premier League.
On the plus side he will play men’s football, but on the downside, it is not in England, and one worries whether the player’s relationship with the club might not be damaged. We won’t know until the summer.

An area identified and not rectified in the summer, having decided against utilising Ozil, was in the creative central area.
Having reverted to 4231 and tried Willian, Willock and Lacazette in the hole, Arteta has finally found joy with Smith-Rowe.
However, the young Englishman is inexperienced and has been injury prone, so the addition of Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid appears excellent business.

The Norwegian has far more top league experience and without huge financial outlay can share the creative load until the end of the season, when a more long-term decision can be made.
An under the radar positive after yesterday is that the young striker, so many supporters are pinning high hopes on, Folarin Balogun, who was free to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club during the window, has not done so. This gives Arteta and the club five months to convince the talented lad that his future lies in North London.

Sead Kolasinac joined Schalke on loan saving Arsenal £100,000 per week

Mustafi joined Ozil at the Emirates exit door
Of course, whilst there were many younger players being loaned or extending loans, there had been much speculation that younger first team squad members might also leave on loan.
Ultimately Nelson stayed but Maitland-Niles and Willock have both departed until the end of the season to WBA and Newcastle respectively.

Both have been promised regular first team action in their preferred positions and we hope they come back stronger to challenge or increase their value by performing.
Either way, on balance, if they were not going to play at Arsenal, these moves are positive.
The one negative to sending AMN on loan is that Arteta is depriving himself of a strong utility player, able to cover both fullback positions.
Arteta has stated at the beginning of the window that he wanted to bring in a proper left back cover for Tierney.
Bertrand and van Arnholt were talked of but nothing transpired. Cedric has covered admirably for the Scot on the left, but he is also pushing Bellerin to be first choice right-back.
If both Tierney and Bellerin were simultaneously injured Arteta could be left with a right footed left-back and Calum Chambers at right-back.
This is a concern and might be why Joel Lopez, only recently promoted to the Under 23s, trained with the first team yesterday.

With all the exits or loans, I think I am correct in saying that, with the exception of the aforementioned Balogun, none of the Arsenal first team squad who will feature between now and May have contract expiring this June.
This is true a positive and should make the summer slightly more straight-forward.
The January window has been about re-moulding the squad further into one that fits Arteta’s vision and plans.
The club is backing their man and in Edu he has a hard-working ally, growing into his technical director role and Arsenal will be in a far better negotiating position come the summer.
That position will be strengthened by European football and that challenge begins tonight again at Molineux. More

Arsenal outcast Ainsley Maitland-Niles wanted by West Brom in loan transfer as Sam Allardyce ‘pushes hard’ for full-back

ARSENAL are reportedly contemplating sending Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan to aid West Brom’s relegation fight.
The full-back has dropped back in Mikel Arteta’s plans since starring in last year’s FA Cup final and Community Shield triumphs.

Those displays helped earn the 23-year-old his first England caps but he has not started a league game that Arsenal would go on to win since the opening day of the season.
According to The Athletic, a loan move away could be on the horizon with West Brom very interested in a deal.
Maitland-Niles’ versatility, as an option in both midfield and defence, is said to be attracting Sam Allardyce.
The Gunners have reservations on dropping him in a survival scrap however, with the Baggies seven points from safety going into Saturday’s huge game against Fulham.

It is not the first time he has been linked with an exit, with Wolves said to be near a deal last summer before Arteta pulled the plug.
A team currently inside the top-four is also reportedly keen on Maitland-Niles yet they must complete other deals before turning their attention to the Arsenal academy product.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Leicester sit in the Champions League places ahead of the weekend, with the Foxes the most feasible team to be chasing Maitland-Niles.
Winger Demarai Gray is nearing a move away from the King Power and the top-four bidder is thought to be favoured by Arsenal.

Arteta has overseen a fresh overhaul of his squad in January, moving out five first-team players and signing two.

Trimming the defence has been of particular importance with Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba loaned out before Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ contract was cancelled.
The club are reportedly interested in bringing in a new left-back, a position Maitland-Niles has at times occupied.
A move for Ryan Bertrand has been touted with the Southampton star out of contract in June, but the deal is described as unlikely.
