But according to reports, the north Londoners have been pipped to his signature by Lyon.
L’Equipe claim the Ligue 1 side have already reached an agreement with the keeper, who is currently serving a nine-month suspension for a doping violation.
And they claim Lyon are set to bag the Cameroonian for a meagre fee of £6.8million.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will be seething if Lyon have indeed bagged Onana for such a nominal fee.
The Spaniard was reportedly keen on signing the Ajax academy graduate as a replacement for Bernd Leno.

It’s understood a number of clubs have made enquiries over Leno’s availability over the last few months.
Leno, however, insists he’s more than happy at the Emirates.
When asked about a potential move away from the club, the 25-year-old German told Sky Sports: “I am still happy at Arsenal.
“Arsenal is still a big club, a big name in the world and in the Premier League.
“There is nobody in the dressing room who says: ‘I want to leave the club, I am not happy here anymore.'”

Arsenal sign Ben White in £50m transfer from Brighton as England star is given William Saliba’s No4 shirt

BEN WHITE has completed his £50million transfer to Arsenal from Brighton. The Gunners announced the move on Friday afternoon with an elaborate announcement video.

White was pictured signing the deal alongside agent Alex Levack
It came just hours after a leaked picture of the England centre-back emerged online showing the 23-year-old being presented with an Arsenal shirt by Mikel Arteta and Edu.
White has taken William Saliba’s No4 shirt number with the Frenchman on loan at Marseille.
Arteta said: “Ben was a top target for us and it’s great that we’ve completed his signing.
“Ben has been educated with two very good clubs, Brighton and Leeds, in recent seasons.
“He has benefitted well from two very good coaching set-ups and has shown what a strong talent he is.
“Ben is an intelligent defender who is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and his style fits perfectly with us.
“And of course, he is still young, so his age and profile fits with what we are building here.
“We are all looking forward to Ben being central to our future long-term plans.”

Arteta has been chasing a new centre-back since David Luiz left on a free at the end of June.
The Arsenal chief has already signed left-back Nuno Tavares – suggesting Kieran Tierney could be in line for more minutes on the left of a central defensive three.
The Gunners chased the Brighton and England defender for much of the summer and had a £50m bid accepted earlier this month.
White agreed personal terms but the move was delayed by his late call-up into Gareth Southgate’s final England squad for Euro 2020.
An official announcement was further delayed by White’s post-tournament holiday, with the defender enjoying a break in Mykonos, Greece.
But he is now back in the UK and the move was announced on Friday afternoon. He was pictured putting pen to paper alongside his agent Alex Levack.
Arsenal technical director Edu said: “Ben has been a key target this summer. He has so many qualities which make us so excited he’s joining us.
“Ben’s a young English player with a great future. He’s very strong defensively, good on the ball with a great passing range.
“We’re delighted Ben’s signed and we look forward to him growing with us.”
White will join up with his new team-mates immediately and is in contention for selection for Arsenal’s Mind Series friendly at home to Chelsea on Sunday.
The defender – who is also capable of playing in midfield – bagged a spot in the Euro 2020 squad thanks to his red-hot Seagulls form last term.
That came off the back of a strong season on loan at Leeds a year earlier.

White earned his first two England caps in the warm-up games against Austria and Romania in June.
And although he was cut from Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad, the then-Seagull was given the nod to replace injured Trent Alexander-Arnold in the trimmed 26-man group.
However, White did not feature at the tournament, with John Stones, Harry Maguire and Tyrone Mings preferred by Gareth Southgate.

Arsenal urged to AVOID making transfer tilt for Aaron Ramsdale as legend Nigel Winterburn ‘has doubts’ over keeper

ARSENAL have been urged to swerve Aaron Ramsdale by Gunners legend Nigel Winterburn. The North Londoners are said to be considering a third bid of £18million – rising to £25m – for the Sheffield United keeper but iconic left-back Winterburn has ‘doubts’.

Mikel Arteta is said to be on the hunt for a new goalkeeper with Bernd Leno being heavily linked with a return to his native Germany.
Arsenal were previously linked with West Brom stopper Sam Johnstone but are now believed to have made Ramsdale, 23, their top target.
The Blades have reportedly rejected two previous offers from the Premier League club for the England Euro 2020 squad member.
But Winterburn has issued a warning to his old team about bidding again.
The 57-year-old told Genting Bet: “If I’m completely honest, I don’t think Ramsdale is a step up on Leno.
“He’s just not Arsenal’s solution for their No 1 goalkeeper.
“I watched him play several times last season. I just have my doubts and I don’t know why.
“And it’s a huge amount of money.”
The recently relegated Blades also face losing star midfielder Sander Berge.
Arsenal were also said to be keeping tabs on the Norwegian – with Atalanta and Napoli also keen.

But Blades boss Slavisa Jokanovic this week suggested neither Ramsdale or Berge, 23, are pushing for Bramall Lane exits.
The Serb said: “Of course I will be hurt if they go, because I do not detect any unhappiness from them.
“I do not feel, having worked and been around them, that they are unhappy to be here or with us.”

And talks with Lyon have already started, as the cash-strapped French side need to raise funds.
Guimaraes, 23, has been at Lyon for just 18 months after a £15m move from Athletico Paranaense in January 2020.
In that time he’s impressed with three goals in 46 appearances.
And Guimaraes’ fine form was rewarded with a debut Brazil cap in November.
Arsenal are now said to be targeting him after struggling to secure a deal for Locatelli.
The Sassuolo ace, who helped Italy to glory at Euro 2020, is Mikel Arteta’s top target this summer.
However, Juventus are also in the running for his coveted signature.
And Locatelli would prefer to stay in Serie A after proving doubters wrong.

Arsenal are now said to have opened talks with Lyon over a potential £30m deal for Guimaraes.
It’s reckoned the Gunners had been tracking him since his playing days in Brazil.
And with Lyon reportedly struggling to balance the books after losing Memphis Depay on a free transfer to Barcelona, they are open to doing business with Arsenal.

Chelsea preparing to slash £40m Tammy Abraham transfer price as Arsenal, West Ham and Aston Villa refuse to pay up

CHELSEA are preparing to slash their asking price for Tammy Abraham. That’s after struggling to find any clubs willing to pay £40million for the England star.

Arsenal, West Ham and Aston Villa have all shown an interest in snapping up the 23-year-old.
But they have made it clear they do not have the budget to meet the current valuation.
And the Blues are so keen to move Abraham on to help finance a bid for their own striker this summer they are now reluctantly having to consider reducing their demands by at least £5m.
The impact of the coronavirus pandemic has left clubs in the top flight and in Europe having to balance their finances.
And that has been evident to Chelsea in their attempts to offload the forward.
For buying clubs have made it clear they are unable to put together a package which would not only meet the fee but then come up with a wage deal to tempt the player to sign.
West Ham boss David Moyes has a strong interest in trying to piece together a deal.
COMPETITION: SPOT THE BALL TO WIN A CAR AND CASH

But he openly admits they cannot compete at the current asking price.
Ideally the Hammers would want the fee lowered to around £30m.
But they know if that happened then the Gunners could follow up their own interest in the striker sidelined by Thomas Tuchel last season.
