Arsenal warned James Maddison will cost £100m by Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers after Jack Grealish’s record transfer

BRENDAN RODGERS reckons he has his own £100million man in James Maddison. The Leicester boss thinks Maddison could be every bit as valuable to them as British record signing Jack Grealish is to Manchester City.

And with Arsenal rumoured to be lining up a summer swoop, Rodgers has warned it will take a similar offer to prise Maddison away from the King Power Stadium.
After beating City in the Community Shield, Rodgers said: “I think they are both close. They are both very talented players.

“Stylistically, I think they’re the same. They are both creators.
“But I would say they are both totally different. One is a dribbler – one commits people down the sides.
“James is more central and he’s more of a passer. So yes, they are both creative players but stylistically they are both very different.
“Everyone could see today how hard James works for the team, his quality and how he takes the ball. His eye for the last pass.
“He is a wonderful talent and I thought he was excellent tactically because they really challenge you in that respect. I thought he was brilliant.”
Rodgers, who is fending off the Gunners’ interest in Maddison, has backed his star to add to his single England cap this season.

He added: “James was unfortunate in that he suffered from a number of injuries which curtailed his progress last season.
“This will be a big year for him, trying to maintain that fitness – you need a little bit of luck with that as well.
“All he can do is play to the highest possible level for Leicester and see where it takes him.”

Arsenal fans reckon new signing Albert Lokonga is ‘better than Paul Pogba’ after impressive showing against Tottenham

ARSENAL fans are already hailing Albert Lokonga as ‘better than Paul Pogba’ after an impressive showing against rivals Tottenham. The 21-year-old was making only his second start for the Gunners following his £17million arrival from Anderlecht last month.

Lokonga made his debut on Wednesday during a friendly match with Watford at London Colney.
But his first real test came in the friendly clash with bitter rivals Spurs.
Although Arsenal fell to a 1-0 defeat, the midfielder passed his test with flying colours.

And fans took to social media to hail Lokonga, with some Gooners even comparing him to Manchester United’s World Cup winner Pogba.
One tweeted: “Lokonga seems to be absolute quality, love how he plays small passes in the box but hard to read so they actually work out extremely well.”
Another said: “Lokonga could be the difference between us having a decent season or a disastrous one.”
A third added: “Don’t want to sound dramatic. But Lokonga is levels above Pogba.”
Lokonga is one of three players Arsenal have signed so far this summer alongside defenders Ben White and Nuno Tavares.
The Gunners have still faced doubts for their lack of attacking reinforcements and Mikel Arteta was quizzed about whether the club will sign anyone else before the start of the new season.
He said: “What we have is what we have to maximise and worrying about things we don’t have at the moment, there’s no point.

“My energy is all on the players we have, to make them better and make them a bigger threat and win matches.”
Arteta also hinted that Newcastle are closing in on a £22million deal for midfielder Joe Willock.
The England Under-21 international midfielder was missing from the game against Spurs on Sunday despite training with the squad on Saturday.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta all but confirms Joe Willock’s £22m Newcastle transfer as he explains Spurs friendly snub

NEWCASTLE are closing in on a £22million deal for Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock. The England Under-21 international midfielder was missing from the Gunners’ final pre-season game against Spurs on Sunday despite training with the squad on Saturday.

And manager Mikel Arteta refused to explain his absence, stating: “We will tell you the reasons why Joe wasn’t in the squad when we can. When we can say more, I will let you know.”
Willock, 21, had a successful five-month loan spell at Newcastle last season and manager Steve Bruce is desperate to secure a permanent transfer.
And he is cautiously confident of sealing a deal before Sunday’s Premier League opener against West Ham as Arsenal look to bring in some cash.
Arteta was just as coy on his continuing pursuit of a new goalkeeper and said: “Again, I don’t know what will happen.
“We are training  with the players we have. We have come so far but there is a window that is still open.”
At least Arteta was able to welcome Bukayo Saka back for his first game since missing the decisive penalty in last month’s European Championship final defeat by Italy.
The 19-year-old winger was applauded onto the field by the Spurs fans when he came on as a second-half sub.
There was even a large banner at the players’ tunnel declaring: “North London stands with Bukayo Saka and all players against racism and discrimination.”

Son Heung-min scored the only goal of the game, filling to boots of training rebel Harry Kane.
Arsenal ended pre-season without a win with less than a week to go until their Premier League opener against Brentford on August 13.
Arteta’s men failed to beat Scottish duo Hibernian and Rangers, as well as losing to London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham.

Spurs are determined to hold on to Harry Kane although Manchester City are likely to make another offer for him.
The potential exit of England captain Kane would leave Tottenham needing to find a replacement.
And the Premier League club have joined rivals Arsenal in weighing up a move for Vlahovic.
The 21-year-old Serbia forward has attracted interest from clubs across Europe including Atletico Madrid and AC Milan.
Vlahovic scored 21 goals in 37 Serie A games last season and is being touted for a £50million move.
The former Partizan Belgrade striker was named the best young player in Serie A last season.

Arsenal are also interested in bringing him to the club although Vlahovic’s price tag could prove a stumbling block.
The powerful striker has scored two goals in his seven appearances for Serbia.
Fiorentina will not want to sell the rising star but may have to let him go if they receive a big offer this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have opened negotiations with the Gunners in a bid to bring Willock back to St James’ Park.
The Geordies are reportedly willing to pay £20million for the midfielder, who scored eight goals in 14 Prem appearances for them last term.
Willock is said to be manager Steve Bruce’s No1 transfer target this summer as the ex-Sunderland boss looks to keep Newcastle in the top flight.
It’s believed Arsenal are willing to let the player leave and are considering using him in player-plus-cash deal for Leicester star James Maddison.
Willock played 17 games in all competitions for the Gunners last season before his loan, having featured 44 times during the 2019-20 campaign.
Reports suggest Newcastle are also weighing up a move for Tottenham youngster Oliver Skipp.
The 20-year-old midfielder spent last season on loan at Norwich, making 45 Championship appearances to help the Canaries win the title.
And Newcastle are thought to be keen on Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe, with the Old Trafford club reportedly demanding a £5m loan fee.

Bruce’s team recorded an excellent 3-0 win against Premier League rivals Norwich in a friendly on Saturday afternoon.
Matt Ritchie’s second-half strike was followed by a brace from Dwight Gayle as the hosts entertained 20,139 fans inside St James’ Park.
Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season and a repeat of that feat will be considered a success due to their limited budget.

Arsenal ‘determined to seal Martin Odegaard transfer this month with Real Madrid ready to sell on permanent deal’

ARSENAL remain determined to sign Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid, according to reports. The 22-year-old impressed on loan with the Gunners last season and Mikel Arteta was hoping to come to a similar arrangement this term.

Real Madrid are understood to be willing to sell but only on a permanent dealCredit: Getty
Arsenal were initially told playmaker Odegaard would be staying put.
But Odegaard is said to be concerned about how many minutes he will get under new boss Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu.
And Los Blancos are now believed to be willing to let the Norwegian leave… however only on a permanent deal.
Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are said to be Ancelotti’s preferred midfield options.
Real have set their Odegaard asking price at £42.5million.
And, according to football.london, Arsenal reckon a deal is there to be done.
Madrid believe the midfielder does have a future at the club, but won’t rule out sanctioning a sale if the player asks to leave and a their valuation is hit.
The LaLiga giants are hopeful Odegaard decides to stay at Real, despite reports suggesting the player is unsettled.
An ongoing debate inside Real is whether Odegaard is ready to step up and stamp down a first team place, succeeding an ageing Modric.
Or whether the player isn’t up for the fight and is looking for a way out.
Real are preparing for massive changes at the club, in particular in the midfield.
Modric has just a year left on his current deal, and midfield partner Kroos is 31.
Midfield enforcer Casemiro is also almost 30, so Real are turning to 23-year-old Federico Valverde and possibly Odegaard to carry the torch when the time comes.
Although Arsenal are keen on Odegaard, Real are not willing to let the player leave on loan.

Odegaard has also failed to impress during Real’s pre-season fixtures, garnering criticism from the Spanish press for his performance in the loss to Scottish champions Rangers.
AS’ Tomas Roncero blasted: “Odegaard is the eternal promise. Surrounded by homegrown players, he should have said ‘here I am’.
“What is there to do? Like at Arsenal, do they all play for him? Martin, you are in Madrid. Wake up, macho.”
