Ten of 14 Arsenal players involved in Man City humiliation were at club under Wenger despite £420m transfer spending

TEN of the 14 flops involved in Arsenal’s humiliation at Manchester City were at the club under Arsene Wenger – despite more than £400million of investment.Legendary boss Wenger left the Emirates under a cloud after 22 years in charge when he was pushed aside.
Only Bernd Leno, Kieran Tierney, Cedric Soares and Martin Odegaard arrived post-Arsene Wenger and played at the Etihad – including the subs

But eight of his signings started the 5-0 thumping on Saturday.
And all three subs that came off the bench were Wenger additions, too.
Arsenal, however, have splashed out an eye-watering £420.2m on transfer fees in the three years since his departure under Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta.
A total of 24 different players have come into the Emirates – with seven separate loan arrivals and three on free transfers.
    CURRENT CROP
But only Bernd Leno, Cedric Soares, Kieran Tierney and Martin Odegaard played at the Etihad but were not part of the club when Wenger was in charge.
The rest of Arteta’s men have been with Arsenal for years.

And in front of them, 2018 arrival Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang led the line supported by academy graduates Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.
Another Hale Ender – Ainsley Maitland-Niles – came off the bench, as did long-term Gunners players Alexandre Lacazette and Mohamed Elneny, both signed by Wenger.
    AT THE CLUB
Ironically, all-but-one of the rest of the unused subs have arrived in the post-Wenger era.
New signings Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Aaron Ramsdale as well as Pablo Mari and Gabriel Martinelli were left on the bench by Arteta.

The other player was young goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who joined Arsenal at Under-9 level.
The likes of Thomas Partey, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes and Nicolas Pepe have all come in for big transfer fees in recent years but were ruled out of the City clash through injury or illness.
Elsewhere, Pablo Mari, Runar Alex Runarsson and Willian were not involved – with the latter likely not to play for the club again as he closes in on a free transfer to Corinthians in Brazil.
    BEEN AND GONE
But while plenty of the £420m worth of talent is still at the club, a large chunk has already been moved on.
Sokratis, Stephan Lichtsteiner and £2m loanee Denis Suarez came in during the 2018-19 campaign.

In the following season, David Luiz and Dani Ceballos are the two who came in and are no longer on the books, the Spanish midfielder having two loans from Real Madrid.
From last year, it is just Mat Ryan – who was on loan from Brighton – who moved on with three appearances for the Gunners.
    LOANED OUT
The last group of players are those who have signed for Arsenal in the last three years – but are currently out on loan.

And there are three of them – who cost the club a combined £61m.
William Saliba is with Marseille this season and still awaiting his senior Arsenal debut.

Arsenal flop Willian ‘agrees to join Corinthians on a free transfer’ with Gunners keen to offload £220,000-a-week wages

WILLIAN has agreed to join Corinthians on a free transfer, according to reports. The Brazilian, 33, only arrived at Arsenal last summer following his release from Chelsea.

But the Gunners are keen to offload his £220,000-a-week wages as soon as possible.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, the North Londoners will not receive a transfer fee for the winger, despite having two years left on his contract.
The journalist wrote: “After six days negotiations… Willian to Corinthians, agreement reached and here-we-go soon!
“Paperworks to be signed on Monday, last details to be sorted and then Willian will travel to Brazil to sign with Timão.
“Arsenal will let Willian leave on a free.”
In a fantastic gesture, it is understood Willian has agreed to rip up his contract rather than demanding a pay off, saving Arsenal around £20million.

He is set to take a pay cut of around 70 per cent by rejoining his boyhood club in his hometown of Sao Paulo.
Willian has been tipped for an exit throughout the summer after a disappointing debut campaign at the Emirates.
He managed just one goal in 37 appearances across all competitions.
And the forward – who has removed Arsenal from his Instagram profile – has not featured this season.
But he still managed to anger Gunners supporters by ‘liking’ a post from Chelsea celebrating their win over the Emirates side.
Manager Mikel Arteta admitted last week conversations are underway with Willian’s agent regarding a move.
He confessed earlier this month the transfer had not gone to plan.
The Spaniard said: “I think the expectations when we made the decision together to bring him to the football club, what he wanted to do coming here has not been fulfilled.

“It’s true that the context has not been the best for him. It’s been the most difficult year in football history for any football player.
“I think Willian is a player that needs to play happy, feel joy and feel the supporters and then express himself with the quality that he has.
“None of that has happened, the contrary as well. He found a difficult place for him and he’s not been comfortable with that and I think that’s why he’s struggled.”

Arsenal ‘will listen to transfer offers for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and will NOT stand in his way if he wants out’

ARSENAL will let skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leave if he wants to go and they get the right offer for him this summer. The Gabon striker, 32, failed to break the 20-goal mark for the first time in his three years with the club last season and his sale could raise useful funds for the out-of-sorts Gunners in the final days of the transfer window.

The Telegraph are reporting Aubameyang remains a key part of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s plans but is no longer considered “indispensable”.
The star bagged 15 goals last season compared to 29 and 31 in the two previous terms.
And with two years left on his deal the time could be right to cash in on a player who cost a then club-record £57million from Borussia Dortmund in 2018.
Barcelona and Manchester City are the bookies’ favourites to move for the £250,000-a-week striker if he becomes available but his wage demands could put other suitors off.
Arsenal have started the season with back-to-back 2-0 defeats to Brentford and Chelsea with Gunners youth team product Folarin Balogun and Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli, both 20, failing to find the net.
Aubameyang missed both games after a bout of coronavirus and the striker position is a pressing area for Arteta to address, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah both in the final year of their contracts.

Lacazette, 30, and Nketiah, 22, could also leave before the August 31 deadline, with the latter more likely to go due to his lower wage demands and age.
The North London club are expecting a busy week as they look to rejig a squad which has made such a lacklustre start to the campaign.
They have signed Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares for a combined cost of about £125m this summer, and an Aubameyang exit would help fund further rebuilding.

Arsenal’s worst XI of the 21st Century includes Francis Jeffers, Gervinho and one of Mikel Arteta’s current squad

ARSENAL are a great club and poor players do not tend to play for it. It is more a case of players not quite being at the level we as fans expect, hope for, or indeed have been used to.
The ex-Chelsea winger is one of many Brazilians in the team

With regards to my rules when determining Arsenal’s worst XI of the 21st Century – a player must have played a minimum of 10 Premier League matches to qualify for consideration.
This rules out failed signings that never truly played enough for us to judge.
Secondly, the formation of the 11 will be 4-2-3-1, simply because it has been the predominant set up this century.
Arsenal fan Dave Seager tells us below as he picks his very own team of North London flops:
    GK: Vito Mannone
Since Jens Lehmann, Arsenal have not covered themselves in glory in this position with no goalkeeper truly getting close to the German Invincible or Seaman’s consistency.
Of the average bunch I think Vito Mannone was the most disappointing, and the level of his career post 15 matches in seven years at the club probably bears this out.

    RB: Nelson Vivas
Many might shout Emmanuel Eboue, wrongly, or even Stephan Lichtsteiner after one awful season but I am opting for Nelson Vivas.
I do so because in 2000 and 2001 as a full and regular Argentina international he was unable to edge out a 37-year-old Lee Dixon. Something a central midfielder Lauren was able to do when Vivas left.

    LB: Andre Santos
In all honesty, this position has been a strong one for Arsenal for as long as I can remember with one notable exception.
When the roll call for the century is Silvinho, Cole, Clichy, Gibbs, Monreal and now Tierney, only Andre Santos can be given this dubious honour. Enough said!
CB: Igor Stepanovs and Sebastian Squillaci
There have been many that have not quite been able to follow the likes of Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure – and many have tried.
Of all the candidates, Philippe Senderos, Johan Djourou, William Gallas, Thomas Vermaelen, Pascal Cygan might stick their hands up but Igor Stepanovs and Sebastian Squillaci are easily the worst for me.
They have 121 international caps between them too!
    RDM: Gio van Bronckhorst
This is one of the most difficult areas for me because truth be told we have had so much quality over the past 21 years that whoever I pick it will be a harsh one.
The easier of the two is Gio van Bronckhorst simply because for such a talented player he never managed to do what he was signed to do, which was to replace Emmanuel Petit as Patrick Vieira’s partner.
His career at Arsenal was marred by injury but when fit he was often utilised as a left-back and failed to rival Ray Parlour for the position he was signed for.
    LDM: Denilson
Alongside Gio, whilst it pains me to do it, I will have to opt for Denilson.
It may seem harsh given the young Brazilian played over 150 games for Arsenal, but he never really made the shirt his own and his demise post leaving speaks volumes.
Arsenal fans failed to see the best of Gervinho during his two years at the EmiratesCredit: Getty
    LW: Gervinho
Again a position graced by Marc Overmars, Robert Pires, Antonio Reyes, Samir Nasri, Andrei Arshavin, Santi Cazorla, Alexis Sanchez and even Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang since the turn of the century, this position has been pivotal for Arsenal.
Sadly, the gap and the blip came post-Nasri when Arsene Wenger invested in the wrong player from Lille. Gervinho shone in France with Eden Hazard and starred again in Italy. He singularly failed to shine or star in North London.
    RW: Willian
After all the initial excitement, followed by seven seasons and seven loans Joel Campbell should have walked into my team but of course, that was before Willian.
I have no idea what became of the Brazilian that played for Chelsea but no one has stunk quite like our £200k a week flop.
    CAM: Julio Baptista
The second striker role I have given to Julio Baptista. After banging in goals for fun at Sevilla, Real Madrid beat Wenger and Arsenal to the Brazilian’s signature in 2005.
Despite scoring 11 for the Spanish giants, he was allowed to leave on loan for the 2006/7 season and I along with most of the Arsenal faithful was super excited.
I needn’t have been because he was a shadow of the player we all hoped for, managing only three goals in 23 league appearances. A massive disappointment.
Francis Jeffers failed to make the grade at Arsenal after his early promise at EvertonCredit: Getty
    ST: Francis Jeffers
There have been many strikers who have not quite made the grade at Arsenal in the 21st Century and there is even talk of a curse on the Number 9 shirt.
Marouane Chamakh gets bad press but actually began like a train before falling under the huge shadow of an imperious RVP and Lucas Perez failed to breakthrough.
However, for the sheer fall from grace and failure to deliver on early promise at Everton, my striker can only be Francis Jeffers.
He has the chance to partner the greatest striker the league had seen between 2001 and 2004 but failed to force himself past either Nwankwo Kanu or Sylvain Wiltord for the honour.
