Arsenal player ratings: Bukayo Saka runs the show but Jakub Kiwior fails to fill Gabriel’s big shoes

SET pieces were crucial AGAIN but Arsenal lost more ground in the title race after coming back from behind to draw 1-1 with Fulham. The Gunners thought they’d won it at the death but are now SIX points behind Prem leaders Liverpool, after enduring a frustrating afternoon at Craven Cottage.Other corner, another goal as William Saliba equalised early into the second halfFulham went 1-0 up early after latching onto a loose ball with a quick counterArsenal dominated the early exchanged but saw themselves 1-0 down early thanks to Raul Jimenez’s spell-bounding run and finish inside 11 minutes. The visitors had plenty of the possession, but very little to show for it in the opening 45 minutes.Mikel Arteta was booed at half-time, but unlike last year’s defeat at Craven Cottage he held off on any substitutions at the break.Another successful corner routine saw the Gunners level after William Saliba poked home from six-yards five minutes after half-time.READ MORE ON ARSENALAnd heartbreak ensued in the 89th minute when Bukayo Saka’s back post header was ruled out after Martinelli strayed offside in the build up.Here SunSport’s Katherine Walsh gives her player ratings…David Raya – 6 Couldn’t do much about his one-on-one with Jimenez and was rarely threatened after that.Until a HUGE save at his near post in the 71st minute after Sander Berge’s ball over the top sent Andreas Pereira away. Most read in FootballDavid Raya was left vulnerable for Jimenez’ openerThomas Partey – 5Arteta opted to play Partey at right-back but, it quickly became clear just how missed the Ghanaian’s presence was in midfield.William Saliba – 6 Great positioning and a lengthy VAR check saw him tap in the equaliser from a back-post Havertz’s header. Yes, from another corner.Couldn’t get back in time to stop Jimenez’s opener. Could he have done more?Jakub Kiwior – 4 Terrible afternoon filling into Gabriel’s big shoes. Easily outmanoeuvred by Raul Jimenez’s inside run for the Fulham No.9’s sleek low finish opener inside 11 minutes.Seemed out of place and not sure of his role during corner routines.Raul Jimenez rang a ring around Kiwior for Fulham’s early openerJurrien Timber – 5 Undoubtedly a greater influence on the right side of defence.Timber was quiet by his standard and was dragged narrow for Jimenez’s opener.Martin Odegaard (c) -Looked like he was struggling with something in the first half-an-hour as he hunched over, and hobbled off while walking inside at half-time after being on the end of a big tackle from Sander Berge. Some harmless balls into the Fulham box went well past Trossard as Arsenal looked somewhat rattled after going 1-0 down.Replaced by 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri when Arsenal were looking for a winner.Jorginho – 6 Largely did his job in nullifying Emile Smith Rowe before the Arsenal youth academy star was replaced inside 60 minutes. But some wayward long balls saw a frustrated Arteta turn away in the opening half.Declan Rice – 6 Some lovely runs between the centre-backs in his bid to push forward to level the score. Didn’t stop running and linked up well with Saka and Odegaard. But had to bail out the makeshift left hand side of Timber and Kiwior out a couple of times and lethal from corners.Bukayo Saka – 7Every time you look at the TV, Saka was crossing. Great corners from the right hand side.Grew into the game with both Robinson and Bassey working hard to team up on him, soon sat them both down with an outrageous run.Such a menace from the right but Robinson finally went in the book in the final five minutes.Kai Havertz – 6Out-duelled by Diop for much of the first half and rarely tested former Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno in his 73 minute appearance.Poor sense of positioning at times to get onto some good crosses from his Saka and Trossard. But made up for it in the second half, with a brilliant back post run from Rice’s corner which inadvertently set up Saliba.Kai Havertz failed to threaten Fulham keeper LenoHavertz headed down into the path of goalscorer SalibaLeandro Trossard – 6 An unbelievable piece of skill saw him bamboozle former Gunner Iwobi but his stunning cross was fumbled by Saka.More of a threat in the second-half before he looked disappointed to be subbed off for Gabriel Martinelli. SubsG Jesus (’73 for Havertz) – 4 Indecisive as Rice pinged a ball over the top for his run, which eventually landed in Leno’s waiting hands.Gabriel Martinelli (’60 for Trossard) – 6Disastrously aught offside in the lead up to Saka’s would-be winner in the 89th minute. But worked better with Timber than Trossard perhaps managed. Tricky feet saw him fouled several times by Kenny Tete in final 15 minutes.Sent multiple great crosses from the left, but Leno was often up to collect.Booked for dissent as he bounced the ball in frustration at not being awarded a throw in. READ MORE SUN STORIESMikel Merino (’73 for Jorginho) – 5Should’ve been booked for a tug on Pereira. E Nwaneri (’78 for Odegaard) – 6 Brave runs in his 15 minute cameo. ‘If we want to be all-time great defenders, we HAVE to win some trophies’ – Arsenal ace Saliba makes brutal admission

WILLIAM SALIBA wants to join the pantheon of Arsenal greats with his centre-back partner Gabriel. But the Frenchman knows they cannot get there without laying their hands on the sort of silverware lifted by legendary figures of the club’s past.William Saliba and Gabriel Malaghaes are considered by many to be the best defenders in the Premier LeagueCredit: GETTYThe pair have played a significant role in Arsenal’s recent title challengesCredit: GETTYBut the Frenchman insists neither nor Gabriel will be considered true greats unless they win a titleCredit: GETTYMan mountains Saliba, 23, and 26-year-old Gabriel have been at the heart of Arsenal’s quest for silverware.Without doubt, they have all the hallmarks of some of the best defenders in Arsenal’s rich history. The power and athleticism of Sol Campbell, the leadership and aura of Tony Adams, the tenacity and hunger of Martin Keown. The duo are also huge figures away from the pitch, involved in numerous “Arsenal in the Community” projects, embracing their positions as role models and inspirers.READ MORE ON ARSENALBut when it comes to trophies, that is where the comparisons stop.Former captain Adams is the only man in English football to win league titles in three different decades — in 1989, 1991, 1998 and 2002 — and is immortalised in bronze outside the Emirates.Adams, now 58, won the title alongside the Steve Bould in ’98 then Campbell and Keown in 2002, while the latter two played an integral part in Arsenal’s 2004 Invincibles campaign. This current golden partnership needs to achieve similar feats to make the history books. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSSaliba said: “If we want to be all-time great defenders, where everyone remembers us, we have to win some trophies.“We haven’t done it yet but we will give everything to achieve that.”Meet Ayden Heaven: Arsenal’s next William SalibaSaliba made a £27million move from Saint-Etienne as a teenager in 2019 but spent time on loan with Nice and Marseille before forming a strong bond with Brazilian Gabriel — who also cost £27m from Lille in 2020 — once Mikel Arteta paired them together at the start of the 2022-23 season.Saliba added: “Since the day I first played with him, I’ve enjoyed every game.“He’s a massive, massive defender that is so good in every aspect.”After falling short in the last two seasons – twice pipped to the title by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City – this campaign has called for a new type of challenge.Arteta’s men trail leaders Liverpool by seven points after 14 games ahead of today’s trip across London to face Fulham. And Saliba insisted: “Everything is possible.“The season is very long and we’ve experienced that in the past two seasons. We just have to focus on ourselves.“We are still only in December so there are still a lot of things that can happen.“We can improve but Mikel helped give us a lot of confidence.”Raised in the north-eastern Paris suburb of Bondy, Saliba – who started out his football career as a striker -idolised another Gunners great, Thierry Henry, as a youngster. He even had the name of the club’s all-time leading scorer, who netted 228 times for Arsenal, printed on the back of his shirt.Yet, growing up, Saliba admits he never got to meet any of his footballing heroes. And that is something that has inspired him in his work with Arsenal in the Community.Saliba recently gave up his time to join a group of year three children at Ashmount Primary School in Islington, less than two miles from the Emirates.Arsenal are rooted in and fuelled by the local community and Saliba – along with the entire Gunners’ squad – has embraced that.Away from the pressures and intensity of a title race, he spent the day answering questions and joining a reading class with the kids, as well as taking part in a kick-around before being mauled with hugs and high-fives.Saliba said: “When I was younger, I didn’t have that chance so now I am happy to give back and do it now. I know what we can give to the kids.“We’ve all been in their place when we were young. We know that when you love football, we want to see some football players like us.“From day one, I could see that we do a lot of things in the community with the kids.”I like these type of things a lot and it’s really good to give back and be connected with our local community.“We are so happy to be involved in this type of project. Their support is a huge inspiration for us and we take it with us every time we go on to the pitch.”Arsenal’s No 2 keeper Neto – who is yet to make an appearance for the club since signing on loan from Bournemouth in the summer – was alongside Saliba at the community event. The Brazil international, 35, said: “It’s massive as football is about community and passion.”The community is who keeps this sport so passionate and I like that.READ MORE SUN STORIES“When we do these things for the kids it’s so nice, we can remember our own times when we had the opportunity to stay close with players, it’s a dream come true for the kids.“I’m a father as well and when we have those connections to the areas, it’s much better.” More

Chelsea sign 15-year-old son of Arsenal cult hero with teenager playing at age groups well above his own

CHELSEA have landed one of the country’s top 15-year-olds.And if he goes on to emulate his dad – a true cult hero for Arsenal – then luring him from Watford will have been worth it.Mathis Eboue joins Chelsea after a rapid rise at WatfordCredit: InstagramDad Emmanuel Eboue, bottom left, was with Arsenal for seven yearsCredit: GettyMathis Eboue, an attacking midfielder, shone for the Hornets all the way up to under-21 level. And his move across London is another example of how Chelsea are looking to recruit so many of the nation’s leading starlets for their academy.Eboue Junior has also played three times of England U-16s.In fact, he hit the only goal as the Lion cubs beat France to win the U16 Challenge Trophy in Spain two months ago.READ MORE ON CHELSEABut of course whatever he’s achieved at such a young age can’t compare with what his father did over a 15-year career.Emmanuel Eboue, now 41, earned 79 caps for Ivory Coast, mainly at right-back.But his peak fame came with Arsenal from 2004-2011.Legendary then-boss Arsene Wenger recruited the pacy ace from Belgians Bevern. Most read in FootballFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSAnd although Eboue took two seasons to become something like a regular, his bubbly nature and bursting runs made him a talk of the terraces. However, at one stage he was booed by Gunners’ supporters.I was sacked as a factory worker, the next day I had trials at Arsenal – I was gobsmackedAnd just last month he recalled: “I got back home and I was crying. “But the same week some of the fans came to the club to say sorry to me about that. How Mikel Arteta’s unstoppable ‘chaos creator’ corner routine can help win Arsenal the Premier League

CALL them Stoke 2.0 all you like but Mikel Arteta’s set-pieces feel unstoppable right now with specialist coach Nicolas Jover pulling the strings. With a staggering 30 goals from set-plays since the start of last season and more than a fifth of their goals this year coming from corners, they could be key to Arsenal winning the title.Arsenal are becoming the kings of corner kicksCredit: RexHere, our tactical expert Dean Scoggins — from SunSport YouTube show Tactics Exposed — dissects why the Gunners are so dangerous from corners and the secrets behind their success…1) THREE Ts — TRIGGER, TIMING AND TRAJECTORYTHE precision is incredible. There’s the hand up from Declan Rice or Bukayo Saka to begin the routine. From there, a two-second pause gives the ‘train’ lined up at the back post time to run into position. Then it’s about the trajectory of the ball. Rice favours it flatter to the front post, whereas Saka hits it higher and more to the back and middle.READ MORE IN football Declan Rice only has two seconds to put his hand up to signal deliveryThe trajectory of the cross is key for Arsenal2) THE JIGSAW PUZZLEALL the pieces have to come together for Arsenal — and everyone in the area has a role. The players beyond the back post make their moves to the front post — and they mix it up to confuse defenders. But they slot into gaps between the defenders, one in between each line… to complete the jigsaw. This means that, if the man at the front post is beaten, Arsenal have a ‘jumper’ before every other defender — making it virtually impossible for the opposition to see or stop. Most read in FootballJurrien Timber’s goal against Manchester United came from this exact move.Arsenal slot into the gaps perfectly3) CHAOS CREATORTHE Gunners have a free man at every corner.United tried to create a ‘forcefield’ around the keeper to stop Arsenal’s trick of blocking him.The new chaos creator ran across the eyeline of the keeper, making him think twice about coming off his line.Often, one player runs to the front post first to nudge the first defender under the ball — freeing up the ‘jigsaw jumpers’ to score.Kai Havertz is the ‘chaos creator’4) HOW DO YOU STOP IT?IT is very difficult. United had a good plan, two players at the front post to stop one of them being muscled out by a blocker. However, the players didn’t do their job. Bruno Fernandes got sucked under the ball and Rasmus Hojlund was too far outside of the line of the post, so both of them were redundant.I’d like to see a centre-back — or dominant centre-forward — occupy the front post and not leave the zone!My advice for defenders — start on the post, literally touching it, and attack the ball. Don’t wait for it.Man Utd had two men on the front post5) PLAYING FOR CORNERS!ONE way to stop it, of course, is to not concede corners. Back in the era of Rory Delap’s long throws at Stoke, we saw Hull keeper Boaz Myhill kick the ball out for a corner rather than face a hurl into the box.But Arsenal create lots of opportunities to win corners. READ MORE SUN STORIESOne, slightly risky, tactic — would be to allow crosses from wide, backing centre-backs and goalkeepers to deal with those better.Just don’t ‘do a Rashford’ and concede unnecessary corners which inevitably mean goals!Marcus Rashford gave away a corner trying to flick the ball up to boot awayCredit: Sky SportsThe mistake resulted in the corner that Arsenal scored fromCredit: Sky Sports More

‘Sit down.. childish,’ Roy Keane fumes at Ian Wright and slams ‘f***ing rubbish’ Man Utd star in Arsenal game watchalong

Hooked at half-time for the far more threatening Amad.MANUEL UGARTE – 5Another one who was booked in the first half, he failed to establish any kind of presence in the game and on the ball, looked pretty woeful.Cleared a Joshua Zirkzee header off of his own line to stop Arsenal from doubling their lead early in the second half.BRUNO FERNANDES – 4This game was crying out for Bruno Fernandes to stamp his authority on it, and it seemed he just couldn’t quite get his foot on the ball to do so.Played a deeper role today, next to Ugarte, which meant we didn’t see any of his attacking spark.MASON MOUNT – 3Mason Mount at right wing was an experiment tried and failed at Chelsea, which Amorim tried again tonight. He was often lost in the half-space, meaning he was essentially useless going forwards. Hooked in the second half after a fairly abysmal showing.ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 5A very quiet first half, only brightened by one half-decent cross, was met by a second half where he was quickly subbed for Marcus Rashford.Quiet.RASMUS HOJLUND – 6Battled well with the physical presence of William Saliba early on, but his side failed to create him any kind of chances.Cut a frustrated figure for most of the match, and rightly so. There will be no point signing Gyokeres if they can’t create anything for him to score.SUBSAMAD (TYRELL MALACIA, HT) – 5Was more direct and definitely an improvement on Malacia, albeit on the opposite flank. However, still wasn’t able to be the difference which Ruben Amorim would’ve been looking for in this one.MARCUS RASHFORD (MASON MOUNT, 72) – 5Having been electric on the whole under Amorim, he wasn’t able to provide any kind of spark against an opponent which has been one of his favourites in recent years.JOSHUA ZIRKZEE (ALEJANDRO GARNACHO, 72) – 4After an impressive display last time out, he failed to offer anything to his side going forward today. The closest he came to scoring was a dangerous header which almost saw him get an own goal on the scoresheet.LENY YORO (HARRY MAGUIRE, 72) – 6Looks like a pretty good defender on the whole, a tough game for a young centre-back, but he didn’t look out of place whatsoever.ANTONY (RASMUS HOJLUND, 79) – 5Played his part in a clever free-kick routine at the end of the game, before fluffing his lines and finding the gloves of David Raya.
