El Nacional claims Torres was the subject of a shock bid from Arsenal at the end of the summer transfer window.
Mikel Arteta was on the hunt for another versatile forward to boost his attacking options.
And he targeted Torres after the Spain international dropped down Barca’s pecking order.
Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Ousmane Dembele have started the season as Xavi’s preferred trio.

Meanwhile, Memphis Depay and Ansu Fati are also pushing for minutes.
And Arsenal received encouragement to move for Torres from those behind the scenes at the Nou Camp.
However, Xavi stepped in to ensure Torres was not sold last-minute.
The tactician had already lost striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Chelsea.

And he was not prepared to lose Torres just six months after his £47.5m switch from Man City.
Had the winger joined Arsenal for £26m, it would have seen Barca record a huge loss.
Torres scored seven goals in 26 games and Xavi had been impressed with his impact.
But with money tight in the Catalan capital, Arsenal felt confident to test the waters with an offer.

And Arteta may be wondering if he should have pursued other avenues after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend. More

A hat-trick from Dwight Yorke and goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham helped United romp to victory over their title rivals.
Keane also got on the scoresheet that afternoon, which ranks highly in his memories of the once iconic fixture.
He said: “Obviously we hammered them 6-1 (Feb 2001), Arsenal made changes, new players at the club who hadn’t settled and we took full advantage.
“Yorkey was in his prime there, brilliant player.”

Keane, however, admits United were aided by Arsene Wenger’s team – which won the double the following season – being a work in progress.
He continued: “The 6-1 was pretty good but to be fair to Arsenal, they weren’t at their strongest so I don’t want to be too harsh on them.”
Keane has fond memories of the fixture, which was once pivotal to the destiny of the Premier League trophy, so much so he’d come out of retirement to play the Gunners one last time.
He said: “Obviously when I was playing, Arsenal were a very good team, big personalities, a lot of players that were probably disliked, I was against Patrick [Vieira] in midfield.

He has found that, featuring in all six league games – with Marseille also offering him to chance to play in the Champions League starting with the trip to Tottenham on Wednesday.
But Tavares is baffled by Arsenal refusing to include the option to make his Marseille loan permanent, should the French club wish to do so.
In an interview with RMC Sport he said: “At Arsenal, I do not know if it was a problem of competition with Kieran Tierney, but for me, that’s not even the point.
“I came to Marseille to finally be able to play in my position. When signing with OM, I wanted to have an option to buy, but Arsenal refused. With my agents, we always wanted this purchase option, but Arsenal didn’t.

“Now I’m at OM, and with or without an option, I’m happy. At Arsenal, I would have probably only played in the cup.
“I came to Marseille to play in my position, in the Champions League, in the league and in the cup. Marseille gave me this opportunity.”
Tavares is making the most of his newfound game time and has already scored three goals in his six appearances.
The Portuguese shocked Gooners with a screamer on his debut, with his latest goal coming in the 3-0 win over Nicolas Pepe’s OGC Nice.

Tavares scored just once in 28 Arsenal appearances last term but was allowed to leave following the signing of Oleksandr Zinechnko.
And with the Ukrainian set to battle Kieran Tierney for the left-back role, Tavares cannot understand why he was held back from leaving permanently.
Tierney revealed he is relishing the competition for his place in a sly dig at Tavares which suggested the youngster was not good enough to challenge him for a place in the team.
The Scot said: “At a club like Arsenal, you need competition.
“For where we want to go, you need at least two players for each position. He [Zinchenko] is a great signing.” More

Fans not impressed as Arsenal wear ‘basic £10 Adidas grey socks’ vs Man Utd

However, their kit man was forced into action after it emerged their black socks would clash with United’s, which were the same colour.
That led to Arsenal instead lining-up in grey and black socks – and eagle-eyed supporters soon realised that they were just standard Adidas ones rather than official club ones.
They featured the sport manufacturers logo on the front rather than the back.
Footy Headlines then claimed that they were the Adidas Adi Sock 21 model, which retail at £13, but can also be bought for around a tenner.

One fan did point out that they had been worn before – although it was goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale that has donned them previously.
However, those that noticed soon took to Twitter to take the mick out of the sock mishap.
One wrote: “Those Arsenal socks look like white socks that’ve been in the washing machine with the dark laundry too often.”
Another said: “Arsenal socks not even original.”

While a fellow supporter commented: “The arsenal away kit is one of the nicest they’ve ever had, but those grey socks are so ugly.”
Arsenal’s mood soon turned to black as they were left fuming when VAR ruled out an opener from Gabriel Martinelli.
United new boy Antony then broke the deadlock just before half time but the Gunners equalised through Bukayo Saka – despite him having a number of noticeable holes in his socks.
But a double from Marcus Rashford sealed a 3-1 victory for United as they inflicted a first defeat of the season on Arsenal. More

Gary Neville pinpoints EXACT moment Arsenal threw away chance of beating Man Utd at Old Trafford

GARY NEVILLE said Arsenal’s triple substitute against Manchester United cost them the game at Old Trafford. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta brought on Emile Smith Rowe, Fabio Vieira and Eddie Nketiah on with just over 15 minutes to go.

Martin Odegaard, Sambi Lokonga and Oleksandr Zinchenko all gave way for the change.
But three minutes later, United went on a counter attack which was finished off by Marcus Rashford for 3-1.
Looking back on the triple sub, Neville it was a “kitchen sink” moment for Arsenal, which left his team exposed.
The United legend argued with around 20 minutes to go, and the away side playing better, they had time to get back into the game.

But the decision to take three players on left Arsenal out of shape and later two goals down.
United’s new £85million signing Antony opened the scoring before half time to cap off a perfect debut.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka desperate to toast birthday by continuing winning run at Man Utd and keeping top spot

BUKAYO SAKA has one big wish ahead of his 21st birthday on Monday. On Sunday at Old Trafford, Manchester United stand in the way of Arsenal continuing their perfect start to the season — and Saka being able to fully enjoy his latest milestone.

The Arsenal and England star said: “I’m  looking forward to my 21st for sure. The perfect present would be a win over United.”
Saka is such a key player for club and  country — and has had so many ups and downs with both, it’s hard to believe he is so young.
He laughed: “I don’t feel like I’ve been around for ages! I feel I still have a long way to go in terms of my development.
“I’ve played some important matches and a lot of matches, which has accelerated my learning but there’s still a lot more to learn.”

Life has changed beyond recognition for Saka in a few short years.
In a scene from the All Or Nothing Amazon documentary that followed Arsenal’s 2021-2022 campaign, he told team-mates about being  spotted in a supermarket despite doing his best to conceal his identity.
Saka said: “You just learn to adapt. It’s become part of my life.
“Things I could do before, or places I could go without being recognised, I can’t really do it.

“It’s part of the job, my dream job, so I’m not going to get sad about it.
“What do I miss most?  Being able to go to Nando’s, you know what I’m saying, to sit inside, just like normal.”
In many ways, Saka IS a normal young man of his age, interested in music, fashion and hanging out with his friends.
But at the same time he is also the poster boy of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal revolution.

Saka became the first player born in the 21st century to appear in the Premier League when he came on against Fulham in January 2019.
But it was in the following, turbulent season —  after Arteta replaced Unai Emery in December — that Saka’s career took off.
He said: “When I came in, it wasn’t easy. There were quite a few ups and downs. I learnt to understand that is football.
“It was the same at the start of last season, when we lost the first three games.  This time we have won the first five.”
Saka and Arsenal have come a long way in the last year. One of the best scenes in the Amazon series featured Saka meeting young Gunners fan Teddy.
The Isle of White schoolboy, 7, sent a letter of support — and his pocket money — to his idol after he was racially abused for failing to convert a penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout.

Saka is shown surprising Teddy while he was on a tour of the Emirates, then having an ice cream and a kickabout, just as the youngster had spoken about in his heartfelt message.
Saka said: “For the kid to do that for me, it means he values me a lot and I mean a lot to him.
“For me to do something back is the least I could do. I’m glad he had a good time.  I remember being that kid looking up to people — but I never sent anyone my pocket money.”
Of the three England players racially abused for missing penalties in the Euros final, Saka bounced back the strongest last season.
While United pair Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford struggled for form and lost their England places, the young winger was Arsenal’s top-scorer with 11 Prem goals.
One of them was a well-taken, pressure  penalty in a 3-1 win over the Red Devils the last time the sides met back in April.
Arsenal star Bukayo Saka is one of the brightest young talents in the Premier LeagueCredit: Getty
At a day short of 21, Saka is too young to remember when clashes between the two clubs were the main events of the domestic season — virtual or actual title deciders.
But he is crystal clear how crucial it is for the Gunners to play those kind of matches again.
Saka said: “It’s very important. It’s what the club deserves and where the club belongs.
“Of course, the United fans and players will be feeling the same.
“It’s a special rivalry. I’ve seen the games from before, with the big tackles and the fighting.”
After Arsenal’s five wins over teams who will not be challenging for Champions League  qualification, the trip to Old Trafford is the chance to lay down a significant marker.

Saka said: “It’s a very big thing because United are a quality team and in good form now.  If we can go there and win it will give us a lot of confidence going forward.”
Looking further into the future, Saka has made positive noises about signing a new deal.
After helping the club rebuild, he wants to be part of bringing back the glory days.
Saka said: “That’s my goal. We’re in a good place right now.
“The next step for us is to try to bring some trophies, win more big games and play at the highest level.”
Could he see himself staying at Arsenal for life? Becoming a Gunners legend like Thierry Henry and being immortalised in bronze outside the Emirates?

Saka said: “There’s not many people who can say they’re an Arsenal icon or have a statue outside the stadium.  So the answer to your question is definitely yes.”
Gunners chief Arteta, meanwhile, says sticking to your guns and being trusted to make big calls are crucial to reviving a fallen giant.
He said: “For me, it’s about being consistent. So when you try to bring an idea, you have a vision and you share that vision with the club.
“We stick together, we believed in what we did and, hopefully, we can achieve it.”
Arsenal’s belief in Arteta’s project was tested a year ago when the Gunners sat rock bottom.
He said: “You have to  understand what kind of reaction you need and fix it as quick as possible.
“We have special talents, special people, and a club that is willing to promote talent from our academy, and you can see the results of it.” More
