Tottenham’s Ben Davies praises Arsenal for sticking by Mikel Arteta – and says rivals’ season is motivating his side

TOTTENHAM defender Ben Davies has praised Arsenal for sticking by Mikel Arteta during the tough times – and says their rivals’ stellar season has been motivating Spurs.Arteta has guided the Gunners to the top of the table, having dropped just SEVEN points from their 17 league games so far.
Ben Davies will hope to start the North London derby on SundayCredit: Sportimage
But it was not always such plain sailing, particularly at the start of last season when a hat-trick of league defeats put Arsenal bottom of the Premier League, prompting some fans to call for Arteta’s head.
Arch-rivals Spurs will hope to inflict a second league defeat of the campaign on the Spaniard’s side when they host the North London derby on Sunday.
But Tottenham left-back Davies confessed to being impressed with the patience shown by the Gunners board.
The Welshman said: “Clearly, what Arteta has done there has been very good.

“But I’m sure there were very tough times for him as well when things weren’t going their way.
“So credit to the club for sticking by him, it seems to be paying dividends.”

They are fifth in the league and through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, but performances have been found wanting at times.

On watching their neighbours shine, Davies added: “It’s just extra motivation for us. They’re playing well.
“They look like a very good side at the moment.
“They’re giving every team they play against tough games but we just want to focus on ourselves right now and hopefully at the end of the season we’re there or thereabouts.”
Spurs go into the powder-keg fixture 11 points off Arsenal, having played a game more.
A victory for the white side of North London would be a huge boost to their top-four prospects.
They have had a free week to prepare for the game too which has been a rarity this term.

Antonio Conte’s men benefitted from there regularly being seven days between games in the second half of last season.
It led to them pipping Arsenal to fourth despite being four points behind them with three games to go.
Davies claimed the extra time to work is crucial because it gives Conte a chance to work his magic in training.
The 29-year-old explained: “When we do have the time on the training pitch, we have a world-class manager who can really whip us into shape when we have that time.
“Whenever you have time on the training pitch, your ideas will become more clear.
“You’ll become probably technically better knowing this is our plan going into the game.
“It’s more about the time that we get and we know that in football now, with games every three days, it’s not always easy to do that.”
The next few weeks could go a long way to defining Tottenham’s season.

After Arsenal, they face Manchester City twice in the league, with a trip to in-form Fulham  and an FA Cup clash at Preston sandwiched in between.

Davies commented: “When you play against the big teams you can look at it in two ways.
“You can either look at it as being tough or as an opportunity to bounce up the table and that’s the way we want to see it.” More

Arsenal facing Mykhailo Mudryk issues with Fifa transfer ruling causing problems as £88m Shakhtar deal is thrashed out

SHAKHTAR DONETSK are unlikely to budge from their mega-money valuation of Mykhailo Mudryk after losing out on millions due to a Fifa transfer ruling.Arsenal are eager to sign the £88million Ukrainian winger, while Chelsea have also entered the hunt.

Mudryk, 22, is eager to join the Gunners and has even shared pictures to social media watching their recent matches.
As pointed out by the Independent, however, Shakhtar are desperate to make the most out of their top asset.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, Fifa ruled that foreign players based there could suspend their contracts and leave for nothing.
This has seen Shakhtar’s Brazilian stars Tete, Maycon, Vinicius Tobias and Vitao leave for free – costing the Ukrainian club millions in potential transfer fees.

They could all theoretically return, but with no end to the war imminent, the situation will likely continue to drag on.
So Shakhtar will not be accepting any discounts for star man Mudryk – despite his desire to join Arsenal “as soon as possible”.

They believe that he is worth £88m, in line with huge fees paid by Manchester United and Manchester City for what they deem to be similar talents in Antony and Jack Grealish.
Arsenal have so far had two bids rejected for Mudryk, with the second worth £62m.

Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin is furious about his side’s transfer situation and has blasted Fifa.
He said: “We contacted the legal department at Fifa and said, ‘It’s very complicated, let’s work out the situation’. But they completely ignored our letter.
“No answer at all… it’s ridiculous. Its negligence of the decision-making process.
“They should consult all parties, especially the Ukrainian clubs. All the European organisations support Ukraine.
“How is it possible to behave like this?”
It’s claimed that Shakhtar want to sue Fifa for £43m for their ruling.

London rivals Chelsea are also targetting Mudryk, but according to his social media, the 22-year-old would prefer a move to the Emirates over Stamford Bridge.
The Gunners will hope that if they can land Mudryk that he can help add some firepower in their hunt for a Premier League title.
Following injury to Gabriel Jesus, Arteta’s side are short in attack, despite Eddie Nketiah’s current purple patch of form.
This season Mudryk has netted ten times in all competitions, including three in the Champions League. More

Matteo Guendouzi holds Aston Villa transfer talks as Unai Emery targets reunion with former Arsenal midfielder

UNAI EMERY has told his Aston Villa transfer team to land Marseille’s France international midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.Emery signed the 23-year-old for Arsenal for a bargain £7million from Lorient in 2018 while he was in charge of the Emirates club.

Now reports in France say the Villa boss has already spoken to his former player who is valued at £27million and is keen to reunite with the Spaniard at Villa Park.
Guendouzi made 48 appearances for Emery in his debut season at Arsenal but fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta and was sent out on loan to Hertha Berlin, then Marseille.

Arteta was left unimpressed when Guendouzi grabbed Neil Maupay’s throat in June 2020 and allegedly taunted Brighton’s players about their salaries.
Guendouzi would later say about Arteta: “It’s true that I didn’t have the best relationship with him.

“The most important when you’re young is to play.”
Ligue 1 giants Marseille made the loan deal permanent last summer when they landed the out-of-favour Gunner for £9million.
Now they could be ready to treble their investment by allowing Guendouzi return to the Premier League and have targeted Angers’ Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi as a potential replacement.
It is not the first time Emery has tried to team up with Guendouzi again after failing in a bid to sign him for Villarreal two seasons ago.
However he is determined to succeed this time and pair him up with his former Marseille teammate Boubacar Kamara to add more steel to Villa’s midfield.
Villa hope to offset some of the cost of the deal by offloading former Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson and Zimbabwean midfielder Marvelous Nakamba. More

How Arsenal could line up with Eden Hazard and Mykhailo Mudryk as Mikel Arteta plots double January transfer swoop

ARSENAL’S hunt for extra firepower in January has seen them linked with a number of targets. Mykhailo Mudryk has been the primary target of the Gunners so far this month, but a sensational report suggests Chelsea legend Eden Hazard could soon don the Gunners colours.

How Arsenal could line up with Hazard and Mudryk
Hazard is said to be looking for a path to end his Real Madrid nightmare, with Mikel Arteta’s side under consideration.
And it could lead to the North London club adding Mudryk and Hazard to their ranks.

Both Mudryk and Hazard are able to operate on both wings, but the Belgian has experience through the centre as a false nine.
This could give Arteta an alternative option through the centre of the Gunners attack, with Mudryk and Bukayo Saka in support on the wings.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
However, while Mudryk has openly flirted with a move to the Emirates, a move for him is proving difficult to materialise due to Shakhtar Donetsk’s high transfer demands.
Meanwhile, Hazard would go against the type of age profile Arsenal have targeted in recent windows.
This means their attention could move elsewhere and spread across other areas of the squad.
Barcelona star Memphis Depay has been linked with a move, and is a very similar player to Gabriel Jesus in terms of what he can offer the team.

Arsenal have also been linked with Barca team-mate Alejandro Balde and Palmeiras star Danilo.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have joined Arsenal in the race for Leandro Trossard, who’s Brighton contract expires in the summer which could lead to a cut-price move in January.
In an ideal market Arsenal would be able to sign whoever they wanted, but as is the nature of squad building within economic reason, they will only enter the market for the right players.
In the meantime, Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Oxford United is reportedly being investigated following allegations of suspicious betting patterns.

And he could have a surprise offer from the Gunners as they look to bolster their squad for the title race.
Outlet Mediafoot claims that Hazard could go to Arsenal if their proposed transfer for Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykhailo Mudryk doesn’t materialise amid competition from Chelsea.
Reports suggest that initial contact between Mikel Arteta’s side and representatives in the Spanish capital has been made.
Hazard’s contract expires at the end of the next season and there has supposedly been interest from MLS teams, Fenerbahce and Al-Nassr.

The 32-year-old has found minutes hard to come by at Real Madrid this season, being an unused substitute on 16 occasions.
He has featured only seven times, managing to score just once in all competitions.

His big money move to Los Blancos back in 2019 has not gone to plan as he has suffered a number of injuries and because of the emergence of Vinicius Junior.
Hazard was even recently mocked by a fourth-division player in the Copa del Rey as he was hooked off by boss Carlo Ancelotti in the 67th minute.

Versatile Trossard, 28, is on their radar for the latter role but other Premier League clubs are also keen, with arch-rivals Arsenal believed to be among them.
The Belgian’s contract with the Seagulls expires at the end of the season.
But SunSport understands Albion have the option to extend it by a further year, which they will do if he is still at the club beyond the January window.
Trossard has seven goals in the Premier League this season, including a hat-trick at Liverpool in October, though his form has nosedived since returning from the World Cup.

He was criticised for his work ethic by Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi ahead of their 5-1 win against Middlesbrough on Saturday and missed that FA Cup clash with a calf problem.
Arsenal’s long-standing interest dates all the way back to before Trossard joined Brighton in 2019 in Genk.
Speaking exclusively to SunSport shortly after signing during a pre-season trip to Austria, Trossard felt a switch to the Amex was the smart move at the time which could lead to a bigger move in the future.
Speaking in July 2019, he said: “The Brighton project is more for me at the moment.

Man Utd and Arsenal legend Robin van Persie’s son Shaqueel, 16, set for international debut after Holland U17s call-up

LEGENDARY Dutch striker Robin van Persie left a very distinct legacy behind on the pitch, but it seems the Van Persie name could soon be making a return to the headlines. This is because Van Persie’s son, Shaqueel, has just earned his first call-up to the Netherlands’ Under-17 team.

Shaqueel, 16, has followed in his father’s footsteps as a striker and seems to have inherited his scoring instincts.
His first international call-up come’s with a record 16 goals in 13 Feyenoord U17 games this season – the club where “RVP” retired.
And his development has been overseen by none other than his Dad.
Arsenal and Man Utd legend Van Persie moved into the youth coaching set-up at the club following his retirement, where it appears to have paid dividends to the family.

Now Van Persie works as assistant to head coach Arne Slot, but was spotted dining with Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag last month.
In May of this year, Shaqueel was rewarded with a contract with Feyenoord, with Van Persie senior tweeting: “Congrats Shaq 🤩🔥.”
Despite his call-up to the Oranje, Shaqueel could yet choose to play for Morocco due to the background of mum, Bouchra.
But for now at least, Holland is he who he will be representing on the international stage – perhaps with a long-term goal to try and eclipse his Dad’s tally of 50 international goals.

Despite an injury-hit time at Arsenal, he still struck 132 goals for the Gunners before swapping the red of North London for the red of Manchester in 2012.
The moved proved to be a stroke of genius for both him and Man Utd as they picked up the title with Van Persie scoring 26 goals and adding a further 15 assists.
The Red Devils have not been close to a title since, while Arsenal have only just remembered their own title-winning history after years of stagnation and mediocrity.
