Arsenal and Tottenham tipped to make last-gasp Allan Saint-Maximin transfer after Newcastle sign Anthony Gordon

ARSENAL and Tottenham should make a late bid for Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin, according to former Premier League striker Louis Saha.Saint-Maximin, 25, has struggled for game time at St James’ Park so far this season.

He was plagued by injuries at the beginning of the campaign, suffering from hamstring and other muscular problems.
But he has been fit since the end of October, with Eddie Howe still opting not to start him in a single Premier League game.
He has not been named in a Newcastle XI in the league since the end of August.
That is despite Saint-Maximin acting as the shining light for the Magpies last season.

The team appear to be thriving without him and even added to their forward line in the January transfer window through the acquisition of £45million man Anthony Gordon.
And Gordon’s arrival is one Saha believes Arsenal and Tottenham should capitalise on by trying to sign the out-of-favour Saint-Maximin.
Speaking to GGRecon, the former Man Utd, Spurs, Everton and Fulham forward said: “All young players should see how quick football goes.
“It’s unbelievable because last season Saint-Maximin was unreal and nobody would have been thinking about the prospect of Newcastle selling him.

“He’s been unlucky this season with injuries, but he’s a top player and he could potentially find a move to one of the ‘big six’ clubs.
“I could see Arsenal or Tottenham having a player of Saint-Maximin’s quality and style.”
The Gunners have already added to their forward line this month through the signing of Leandro Trossard from Brighton for £27m.

Spurs have also done business in attack, stealing Arnaut Danjuma from under Everton’s noses in a loan deal until the end of the season.
But Saint-Maximin could still add something to both squads, with Arsenal going for the title and Tottenham looking to clinch a top-four spot.
The Newcastle forward has contributed 13 goals and 19 assists in 109 games since arriving from Nice for £16.5m in 2019.

Shock stats show Arsenal might have pulled off masterstroke with Jorginho transfer with midfielder BETTER than Caicedo

ARSENAL finally turned their back on Moises Caicedo and opted for a cut-price swoop for Jorginho instead – and it could prove a masterstroke. The Gunners saw bids of £60million and £70m rejected by Brighton as Caicedo, 21, failed to secure a move despite publicly begging to be sold.

And while Arsenal were reportedly lining up a third offer of £75m on deadline day, they have now agreed a deal with London rivals Chelsea to sign Jorginho, 31, for just £12m.
He may not have been Mikel Arteta’s first choice, but the Italy international is a world-class operator who will push Granit Xhaka, 30, and Thomas Partey, 29, for a starting place.
New stats have even revealed he could be a better option than both Partey and Caicedo.
Since the start of the 2021-22 Premier League season, Jorginho has played seven games more than Partey and 21 more than Caicedo.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
His penalty expertise has seen him register eight goals, more than his two counterparts have managed between them (Partey 4 and Caicedo 2).
And the Italian also has two assists to his name – with neither Caicedo (2) or Partey (1) bettering that tally.
But that’s only scratching the surface when it comes to Jorginho’s impressive numbers.
Out of the three midfield maestros, he also completes the most passes per game, has the best pass completion rate and registers the most passes in the final third.

How Jorginho, Partey and Caicedo compare since the start of last season
Moises Caicedo appears to have missed out on a move to Arsenal this monthCredit: Getty
Jorginho dwarfs Partey and Caicedo when it comes to possessions won per game, while he also beats the Ghanaian when it comes to tackles and interceptions.
In fact, there are only three statistical areas which show the ex-Chelsea man’s weaknesses.
He comes up short in distance carried – an area which Partey beats him by an average of 14 metres.
Jorginho, who is a decade older than Caicedo, is dribbled past more than the pair, and his duel success is also the lowest.
But overall the figures are overwhelmingly in favour of the Euro 2020 winner.
And his price tag also means Arsenal have saved themselves a large sum of money – particularly given Brighton were asking for £80m for Caicedo.
Jorginho could make his debut for the Gunners away at Everton on Sunday.
If he is not ready in time, his first game will then come at home to Brentford on February 11. More

Lokonga has had limited first-team opportunities so far at the Emirates and has faced criticism over his performances.
But the Mail report Palace are interested in the 23-year-old.
The club are now in discussions with their London rivals over a potential loan move.
If a deal was to be done the two teams would have to thrash out an arrangement in the final hours of deadline day.

Arsenal’s ongoing efforts to bring in Jorginho could help free up the Belgian for the move to Selhurst Park.
Mikel Arteta had been looking for reinforcements in midfield even before Mohamed Elneny’s injury earlier this month.
Lokonga has been one the club’s rotation players since signing and played in all six of Arsenal’s Europa League group games this season.
But the star has been limited to six Premier League appearances and has struggled in the cup competitions.

Lokonga was among the back-up Arsenal stars who failed to impress in the first-half against Oxford United in the FA Cup earlier this month.
He also appeared to anger his captain Martin Odegaard during the defeat to Manchester City last week.
The Gunners have reportedly knocked back a bid from Monaco for the midfielder already in this window. More

How Arsenal could line up with Jorginho in new formation after transfer from Chelsea – so which star will be dropped?

ARSENAL are preparing to welcome Jorginho into the fold as they continue their push for the Premier League title. The Gunners have reportedly agreed a £12million deal with Chelsea for the 31-year-old Italy international.

His arrival gives Mikel Arteta some much-needed depth in the middle of the park.
Up to now, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka had very little behind them in terms of back-up.
But Jorginho coming to the Emirates will provide some serious competition for places.
And Arsenal fans will already be speculating about who could make way for the former Napoli man if he was to force himself into the starting XI.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
Arteta has consistently played a 4-3-3 formation throughout the campaign so far.
But Jorginho could switch things up a little, with the Arsenal boss potentially moving to more of a 4-2-3-1.
And getting the Italian into the team would mean one of Xhaka or Partey dropping out.
It is more likely to be Xhaka given Partey has become arguably Arsenal’s most important player.

That would be harsh on the Swiss midfielder given his superb form this season, but it would give Arteta a strong option off the bench.
And he can afford to tinker with the side given the rest of his XI is so stable.
A back five of Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Gabriel, William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko is not expected to be broken up any time soon..
And the front four of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah have been superb ever since Gabriel Jesus’ injury.
Arsenal sit five points ahead of Man City with a game in hand.

Next up for the league leaders is a trip to Everton – who will be hoping the arrival of Sean Dyche gives them a new lease of life.
Arsenal then host Brentford, before a mouth-watering clash with title rivals Man City at the Emirates on February 15. More

The Premier League leaders have been given the green light by owner Stan Kroenke to get the Caicedo deal over the line.
That is even if it means paying a club-record fee.
They have already had two bids rejected by Brighton owner Tony Bloom, who maintains that the 21-year-old Ecuador international is not for sale at any price.
But they are ready to make one last bid to persuade the Seagulls to cash in and are willing to go as high as £75million.

Russo’s current contract with the WSL leaders is set to come to an end this summer.
Her team have lost just one of the 11 top-flight games they have played so far this season.
Reports claim Man United’s contract talks with the player have yet to lead to a new one for Russo with the club.
It is thought Arsenal, who are currently third in the league, are keen to try and seal a deal for Russo before the 5pm cut-off point for WSL transfers on Tuesday.

However Sky Sports reports the Red Devils have rebuffed the offer made by their title rivals.
It is also thought the forward has been attracting interest from clubs in the United States.
Russo, who helped England to win last summer’s Women’s Euros, has emerged as one of Europe’s most talented forwards following her performances for club and country.
The Kent-born WSL star netted four goals for the Lionesses before their defeat of Germany in the Euros final at Wembley last July.

And this season the forward, who began her senior playing career at Chelsea in 2016, has scored five goals in nine top-flight appearances
This includes a stoppage time winner during her team’s 3-2 defeat of the Gunners at the Emirates.
The victory saw Marc Skinner’s side becoming the first team to beat their rivals at the stadium in the league.
Arsenal’s move for Russo comes in a month which has seen them strengthen their attacking ranks following Beth Mead’s and Vivianne Miedema’s ACL injuries towards the end of last year.
The North London giants, who play West Ham in the WSL on Sunday, signed Netherlands midfielder Victoria Pelova from Ajax and Denmark starlet Kathrine Kuhl.
The duo were both on target in their team’s 9-0 demolition of Leeds Ladies in the FA Cup.
The team will face last year’s contest winners Chelsea in a fifth round duel on Saturday 25 February.
Jonas Eidevall’s side, who are yet to win a trophy under their boss, are chasing their first WSL title win since the 2018-19 season.
On Saturday the Gunners were reported to have rejected a Blues bid for the services of their winger Katie McCabe.

Arsenal could sign Jorginho as an alternative and are looking to take advantage of the fact he is out of contract in the summer.
Sky Sports in Germany are reporting that the Italian international is ‘close’ to moving across London in a move that would raise some eyebrows.
The move has come about because fellow Blues midfielder Conor Gallagher is believed to have rejected a move to Everton.
Chelsea could look to cash in on Jorginho now but that could depend on the success of their move for Benfica star Enzo Fernandez, report The Athletic.

Caicedo has been told to stay away from training until after the deadline passes and was excluded from Brighton’s FA Cup win over Liverpool at the weekend.

It is believed Arsenal are also preparing another offer for Caicedo in the region of £70m with £5m worth of add-ons.
That would be a club record fee for Arsenal, eclipsing the £72m spent on flop Nicolas Pepe.
