Man Utd want Joao Palhinha but face transfer battle with FIVE Premier League rivals including Arsenal and Chelsea

MANCHESTER UNITED are eyeing Fulham star Joao Palhinha to beef up their midfield this summer.United, Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are all monitoring the Portuguese.
Joao Palhinha is set to be at the centre of a massive transfer battle this summerCredit: Alamy
But boss Marco Silva is determined to resist bids for the star.
Fulham paid an initial £17million to sign Palhinha from Sporting Lisbon last year but his performances so far in this campaign will have more than doubled his value to £40m-plus.
He has made more tackles than any midfielder in the big five leagues in Europe and has been the heartbeat of Silva’s side as they chase qualification for Uefa competition next season.
Palhinha’s price tag is also pushed up by the fact that he still has more than four years left on his contract, with the club holding another year’s option.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
Because of his age – he will turn 28 in July – the Fulham star may not be the first choice of top clubs who have a policy of signing younger players.
Liverpool are also said to be confident of signing Palhinha’s Portugal team-mate Matheus Nunes from Wolves, and possibly compatriot Ruben Neves, to revamp their midfield.
But Moises Caicedo, another target for the Reds as well as for Chelsea and Arsenal, has signed a new contract with Brighton that will send his price tag soaring.
And even if the Ecuador international leaves the south coast, only one club will be able to sign him.

So Palhinha will be high on the list of candidates as the biggest clubs in England look to strengthen their options in the middle of the pitch.
But he will not be available to Fulham for today’s clash with Arsenal because he is serving the second game of a two-match suspension for racking up ten yellow cards.  More

Ian Wright AND Alan Shearer pull out of Match of the Day in ‘solidarity’ after Gary Lineker taken off air

IAN WRIGHT and Alan Shearer pulled out of Match of the Day after the BBC’s decision to remove Gary Lineker from air.England and Arsenal legend Wright tweeted: “Everybody knows what Match of the Day means to me, but I’ve told the BBC I won’t be doing it tomorrow. Solidarity.”

Gary Lineker has been ordered to “step back” from the showCredit: BBC
The pundit made the decision shortly after the BBC pulled Lineker from presenting the Premier League highlights programme this weekend.
    Shearer then followed suit.
The Newcastle legend tweeted: “I have informed the BBC that I won’t be appearing on MOTD tomorrow night.”
In a major U-turn, the broadcaster announced Lineker would be suspended from his presenting duties after previously saying he would face no disciplinary action.
    READ MORE ON LINEKER
They added that the suspension will remain in place until an agreement is reached on his social media use.
Wright and Shearer are regular pundits on the show.
With Lineker absent, the duo would have been among the contenders to replace him on hosting duties.
However, the BBC have announced there will be NO HOST this weekend.
    Most read in Football
A BBC spokesperson said: “Some of our pundits have said that they don’t wish to appear on the programme while we seek to resolve the situation with Gary.
“We understand their position and we have decided that the programme will focus on match action without studio presentation or punditry.”
The decision came after potential candidates fell like dominoes.
Dan Walker, who used to present Football Focus and would occasionally sit in for Lineker on MOTD tweeted: “I used to sit in for Gary Lineker on MOTD… not sure I’d fancy it this weekend. What a mess!”
Manchester United legend Gary Neville also chimed in.
He tweeted: “I had no doubt Ian Wright would do that! Who the hell is going to go on now!”
Regular pundit and The One Show host Jermaine Jenas tweeted: “Been on air with the one show. I wasn’t down to be doing match of the day tomorrow, but if I was I would of said no and stood with my fellow pundits and @GaryLineker”
Alex Scott quickly emerged as a favourite to fill in, however she cryptically tweeted a meme of Bernie Sanders saying: “Nah, not me.”
Mark Chapman, host of Sunday highlights show Match of the Day 2, is also understood to have refused to take the gig.
Micah Richards, a regular pundit on MoTD, announced he would join the boycott had he been due to be on the show this weekend.
He tweeted: “I was not due to be working on MOTD tomorrow, but if I was, I would find myself taking the same decision that @IanWright0 & @alanshearer have.”
Saturday’s show will include highlights of Bournemouth vs Liverpool, Leeds vs Brighton, Everton vs Brentford, Leicester vs Chelsea, Tottenham vs Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace vs Man City.
    MAJOR BACKLASH
It comes after Lineker sparked major backlash this week when he took to Twitter to hit out at the Illegal Migration Bill, which bans migrants who arrive on small boats from ever settling in Britain.
A BBC statement said: “The BBC has been in extensive discussions with Gary and his team in recent days. We have said that we consider his recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines.
“The BBC has decided that he will step back from presenting Match of the Day until we’ve got an agreed and clear position on his use of social media.
“When it comes to leading our football and sports coverage, Gary is second to none. We have never said that Gary should be an opinion free zone, or that he can’t have a view on issues that matter to him, but we have said that he should keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies.”
A spokesperson added that the Beeb considered Lineker’s “recent social media activity to be a breach of our guidelines” and that he should “keep well away from taking sides on party political issues or political controversies”.
However, Sky News’ Rob Harris tweeted that a source close to the long-time presenter had revealed that he has not agreed to “step back” and is claiming that the BBC took him off the air.
Mr Harris added: “It’s understood Lineker is unwilling to apologise for his tweets and admit he should not have posted them.”
The BBC have been approached for comment regarding this claim.
Friends said Lineker had been blindsided by the statement and was being benched against his will.
The row ignited after Lineker tweeted in reference to the Government’s new immigration bill, saying: “Good heavens, this is beyond awful.”
Responding to another user who described him as “out of order”, he added: “We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.
“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
The legislation will see migrants swiftly detained and removed to either their country of origin or a safe third state within 28 days.
But the bill faces an uphill battle against human rights groups and campaigners who argue it clashes with the European Convention on Human Rights.
The BBC’s decision to suspend him represents an about turn after a BBC source previously said: “We have spoken to Gary and he won’t face any disciplinary action.
“From our perspective the situation has been resolved now and we want him to get back to what he’s best at, which is being a brilliant sports presenter.”
Lineker himself previously addressed the controversy, saying: “Well, it’s been an interesting couple of days. Happy that this ridiculously out of proportion story seems to be abating and very much looking forward to presenting Match of the Day on Saturday.
“Thanks again for all your incredible support. It’s been overwhelming.”
He declared yesterday morning that he stands by his tweets hitting out at Rishi Sunak’s crackdown on illegal migration.
Outside his London home, the the defiant presenter told reporters he isn’t scared of being sacked for expressing political views.
He added: “I have never known such love and support in my life than I’m getting this morning (England World Cup goals aside, possibly).
“I want to thank each and every one of you. It means a lot. I’ll continue to try and speak up for those poor souls that have no voice. Cheers all.”

The former England captain began presenting the Beeb’s flagship football show, Match of the Day in 1999.
He has been regarded as one of the key faces on English football in the year since and was praised by ex-BBC chief Richard Ayre. who described him as “one of the BBC’s crown jewels”.
However, Mr Ayre warned that the corporation might need to “let Lineker go unless he can be certain that this is the end of it”, referring to his social media activity.
Lineker has been accused by Tory MPs of frequently pushing boundaries of BBC impartiality guidelines.
    Read More on The Sun
Previously, the broadcaster’s complaints team found him guilty of breaking impartiality rules in a tweet asking if the Tories planned to “hand back their donations from Russian donors”.
In defence of Lineker, TalkTV’s Piers Morgan wrote: “This is a ridiculous decision and if the BBC really believes its presenters shouldn’t have political opinions then I look forward to them suspending David Attenborough and Alan Sugar and everyone else who has presented BBC shows but makes public their opinions.” More

Juventus legend Chiellini confesses he was a ‘fool’ to snub Arsenal’s £66k-a-year offer when he was just 16-years-old

FORMER Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini has lifted the lid on his failed move to Arsenal in 2001 and says he was a “fool” to reject the club. The ex-Italy international claims the Gunners offered him a huge salary when he was just 16, but felt it would be a betrayal to leave Livorno.

Arsene Wenger was keen to bring the defender to North London, but Chiellini has revealed he was too loyal to Livorno, a decision he now regrets.
The nine-time Serie A champion has stated that he was offered a whopping 200million Italian Lira-a-year by Arsenal, which was roughly around £66,000-per-year.
Speaking to So Foot via Goal in February 2021 about his failed move, the 38-year-old said: “In hindsight, I was a fool to decline that offer.
    “I was 16, I played in Serie C, I got a huge offer for just under 200 million lira-a-season.

“I didn’t feel ready. If I had accepted, it would have given the impression of betraying Livorno.”
Chiellini would leave the following year for Roma, before linking up with Juventus 15 years ago.
He received 117 caps for Italy before retiring from international football earlier this year.
The centre-back then also bidded farewell to Juve in 2022, as he joined Los Angeles FC.

Chiellini could have ended up at Arsenal later in his career after Robin van Persie revealed he urged Wenger to sign him, however his plea was ignored.

Under Wenger, he went on to enjoy eight stellar seasons in North London, winning the FA Cup and reaching the Champions League final.
In 2011, he returned to Barcelona for three years where he claimed the LaLiga title and Copa del Rey.
Then in 2014, the midfielder sought a Premier League comeback and gave Arsenal the opportunity to agree a deal before any other club.
However, Wenger ended up passing on Fabregas’ return, before he joined Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

Speaking on Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast, he said: “I really wanted to go back to the Premier League.
“In the contract when I signed for Barcelona we said that, after I leave, Arsenal will have the first option. They had a week to respond.

“So obviously we approached Arsenal, we said ‘listen I’m leaving Barcelona and by law, you have a week to decide if you want to take me back or not.’
“For a week I couldn’t talk to anyone (else). We notified Arsenal, Arsene, everyone, so after a week we called Arsene and he said he’d thought about it and he said they already had a lot of players in my position like Mesut Ozil, Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and he said to fit me in he would have to play someone out [of position].

“In my heart, I always wanted him to be in the Premier League and doing the things he’s doing now.”
Nelson has had to wait for his chance with Arsenal following injury setbacks and loan spells with German outfit Hoffenheim and Holland’s Feyenoord.
But on Saturday, he wrote his name into Arsenal folklore with his 97TH-MINUTE winner for Mikel Arteta’s men as they came back from 2-0 down to beat Bournemouth 3-2.

Ex-Marseille star hopes rumours of buy-clauses in Man Utd’s Eric Bailly and Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares deals are ‘fake news’

But a scathing verdict has been delivered on both – for different reasons.
Ivory Coast star Bailly, 28, has impressed… when he’s not missing out with injury or picking up a SEVEN-GAME ban for a shocking challenge.
But Portuguese ace Tavares, 23, has struggled defensively, albeit looking menacing when pushing forward.

“Today, it would not be a good move for OM. Then again, I don’t know if he’ll have fewer injuries next season or he regains all his feelings. It could then be something else entirely.
