Arsenal great Ray Parlour explains why Mikel Arteta can win title and where transfer target Declan Rice needs to improve

ARSENAL legend Ray Parlour believes his former club will win the Premier League because Manchester City may focus on other competition. The Gunners are top of the table with eight points separating them from second-placed City, who have a game in hand.

Parlour, who won three titles with the North Londoners, believes manager Mikel Arteta can lead his team all the way to the trophy.
That is because the reigning Prem champions will be preoccupied with the FA Cup and the Champions League, which remains the only major honour that still evades them.
The former England international loves how Arsenal are playing and advised them to enjoy the challenge as that will help them win more matches and apply more pressure on City.
Parlour told SunSport: “Well, there certainly is a long way to go. And I’ve always tried to play it down a little bit because the pressure will build on Arsenal because that’s what happens when they’re six or seven games to go but all they can do – and I know it’s a cliche – just keep playing the way you are. Enjoy it.

“And again, it’s a young team, so they look a little bit fearless at times. I know Man City beat them at the Emirates and the [Manchester] United game wasn’t great, but even then they had a few chances in the first half.
“So all I can say is Mikel Arteta has got it really going. What I like about their play now is when they lose the ball they’re trying to win it back quickly. A little bit like City do sometimes, so I think they could do it. I really do.
“I mean, Man City are gonna have the FA Cup. They’re gonna have the Champions League, which I think deep down Pep Guardiola really wants that Champions League for the club.
“So hopefully that takes their mind off it a little bit and they’ve got a tricky game against Bayern Munich now with [Thomas] Tuchel going in. So I think Arsenal have a big game at the weekend with Leeds United at home fighting to avoid relegation.

“So if you’re getting another three points, it starts putting a little bit more pressure on Manchester City and we know that game against [Crystal] Palace was a big one because Man City didn’t play and went into the international break with an eight-point gap. You know that sometimes mentally that’s really good for you.”
Arsenal are focused on the Premier League title race, but are also keeping an eye on the summer transfer window with West Ham superstar Declan Rice a top target.
Parlour insists Rice would be a perfect fit for Arteta’s midfield if the Gunners manage to win the bidding war against the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.
However, the former midfielder insists the England international still needs to improve and has to learn to get forward “a little bit more”.

West Ham star Declan Rice will have to learn to get forward, claims ParlourCredit: Getty
Parlour added: “Declan is a super player, we saw him play for England the other night [against Italy] and he was brilliant again as he scored a goal.
“But yeah, sometimes you have to get forward a little bit more because I always think [when it comes to] holding midfielders there’ll be occasions in a game where you do get past your other midfielder and it’s just a bit of common sense for me that the other midfielder fills in for you.
“That’s what I used to do when we played for Arsenal, because you know, not everybody’s got a set position at times, you’ll see yourself in a different part of the pitch.
“And that’s where the other team-mates have got to say, ‘Right, he’s out of position there but we fill in for him and then there’s no problem’. So I think Declan Rice definitely can get forward a little bit more.
“At any team he goes into he would make them stronger, so if Arsenal have got a chance to maybe buy Declan Rice, especially if they can win the league this year, that would be a fantastic signing.

Man Utd legend Andy Cole makes bold Premier League title prediction and reckons Arsenal will get ‘schooled’

Arsenal currently sit top of the table, with 69 points from 28 games.
Second-placed Manchester City are only eight points behind, and have a game in hand.
Cole, who won five Premier League titles under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, didn’t hold back on his assessment of Arsenal’s chances.
He said “I still think Manchester City will win it [league title].

“You are what, eight clear? The way Liverpool have been inconsistent, then I can see Man City winning [in this weekend’s clash]”
He was asked if he’d change his prediction if Liverpool beat Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday.
He replied “Then Arsenal [for the title], yeah, yeah. But then Arsenal need to go to the Etihad and Anfield!”
“Every time I have seen Arsenal play Manchester City, they have schooled Arsenal. I mean schooled.”

He then quoted his former manager, Sir Alex, saying “When I was playing, the manager (Sir Alex) always used to say to us, ‘The season doesn’t get started until Easter’.”
“That’s when you dropped points. If Arsenal come through that period, because there are mad games during that time, if they come through that dropping three or four points, then yeah [they’ll win the league].”
Arsenal have been without a league title since the 2003-04 season, which could give the team a boost to win.
However, it also makes them less experienced compared to Man City, who have Pep Guardiola as manager.
The Spaniard has won four of the past five English top-division trophies, making him no stranger to a title race.
Man City are also yet to lose to Arsenal in the Premier League since 2015, making them favourites when they meet on 26 April.
Arsenal play Liverpool before that on 9 April at Anfield. More

Dennis Bergkamp pulled Arsenal kitman’s pants down in front of stunned crowd – and he had NOTHING underneath

The former England international has been vocal about the wild scenes he has witnessed backstage at a time that included plenty of humour as then manager Arsene Wenger “loved a little bit of fun”.
One of those crazy incidents involved Bergkamp pulling a fast one on kitman Vic Akers.
That was when two salespeople visited Arsenal’s facilities to offer free perfumes to the team and Akers went to get some freebies.
The Dutch legend then sneaked from behind and pulled his shorts down thinking he is wearing underwear.

But the poor kitman had nothing underneath and that led to an awkward situation as well as plenty of laughter from Parlour who was present.
Akers was caught completely off guard and had no idea how to react in front of the stunned visitors.
But it all ended well as the former Arsenal man took the joke well and they all had a good laugh.
Parlour told SunSport: “There was always a little bit of fun because Arsene Wenger loved a bit of fun by the way.
    Most read in Football
“As much as he liked working hard and making sure every player knew what they were doing on a match day. He loved a little bit of fun and at times we used to hang out a bit after training. We’d just be having a bit of a fun really.
“There’s another one where it was quite funny, when Vic Akers, our kitman, came up and there was a couple of ladies up there giving away like perfume and all that sort of stuff for your wives and girlfriends and they can try it and see if they like it.
“And Vic always loved a freebie. So he came up and he stood on the side and Dennis Bergkamp walked behind him and pulled his shorts down. He had nothing underneath.
“And he didn’t know whether to pull his shorts up and he was sort of leaning on his feet as well.

“And I remember standing there all laughing and laughing. Poor ladies were like, ‘Oh!’ They didn’t know what to do the ladies either.
“And that was Dennis Bergkamp again, he was a little bit of a windup merchant. And he loved it. He even recently texted me and said about that.
“Do you know what, things like that are really good for your dressing room – really good for team spirit. And I remember sitting there for an hour laughing, I just couldn’t stop laughing about it.
“Vic, he took it really well, don’t worry about that, but just the way it happened is like slow motion and he didn’t know what to do whether to pull his shorts up.

“He didn’t know where to go. So that was quite a funny moment from Dennis again.”

Brazil’s former national team coach Luiz Felipe Scolari claimed: “He will become one of the greatest players we have ahead of us”.
Roque received his first senior international call-up for Brazil this month, coming on as a substitute in their 2-1 defeat to Morocco last Saturday.

However, Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo have also reported that the player is not looking to ignore the Premier League sides and his dad was recently in London.
Any battle for his signature could increase his price tag.
His representatives have moved their interest away from Barcelona due to the club’s financial limitations.
Barcelona were unable to sign any new players in January, and as things stand, they won’t be allowed to spend during the summer transfer window as well.

This means the Gunners should find it far easier to reach a transfer agreement.
Roque would be following in the footsteps of fellow Brazilian’s Martinelli and Marquinhos, who joined the North London club in 2019 and 2022, respectively.
Arsenal’s sporting director Edu Gaspar has been in contact with the teenager for months.
Meanwhile, in the Premier League, Arsenal will play Leeds at the Emirates on Saturday. More

“He moved to the first team very quickly and you could see straight away that he was on a level of his own.
“It took me a little while to adapt because I faced a lot of injuries in the first full season with the club, but I loved my time there; it’s where I learned to be a professional.” More

Edu played a key role in signing the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko last summer.
And he followed them up in January with clever transfers for Jorginho and Leandro Trossard.
Edu plans on continuing to rebuild Arsenal’s squad as they prepare for Champions League football next term.
And Sport claims the Gunners have now joined the hunt for Brazilian wonderkid Roque.

The 18-year-old forward has 10 goals in 40 games for Athletico Paranaense.
And he won his first international cap in Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Morocco five days ago.
Barcelona were thought to be leading the race for Roque before running into financial difficulties again.

Another declared: “Get him. Exact type of signing who could treble in value. It’s that Brazilian sauce.”

Another added: “He will be a proper signing for us and I can’t wait for this deal to go through.” More

Arsenal ‘now frontrunners for next Erling Haaland’ as Mikel Arteta targets superstar striker to fight Jesus for top spot

ARSENAL are allegedly in pole position to sign Rasmus Hojlund this summer. The 20-year-old has enjoyed an incredible international break with five goals in two matches for Denmark.
Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase to sign Danish wonderkid Rasmus HojlundCredit: Reuters
He has scored seven goals in his debut campaign for Atalanta, following a £15m summer move from Austria’s Sturm Graz, with many comparing him to Manchester City’s Norwegian hotshot Erling Haaland.
Now a clutch of Europe’s big guns are beginning to circle for the ace, including Manchester United and Juventus.
However, Italian outlet Calciomercato have declared that Arsenal are the frontrunners to sign Hojlund.
And they claim that any potential deal will cost around £30m – double the fee Serie A side Atalanta forked out for him just a few months ago.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
It follows on from reports yesterday that Arsenal are scouting five strikers ahead of the summer, with Hojlund one of them.
The Gunners are currently eight points clear at the top of the table ahead of rivals Manchester City as they close in on a first title since 2004.
That is despite Mikel Arteta’s side suffering a number of problems in attack this term.
Gabriel Jesus has only just returned following a four-month absence due to injury.

Eddie Nketiah led the line for most of his absence, but the 23-year-old has found himself replaced in recent weeks with winger Leondro Trossard being deployed as a false nine.
Arteta is determined not to be left short of options again and has made a new striker a top priority to challenge Jesus.
Arsenal have been scouting “a more physical” forward with five players being watched to add an “extra dimension” to their attack.
We reported how Juventus are “preparing for life” without 6ft 3in star Dusan Vlahovic, who the Gunners have tracked long-term.
Vlahovic, 23, joined Juventus from Fiorentina back in January 2022 after snubbing the chance to move to the Premier League with Arsenal.
The Serb has scored eleven this term but has struggled for goals over recent weeks for his club although Arteta is still a fan.
England internationals Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Everton, 26, and Roma’s Tammy Abraham, 25, also both “fit the mould” of what he is looking for.
The North London team have been linked with both previously and this fresh update says they are still being scouted.
They are also in the transfer chase for Napoli’s Nigerian goal machine Victor Osimhen but face stiff competition from Man United and a host of other clubs for his signature. More

During his career he also represented West Ham between 2018 and 2020.
And Wilshere would love to see his old team-mate Declan Rice sign for the Gunners and join up with Mikel Arteta’s men.
The Arsenal Under-18s boss told the PA: “He’s a midfielder who can do anything.
“Anyone who supports any club would want Dec to join.

“If I’m talking from a selfish point of view, in North London, I think he would be very good under Mikel’s watch.

“I have had conversations with Dec and told him what he is doing in unbelievable, he is captain of a big Premier League club and is always learning.
“You have to be respectful to West Ham, that is his club, but his future is in his hands and it’s very exciting for him because he’s got everything with him now and he’s picking up more and more, he’s growing into this man who could play anywhere.

“I’m looking forward to wherever he goes. I hope it is Arsenal, it would be a massive signing and a perfect fit.”
Rice, 24, is under contract at London Stadium until June 2024 – although the Hammers possess the option to extend the deal by 12 months.
Despite this clause they are reportedly resigned to losing their skipper this summer – with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all having been linked.

Rice’s signature won’t come cheap, however, with his boss David Moyes vowing last month: “I think Dec will be blowing that British record out of the water, that’s for sure, when it comes around.”
