Troy Deeney: There is NO conspiracy against Arsenal – their red cards have been stupid and petulant… it’s worrying

ARSENAL’S red-card run has me worried — but not for why you might think. If the likes of Declan Rice, Leandro Trossard and William Saliba had been sent off for violent conduct, aggressive behaviour or arguing with refs, I could understand.Mikel Arteta can’t legislate for stupid things his players are doingCredit: AlamyDeclan Rice’s red card was unlucky but showed Arsenal’s recklessnessCredit: RexLeandro Trossard’s actions for his dismissal were so needlessCredit: GettyThese things happen, move on.But in Arsenal’s case, none of them were for tackles. They were simply for petulant, lazy and stupid actions — things that manager Mikel Arteta cannot account for.In all fairness, Rice’s red against Brighton for kicking the ball away was mental. The ref handled that badly. But Trossard’s against Manchester City was incredibly petulant.READ MORE TOP STORIESAnd with Saliba’s at Bournemouth, he has got credit for reacting to a poor pass — ironically from Trossard — but I would have backed him to get back and for David Raya to save it.It is something that keeps happening. My other concern is the Arsenal players are starting to feel there is an agenda against them from the Prem refs — which there is NOT.I have seen it in dressing rooms — you can find an excuse if you are looking for it. As players, it is never our fault. Most read in FootballWilliam Saliba saw red for a challenge that was clumsy in more ways than one as he felled Bournemouth striker Evanilson in mid-pitchCredit: RexFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSAnd if you are hearing it on social media and begin talking about it then it will seep in.I am also worried that when these red cards have been given, I haven’t seen or heard of anyone screaming or shouting, pointing fingers.  That’s maybe a sign of the times.Arsenal star Saka of three key men to miss training ahead of crunch Liverpool Premier League showdown I was sent off five times in my professional career and every time in the dressing room after the games, I’ve got hammered for letting the team down.I have experienced all of the emotions. Sometimes you feel hard-done-by and there is an element of smashing the dressing room up because you are angry, and sometimes I felt like a kid again getting told off by my parents — there is so much shame.I don’t sense that has happened at Arsenal; more: “Unlucky, mate. Better luck next time.”Arsenal players are starting to feel there is an agenda against them from the Prem refs — which there is NOT.Troy DeeneyYou need accountability, you need players to show their frustration. When Saliba was sent off and the team then lost 2-0, I would expect someone to at least ask: “Why did you do that?”You are supposed to have conflict. You are allowed to hold people to a high standard.Arsenal have obviously been doing that to get to the position they are at, challenging for the title. But in these situations, if they are going into games without their best players — especially an avoidable one in Saliba — then that should rightly boil over behind the scenes. And do not underestimate the toll it takes on you playing with ten men on several occasions in quick succession. It is almost impossible physically to pull it off just once, let alone three times, as well as the psychological damage of not having the ball. When that is the case, it becomes a long, hard slog. You can still see what that draw at Man City did to them — it is still in their legs, in their heads.Bukayo Saka showed commendable confidence in saying it will be Arsenal’s year but ‘with great expectation comes great responsibility’Credit: ReutersDrawing 2-2 so late on. You’ve played for so long with ten men, defended so well, contained them, and then someone scores and the whole emotion leaves your body.City now have an effect on Arsenal whereby if they are not six or seven points ahead going into the last ten games of a season, they know they will be caught. At the start of this campaign, they put a lot of pressure on themselves — maybe too much.Bukayo Saka came out and said: “This is our year, we can do it.” I liked it.I don’t see Arsenal getting a result but, for their sakes, I hope they do.Troy DeeneyBut with great expectation comes great responsibility and I don’t remember a game this season where they have looked like the Arsenal of the previous two years. They have looked clunky and looked like they are forcing things. And they are now in a position already this season where they have to go out and attack and win games, like against Liverpool on Sunday.I don’t see Arsenal getting a result but, for their sakes, I hope they do. Arsenal boost as Newcastle NOT in contract talks with star striker Alexander Isak amid fears he could quit

ALEXANDER ISAK is not in talks with Newcastle over an extended contract as Arsenal continue to lurk and potentially pounce. The Swede, 25, became the first Toon star since Alan Shearer two decades ago to hit 20 Premier League goals.Alexander Isak has scored one goal this seasonCredit: GettyHe has now scored 32 in his 58 top-flight appearances since arriving in a club-record £63m deal from Real Sociedad in 2022.That form caught the eye of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Arsenal believed to be keen.Isak remains under contract until 2028 and preliminary discussions between the Magpies and the star over a new package were held before the summer.SunSport understands that more talks are NOT currently taking place and there are none pencilled in due to him still having three years left.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLNeither party believes that a new contract is a top priority currently, while it is also understood the forward’s camp want to see how this season pans out.Isak, who has only scored once for Newcastle so far this term, has ambitions to keep playing in the Champions League after having a taste at Toon a year ago.But if Eddie Howe’s side miss out on a top four finish then he could potentially look to leave, with a lack of an extended deal increasing that possibility. And despite his poor form in front of goal, Arsenal remain keen and Toon would still easily be able to demand £100m plus for the hitman. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSNewcastle are set to be in action this Sunday in the Premier League.Isak and Co travel south to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.Arsenal fans in meltdown as transfer target Alexander Isak ‘spotted in London with ex-Man Utd star Adnan Januzaj’ TV fixtures in DecemberHere are all the games that will be televised in December…Tuesday 3 December19:30 Ipswich v Crystal Palace (Amazon Prime Video)20:15 Leicester v West Ham (Amazon Prime Video)Wednesday 4 December19:30 Everton v Wolves (Amazon Prime Video)19:30 Man City v Nott’m Forest (Amazon Prime Video)19:30 Newcastle v Liverpool (Amazon Prime Video)19:30 Southampton v Chelsea (Amazon Prime Video)20:15 Arsenal v Man Utd (Amazon Prime Video)20:15 Aston Villa v Brentford (Amazon Prime Video)Thursday 5 December19:30 Fulham v Brighton (Amazon Prime Video)20:15 AFC Bournemouth v Spurs (Amazon Prime Video)Saturday 7 December12:30 Everton v Liverpool (TNT Sports)17:30 Man Utd v Nott’m Forest (Sky Sports)Sunday 8 December14:00 Fulham v Arsenal (Sky Sports)16:30 Spurs v Chelsea (Sky Sports)Monday 9 December20:00 West Ham v Wolves (Sky Sports)Saturday 14 December17:30 Nott’m Forest v Aston Villa (Sky Sports)Sunday 15 December14:00 AFC Bournemouth v West Ham (Sky Sports)16:30 Man City v Man Utd (Sky Sports)19:00 Southampton v Spurs (TNT Sports)Monday 16 December20:00 Brighton v Crystal Palace (Sky Sports)Saturday 21 December12:30 Aston Villa v Man City (TNT Sports)17:30 Crystal Palace v Arsenal (Sky Sports)Sunday 22 December14:00 Fulham v Southampton (Sky Sports)16:30 Spurs v Liverpool (Sky Sports)Thursday 26 December12:30 Man City v Everton (Amazon Prime Video)15:00 AFC Bournemouth v Crystal Palace (Amazon Prime Video)15:00 Chelsea v Fulham (Amazon Prime Video)15:00 Newcastle v Aston Villa (Amazon Prime Video)15:00 Nott’m Forest v Spurs (Amazon Prime Video)15:00 Southampton v West Ham (Amazon Prime Video)17:30 Wolves v Man Utd (Amazon Prime Video)20:00 Liverpool v Leicester (Amazon Prime Video)Friday 27 December19:30 Brighton v Brentford (Amazon Prime Video)20:15 Arsenal v Ipswich (Amazon Prime Video)Sunday 29 December14:30 Leicester v Man City (Sky Sports)17:15 West Ham v Liverpool (Sky Sports)Monday 30 December20:00 Man Utd v Newcastle (Sky Sports) More

If Arsenal lose to Liverpool, they are OUT of the Premier League title race… the gulf is massive’

LOSE to Liverpool, and Arsenal are out of the Premier League title race. That is according to Paul Merson, who believes the Gunners cannot afford to fall behind because the “gulf is massive” at the top.Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Sunday’s crunch clash against Liverpool is a must win gameMartin Odegaard remains unavailable for selection with the Norway star desperate to return to trainingQuestion marks hang over Bukayo Saka’s availability after the Arsenal ace limped off during England’s 2-1 defeat to Greece in the Nations LeagueArsenal, who sit third in the Prem after a shock 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth last time out, host leaders Liverpool on Sunday. But they will do so without the spine of their team. With captain Martin Odegaard out with an ankle injury sustained on international duty, Bukayo Saka a doubt and William Saliba suspended after a red card at the Vitality Stadium last Saturday. And former Gunner Merson believes Sunday’s crunch clash could determine Arsenal’s Prem title hopes.READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWSMerson told Sky Sports: “This is a big football match, a huge football match. “I’d go as far as to say that if Arsenal get beat here, I think they’re out of it. Mikel Arteta’s side are already four points off leaders Liverpool and three points behind last season’s title rivals City, who host 19th place Southampton, who are winless this term. But Merson might be being too hasty as Arsenal suffered four defeats by New Year last season, going onto to lose five games all season.Arsenal ratings vs Shakhtar: Jesus reminds fans of his quality but Trossard flops for poor GunnersARSENAL continued their unbeaten run in the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk – but it was far from a convincing performance.Gabriel Martinelli orchestrated the decisive goal when his low-driven strike hit the post and deflected in off the back of goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk. Here’s how SunSport’s Tony Robertson rated the Gunners…DAVID RAYA – 7Seldom asked to do much aside from recycle the ball to Gabriel or Saliba until the final stagesPushed a potentially dangerous cross out of danger in the 84th minute. Inside Mikel Arteta’s bizarre pre-match methods with giant dominoes, pickpockets and squeezing lemons

MIKEL ARTETA’S unusual pre-match methods have included lemons, giant domino pieces and an undercover waiter. But Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko is confident the Gunners boss is close to “surpassing” mentor Pep Guardiola in their battle for the Premier League title.Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has some unusual pre-match methodsCredit: AlamyArteta has been known to think outside the box when it comes to preparing his squad for big games in the past, using props such as lightbulbs, speakers and flipcharts. As Arsenal prepare for another title bout with Pep’s Manchester City, Zinchenko revealed: “We had one where every player was given a lemon, a knife and a glass.“Mikel said, ‘Guys, I want you to squeeze these lemons as hard as you can.“In the end, we will add all of it in a bowl and we will see how much we can achieve together. You don’t want to be the one who lets the team down and have the chain reaction fail.“Again, a simple idea, but it worked so well to put everybody in good spirits before a big game and remind them that we were in this together.”At one group dinner, Spanish boss Arteta hired several professional pickpockets to steal phones and wallets from the players to teach them about always being prepared and alert. And in January 2023, before beating Manchester United at home 3-2 thanks to an injury time winner from Eddie Nketiah, Arteta produced another secret experiment in a lunch meeting.Oleksandr Zinchenko with manager ArtetaCredit: GettyZinchenko said: “Mikel announced it was going to be another players vs staff freestyle battle. “The other day, it had been me against Nicolas Jover, our set piece specialist, and I had won.“So, the manager says: ‘It’s rematch today. People were buzzing on the way to the bus. That whole thing really pushed the right buttons. “But it happens so often. Mystery as Kai Havertz denied chance to make Arsenal history but Mikel Arteta has no idea why it happened

MIKEL ARTETA and Arsenal fans were left scratching their heads after Kai Havertz was denied the chance to make history. The Gunners claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk as a first-half Gabriel Martinelli strike cannoned off the back of goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk and into the goal after hitting the post.Mikel Arteta admitted he was unsure why Kai Havertz did not take the penaltyHavertz had the chance to match Thierry Henry’s record with a goalCredit: GettyInstead Leandro Trossard stepped up to take it but fluffed his linesCredit: RexThe hosts were on top for most of the game, but had a few late scares. That could have been avoided when Arsenal were given the chance to double the lead from the penalty spot with 15 minutes to go.A VAR review had revealed that Valeriy Bondar had handled the ball in the box. However, with the North Londoners usual takers Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard sidelined through injury, it was left to a new star to take on the mantle.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLHavertz, 25, appeared to be the obvious choice, given he had scored 20 of his 21 career penalties. The German was set to match an all-time club record by Thierry Henry by scoring in eight consecutive home games. But surprisingly, it was team-mate Leandro Trossard who stepped up to take the kick.Yet the Belgian – who was already enduring a below par night – fluffed his lines as his weak strike down the middle of the goal was saved by Riznyk. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSArsenal held on to their win and clean sheet thanks to some late heroics from David Raya, though Arteta might have wished his team had added a layer of comfort.Speaking after the game, Arteta admitted he was not sure what the reason was behind the decision.Arsenal player ratings vs ShakhtarHe told Amazon Prime Sport: “I don’t know.”I don’t know the conversation because he’s one of the takers but Leo decided to take it. Okay, he missed it, [but] that’s it unfortunately.”Speaking in his post-match press conference he doubled down on the answer, adding: “They made a decision. The penalty takers normally are Bukayo and Martin. Unfortunately Leo missed it.”Reacting to the penalty miss on social media, one fan said: “You get a penalty and give it to Trossard yet your best penalty taker (Havertz) is on pitch. We can really take risks and that’s not acceptable.”A second said: “Havertz has scored 20 of the 21 penalties he’s taken in his career. Why was Trossard taking it?”A third added: “Havertz is way too nice too. Should have snatched the ball straight away from Trossard.”Despite continuing their unbeaten Champions League run, the Shakhtar win has proven costly with Riccardo Calafiori now looking set for a spell on the sidelines after going off injured. With Arsenal also confirming yesterday they would not appeal William Saliba’s red card from the Bournemouth game, it means they will be without a number of key stars as they host Liverpool on Sunday.READ MORE SUN STORIESArteta described Calafiori’s injury as worrying, while he has also cast doubt on Bukayo Saka’s availability for the match. With Jurrien Timber and Martin Odegaard also sidelined, they could be without as many as six first team stars against the Premier League leaders.Arsenal ratings vs Shakhtar: Jesus reminds fans of his quality but Trossard flops for poor GunnersARSENAL continued their unbeaten run in the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk – but it was far from a convincing performance.Gabriel Martinelli orchestrated the decisive goal when his low-driven strike hit the post and deflected in off the back of goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk. Here’s how SunSport’s Tony Robertson rated the Gunners…DAVID RAYA – 7Seldom asked to do much aside from recycle the ball to Gabriel or Saliba until the final stagesPushed a potentially dangerous cross out of danger in the 84th minute.
