Former Arsenal kit man flogs £100k worth of memorabilia after ‘falling out of love’ with Gunners over club axe

A FORMER Arsenal kit man has banked over £100,000 after ‘falling out of love’ with the Gunners and selling his memorabilia.
Paul Johnson owned a garage full of kits, medals and pennants from his 30 years of service in North London.

But the Premier League side let Johnson go in 2018 following the exit of Arsene Wenger.
And he recently began sifting through his mega collection to offer pieces up for online auction.
Johnson told the Mail: “It felt like the right time.

“Arsenal has been my life. It has been a hard decision.
“All the items in the sale have got memories. You have to move on, and I am moving on.”
Auctioneer Graham Budd added that Paul had ‘fallen out of love’ with the club.
It is also reported that a portion of his collection had previously been burgled, adding to his desire to move on the remaining archive.

A whopping £100,000 was raised in the former backroom staff member’s auction.

The most-expensive piece was an FA Cup winners’ medal from Arsenal’s 2014 triumph over Hull, earning £9,000.
Nicolas Anelka’s blue third kit from the 1998-99 campaign proved to be the most popular shirt, selling for £6,500.
Following behind were shirts worn by 1980s hero Brian Talbot, fetching £4,000, and Ashley Cole’s spare kit from Arsenal’s final game at Highbury in 2006, taking £3,000.
Johnson also highlighted two shirts he is particularly sad to see go, with one bidder paying £1,100 for Tony Adams’ Euro 82 England shirt.
Another paid £620 for the shirt Thierry Henry wore when playing for New York Red Bulls in a friendly against Arsenal.
Opposition shirts from the likes of Maribor and Mallorca earned about £50 each – paling in comparison to the famous names Johnson had received memorabilia from.

A famous Champions League trip to Real Madrid in 2006, which the Gunners won 1-0, yielded shirts from Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Carlos.
Bidders forked out £1,000 for Zidane’s top with Brazil legend Carlos taking in £440.
However, there were no offers for an array of pieces from former goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, including a signed kit and pair of boots.

Arsenal missed out on Diogo Jota transfer after he turned down ‘several offers’ to join Atletico Madrid instead

ARSENAL missed out on signing Diogo Jota after he turned down ‘several offers’ to instead join Atletico Madrid, reports say.
The Portuguese forward was making a name for himself in his native country with Pacos Ferreira at the time.

And the Gunners – managed by Arsene Wenger at the time – were among those believed to have sent scouts to watch him play.
And they would later rival West Ham in a transfer battle which eventually ended with Jota joining Atletico in Spain, according to The Athletic.
Jota, 23, said: “Atletico’s way of presenting their offer seemed serious to me.
“The financial offer was the same as the others. I liked how the club’s owner went about it.”

Ultimately the move did not pay off for Jota, who failed to make a single appearance for Diego Simeone’s side.
He was loaned out to Porto in 2016 and spent the following season at Wolves.
There, he scored 18 goals in 46 games to help them seal promotion to the Premier League.
Jota then made the move permanent in 2018 and went on to help Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves finish in seventh place two seasons running.

The form caught the eye of league champions Liverpool, as they signed the 23-year-old for £41million this summer.

Jota has since made 11 appearances, scoring seven goals, as he hit the ground running at Anfield.
He is loving life alongside star strikers Sadio Mane and Mo Salah, while he competes with Roberto Firmino for a place in the starting line up.
Jota said: “They are two world class players, we all know that quality, and it makes it easier for me to do my job because they are outstanding players.
“We played a great game together.”

Arsenal ‘offered Christian Eriksen in swap transfer for Granit Xhaka’ as Inter look to offload ex-Tottenham flop

ARSENAL could bring Christian Eriksen back to North London in a swap deal involving Granit Xhaka, according to reports.
Inter Milan are considering selling the Dane only a year after signing him from Tottenham.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Eriksen will be put up for sale in January unless he can pull of a considerable turnaround under coach Antonio Conte.
The pair have sparked a war of words in the media with the midfielder speaking of his disappointment at being left out the side.
The 28-year-old has started just 12 Serie A games for the club and is yet to register a goal or assist in 2020-21.
That has led to Inter reportedly seeking a good return on their £17million signing.

One idea that is said to be under consideration at the Giuseppe Meazza is a swap with Arsenal for Granit Xhaka.
Conte wants to bring a defensive midfielder to Milan but first-choice signing N’Golo Kante is not available from Chelsea.
Xhaka, 28, is seen as a good alternative and Inter may be able to convince the Swiss star to move given Thomas Partey’s increased prominence in the Gunners’ side.
No bid has been launched yet and Eriksen is still thought to have time to improve before Inter commit to a sale.

Tuesday’s Corriere dello Sport links Eriksen to the Gunners
Should the deal be completed, the ex-Spurs star will join a select group of players to turn out for both North London clubs – including Pat Jennings, Emmanuel Adebayor and Sol Campbell.
During the international break, he complained to Danish media that his move to Inter has been far from perfect.
He told TV2: “This isn’t what I dreamt of.
“All players want to play as much as possible, but the coach decides who gets to go on the pitch.
“It is a strange situation, as the fans want to see me playing more and so would I, but the coach has different ideas and as a player I have to respect that.”
He later added: “I don’t want to sit on the bench for the whole season. I hope this isn’t the coach’s or the club’s intention.”

Inter boss Conte has been unapologetic in rotating Eriksen in and out his side, with the playmaker only completing the full 90 minutes twice during his Serie A stay.
He told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “All the choices I make are always and only for the good of Inter, not for that of the individual player.
“I am a hammer, but this is the only way to grow. Without a culture of victory, you can never get to success, but that comes through work and discipline.
“When I leave Inter one day, I hope in the distant future, I am sure of one thing: the Inter I will leave will be better than the one I found, from all points of view. That has always happened in every club I have been to.”

Adebayor reveals he persuaded Thomas Partey to make Arsenal transfer ahead of Man Utd and Chelsea

THOMAS PARTEY was advised by Emmanuel Adebayor to reject Manchester United and Chelsea to sign for Arsenal, the striker has claimed.
The Gunners paid £45.5million to sign the Ghana international in a deadline day switch from Atletico Madrid.

But they were not alone in tracking Partey, according to Adebayor, who even believes Arsenal can WIN the Premier League having signed the midfielder.
The 36-year-old told reporters in Ghana: “About six months to a year ago, he was telling me about contacts he had had from England.
“He mentioned Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea.
“And I told him, ‘Listen, if I have a chance to play in England, a chance to play for Arsenal, the place you to have go to is Arsenal’.

“Because he is young, he is still learning and Arsenal are a family club, and I’m very happy and impressed with his first steps in the team.
“Unfortunately we all saw what happened against Aston Villa at home but he is a great player, a great personality.

“He is like a younger brother to me who is always looking for advice and we get along very well.”
Adebayor says he has helped Partey, 27, settle in London and wishes he had a similarly experienced pro to guide him when signing for Arsenal from Monaco in 2006.

He continued: “When I went to Arsenal, I didn’t have anybody to tell me what to do or where to go.
“I even told him the area where to stay, where he can find a beautiful and calm house. Because you need to be calm to play better on the pitch.”

If Leicester won the league four years ago, I think Arsenal with Aubameyang, Lacazette, now Thomas Partey – they have a big chance.
    Emmanuel Adebayor

A stop-start season has seen Mikel Arteta’s side lose as many league games as they have won, with Aston Villa claiming a 3-0 win at Emirates Stadium a week ago.
Yet, given the unpredictable nature of the Premier League, Adebayor believes the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette can lead the club to a shock title win.
The striker, who is currently a free agent, added: “If Leicester won the league four years ago, I think Arsenal with Aubameyang, Lacazette, now Thomas Partey – they have a big chance.
“It is going to be difficult, if you see the way Liverpool are playing now, it is going to be very difficult.

Mikel Arteta already ‘under pressure from Arsenal board’ despite still being in ‘transition period’, says Cesc Fabregas

MIKEL ARTETA will not have forever to turn Arsenal around, Cesc Fabregas has warned.

This season has been described by former Gunners star Fabregas as a ‘transition period’ that he believes is necessary for Arteta to succeed.
But the Spaniard has acknowledged the limited amount of patience afforded to managers nowadays.
Fabregas told 90min: “It’s a transition period. Mikel has his ideas, but it takes time.

“The problem for a coach nowadays is that you have no time. You lose three games, everyone is asking for your head.
“I know it’s very, very difficult because you want to implement your ideas, and it’s a process.
“Sometimes, it’s difficult because football is moving very quickly, everyone wants to win, there’s pressure from the board, from the fans, from the players.

“You’re on the spot every single day.”

Fabregas, 33, is confident that Arteta can interpret his footballing education into more trophies at Emirates Stadium.
The manager enjoyed a spell at Arsenal as a player followed by a coaching role under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.
And that creates a great deal of ‘excitement’ for Fabregas.

He added: “You can see that he’s a leader, that he knows a lot of football.
“He obviously learned from one of the very best coaches in history, Pep Guardiola, and for him, that must have been a masterclass.
“I have no doubt about that. [Pep] was at Barcelona, he knows what it takes to win.
“It’s an exciting moment for Arsenal, because I believe that even though it’s his first job, he’s showing personality, and hopefully he can do well for the club.”
