Arsenal set for ‘special’ January transfer window as they target both Dominik Szoboszlai and Houssem Aouar

ARSENAL are tipped to pull off a ‘special’ deal in January and could land Dominik Szoboszlai, according to reports.
Mikel Arteta’s side are floundering in 14th place and could return to the market next month.

Houssem Aouar was a major target during the club’s busy summer spree but chose to stick with Lyon.
More recently, RB Salzburg star Szoboszlai has caught the eye of the Gunners.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the winger has been on Arsenal’s radar for a number of years.
And he told Que Golazo Podcast that something ‘special’ is brewing at Emirates Stadium ahead of the window opening.

Multiple outlets have reported on the interest in 20-year-old prodigy Szoboszlai.
The midfielder scored a spectacular last-minute winner to send Hungary to Euro 2020 in their recent play-off with Iceland.

He has also made a splash in the Champions League, netting against Lokomotiv Moscow and Atletico Madrid before suffering a horror miss in the defeat to Bayern Munich.

In total, the Salzburg star has eight goals and nine assists in 2020-21.
The Austrian side’s sister team, RB Leipzig, and Tottenham are also rumoured to be keen on Szoboszlai.
Whether he can help Arteta’s side soon is another matter however, with Salzburg said to want their man back on loan until the summer.
Arsenal could certainly do with attacking reinforcements pronto having slipped down the table.
Only the three teams in the relegation zone have scored fewer goals than the Gunners, who face rivals Spurs on the weekend.
Former Premier League star Roy Keane even remarked after the defeat to Wolves that Arteta is facing a relegation battle.
Looking ahead to the North London derby, he said: “The [games] all seem big at the moment, don’t they?

“Maybe that might be the best game for them to have next… it’s a derby and it’s away, so less pressure than at home.
With a smile, he added: “But Arsenal… I still think they have enough to stay up.
“I think they’ll be strong enough to stay in the division.”

Barcelona include Arsenal ace Mustafi and Chelsea’s Rudiger on January transfer shortlist but Eric Garcia is No1 target

RONALD KOEMAN is formulating his January wishlist with Shkodran Mustafi one name being eyed by the Barcelona boss.
Injuries to two stars will dominate the Catalans’ transfer business with centre-back Gerard Pique and striker Ansu Fati out until the spring.

Antonio Rudiger of Chelsea is also struggling for first-team opportunities in EnglandCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Memphis Depay is reportedly still Koeman’s preference for a new attacker.
But the club’s desperate financial situation, plus the wealth of other options available to the coach, may make the Dutchman’s switch unlikely.
Pique’s injury, Ronald Araujo’s absence, Samuel Umtiti’s long-term knee problem and a recent knock to Clement Lenglet may see a centre-back favoured.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Koeman has told the club that former Barcelona academy star Eric Garcia is his preferred target.

Manchester City put up a considerable fight to keep the Spaniard in the summer and may continue to do so, even if he can leave for free when his contract expires in June.
Should Garcia remain out of reach, a defender with top-level European experience is thought to be the objective.

Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi and Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger are named as two alternatives.
Neither player is prominent in their manager’s thoughts with Mustafi limited to Europa League outings following his disastrous Premier League return against Leicester.

Likewise, Rudiger has been regularly benched by Frank Lampard with just one league outing to his name.
Vital in any Barcelona bid is the upcoming presidential election, taking place on January 24.

Tuesday’s Mundo Deportivo highlights Barcelona’s continued desire for the youngster

The new chief could decide to forego the club’s ailing economics to oversee a spending spree in the final days of the window.
However, Koeman has been getting on relatively well without Pique and Fati.
Academy prospect Oscar Mingueza, 21, stepped into the defence for the 4-0 wins over Dynamo Kyiv and Osasuna.
And unwanted forward Martin Braithwaite has also made his mark, netting three goals in the past week.

Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno forced to wear white away shirt because his green and black kits clash with Wolves

ARSENAL were forced into a bizarre kit change against Wolves – with Bernd Leno donning the Gunners’ away shirt.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side travelled to Emirates Stadium on Sunday bidding to condemn their hosts to a third straight league game without a win.

But the visitors also took a kit combination that led to an unusual decision in the Gunners’ dressing room.
Arsenal goalkeeper Leno typically dons a black kit for home games, with a green option when playing away.
On Sunday, Wolves lined up in their gold-and-black kit with goalkeeper Rui Patricio in his green top.
With the away side’s reserves left in the Midlands, the onus fell on the Gunners to avoid the clash.

Leno does possess a peach alternative that he has donned earlier in the season – which was presumably deemed too similar to his own team’s red shirts.
Fans were left baffled after the switch was confirmed.

Twitter user Rash joked: “The real reason is Leno will play at RW if Willian doesn’t perform.”
Another fan asked: “Why are we (the home team) changing shirt for Wolves?”

George fumed: “If our and Wolves’ GK kits clash, make them change it not us. As always we are paying the price for it. I know it’s something miniscule but it’s always us who have to bow down.”
While Em added: “Third kit would’ve made much more sense but COYG.”

Where Arsenal’s final XI to play at Highbury are from 14 years ago are now, including Thierry Henry as a manager

ARSENAL bid farewell to Highbury 14 years ago and leapfrogged Tottenham to secure fourth-place in the Premier League and a Champions League spot.
A 4-2 victory over Wigan saw the Gunners close the book on their home of 93 years in fitting manner, with Thierry Henry bagging a hat-trick.

And it was the end of an era in many other ways as Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Sol Campbell, Jose Antonio Reyes and Ashley Cole left the club the following summer having each collected multiple winners’ medals in North London.
The club had plenty to celebrate and did so in style after the comeback win over Wigan – in part earning revenge for Jason Roberts’ last-ditch away goal that secured the Latics’ League Cup final spot earlier that season.
The result also marked a triumphant rise to the final Champions League qualification place, thanks to Tottenham’s lasagne-instigated defeat at West Ham.
Here, SunSport details where the starting XI from that day are now.

    GK: JENS LEHMANN
Jens Lehmann has Henry to thank for scrubbing David Thompson’s long-range free-kick that ignominiously beat the goalkeeper from the history books.
Two years later, the German departed Arsenal for Bundesliga side Stuttgart but came out of retirement amid a Gunners injury crisis to face Blackpool in 2011 – at the age of 41.
Lehmann then completed his second return to Emirates Stadium as part of Wenger’s backroom team in 2017 but is now working as a pundit after a spell as Manuel Baum’s assistant at Augsburg.
    RB: EMMANUEL EBOUE
Ivorian defender Emmanuel Eboue took over from Invincibles hero Lauren during the 2005/06 campaign and endured a terrible time after his career went downhill.

A one-year Fifa ban after refusing to pay an agent left the player broken and his attempt to return to the game with Cypriot side Turk Ocagi Limasol was abandoned due to “serious medical problems”.
Then, in 2018, he was arrested and cleared over a suspected arson attack in North London with Eboue since opening up on how money trouble led him to consider taking his own life.

    CB: KOLO TOURE
Spells with Manchester City, Liverpool and Celtic completed a hugely successful career for Kolo Toure.
After hanging up his boots and achieving further fame as one half of the famous Toure brothers chant, he began his coaching career with the Ivory Coast national team.
Brendan Rodgers gave Toure a job a Celtic in September 2017 and the pair have never looked back, the former centre-back joining his boss in moving to Leicester last year.
    CB: SOL CAMPBELL
The playing career of Sol Campbell was far from straightforward after he left Arsenal that summer, heading to cash-strapped Portsmouth as their finances collapsed.
Although he won the FA Cup on the South Coast, the centre-back sued the club for £1.7million before an ill-fated move to Notts County, joining Sven Goran Eriksson before the League Two side’s Middle Eastern investment also fell apart.
Campbell played just once for County before a second Arsenal stint and the ex-Southend manager’s difficulty in getting a coaching career off the ground led to him becoming an outspoken critic of game bosses.
    LB: ASHLEY COLE
A two-time league title winner at Highbury, Cole angered Gunners fans when joining rivals Chelsea in 2006.
The left-back claimed another Premier League as well as a Champions League and four FA Cup winners’ medals in West London, ending his career last season under old team-mate Frank Lampard at Derby.
Since retiring, Cole set his sights on becoming a coach and rejoined Chelsea as part of their academy staff.

Ashley Cole says Arsenal Premier League win is his No.1 medal and still calls Chelsea ‘we’ on Monday Night Football
    RM: ALEXANDER HLEB
Few expected Alexander Hleb to jump back into the headlines during the coronavirus pandemic, but the Belarusian did just that when his country’s footballing system refused to close while its European counterparts shut up shop.
The 39-year-old was an outspoken critic at the Belarusian Premier League’s insistence on carrying on.
And it was in his home country where Hleb saw out his playing days, turning out for Isloch Minsk Raion following post-Arsenal spells with Barcelona, Birmingham and BATE Borisov.
    CM: CESC FABREGAS
One of the few men on the pitch that day still playing, Cesc Fabregas is currently signed to Ligue 1 side Monaco.
And not many can match the playmaker’s trophy haul since Highbury’s closure either, with a World Cup, two European Championships, a La Liga title, Premier League and FA Cup added to his trophy cabinet.
Nowadays, the 33-year-old actively engages with fans on social media and cannot resist taking the odd dig at Tottenham.
    CM: GILBERTO SILVA
Brazilian anchor man Gilberto left Arsenal in 2008 and retired seven years later after playing in Greece and back in his home country.
Initially spending seven months as technical director at old club Panathinaikos, he has worked as a TV pundit and after-dinner speaker.
But Silva’s main role now is that of a footballing consultant, most notably advising fellow Brazilian midfielder Fred as he made the move to Manchester United.

    LM: ROBERT PIRES
Henry stole the show with a hat-trick against Wigan to leave Robert Pires’ early opener – a far from typical poacher’s effort – largely forgotten.
The winger’s last game for Arsenal came in the subsequent Champions League final where Lehmann’s early red card saw him substituted for replacement Manuel Almunia.
When a brief sojourn to Indian football with FC Goa in 2014 ended, Pires joined the Gunners backroom staff and he now works as a pundit and ambassador for the game.
    ST: JOSE ANTONIO REYES
When driving with his cousins near Seville in 2019, Jose Antonio Reyes was involved in a car crash that killed the former striker and Jonathan Reyes, leaving fellow passenger Juan Manuel Calderon in intensive care.
Tributes flooded in for the Spaniard, who was still playing at the time with Segunda Division team Extremadura.
Strike partner Henry describing Reyes as a “wonderful player, superb team-mate and exceptional human being” as a police report confirmed a tyre failure at high speed.
    ST: THIERRY HENRY
A year after his iconic kiss of the Highbury turf having completed his hat-trick past Wigan, Henry accepted a move to LaLiga giants Barcelona.
It was at the Camp Nou where he played an integral part in Spain’s first-ever treble winners under Pep Guardiola – going on to end his career in MLS.
The Montreal Impact boss coached in the Arsenal academy and alongside Roberto Martinez with Belgium ahead of his breakout opportunity at Monaco, although that did not go to plan at all and he left after three months with the Ligue 1 side 19th.

    SUBSTITUTES
A hero’s welcome for Dennis Bergkamp marked his final appearance in football at Highbury and he spent many years in the Ajax setup before leaving in December 2017.
Likewise, Freddie Ljungberg is now a coach most recently seen in temporary charge of the Gunners following Unai Emery’s sacking.
Robin van Persie infamously left Arsenal for Manchester United after reaching stardom at the Emirates and is now a pundit for BT Sports.
Al Jazira FC coach Manuel Almunia retired from playing due to a heart condition in 2014 and Johan Djourou is taking Swiss club FC Sion to court after refusing a pay cut amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Arsenal problems in front of goal revealed with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring more times than Gunners alone this season

ARSENAL have been outscored by Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season – highlighting the problems with Gunners’ misfiring attack.
Mikel Arteta’s side have only mustered nine goals in as many Premier League games this campaign.

Often malighned frontman Alexandre Lacazette is the Gunners’ top-scorer, having notched three of them.
And their failure to find the net on a regular basis has left them languishing in the bottom half of the table in 11th spot.
In fact, England and Toffees striker Calvert-Lewin has singlehandedly outscored all of Arsenal’s talented forwards.
The 23-year-old averages more than a goal a game after bagging an impressive ten strikes in just nine outings.

And Emirates boss Arteta recognises his side are stuttering in front of goal.
After the 0-0 draw against Leeds which saw winger Nicolas Pepe sent off for an ‘unacceptable’ headbutt, Arteta admitted he was concerned about a lack of goals.
He said: “It worries me, obviously. We need a lot of goals to win football matches and be the top team that we want to be, without that it is impossible – it doesn’t matter how good we are defensively.

“It is not the lack of our attacking players that we have or the attacking players that we are putting on the pitch all the time.
“We need some more moments where we have to make better and more ruthless decisions. Sometimes we have to go through these patches and we have to overcome and I have to help the players as soon as possible.

“That flair, that creativity and that momentum sometimes that players need to make the last action – which is the most difficult thing in football.
“We have to create more and we have to be more consistent in the final third with the amount of things that we finish and how we finish them. But it will come.
“And, to be fair, we haven’t had much continuity with a lot of the players, for various reasons, which is very important to have some understanding with them.”
In stats provided by Opta, the Gunners are 13th for total expected goals across all Prem sides.
Arsenal are 15th for total shots and 14th for shots on target – underpinning their difficulties up top.

Champions Liverpool have had more than DOUBLE the 30 shots Arsenal have registered on target with Jurgen Klopp’s side firing off 62 accurate efforts.
Since handing London rivals Fulham a 3-0 defeat on the opening day, Arteta’s men have scored just six goals in eight games.
Former Golden Boot winner and skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has just two to his name.
Ex-Gunners forward and pundit Paul Merson believes Aubameyang should be moved into the middle from out on the left in order to score more.
World Cup winner and creative playmaker Mesut Ozil remains frozen out at the club with the German not seen in competitive action since March.
And right-back Hector Bellerin admitted the Gunners are ‘learning how to suffer’ in the bottom half of the top flight.
