Wenger to detail his radical new plans for football with Ifab including kick-ins instead of throws and offside changes

ARSENE WENGER’S blueprint to make football better will be discussed by the game’s lawmakers on Friday.
SunSport revealed last year how the former Arsenal boss wants to bring in a ‘daylight’ law to reduce the number of offside calls and bring more goals.

Wenger’s stance is backed by Fifa President Gianni Infantino.
And Wenger is also pushing for a number of other Law changes designed to speed up the game and provide more entertainment for fans.
Wenger, who was appointed by Infantino as Fifa’s head of global football development in 2019, believes that players should be able to take quick free-kicks to themselves, as is allowed in rugby union and hockey.
That idea has already been backed by Gary Lineker and others.

Wenger is also proposing that teams can take kick-ins, rather than throw-ins, from within their own half, believing it will give sides more of an advantage in possession.
It is possible that the change in restarts might only apply in the final five minutes.
His ideas will be formally discussed on Friday at the virtual annual general meeting of the International FA Board, which determines football’s Laws.
Ifab is made up of the four Home Nations, who each have one vote, and Fifa, who command four votes.

For a Law change to be enacted requires a three-quarters majority, at least six of the eight votes.
The Wenger plans are not official proposals up for a vote this week, with the only changes to be brought into effect for next season expected to be a clarification of the controversial handball Laws which have caused so much disquiet this term.
But with Infantino keen to make the 2022 World Cup a goal-fest, Wenger’s ideas will be given proper debate and are likely to be placed on the formal agenda next year, to potentially come into effect from June 2022.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta ‘wanted by Barcelona in sensational end of season swoop if Joan Laporta becomes president’

MIKEL ARTETA is on a shortlist of candidates to replace Ronald Koeman as Barcelona boss, according to reports in Spain.
The LaLiga giants look likely to miss out on silverware this season, which could cost the Dutch coach his job.

Presidential elections taking place at the end of the week will play a huge role in the direction of the club.
According to Catalan radio station RAC1, frontrunner Joan Laporta has added Arteta to his list of potential new coaches.
Barcelona legend Xavi, currently managing Qatari league leaders Al Sadd, is thought to be the preferred option for the dugout.
But Laporta is yet to decide whether or not to stick with Koeman, who will at least be given until the end of the season if the 58-year-old is elected.

The lawyer and former Catalan parliament member held the role from 2003 to 2010, famously appointing Pep Guardiola as boss and heralding Barcelona’s most successful era.
Arteta, 38, worked under the Manchester City boss as his assistant for three years before joining Arsenal.
And he came through the Barcelona academy before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2000, having failed to make an appearance for the first-team.
The Spaniard won last year’s FA Cup and Community Shield but has taken time to turn the Gunners around, with the team lodged in mid-table throughout this campaign.

Yet wins over Benfica and Leicester in the past week have generated renewed optimism for a good end to the season.
Meanwhile, Barcelona sit second in LaLiga, five points off leaders Atletico Madrid, who have a game in hand.
This month will see Koeman’s side attempt huge comebacks in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, where they face 4-1 and 2-0 first leg deficits against PSG and Sevilla respectively.

Arteta knew Arsenal star Aubameyang would shine vs Benfica after MISSING penalty in training before Europa League clash

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG convinced Mikel Arteta that he would score against Benfica after MISSING a penalty in training.
The Arsenal boss has revealed his happiness at how club captain Aubameyang, 31, reacted to the pre-game shock.

Speaking after the 3-2 win in Athens, which saw the striker score twice, Arteta detailed the positive mentality he had shown.
The 38-year-old told reporters: “Sometimes when you go through difficult moments, you can have those difficult moments and get into a sad mode and I think that’s the worst thing you can do.
“Because nobody has to feel sorry for themselves when you’re having those moments.
“What you have to do is get upset, get angry, work harder and approach the situation and face it.

“Face the challenge in a way that creates more motivation and more hunger to do it and I think in recent weeks I’ve seen that reaction.
“For example, in a training session before we played here, he missed a penalty and he was really upset.
“Instead of being sad he got upset and I said to the coaching staff that I like that and that he would be fine tomorrow.
“When you have that mentality, I think that’s the right way to approach it.”

    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) February 25, 2021

Aubameyang has endured a mixed campaign, recently scoring a hat-trick past Leeds before suffering a poor night in front of goal in the Europa League tie’s first leg.
But he made amends with two vital strikes on Thursday night, delicately chipping home a Bukayo Saka pass early on.
Another Saka ball was finished by Aubameyang’s header after 86 minutes to snatch the victory.
The striker will get another chance to exorcise his demons in the last-16 as Arsenal have been drawn against Olympiacos.
The Greek side knocked the Gunners out last season, with Aubameyang guilty of a poor miss in the dying moments.
But Arteta is confident that his star forward is set to continue his good form, starting with Sunday’s trip to Leicester.

The Arsenal manager stated: “He is getting into much better positions, his rhythm during the games is much better with and without the ball, his movement.
“The week before when we played Benfica, he had three big chances and I am not worried about him missing them because I know if he gets in those positions, he is going to be scoring consistently.
“So this is what he has to demand of himself. If we have Auba at his best, as a team we obviously have a much better chance to be successful.”

PSG ‘set to make transfer swoop for Arsenal star Hector Bellerin as Gunners eye Aarons or Lamptey as replacement’

ARSENAL face a fight to keep hold of Hector Bellerin with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly plotting a summer swoop.

A renewed push could force Arsenal’s hand, given Bellerin will have two years left on his contract at the end of the season.
Cost cutting at Emirates Stadium may tempt a cash-in with the player reportedly considering his future last summer until Mikel Arteta persuaded him to stay.
According to CBS Sports, PSG are joined by Barcelona and two Serie A clubs in monitoring the Spaniard.
Bellerin has been a senior figure throughout the Gunners’ mixed campaign so far, which has at least uncovered a resilience at the back and the fourth-best defensive record in the league.

After almost eight years in the team, the 25-year-old has won three FA Cups at Arsenal and recently returned to the Spanish national setup.
Should Bellerin leave, the North London club are said to have two potential replacements already in mind.
Norwich right-back Max Aarons and Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey are named in reports.
The Canaries rebuffed an approach from Barcelona for their homegrown star last summer and look primed to bounce back to the Premier League.

Arsenal fans raging as 5ft 7in Sterling beats Holding – SEVEN inches taller – to score header after just 80 seconds

ARSENAL fans were left exasperated by Raheem Sterling beating Rob Holding for Manchester City’s opening goal after only 80 seconds.
Sunday’s Premier League clash saw Pep Guardiola’s side aiming for their eighth consecutive league win over the Gunners.

And 5ft 7in Sterling provided City with a perfect start at Emirates Stadium when nodding home a cross from Riyad Mahrez.
But Gooners fumed at defenders Holding, Hector Bellerin and Pablo Mari for letting the diminutive winger score a free header.
In particular, the 6ft 2in centre-back Holding was seen planted to the turf as Sterling, seven inches his junior, rose unopposed.
One Gooner pointed out on Twitter: “Sterling is 5’7. Holding is 6’2. Sterling had a free header from 6 yards out.”

Arsenal fan Piers added: “Sterling is 7 inches shorter than Holding… and out-jumped him by 2ft. Utterly ridiculous.”
Eduardo commented: “Unacceptable from Holding. You can’t let a 5’7” Sterling head the ball there.”

Osman wrote: “Sterling heading in between Mari and Holding. How? So poor.”
And Koma tweeted: “So anyone knows why Arteta decided to play Mari/Holding? That 4ft Sterling scoring a header is on Arteta’s hands.”

Mikel Arteta had picked centre-back David Luiz and Gabriel Magalhaes for the midweek draw with Benfica.

But the pair were only on the bench on Sunday as the Gunners boss rotated his pack.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, pundit Karen Carney noted: “It’s a good goal by Manchester City but it’s a shocking start from Arsenal.
“It’s criminal that Raheem Sterling can beat your two centre-backs in the air to score a header.”
