Arsenal ratings: Dynamic Tierney excels in huge win over Chelsea but Saka not best suited to new five-man defence

MIKEL ARTETA rolled the dice with a five-man defence that matched Chelsea’s setup in Wednesday night’s London derby. While Kieran Tierney showed his class with a stonking performance on the left flank, Bukayo Saka looked unsuited to the role on the right.

The 1-0 win for the Gunners against a poor Chelsea side came courtesy of an early Emile Smith Rowe finish.
Here, SunSport’s Marc Mayo delivers his verdict on the Arsenal players.
    Bernd Leno – 8
Made himself big to help put off Kai Havertz with the German clean through early on.
Later tipped a goalbound Kurt Zouma header onto the bar at the death.
    Rob Holding – 7
Stood up to Mason Mount and came out on top in a key battle.
    Gabriel Magalhaes – 6
In the right place to deal with Chelsea’s crosses, albeit with no striker to worry about for much of the game.
Guilty of the odd dodgy pass in his own final third.

    Pablo Mari – 6
An unenforced error that gifted Havertz’s sitter at 0-0 gave a sense of the all too familiar for Gunners fans. Settled down afterwards.
    Bukayo Saka – 5
Started in an unfamiliar right-wing-back role and naturally lacked that experience in dealing with tight defensive situations. Often left isolated which didn’t help.
    Mohamed Elneny – 6
Pushed higher than Thomas Partey on the press and his energy was an asset, yet he could have done more to help defend out wide.

    Thomas Partey – 5
Took an age to get into the game and was guilty of cumbersome touches and wayward passes. Dug deep and improved in the latter third.
    Kieran Tierney – 8
Can play left-back, left-wing-back, almost certainly left-midfield and probably even as a left-striker too.
Asked by Mikel Arteta to do all of the above against Chelsea and matched his gusto with guile and composure.
    Emile Smith Rowe – 7
Scored the only goal with basically his first touch of the game, even if his winner looked to have trickled in off his standing foot.
Arsenal’s lack of counter potential meant it was not really his game until space opened up late on.
Emile Smith Rowe rolled in the only goal of the gameCredit: Reuters
    Martin Odegaard – 6
Busy on and off the ball, but like Smith Rowe didn’t do enough to create counter opportunities and ease the pressure off the backline.
    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6
Looked sharper than in recent weeks and showed his intelligence by rolling back the ball for Smith Rowe to score the opener. That was about it.

    Substitutes
    Hector Bellerin – 7
Bombed up and down the right flank to be a big help at both ends. Injured himself with a fine stretching diversion to prevent a Chelsea chance.
    Alexandre Lacazette – N/A
Came on for Aubameyang after 80 minutes.
    Calum Chambers – N/A
    Late replacement for Bellerin.

Arsenal ‘consider transfers for Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard to replace Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah’

ARSENAL are putting together a shortlist reportedly including Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele as part of their summer overhaul.Mikel Arteta has hinted at a very busy transfer window currently under construction at the Emirates following a disappointing campaign.

Last night, SunSport revealed that Hector Bellerin is among the stars on the chopping block.
And Alexandre Lacazette, Matteo Guendouzi, David Luiz and more are being readied for a move.
According to the Telegraph, French striker Lacazette could be joined by Eddie Nketiah in leaving this summer, with two stars eyed as replacements.
Lyon forward Dembele, 24, has spent the second half of the season on loan at Atletico Madrid but is yet to score for the LaLiga leaders.
Still yet to start for his new club, the Frenchman can move for a pre-agreed £30million fee in the summer but his poor form and fitness issues make that an increasingly unlikely option.
Dembele remains under contract at Lyon for another two years yet is reportedly available for around £25m should Atleti let him go.
A slightly cheaper option, at around £15m to £20m, is said to be Celtic star Edouard.
The SPFL runners-up may seek to cash in on the 23-year-old ahead of his contract expiring in 2022.

The striker has hit 21 goals in all competitions for the Glasgow outfit this season.
But any Arsenal approach may come up against fierce competition from Leicester, who are also thought to be keen and are set to be able to offer Champions League football next season.
The Gunners maintain an outside shot at a Europa League or Europa Conference League finish and travel to high-flying Chelsea on Wednesday.

Arsenal legend Martin Keown blasts Gunners AGAIN as ex-defender backs protest and says club is ‘going backwards’

MARTIN KEOWN blasted Arsenal AGAIN as he backed protests against their owners and said the club is ‘going backwards’. The ex-defender said manager Mikel Arteta was fortunate to avoid being sacked after the Gunners were knocked out of the Europa League semi-final.
Martin Keown blasted Arsenal again as he backed protests against their owners
Off the back of the 0-0 draw against Villarreal, which saw Arsenal lose 2-1 on aggregate, they came into their league match with West Brom in a miserable mood.
And that was reflected by pundit Keown, who questioned Emirates owner Stan Kroenke amid speculation Spotify founder Daniel Ek is preparing a takeover bid.
Keown said on BT Sport: “The fans need to have their say. The club is becoming stagnated. There’s a lack of investment.
“The Kroenkes – do they really love the club? They need to spend massively. Leno won’t sign a new contract. Luiz is leaving.
“Bellerin isn’t signing a new contract. There’s a remarkable amount of players that are uncertain of their futures.
“Arteta needs to take some responsibility. He’s outsmarted himself. He needs to keep it simple.
“I do believe he’s an outstanding coach, he needs to prove he’s an outstanding manager. It’s going to be difficult to back him if he loses again.
“It’s about results. He’s been here 18 months and he’s won an FA Cup, but when we look at league form it’s fallen away.

“The football club is going backwards and they have to arrest that slide.
“How much of the problem is about the manager and how much is about the squad?
“The manager is concerning me because he always blames the players. Massive expenditure is needed. New owners could be the catalyst.”
Arsenal went on to beat West Brom 3-1, confirming the Baggies relegation, as Arteta admitted the win was a much needed confidence boost.
He said: “We needed that win. It has been a while since we won at home.
“We scored three fantastic goals and we had some great spells in the game. When we conceded the goal we did look nervy.
“We knew the necessity to win the game. They scored out of nothing and then throw everything at you, they know the situation they are in and we struggled to play that kind of game.
“We scored three fantastic goals but we missed some big chances too.
“Europe is a completely different game, different context. There were things we could have done much better.”

Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City transfer target Yves Bissouma requests Brighton exit

YVES BISSOUMA has reportedly requested to leave Brighton at the end of the season – amid intense interest from Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City.Bissouma joined the Seagulls from Lille in 2018 for a fee that could rise to £15.7million with add-ons.

The 24-year-old has shone bright this season proving he is one of the Premier League’s most talented box-to-box midfielders.
The Mali international’s impressive performances at the Amex Stadium have caught the eye of Arsenal, Liverpool and City.
According to the Sunday Times, Bissouma has asked to be allowed to leave Brighton, who rate him at £40m.
That development paves the way for an intense bidding war between three of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
Liverpool are reportedly most interested in the midfielder as manager Jurgen Klopp has been ‘personally researching’ his character as well as off-field behaviour to make sure he is the right fit for the Reds.
In fact, Klopp sees him as a potential successor to Georginio Wijnaldum, who looks set to exit Anfield on a free transfer once his contract expires in June.

Liverpool legend John Barnes has been singing Bissouma’s praises for a while and is confident he would be a big hit in Merseyside.
Barnes recently told BonusCodeBets: “Yves Bissouma has the ability to play at a team like Liverpool. He could fill what Jurgen Klopp wants from the three midfield players.
“He is strong defensively, he works hard, he plays the ball quickly and every now and then when he needs to dribble, as much as we don’t speak about Brighton, you know he can do it, because he has.
“Of all the players playing in England, that could fit the template of Liverpool’s midfield three, he is one of them.
“He [plays] like Georginio Wijnaldum, although he doesn’t attack as much as Gini, because Brighton play a different style of football, when Bissouma wants to he can. He is 24 and young, he would be a great fit.”

Arsenal transfer target Sander Berge ‘available for £35m’ due to Sheff Utd clause as Arteta calls for club to spend big

ARSENAL will have to cough up £35million for Sheffield United ace Sander Berge as manager Mikel Arteta calls on the board to splash the cash this summer. The Gunners have endured yet another torrid season that could see them missing out on European qualification for the first time in 25 years following Thursday’s Europa League elimination to Unai Emery’s Villarreal.

Arteta is looking to bolster his midfield ahead of next season and Berge appears to be among his top summer targets, even though the Norway international endured a rough campaign marred by injury.
According to Yorkshire Live, Berge is rated at a cut-price £35m due to a relegation clause in his contract with the Blades who will playing in the Championship next season, dropping his original asking price of £45m.
This comes after the north Londoners’ manager urged the club’s hierarchy to spend big in the summer in order to put an end to the ongoing downward spiral.
Arsenal are currently 10th in the Premier League table with seven points separating them from seventh place, which usually leads to Europe.
Arteta said: “Time is catching up right now. It’s a trend, it’s years now that this has been happening.

“If the distance and the margins with the rest becomes too big, then it’s almost impossible to do it.
“The squad needs changing. There were already a lot of changes in December – something that has not been done in years but which tells us where we were.
“Things are going to have to change and the owners are going to back it up.”

How Arsenal could line up against Villarreal in Europa League semi-final with Kieran Tierney and Alex Lacazette doubts

MIKEL ARTETA will pick his most important team of the season when Arsenal face Villarreal on Thursday.A 2-1 first-leg deficit in the Europa League semi-final tie leaves the onus on the Gunners to spark a comeback in North London.
How we expect Arsenal to line up on Thursday

Far from a straightforward scenario, the Spaniard is left sweating over the fitness of three key players with a number of other stars out of form.
Alexandre Lacazette is fighting to return from a hamstring injury while Kieran Tierney battles a knee problem.
Arteta will make his decision after a training session on Wednesday afternoon with David Luiz another doubt.
There were fears the centre-back, 34, would miss the rest of the season when pulling up with a hamstring issue during the win over Newcastle.
But Arteta insisted: “He was feeling better yesterday. Let’s see how he is today.
“We don’t know the extent of the injury yet.

How Arteta may set up if Tierney, David Luiz and Alexandre Lacazette are fit
“With David it’s always possible because he wants to be available.
“He’s made an incredible effort to be in the position that he’s in today and the fact that he played against Newcastle was already a big bonus. He had surgery on his knee so with David, you never know.”
The Gunners boss, 39, was equally non-committal on the return of Tierney, who he hoped to have back for the first leg a week ago.
One player who will definitely miss the second leg is Dani Ceballos following his red card in Spain.
Mohamed Elneny is set to step into the midfield alongside Thomas Partey on Thursday night.
The Ghanaian, along with Calum Chambers, Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pepe and Pablo Mari all started the trip to Newcastle on the bench to keep them fresh.

Gabriel Martinelli started the 2-0 win and Arteta may choose to stick with the Brazilian, Gabriel Magalhaes or Mat Ryan.
The coach said: “We have to embrace the challenge and the opportunity we have ahead.
“I think it’s the tenth time that the club has been in a European semi-final, so it doesn’t happen very often. We have to take the opportunity tomorrow and earn the right to be in the final.”
