    Full-time: Gabon 1-0 Comoros
That’s all from me as Gabon got their Group C campaign off to a winning, if unconvincing start.
Thanks for joining me, and keep it SunSport for all things Afcon this month.
    Full-time: Gabon 1-0 Comoros
Aaron Boupendza’s 16th minute goal came against the run of play for Gabon.
And the Comoros continued to cause the Panthers problems as the match went on.
But a slight lack of quality going forward saw them come just short on their Afcon debut, although they can hold their heads high.
Gabon will have to play much better against Morocco and Ghana if they are to go through.

    Full-time – Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    That’s it in Yaounde!
It’s unconvincing, but Gabon have started their Group C campaign with a win.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
90+5. The ball struck Lloyd Palun flush in the side of the head.
He’s now conscious again and walking, not requiring the stretcher.
But he surely can’t continue in these final moments of the match.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
90+3. The free-kick is smacked straight into the wall and that’s probably that for the Comoros.
There’s a bit of concern for the man that blocked the free-kick, who appears possibly unconscious and is receiving urgent treatment.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
90+2. Free-kick in a decent position for the Comoros.
    They couldn’t, could they…?
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    90. The fourth official signals three minutes of adding time.
It’s now or never for the Comoros!
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    88. Jean Noel Amonome flaps at a distinctly aimless cross.
But the Gabon goalkeeper uses the opportunity to dive on the ball and waste some time.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    85. Comoros send an aimless ball forward.
The underdogs appear to be tiring here, but Gabon have seemingly no interest in trying to hold on to the ball.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    84. Can the Comoros conjure one final effort in their hunt for an equaliser?
As it stands Gabon are headed for a deeply unconvincing victory in their Group C opener.

    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    82. El-Fardou Mohamed picks up the ball just beyond the halfway line and elects to shoot!
His team-mates must be annoyed with him there… he’s missed by miles.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    80. Former Millwall favourite Nadjim Abdou is on for the Comoros.
Now 37, the midfielder plays his club football for Martigues.
Can he help his nation produce a historic equaliser?

    Gabon 1-0 Comoros – Substitution
    79. Goalscorer Aaron Boupendza is replaced by David Sambissa for Gabon.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    77. Bouanga comes close again! But his effort is thwarted by Nadhoim.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros – Substitutions
    75. The Comoros make another pair of changes, as Ahmed Mogni and Nadjim Abdou replace Rafidine Abdullah and Kassim M’Dahoma.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros – Chance!
    73. Now it’s Comoros’ turn to come close!
Said Bakari unleashed a shot from outside the box and I must confess I thought it had gone in!
Instead, however, Amonome’s intervention pushes the ball out for a corner.
Gabon 1-0 Comoros – Big chance!
    72. Saint-Etienne ace Denis Bouanga finally produces a moment of quality!
The Ligue 1 forward jinks inside before thumping a shot towards goal!
It’s a little close to Nadhoim, however, and is slapped away.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    70. Should Comoros have had a penalty?
Bruno Ecuele Manga went diving into a challenge on Mohamed.. I’ve seen them given!
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    69. The Comoros remain well on top but just cannot quite carve out an opening.
Their time is just beginning to run out in Yaounde.

    Gabon 1-0 Comoros – Substitutions
    66. Ulrick Eneme Ella is on for Jim Allevinah.
While Comoros have made a change of their own, with Mohamed Youssouf replaced by Djoumoi Moussa.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    66. Brighton youngster Ulrick Eneme Ella is readying himself to come on for Gabon.
The 20-year-old will be earning just his second cap.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    63. Jean Noel Amonome is now crumpled in a heap again after being fouled by El-Fardou Mohamed.
He’s up again and okay now though and we’re going again.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    62. Decent chance for Comoros!
Youssouf curls in an inviting, deep cross from the left flank.
But his team-mate struggled to make a meaningful connection in the middle.
Can Comoros find that precious leveller?
Gabon 1-0 Comoros – Yellow Card
    61. Andre Poko is booked for cynically bringing down his opponent.
    Gabon 1-0 Comoros
    60. Penalty shout for Comoros!
Were Gabon lucky not to be penalised there… it looked like there was contact!
VAR have elected NOT to get involved.
    That might be controversial.

Why is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang not playing for Gabon at AFCON?

GABON kick off their AFCON campaign against Comoros in Cameroon. However, Gabon star man and Arsenal ex-captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be playing no part of the game.
GABON VS COMOROS LIVE – LATEST UPDATES
    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang flying to AFCON
Why is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang not playing for Gabon?
Aubameyang tested positive for Covid on his arrival in Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The news came just days after the Gabon forward was spotted partying with team-mates in Dubai.
Videos posted online revealed Aubameyang, 32, on a night out with Mario Lemina, 28, who has also tested positive for coronavirus.

The pair will miss Gabon’s opening two group matches against Comoros, on January 10, and Ghana four days later on Friday, January 14.
Aubameyang had last Wednesday shared a selfie of himself travelling on the plane heading to Cameroon.
But according to Sport News Africa, the Arsenal forward and Lemina tested positive for Covid after arriving in Cameroon.
It adds to more woes for Aubameyang, who two weeks into December was STRIPPED of Gunners captaincy.
He was then dropped by Mikel Arteta for Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Southampton after arriving back late from an authorised trip to France.
The former Borussia Dortmund man has not returned since.
But was given permission to leave the Gunners camp to join Gabon early – only to then test positive for Covid after being out with the public in the Middle East.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: “For me, its difficult to judge when the players are away and I don’t know what they were able to do or not.
“The decisions I’ve taken are in the best interest of the club and trying to do the right thing.”

Morocco 1 Ghana 0: Watch Arsenal star Thomas Partey accidentally ‘assist’ Sofiane Boufal in nightmare Afcon start

THOMAS PARTEY set up the winning goal in his first game in the Africa Cup of Nations… but for the wrong side. The Arsenal midfielder started for Ghana in their opening group match against Morocco.

And he was left in disbelief as Angers winger Sofiane Boufal fired home a late winner on 83 minutes.
But the former Southampton forward, 28, was unwittingly set up by Partey, 28, whose attempted interception put the Morocco forward in on goal.
And after Boufal cooly finished, it settled the game, with fans on Twitter quick to point the finger at Gunners man Partey.
One said: “Thomas Partey with the assist.”
Another said: “Great assist by Thomas Partey.”
One wrote: “Thomas Partey gave a very beautiful assist today?”

    Morocco 0-0 Ghana
8 mins: Morocco make their way into the Ghana half for the first time and Hakimi wins a corner off Rahman.
Better deliver than the Ghana corners! Saiss gets up well but his header isn’t timed well and it drifts well wide.
Incidentally, Morocco have also switched to a four at the back now. They’re playing a 4-1-4-1 type system.
    Morocco 0-0 Ghana
6 mins: Jordan Ayew plays the free-kick short to Paintsil and his cross is deflected out for another Ghana corner. Early pressure from the Black Stars.
Morocco get this one clear but Sulemana draws a challenge from Ounahi and it’s ANOTHER corner for Ghana – their third of the game after just five minutes.
Cleared away again though. Morocco have not got a grip of this match yet.
    Morocco 0-0 Ghana
4 mins: This has been a very nervy start from Morocco. Masina fails to control a simple pass and let’s it roll out for a throw-in to Ghana.
Partey then draws a free-kick as Louza bundles him over midway inside the Moroccan half.
    Morocco 0-0 Ghana
2 mins: Slow start in this one as the two teams contest a couple of throw-ins. PSG full-back Hakimi’s left a lot to be desired and Ghana took possession from Morocco.
Andre Ayew wins Ghana a corner which Paintsil delivers…punched clear by Sevilla keeper Bono.
    Morocco 0-0 Ghana
1 min: HERE WE GO THEN!
Looks like Ghana are lining up in more of a 4-1-3-2 rather than a 4-4-2. Morocco very much playing their 3-4-3.
    Morocco get us underway.
    Morocco vs Ghana
Right then, the next time you hear from me will be when the whistle blows for kick-off in Cameroon.
A mouthwatering clash between two sides who are looking to go deep into this competition.
Who will come out on top?
    Morocco vs Ghana
A quick reminder of the two teams and how they will line up for the game this afternoon then.
Morocco XI (3-4-3): Bono; Mmaee, Masina, Aguerd; Hakimi, Saiss, Ounahi, Amallah; Aboukhlal, Boufal, Louza.
Ghana XI (4-4-2): Wollacott; Rahman, Amartey, Djiku, Yiadom; Paintsil, Baba, Thomas, Sulemana; A. Ayew, J. Ayew.
    Morocco vs Ghana
The players are warming up and we are less than 15 minutes away from kick-off in Cameroon!
Five Africa Cup of Nations crowns between these two teams. It promises to be an entertaining clash!
Who are the favourites for the tournament?
Here are the eight favourites for the tournament and the odds for each of them:

    Senegal 10/3
    Algeria 9/2
    Egypt 7/1
    Cameroon 7/1
    Ivory Coast 8/1
    Morocco 9/1
    Nigeria 11/1
    Ghana 18/1

    Morocco vs Ghana
Swindon Town keeper Joe Wollacott starts in a major international tournament for Ghana this afternoon.
This is why this competition is so brilliant. The League Two shot-stopper has the opportunity to compete for his country in a huge international competition.
Superb. He will make his fifth cap for Ghana today.
    Momentous game for Ghana
The match today is also a landmark one for Ghana as it is their 100th at the Africa Cup of Nations.
They have won the competition on four occasions – in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982.
But it’s now been 40 years since they have tasted an AFCON triumph. Time to end that hoodoo?
    The Ayew brothers
It’s worth saying that Andre and Jordan Ayew are the two most capped players in the Ghana squad for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Jordan has made 73 appearances for his country, while older brother Ayew will earn his 101st cap today.
So by the end of today we will have 175 caps from the same family. Not bad!
    Credit: AFP – Getty
    Mane wins MOTM award
Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has scooped the Man of the Match award after scoring a stoppage time penalty to hand Senegal a 1-0 win over Zimbabwe.
I’m sure there is plenty more to come from the sensational forward.

    Clash of formations
So we are expecting Morocco to line up in a 3-4-3 formation with Wolves defender Romain Saiss lining up in central midfield for his country. He is also the captain.
Meanwhile, Ghana are set to begin in a more conventional 4-4-2 with brothers Jordan and Andre Ayew leading the line. Arsenal man Thomas Partey will also be hoping to dictate the midfield.
    So it’s a 3-4-3 vs a 4-4-2.
    Intriguing!

Past Africa Cup of Nations winners
So Algeria are the current holders of the Africa Cup of Nations champions having won the tournament back in 2019.
Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Zambia won the previous four competitions before then.
And before that Egypt secured three successive AFCON titles in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
    English-based players for Ghana
And here are the members of the Ghana squad who play their club game in England:

    Joe Wollacott (Swindon Town)
    Andy Yiadom (Reading)
    Baba Rahman (Reading)
    Daniel Amartey (Leicester)
    Thomas Partey (Arsenal)
    Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace)

    FT: Senegal 1-0 Zimbabwe
Wow, major drama in the game which has just finished elsewhere.
Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has won the game for the 2019 runners-up with a stoppage time penalty.
The spot kick was awarded for a controversial handball. The referee pointed to the spot and VAR did not overturn.
Senegal get themselves off to a winning start. Just.
    English-based players for Morocco
For those English AFCON fans wondering which English-based players are in the Morocco squad, here they are:

    Romain Saiss (captain) – Wolves
    Adam Masina – Watford
    Ilias Chair – QPR
    Imran Louza – Watford

    Group C
Morocco and Ghana have been drawn in Group C – there are six groups at the tournament.
The other two teams – who play at 7pm GMT tonight – are Comoros and Gabon.
Here is a full list of the teams at the Africa Cup of Nations.

    Morocco vs Ghana: Head-to-head
So with kick-off a little over an hour away (4pm GMT) let’s bring you a little background as to the two teams’ history between one another.
Morocco and Ghana have faced each other 11 times. Morocco have won five, Ghana three and there have also been three draws.
But the two countries have only met twice in competitive fixtures since the turn of the century. Both have come at Afcon – the first drawn 0-0 and the second won 2-0 by Ghana.
So history may be with Morocco but recent history lies with Ghana.
    All to play for.
    Welcome from Cameroon
Hello and welcome to live coverage of Morocco vs Ghana in the opening round of Africa Cup of Nations fixtures.
Two sides who will be hoping they can go deep in this tournament but will be under no illusions that this is an easy first game for either of them.
Two sides who have not won the tournament for some time – Morocco since 1976 and Ghana since 1982.
Can they end those years of hurt in 2022? Their journeys start here.

Sadio Mane gave Senegal a winning start to the competition – but they left it late against Zimbabwe
The tournament follows a familiar format with the 24 nations split in six groups of four – but will teams that finish third make it through to the knockouts?
Does finishing in third place qualify for AFCON last-16?
Similar to how Euro 2021 played out last year, the top two teams from each group will automatically reach the knockout stages.
But the four highest ranked third-place teams will also join them in the last-16 stage.
The bad news for those nations is they will face a side who has finished top of their respective group.
Once the competition reaches the last-16 stage, it’s a simple knockout tournament until we get our finalists on February 6.
There is extra-time and penalties in each tie should they end in a draw, with a third-placed playoff for the two losing semi-finalists.

Cameroon 2 Burkina Faso 1: AFCON 2022 hosts fight back to win opener after Andre Onana’s blunder

AJAX goalkeeper Andre Onana was left red-faced after conceding the first goal of of the Africa Cup of Nations. The Cameroon shot-stopper was directly at fault for Burkina Faso’s opener on 24 minutes after a moment of madness between the sticks.

A brace of penalties from Vincent Aboubakar saw Cameroon come from behind to winCredit: AP
In the end two Vincent Aboubakar penalties late in the first half saw the hosts come from behind to win 2-1, with the Cameroon skipper also having another strike ruled out by VAR for offside.
This year’s tournament marks the first time VAR will be in use for every game of the competition, having only been in force from the quarter-finals onwards in 2019.
And the technology had to work overtime for today’s incident packed clash.
Bertrand Traore conceded the first penalty for a clumsy challenge on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, which was only given after a lengthy VAR review.
Aboubaka coolly sent Herve Koffi the wrong way on 40 minutes, as he did again in the third minute of first half stoppage time after Issoufou Dayo carelessly slid in on Nouhou Tolo.
It means the five-time Afcon winners and tournament hosts go top of Group A thanks to three points from their opening game of the competition.

Cameroon goalkeeper Onana, 25, was playing in just his third game back after serving a NINE month ban from football for a doping violation.
He actually finished the suspension in November, but has been out of favour at Ajax, playing just twice since.
The keeper is still No1 between the sticks for Cameroon, but might not be for much longer after his absolute howler in the Afcon opener.
After being rescued by a goal-line clearance following a header by Aston Villa man Traore, Onana then made a right mess of a resulting cross.
His blushes were spared momentarily as the ball rebounded off the crossbar, but it was quickly whipped back into the box.
And as he tried to punch clear, Onana missed the ball completely, leaving Gustavo Sangare free to volley home at the back post and give Burkina Faso a shock 1-0 lead.
Aboubakar’s two penalties eventually helped spare Onana, as the tournament hosts recovered well from going a goal down.
Cameroon kicked off their Afcon campaign with a winCredit: Reuters
But Inter Milan fans may be a little nervy about their impending arrival after seeing Onana’s shocker.
He’s reportedly set to join the San Siro side when his Ajax contract expires in the summer.
