    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has left AFCON
Why is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang not playing for Gabon?
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will fly home early from the Africa Cup of Nations due to his current health issues, Gabon confirmed.
The Arsenal hitman missed Gabon’s 1-1 draw with Ghana on Friday after it was discovered he had ‘lesions’ on his heart following a bout of Covid.
Aubameyang is said to have felt fine, although talks between Arsenal and the Gabonese football federation over what’s best for the player took place.
Gabon have now confirmed Aubameyang will return England this week after a review of his condition.
Arsenal’s doctors were NOT believed to have been concerned with Aubameyang’s health, but the player has been sent home regardless.
Aubameyang is reportedly one of three Gabon players to be diagnosed with heart lesions last week.
Former Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina and Axel Meye were also said to have lesions on their hearts after catching Covid.
Aubameyang and Lemina were snapped enjoying a night out in Dubai ahead of the rescheduled tournament.

The pair missed Gabon’s opening group matches against Comoros, having to sit out in isolation.
Gabon coach Patrice Neveu has refuted his own federation’s claims that the pair are dealing with cardiac issues, telling ESPN: “In the readings, it’s clear that Aubameyang has no cardiac problems
“He [and Lemina] passed PCR tests and they were negative.

    Cape Verde 0-0 Cameroon
5 The two teams are rather evenly-matched in the opening few minutes.
That’s a big deal for Cape Verde as they have been badly hit from coronavirus with their manager Bubista forced to self-isolate at home.
His assistant Humberto Bettencourt has taken charge in the dugout today

    2 And another quick reminder:
Cape Verde manager Bubista appears to have opted for a 3-4-2-1 formation with Vozinha starting between the sticks and Diney Borges, Roberto Lopes as well as captain Stopira in defence.
Jeffry Fortes plays at right wing-back with Dylan Tavares on the other side, while Patrick Andrade and Kenny Santos link up in midfield.

    Cape Verde 0-0 Cameroon
    1 Just a quick reminder:

    FAST KAR
Cameroon star Vincent Aboubakar is the Africa Cup of Nations’ leading goalscorer.
Aboubakar has netted a total of four goals in two matches so far with braces against Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
That’s two goals more than Wahbi Khazri, Gabadinho Mango, team-mate Karl Toko Ekambi and Ibrahima Kone.
The Al-Nassr star poses as the most dangerous player on the pitch today

    Cape Verde stats
Cape Verde are third in Group A with the same points as second-placed Burkina Faso.
Bubista’s men defeated Ethiopia in their group opener and then lost to Burkina Faso.
A victory would seal qualification as long as Burkina Faso don’t win as well.
If both teams fail to emerge victorious then the Blue Sharks will have to better the latter’s result.
But even if Cape Verde finish third, then they can still hope to qualify for the Round of 16

    Cameroon stats
Cameroon are already through to the Africa Cup of Nations’ Last 16.
The Copa Africa hosts top Group A with six points, which is three more than second-placed Burkina Faso.
Toni Conceicao’s men have won both of their first two matches against Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.
Cameroon have also netted six goals, four of which are from the competition’s leading scorer Vincent Aboubakar

    GOOD AFTERNOON FROM CAMEROON
Welcome to our live coverage of the Africa Cup of Nations clash between Cape Verde and Cameroon at the Paul Biya Stadium.
The Copa Africa hosts have already punched their ticket to the Last 16 and Cape Verde are hoping to join them in the play-offs.
Toni Conceicao’s team have been enjoying a dream start in the competition as they beat both Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in Group A.
Al-Nassr star Vincent Aboubakar has been on fire as he scored a brace in each of his national team’s outings and is expected to lead the line once more.
There’s a high chance Aboubakar will team up with Lyon’s Karl Toko Ekambi up front for their final match in the group stage.
Conceicao has a number of experienced players at his disposal, such as Bayern Munich star Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as well as Middlesbrough ace James Lea Siliki.
Cape Verde manager Bubista, on the other hand, is expected to maintain Vozinha between the sticks after his return from injury against Burkina Faso last time out.
However, the African nation could make a slight tweak up front as Al-Faisaly ace Julio Tavares was in some discomfort following their most recent encounter on Thursday

The pair, 32 and 28 respectively, went on to test positive for Covid shortly thereafter.
Ghana coach Patrice Neveu has refuted his own federation’s claims that the pair are dealing with cardiac issues, telling ESPN: “In the readings, it’s clear that Aubameyang has no cardiac problems
“He [and Lemina] passed PCR tests and they were negative.
“They then did the second lot of exams, cardiac tests, and it seemed as though the pair of them had problems.
“It appears as though the virus has left residue, it’s possible that the illness has left an impact, and two hours before the match, the team doctor and the doctor of CAF were on a phone call with me, and they told me not to play them.”
Aubameyang’s reported Covid-related health issues is another twist in his turbulent 2021/22 season.
The former Borussia Dortmund hitman has struggled in front of goal this campaign, scoring seven goals in 15 appearances for Arsenal.
Aubameyang was stripped of the Arsenal captaincy last December following a series of disciplinary issues and hasn’t played for the north Londoners since.

Sadio Mane gave Senegal a winning start to the competition – but they left it late against Zimbabwe
The tournament follows a familiar format with the 24 nations split in six groups of four – but will teams that finish third make it through to the knockouts?
Does finishing in third place qualify for AFCON last-16?
Similar to how Euro 2021 played out last year, the top two teams from each group will automatically reach the knockout stages.
But the four highest ranked third-place teams will also join them in the last-16 stage.
The bad news for those nations is they will face a side who has finished top of their respective group.
Once the competition reaches the last-16 stage, it’s a simple knockout tournament until we get our finalists on February 6.
There is extra-time and penalties in each tie should they end in a draw, with a third-placed playoff for the two losing semi-finalists.

    4. Zaha is bundled to the ground after beating his man out wide.
Ivory Coast free-kick just on the corner of the box.
Danger for Sierra Leone early on here.
Ivory Coast 0 Sierra Leone 0
    2. Great trickery by Zaha, beating two in the box before going to ground.
No claims by Zaha for anything there.
Replays show the Palace man was anticipating contact that never came.

    1. Sierra Leone get us underway here.
Big shoutout to their manager, John Keister, for only choosing to play three of the five Kamara’s at his disposal.
    Subs:
Kamara, Fofanah, Williams, Kaikai, Kamara, Kargbo, Dunia, Sesay, Mansaray, Kallon, Caulker, Dumbuya
    Sierra Leone team:
Nbalie Kamara, Kakay, Bangura, Caulker, Wright, Quee, Kamara, Bundu, Kamara, Buya Turay, Kamara
    Subs:
Tape, Konate, Kanon, Kossounou, Kouassi, Cornet, Maiga, Gradel, Die, Kouame, Traore, Cisse
    Ivory Coast team:
Sangare, Aurier, Bailly, Deli, Konan, Sangare, Seri, Kessie, Zaha, Haller, Pepe.
    Familiar face
One Sierra Leone player many will recognise is centre-back Steven Caulker.
Played for a host of clubs including QPR, Cardiff City, Liverpool and Tottenham.
Caulker was even capped once by England at full-international.
    Day of rest
When it comes to group formats, getting your business done with games to spare is a big advantage.
The potential for Ivory Coast to be able to rest key players in their next game with a win today against Sierra Leone is huge.
It would make them a real threat to face in the next round.
    Two-time champions
‘Les Elephants’ have won the tournament twice, in 1992 and 2015.
Both times they played Ghana, both times it ended 0-0 AET.
The finals were decided 11-10 and 9-8 on penalties.
    A tale of two pens
In Group F, Gambia have drawn with Mali 1-1.
Both goals came from the penalty spot in a frantic last eleven minutes.
It leaves both sides tied at the top on four points.
    Third time is the charm
Appearing in their third AFCON tournament, Sierra Leone frustrated the defending champions Algeria in their opening game.
The ‘Leone Stars’ have never progressed passed the group phase.
A win today and Sierra Leone will go into their final group game against Equatorial Guinea knowing what they need to do to progress.
    Coasting it
Ivory Coast could seal qualification with a win today.
Having played Sierra Leone seven times before, ‘Les Elephants’ have won six of these encounters, the other being a goalless draw.
    Welcome back AFCON fans
The tournament heats up with every game now with teams able to book their place in the knockout phase.
You can still change your fortunes after a disappointing opening game as Egypt showed us yesterday thanks to a Mohammed Salah goal.
Today, our focus is Ivory Coast vs Sierra Leone
