COMOROS almost pulled off Mission Impossible as they took ake on AFCON hosts Cameroon with no goalkeeper available. The islanders were hit with a wave of Covid, ruling 12 players out of contention for this round of 16 game, including all their keepers.
As a result, left-back Chaker Alhadhur played in goal for the night.
To make matters worse, former Millwall star Nadjim Abdou was sent off after just six minutes, before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave the Indomitable Lions the lead on the half hour mark.
Vincent Aboubakar then doubled the home side’s lead with 20 minutes remaining.
But a stunning free kick from Youssouf N’Changama gave Comoros hope.

    FT: Cameroon 2-1 Comoros
Cameroon made it through to the quarter-finals after beating a depleted but heroic Comoros side at the Paul Biya Stadium.
The Coelacanths were without 12 players, who have contracted Covid-19 as well as manager Amir Abdou, who was replaced by assistant Younes Zerdouk.
The visitors were also playing with left-back Chaker Alhadhur as a makeshift goalkeeper as two of their keepers have coronavirus and the other is injured.
If that wasn’t enough, Comoros lost their captain Nadjim Abdou to a straight red card after he stomped on Moumi Ngamaleu’s ankle from behind in the seventh minute.
Cameroon didn’t really struggle and opened the scoring after 29 minutes when they dispossessed the opposing defence and Vincent Aboubakar teed off Karl Toko Ekambi, who didn’t miss in the area.
Alhadhur should have done better as he watched the weak shot send the ball to his bottom right corner, but then again who can blame him…
Alhadhur stole the headlines in the second half as he denied an unbelievable opportunity for Cameroon on 54 minutes.
Aboubakar broke inside the area from the left and delivered a shot that the Comoros makeshift keeper saved down his bottom left corner with a fine lunge.
Ngamaleu got the rebound but the full-back quickly got back up to his feet and saved his shot with a stunning save.
Comoros’ hopes seemed to have faded away in the 70th minute when Martin Hongla delivered a fantastic low pass to Aboubakar, who ran behind the visitors’ defence.
The Africa Cup of Nations’ leading goalscorer found himself in front of Alhadhur, who should have come off his line earlier, and beat him with a fine finish to score his sixth goal of the tournament.
But Comoros got one in with what will be remembered as their greatest goal so far, which could go down as the best finish of the tournament.
Youssouf M’Changama delivered a stunning long-range free-kick and sent the ball to the top right corner of Onana, who couldn’t do anything about it.

    Chak this out
Cameroon made it to the Africa Cup of Nations’ quarter-finals and were superior to the depleted Comoros.
But the Coelacanths still put together an inspiring performance in what will go down as a historic Copa Africa for them.
The minnows were missing 12 players including their manager Amir Abdou to Covid-19.
They were also without a goalkeeper as two of them have coronavirus and the other is injured.
Thus, left-back Chaker Alhadhur had to start between the sticks in what should have been a very difficult decision for him.
And still, Alhadhur stood his ground and made six saves, which was two more than his counterpart Andre Onana.
The Ajaccio ace even made a brilliant double save on 54 minutes when he denied Vincent Aboubakar and Moumi Ngamaleu’s shots

    What’s next?
Cameroon are through to the Africa Cup of Nations’ quarter-finals after eliminating Comoros.
And the Indomitable Lions are set to face another Copa Africa debutant in the Gambia.
The Scorpions finished second in Group F behind Mali and eliminated Guinea in the Last 16.
Cameroon are now considered among the favourites to win the tournament

The Indomitable Lions registered a total of 19 shots, six of which were on target.

Ahmed Mogni delivered a fantastic shot from the edge of the box but Andre Onana denied it with an incredible lunge to his bottom left corner.

COMOROS’ march to the last-16 of the Africa Cup of Nations has been one of the stories of the tournament. Appearing in their first ever finals, the tiny island nation of less than 900,000 people made it through to the knockout stages after a stunning 3-2 win over Ghana.

They will now face a tough task against Cameroon in the next round – and look set to be without a recognised goalkeeper for the tie.
Why are Comoros playing an outfield player in goal vs Cameroon?
It might have been a fairytale run for Comoros up until now, but unfortunately Covid-19 has swept through their ranks in recent days.
As a result, they have just 12 fit players to choose from for today’s showdown with Cameroon.
And the players out include goalkeepers Moyadh Ousseini, Ali Ahamada and the injured Salim Ben Boina.
Tournament rules state that if a nation has 11 fit players, they MUST fufill the fixture regardless of if they have a goalkeeper available or not.
Therefore Comoros – currently ranked 132nd in the world – will face the five-time holders without a recognised stopper between the sticks.
With the team-sheets now out, left-back Chaker Alhadhur has been named in goal.

Comoros had hoped Ali Ahamada would be able to appear after he tested negative for Covid on Monday morning.
But hopes were dashed just six hours before kick-off, with the CAF confirming that the former Toulouse keeper hadn’t fulfilled their required protocols.
The rules state that a player who tests positive for coronavirus must isolate for five full days before receiving a negative PCR test 48 hours before his side’s next match.
And to make matters even worse, coach Amir Abdou won’t be on the sidelines either after also testing positive.

    FT: Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    IT’S A GIANT KILLING!!!
Tournament favourites Nigeria are out of AFCON!
With players and staff out with Covid, Tunisia were stretched to the max.
    They achieved the unthinkable.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    93. Nigeria burst forward with the lively Sadiq.
He shows some great pace and quick feet, beating two men before heading towards the Tunisia box.
Eventually he is crowded out by sheer numbers.
Good thing no one put in any trailing legs in that box then.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    90. We will have five minutes of added time here.
Immediately Sadiq runs clear and finds himself with a sight of goal.
The angle is tight, the keeper closes it further and Sadiq pulls his shot wide.
Was that THE chance for Nigeria?
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    89. Nigeria knock the ball long but it falls straight to the Tunisia centre back.
They have run out of ideas, the Eagles of Carthage are holding firm.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    87. Ndidi receives the ball a yard or so outside of the centre of the box.
He lets fly with a shot but drags it well wide of the goal.
Ndidi desperately asks for a corner.
    Nothing doing.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    85. This may be the biggest ten minutes or so in recent Tunisian football history.
Do they look to control the game, maybe get another goal or shut up shop?
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    82. Moses Simon takes the free kick and tries to bend it into the left top corner of the goal.
The ball drifts pass a couple of feet wide.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    81. When Tunisia attack they seem to have numbers over all of the time now.
Numerical advantage seems to be tipping the scales more and more.
Nigeria win a free kick on the counter attack.
This is in range of goal.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    79. The Super Eagles seem to be running out of ideas in the final third.
As the clock ticks down, their desperation grows.
Understandably, everything Tunisia now do, takes twice as long.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    77. Tunisia are starting to sense that they are only one goal away from killing this game off.
They seem more at ease laying a glove on their opponent now since the dismissal.
Nigeria win possession and counter quickly but Tunisia keep them out.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    74. Sliti with a shot from outside the box for Tunisia.
He tries to bend it into the far corner but the keeper reads him.
Okoye palms the ball for a corner.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    71. This is a big test for the stand-in Tunisia manager.
Game management can and will decide the outcome of this game.
With a player advantage, fresh legs in the right areas could allow his team to put Nigeria to the sword.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    67. Nigeria come forward and a cross to the back post finds Simon in space.
Taking it down on his thigh, he turns and shoots.
He cannot find a way passed Said in the Tunisia goal.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    66. Alex Iwobi is told by the referee he is retracting his yellow card and giving him a straight red.
The ex-Arsenal man didn’t seem to intend the foul but never the less he did catch his man.
The rulebook does not cater for levels of intent.
    RED CARD!!!
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    63. Nigeria try to press forward, the ball is passed to Iwobi who is penalised.
Replays show as he stepped over the ball to get his body in the way, he studded his man.
VAR has asked the referee to go and look at it.
His initial decision was a yellow card.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    60. When they are not pressed, Tunisia look very comfortable in possession passing the ball about their back four.
It is when they try and push into the Nigerian half that they lose possession and have to regroup.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    57. Looks like Alex Iwobi is going to be joining the game.
Despite being massive favourites to win this game, Nigeria are six places below Tunisia in the current FIFA World rankings.
I am sure that is not based on ten of their first team squad being ill when FIFA made that calculation however.
    Tunisia are 30th, Nigeria 36th.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    54. Retaining possession could be the problem for Tunisia.
Their ‘out-ball’ at the moment is looking for their lone striker with long balls.
He is often unable to gather it in and Nigeria come straight back at them.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    51. For Tunisia, it is important in the next 20 minutes that they keep Nigeria out.
The Super Eagles need to start living up to their name.
The longer they go without scoring, the more they need to throw everything forward, leaving themselves open to the counter attack.
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    49. For the neutral, this is the perfect start to the second half.
Surely this goal will cause Nigeria to wake up?
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1
    47. Msakni does the unthinkable.
His strike out of nothing from 25 yards out does a bit in the air, enough to fool the Nigerian keeper.
Could this be a giant killing?
    GGGGGGGOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL
    Nigeria 0 Tunisia 0
    45. Nigeria get the second half started.
They didn’t register a shot on target in the first half, not the form of champions.
They will be looking to grow into the game more as Tunisia tire.
    HT: Nigeria 0 Tunisia 0
For Tunisia, a job well done.
However, Nigeria’s school report would say ‘must try harder’.

He was stripped of the captaincy by boss Mikel Arteta after returning late from a trip abroad and has since been linked with a shock loan move to Saudi Arabia.
And Gunners midfielder Pepe lifted the lid on Auba’s future when asked by a plucky fan if he would stay or go.
    Pepe replied: “I don’t know. I think he’ll stay, but I don’t know.”
The 26-year-old made the comments while away on Africa Cup of Nations duty with the Ivory Coast.
Aubameyang was forced to return home from the tournament after suffering minor heart problems related to Covid.
He was given the all-clear to return to training on Thursday and was pictured back in the gym in London.

Whether or not he is still in the capital by the end of January remains to be seen.
Saudi side Al Hilal want the 32-year-old on loan – and are said to be willing to pay his £350k-a-week wages in full.
Barcelona have also been mooted as a possible destination for the striker, who has not featured in Arteta’s squad since early December.
His last outing came in a five-minute cameo appearance in the dying moments of the 2-1 defeat by Everton on 6th December.

Looks a tad warmer than Britain with a mild 31 degrees.
    Fireworks time
Not long until kick off now.
For any football tournament, the knockout phase is the is where the drama happens.
No room for error, mistakes are punished.
    Go for it
Often teams can have more of a fear of being eliminated than drive to go for the win from the first whistle.
Burkina Faso have shown us their attacking intent in the group stages.
Let’s hope Gabon have that attacking mindset, we could be blessed with an end-to-end game here today.
    Tough nut to crack
Burkina Faso have only lost once in their last nine AFCON matches while Gabon are unbeaten in six.
A Burkina Faso victory would see them progress to their third AFCON quarter final in only four attempts.
    Familiar face
One player Premier League followers will recognise is Burkina Faso’s captain, Bertrand Traore.
The Stallions skipper playing for Aston Villa also.
Can he lead his country to the quarter finals?
    Make us proud
Interviews with players from both sides show just how much it means to them to do well and make their countries proud at AFCON.
Gabon have won the support of their fans back at this tournament according to coach Patrice Neveu.

After beating Comoros, The Panthers drew with Ghana before an impressive 2-2 draw with Morocco, a game in which they led twice.
    Big chance
While neither of these teams are fancied to win the tournament, qualification to the next round is a huge achievement for both.
The chance to include themselves as one of the ‘Big Eight’ of African football.
Burkina Faso beat Gabon in a friendly prior to AFCON 3-0.
The Stallions will be looking to repeat their 2013 feat of reaching the AFCON final.

These two teams have met a total of 19 times.
Burkina Faso have won 4 times, Gabon winning 8 times and 7 draws.

‘Dramatic’ Afcon lecturer-turned-referee leaves viewers in stitches with incredible sprint during Nigeria victory

A ‘DRAMATIC’ Africa Cup of Nations referee stole the show in Nigeria’s win over Guinea-Bissau. Top Kenyan official Peter Waweru Kamaku had fans on Twitter in stitches for his enthusiastic sprinting and hand gestures.

An Africa Cup of Nations referee stole the show in Nigeria’s win over Guinea-Bissau
Referencing Tom Hanks’ 1994 movie classic Forrest Gump, one wrote: “Run Forrest run.”
Another joked: “This man is running like he’s chasing a taxi.”
One added: “Is that Tom cruise in mission impossible.”
Reacting to Waweru blowing the final whistle, a fan posted: “What a dramatic referee!”
