Arsenal 0 Everton 0: Match ends in controversy after late VAR penalty decision as Gunners drop points in title race

Arsenal blew a huge chance to close the gap on leaders Liverpool with a disappointing draw at home to struggling Everton. The Gunners failed to make the most of their first-half chances and then struggled to create more in the second as visiting goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and his defence held firm.Arsenal limped to a goalless draw with EvertonCredit: GettyArsenal endured a frustrating afternoon in front of goalCredit: ReutersCaptain Martin Odegaard came closest to scoring for the GunnersCredit: GettyGabriel protested after Arsenal were denied a late penaltyCredit: GettyThomas Partey was floored by an awkward tackle from Vitaly MykolenkoCredit: EPAJordan Pickford was at his best to deny the GunnersCredit: GettyAbdoulaye Doucoure missed Everton’s only chance of the matchCredit: RexNews of Diogo Jota’s late equaliser for Liverpool against Fulham was another blow and there were even a few boos at the final whistle.Arsenal ‘keeper David Raya did not have to make a single save. But at the other end his team lacked penetration and composure. On a day when the clubs met for the first time since the death of Kevin Campbell, perhaps it was appropriate that it ended honours even.READ MORE ON ARSENALAs early as the sixth minute, Abdoulaye Doucoure had a great chance to put Everton ahead. But the midfielder took long enough to shoot after being played through by Orel Mangala to allow Gabriel to retreat and make a good block. From that point on, it was all Arsenal.Only a combination of poor finishing, Jordan Pickford and great defending, often by James Tarkowski, kept the first half goalless. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSOdegaard was guilty of sending one presentable opportunity over the bar and another wide.Arsenal’s corners caused chaos, with Pickford forced into unconvincing punches by deliveries from either side by Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.Arsenal could turn to Tierney as Arteta hints at January transfer spree But Pickford produced a fine save in the 29th minute when Saka got the better of Vitalli Mykolenko yet again.Odegaard eased on to the cutback but when his shot was half blocked and deflected by Tarkowski, the England goalkeeper kept it out with his legs.Moments later that good work was almost spoiled when Tarkowski’s attempted header back to his ‘keeper forced Pickford into another panicked punch. In the dying minutes of the half, an error by Jarrad Branthwaite allowed Arsenal to break but Pickford made a smart stop from Gabriel Martinelli. The England ‘keeper was at it again soon after the break, getting down well to stop a Saka volley after a Tarkowski header fell to the Arsenal man.Kai Havertz was unable to get a piercing Mikel Merino pass out of his feet and the frustration of the home crowd started to become audible.Saka continued to have Mykolenko on toast but once more Pickford denied him from a narrow angle after a one-two with Odegaard. It was no surprise that Arteta made a double change just after the hour as he introduced Jorginho and Ethan Nwaneri. But the identity of the players who went off, Declan Rice and Odegaard, raised some eyebrows.Everton boss Dyche soon sent on two reinforcements of his own, in Jesper Lindstrom and Armando Broja. Not much changed. Arteta rolled the dice again with more than 20 minutes to go, sending on Thomas Partey and Gabriel Jesus.Everton’s challenges were starting to get a little more desperate and the first-half siege resumed. From a free kick, Havertz won a flick on but Gabriel was unable to turn the ball goalwards.Down the clock ticked. Saka apologised after poorly heading a cross by final substitute Leandro Trossard when Havertz was behind him waiting to connect. When Partey went down in the box, the home fans screamed for a penalty. What a save!!Bukayo Saka must have thought he had broken the deadlock seconds into the second half, but his volley is somehow clawed out by Jordan Pickford. It was a scrappy build-up from kick-off, but when a loose header from Branwaite inside the area went up instead of out, Saka was on to it in a flash. The shot wasn’t the cleanest but still looked destined for the bottom corner until Pickford’s heroics.Copy linkCopiedKick-off – Arsenal 0-0 Everton46. Yet.Copy linkCopiedHalf-time – Arsenal 0-0 EvertonCraig Pawson calls time on the opening 45 minutes, and there’s very little to report.Everton have not had an attempt since Abdoulaye Doucoure’s fifth minute shot that was brilliantly blocked behind by the returning Gabriel.Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli have both had chances for the hosts, only to find Jordan Pickford in inspired form. Myles Lewis-Skelly undoubtedly has a bright future ahead of him, but it’s doubtful he’ll ever take a worse throw-in than this. The ball slips out of the teenager’s hands, bobbles about a bit and then drops on his head, resulting in a most embarrassed and surprised look from the left-back.Copy linkCopiedArsenal 0-0 Everton42. Pickford denies Martinelli!A sloppy pass from Branthwaite is pounced upon by Rice in midfield, who quickly moves the ball on to the Brazilian via Havertz.A nice switch of feet by Martinelli in the box takes him away from Young, but his follow-up shot is well blocked by the Everton goalkeeper at the near post.Copy linkCopiedArsenal 0-0 Everton40. Ashley Young takes an age to take a throw-in deep in the Arsenal half. It’s hard to know if it’s blatant time-wasting or if the 39-year-old right-back is just feeling his age.Copy linkCopiedArsenal 0-0 Everton38. The home fans try to lift the tempo of their team. While in complete control of the game, they are not putting Everton under real pressure – and the visitors remain content to mop up the little that is coming their way.Copy linkCopiedFrom Dan King at the EmiratesThe second enjoyable contest so far was between the fans. The home crowd told Jordan Pickford he was “just a s**t Aaron Ramsdale” and the travelling Blues responded by reminding everyone that their man is “England’s No 1”.Even better is the way Everton boss Sean Dyche keeps moaning to the fourth official and nearside assistant referee about the decisions that keep going against his side. The Arsenal fans take every chance to mock his gesticulations and rants. The news from Anfield must have filtered through and it feels like an Arsenal goal is coming.Copy linkCopiedArsenal 0-0 Everton35. Nice work from Saka to pick out Odegaard’s run into the area with a clever reverse pass. The captain then tries to work one of his own, but it’s clattered behind by Branthwaite. The visitors certainly aren’t afraid to give up corners to the Premier League’s set-piece kings. The home fans get excited as another corner is won. This time it’s on the right and taken by Saka, but the delivery is unusually poor and easily headed clear.Copy linkCopiedArsenal 0-0 Everton15. Up the other end of the pitch, a Martinelli effort is blocked behind for Arsenal’s first corner. The Gunners pack the area as Rice prepares the set-piece, an inswinger that is eventually punched away by Pickford.Copy linkCopiedArsenal 0-0 Everton7. The first attempt of the game comes courtesy of Everton’s Doucoure. The midfielder somehow finds himself in space behind the Arsenal defence, and it requires an excellent recovery from Saliba in order to turn it behind for a corner.Copy linkCopied More

Fuming Ukrainian FA blast Fifa over ‘unacceptable error’ during World Cup 2026 qualifying draw

THE Ukrainian FA sent a furious letter to Fifa and Uefa complaining about an “unacceptable error” during the World Cup qualifying draw. Ukraine learnt who they will face to try and book their spot at the 2026 tournament in North America.
