‘Not for £100million either’ – Gary Lineker reveals he turned down reality TV offer following Match of the Day exit

GARY LINEKER has revealed that he has turned down multiple reality TV shows since it was announced that he would be leaving the BBC. Lineker, 64, will step down from his post as host of Match of the Day at the end of the season. Lineker’s tenure as Match of the Day frontman is coming to an endCredit: BBCThe presenter has always made his political views public, sometimes to his detrimentHe will be replaced by the trio of Kelly Cates, Gabby Logan, and Mark Chapman. He will, however, be kept on to lead the Beeb’s coverage of the 2026 World Cup in the US and Mexico. He will also continue to front the broadcaster’s FA Cup offerings. In an interview with The Times, Lineker admitted that he had several offers from reality TV shows to appear. Read more in FootballAccording to Lineker, the producers of Big Brother tapped up his agent to enquire about the former England striker’s interest in appearing on the programme. They were met with a £100million price tag, although Lineker revealed that he “wouldn’t have done it for £100million either,” with the sum being “a little over their budget”. In the interview, Lineker, who earned 80 caps for his country, scoring 48 goals, said that he had become quite the chef in his spare time. That had also led to offers from culinary shows. Most read in FootballBEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UKHe insisted: “I’ve actually been offered to do cookery programmes, but I don’t want to, because whilst I’m a very keen cook and I think I’m a good cook, I’m not Gordon f***ing Ramsay.”Lineker believes that he is a better presenter now than he ever has been, with his podcast “The Rest is Football” helping him behind the microphone and in front of the camera.Lineker has been the subject of bids from several showsCredit: AlamyHowever, that venture did not help sway the BBC’s decision to keep him on. Arsenal files: How Gunners snubbed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia transfer as emergency William Saliba replacement is prepared

ARSENAL passed up the opportunity to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia four years ago because of doubts about how good he would become.According to a former Gunners scout, the Georgian superstar’s ceiling was something that divided opinion at the club.Khvicha Kvaratskhelia caused Arsenal problems throughout their Champions League tie with PSG – but he could have been playing for the GunnersCredit: GettyKvaratskhelia was playing for Rubin Kazan at the time and was beginning to attract the interest of top European clubs.Napoli took a risk by paying £10m for the winger in 2022 — a fortnight after Arsenal shelled out £3.5million for Marquinhos. The Brazilian never made the grade at Emirates Stadium while Kvaratskhelia made a stunning impact in Naples. He helped to end the Serie A club’s 33-year title drought in his first season, landing the league’s MVP award as well as being named UEFA’s Champions League Young Player of the Season. And in the week that the Georgian played a major role in destroying the Gunners’ Champions League dreams, it has emerged that Arsenal were aware of him well before Napoli or PSG.Tomasz Pasieczny, who scouted for Arsenal in Eastern Europe for seven years until 2021, initially spotted Kvaratskhelia by chance. He told weszlo.com: “Georgia’s youth team visited Poland, there was a qualifying tournament.“My job was to pay attention to other teams, but when you saw them — Khvicha and Zuriko Davitashvili — we had long discussions with other scouts about who was better.“Then I watched both of them in Russia, so I followed their development for a long time.“I was at the old stadium in Kazan for a match with Dynamo Moscow, Khvicha came off the bench, made two completely unsuccessful dribbles and the fans reacted very negatively.“At that stage he couldn’t cope with it. Every next move was bad, from start to finish. He got lost, the ball bounced off him, you could see that he had lost his confidence.“He overcame it, but if it had continued, it would have been a problem. Being affected by a few thousand people in Kazan doesn’t lead to a good rating…”Everyone knew he would be mega good, but they wondered how good. Whether he would be the absolute top or a bit lower”Few had any doubts that he wouldn’t be anything at all. However, at that stage I had to write how it is, draw conclusions, write where the problems are.”Pasieczny takes pride in the fact that as many as eight of the Arsenal side that overcame Real Madrid in the quarter-finals were signed under his watch, although he did reveal he was totally convinced by only seven. He added: “Leandro Trossard — I thought he was not a player for Arsenal, but after his time at Brighton it turned out very well.“I simply thought he was a player for a good English club, but not a top one. Something was missing, a bit of quality. Trossard was versatile, but he was a bit short of the top level.“Nevertheless, I will give credit to the fact that he has proved to be very useful. “Of course, it is difficult to judge now whether he reached this level thanks to Brighton, or whether I was wrong and he was ready then.”SECOND CHANCEJAKUB KIWIOR seemed certain to be heading out of the exit door at the Emirates this summer. But the Polish defender has impressed manager Mikel Arteta so much that he could still have a future at Arsenal.Kiwior, 25, has not exactly been a blazing success since his £21million move from Italian side Spezia in January 2023.Although he has made just 25 Premier League appearances, he has improved recently and impressed when filling in for the injured Gabriel Magalhaes. While there could be several arrivals and departures at Arsenal this summer, Arteta might consider that Kiwior is a useful squad player.Although the centre-half has been looking at leaving, he could now be persuaded to stay.Asked about Kiwior by a Polish journalist at his pre-match press conference before the Champions League second leg tie at PSG.Arteta said: “He deserves a lot of credit because he hasn’t played too much for many months and sadly, he’s been thrown into the difficult situations at the highest level, playing against the best opponents.“That is tough when you haven’t had the physical rhythm or the confidence to do it so he’s been exceptional.”Jakub Kiwior has fought his way back into Mikel Arteta’s plansCredit: GettyTOUGH SALKIWIOR’s resurgence could prove timely, with Real Madrid preparing a summer move to prise William Saliba out of Arsenal. The Spanish giants, set to be under new management with Xabi Alonso lined up to replace Carlo Ancelotti, are ready to jettison former Chelsea ace Antonio Rudiger after his latest disciplinary flare-up brought a six-match ban for throwing ice at a referee from the bench.France star Saliba is their prime target, despite the fact that the defender has two years left on his Gunners deal.Arsenal are keen to open talks on a contract extension for Saliba, 24, in a bid to tie him to the club long-term.But Madrid’s appeal to any world star has not abated, proven by the recent captures of Saliba’s France team-mate Kylian Mbappe and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.Expect to read suggestions that he is “keen on a move” from Spain any time soon. The softening up process is about to begin.Real Madrid are desperate to lure William Saliba to the clubCredit: GettyFAN-NING THE FLAMESARSENAL had 2000 supporters inside the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night and each of them were handed a free red and white scarf by the club.Sadly, they did not have too much to cheer about during the game. The away supporters were then kept at their seats for an hour after the final whistle and after being told they could leave, were then held in a separate area for a further 15 minutes.Meanwhile, while the Londoners headed back to their hotels or for a quiet drink, it was all going off along the Champs-Elysees.While PSG fans flocked to the famous street in their thousands, there was a car-ramming incident with three people injured as the celebrations got out of hand. The Parisian supporters were so angry that they set the car on fire.Arsenal fans were kept inside the Parc des Princes for more than an hour after the match had finishedCredit: AlamyCUP A LOAD OF THATARSENAL look like a team desperate for the campaign to end, and desperate for a summer break with their silverware dreams crushed.Thoughts turn immediately to transfers. Owners Stan and Josh Kroenke are set to provide a hefty kitty — around £200m — to Mikel Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta to bring in several world class players in an attempt to end 19 years of league title hurt. And the Club World Cup could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the Gunners – forcing them to take action in the market sooner rather than later and giving them a better chance of landing their top targets.Because of Gianni Infantino’s new ludicrous, US-based champions of champions competition – from June 14 to July 13 – the transfer window is going to be split in two this summer. It will open between June 1 and June 10, then close for five days before running again from June 16 until September 1.That first 10-day period should see plenty of teams – including Prem Club World Cup attendees Manchester City and Chelsea and other European sides – attempt to cash in quickly so they can take their new purchases to the States. This will no doubt encourage Arsenal to do the same, to get ahead of their rivals and get some early business done before the ‘second’ window.SunSport understands that Arteta is keen to get deals done earlier than usual this summer, especially after the January debacle that saw them spend too long on long-shot targets that they were not able to get over the line.Talks with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in mid-January came to nothing and then a late £40m bid for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins went the same way.It left Arsenal dangerously short up top, and has ultimately cost them both domestically and in Europe. It is understood that the first 10 days of the summer window should see £51m midfield signing Martin Zubimendi join from Real Sociedad. And significant ground work will also be made in getting an elite No.9 nailed down.Especially as Sesko, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak are in high demand by Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona.Arteta is also known to prefer having all his new signings through the door and fully acclimatised BEFORE their pre-season tour, which this summer is in Singapore and Hong Kong from July 19 to July 31.So, do not be surprised if Arsenal decide to avoid a long, drawn-out bidding war for Isak and go straight for the slightly cheaper options of Sesko or Gyokeres, or even Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike. There is hope that while City and Chelsea battle it out across the pond in a gruelling competition, Arsenal can welcome a few new faces to London Colney and get to work straight away.Martin Zubimendi could join Arsenal within weeksCredit: GettyIN GOOD MIKNOT only has Mikel Merino been a saviour of sorts on the pitch – filling in as a striker these past few months – but he has also pleased the club with his willingness to engage in media activities, even after defeats.Following Arsenal’s first leg 1-0 semi-final defeat to PSG at the Emirates, the Spaniard faced reporters in the mixed zone, and he did the same minutes after their 2-1 second leg loss in Paris. He spoke of the need to learn from the mistakes, and insisted that this group would be ready to go again and win major trophies next year.SunSport understands that Merino has become a reliable and trusted voice to sum up the emotions of the dressing room and to give positive, reassuring messages to journalists post-match, especially when results have not gone to plan.It may sound like a small thing, but Merino’s commitment to this has not only left a good mark on reporters, but has also taken the weight off his teammates in these moments.Arteta knew Merino would be a valuable squad member, and he is proving just that in more ways than one.Mikel Merino is proving his worth off the pitch as well as on itCredit: Getty More

Enzo Maresca’s tweaks highlight why TWO first-team stars must be replaced to turn Chelsea into title contenders

CHELSEA have suddenly refound their form, just at the perfect time of the season.Enzo Maresca’s Blues are on a run of five wins in a row in all competitions, and fly to Newcastle on Sunday for a key clash in the fight for Champions League places.Enzo Maresca is enjoying life again, on the back of five straight winsChelsea star Cole Palmer refound his goal touch against LiverpoolIt’s been a disappointing season for Chelsea to this point, with their early title charge falling to pieces at the start of 2025.Maresca’s rigid tactics came under fire from Blues fans who have grown used to winning trophies under Roman Abramovich. Some have even started calling for another change in manager this summer, just 12 months after former Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino was ruthlessly shown the door. But in recent weeks the form has returned, not least from talisman Cole Palmer who ended his 18-game goal drought with a penalty against champions Liverpool last weekend.read more on footballMaresca’s tactical changes – partly due to the timely return to fitness of midfielder Romeo Lavia – have been key to Chelsea’s upturn in form. But Chelsea’s improvement has also shone a light on their weaknesses. In particular, there are two stars of the side – who start every game when fit – who are holding the team back.Chelsea must look to buy two new players in the summer to be considered genuine title contenders next season. Most read in FootballJoin SUN CLUB for the Chelsea Files every Tuesday plusin-depth coverage and exclusives from Stamford BridgeMoises Caicedo as an inverting fullbackOne of the most interesting tactical tweaks from Marcesca was in using the Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo as a right-back in their back four system. While Caicedo plays as a more traditional fullback when Chelsea are defending he then comes inside into the midfield more consistently when they win back possession. This means that, along with Lavia who is back in the team after long spells out with injury, Chelsea have two strong players at the base of their midfield with Enzo Fernandez then being free to push higher. What we are seeing now from Chelsea is a box midfield with Lavia and Caicedo at the base and Fernandez and Palmer in higher positions. Caicedo’s intelligence and game understanding are key for Chelsea in allowing this to happen. When coming inside Caicedo is difficult to pick up and regularly he is able to receive the ball in space before then being able to pass the ball forward.Caicedo has inverted inside and as such Chelsea have overloaded the pitch centrally. This allows them to progress the ball and move the ball forward through the middleCaicedo’s touch map shows him at right back and in midfieldCaicedo was a nominal right back but played further up the pitch than Lavia and Fernandez on average v LiverpoolMaresca has done a great job so far in terms of teaching Caicedo the timing and the triggers to move from the right-back position into the midfield. The Ecuadorian international has always been a player who is good against the ball and in duels. But his ability to come inside and affect the game has been one of the keys so far for Chelsea as they have improved.Palmer and Fernandez as high 8’sAs part of the decision from Maresca to start moving Caicedo inside and into a more structured midfield role has meant a change to the role of Fernandez. While early in his career at Chelsea we saw Fernandez used as more of a deep midfielder as a deep 8 or even as a 6, the World Cup winner has been unlocked since he has been moved more consistently into higher positions.Palmer has also seen his role change across the season having initially been used for the most part as a narrow right-winger.Now he is now being positioned more naturally as a central attacking midfielder – almost as a No10. With Fernandez being pushed higher when Chelsea are in possession we are now seeing the two midfielders positioned almost on the same line as advanced or attacking 8’sCaicedo moves centrally which allows Fernandez to pull out wider, and Palmer drops deeper to pick up the ball. Chelsea are making it very difficult for the opposition to pick up their men and defend properlyFernandez and Palmer were key men against LiverpoolIn creating a structure with two deep midfielders and two advanced midfielders Chelsea are creating situations where they can overload the majority of opposition midfielders. For the most part opposition teams will play with either two or three players in the central midfield positions. As such Chelsea are able to control the game when they are in possession.Maintaining width in the attackThe width as Chelsea attack at the moment under Maresca is very much being provided by two wingers positioned high and wide in the front three. This means the roles of the two fullbacks for Chelsea are slightly different – Caicedo on the right coming into the midfield while Cucurella on the left sits deep on the same line as the central defenders. The movements of these fullbacks allows Chelsea to form a solid structure in the middle as they look to control the game and build their attacks. It is ahead of them that we see the wide attackers stretch the pitch out with their positioning. They want to stay on the outside of the Chelsea structure, either hard on the line, or in the channels, to stretch out the pitch. This positioning of the wide attackers allows the movement of Palmer and Fernandez high as they have room to move into as Chelsea attack.Chelsea’s wingers stay wide for most of the gameChelsea win possession back early against Liverpool. Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto are positioned on the outside of the attack and Palmer and Fernandez are able to push higherBoth Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto are able to play wide and to dominate in 1v1 situations against opposition fullbacks. This forces the opposition to defend wide with their fullbacks and this, in turn, allows the attacking midfielders for Chelsea to move into more advanced positions in order to support the attack.Maresca needs a better forward optionHowever there is still much more than needs to be addressed.Firstly Maresca can improve this current Chelsea team with a better striker. While Nicolas Jackson is still only 23 and he has suffered from injuries this season, we believe that with a stronger profile playing as the No9 we could see Chelsea become a much more dominant attacking side.Jackson has the profile to be the advanced forward type that will look to routinely run in behind the defensive line. But at the moment he lacks the consistency of the quality of his attacking moments.Jackson wants to make the run beyond the last line of the Liverpool defence. The problem is that he is not at the level required to take advantage of the more direct pass that Chelsea will look to make from their defensive lineNicolas Jackson divides Chelsea fansAnd his technical flaws means that when Chelsea do look to go longer to release his runs often the ball can bounce away from him. This suggests Chelsea will be active in the striker market with a number of interesting profiles of players that could fit their needs and allow them to be more effective in the attacking phase.More ball progression from the defenceAlso for this new-look Chelsea system to be most effective they need to make sure that they are able to move the ball quickly through the thirds of the field. The issue that they have at the moment is that their central defenders and their left back in Cucurella typically form a back three when they are in possession and their ball progression and forward passing can be slightly slow. The key for Maresca is to find a way to ensure that the ball is moved quickly from the first line, the defensive line, into the midfield and into the areas of the pitch where Chelsea have the most control and dominance over the opposition. One of the biggest issues that we see in this regard for Chelsea is that Cucurella is too safe in his possession as he routinely turns down the option to progress the ball.Cucurella has become a key man, but is he also a weak link?Cucurella receives the ball across the defensive line and if he opens out and then plays forward then the ball will be in a more dangerous position. Instead he passes back across the defensive lineCucurella’s pass map in the 3-1 win over LiverpoolWhile we believe that Chelsea will look to recruit a new striker we also expect them to look to recruit a player in the left-back role who can play as a left-sided central defender in possession and who is more aggressive in moving the ball forward. Typically the wide central defenders in a back three will be more progressive passers anyway but too often we see Marc Cucurella slow down the attack for Chelsea.ConclusionOver the last two seasons the clubs has been focussed on player recruitment with the new ownership group spending more than £1billion to sign an army of young players to long term contracts. Read More on The SunThis season has been another rollercoaster ride for Chelsea and their fans but they are positioned, with the season drawing to a close, to qualify for Champions League. Maresca has shown enough to suggest that he will still be in charge at Chelsea next season and it will be interesting to see the tactical tweaks that he will make to take this team to the next level. Chelsea ratings vs Djurgarden as Dewsbury-Hall makes most of rare start but Sancho should have done betterCHELSEA coasted their way into the Conference League final thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s first-half finish.Enzo Maresca’s men had done the difficult work last week with a thumping first-leg win.But Dewsbury-Hall gave the home fans something to cheer about with a smart finish.Tyrique George fed the midfielder, who cut inside Djurgarden defender Miro Tenho before slotting home. From there, Chelsea were going through the motions – and no wonder given how poor their Swedish visitors were. Here’s how SunSport’s Jack Rosser rated the Chelsea stars… More

Why bookies are bonkers for making Pochettino favourite to replace Postecoglou at Tottenham when ‘natural fit’ a far easier deal

Still, despite his season at Chelsea, loves Tottenham Hotspur.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLAnd there have been times over the past six years when you could see him rocking up back at Hotspur Way if the offer had come. But Poch is not going to walk out on his £4.5m per year job with the United States now, not with only 13 months to go before the Stars and Stripes are draped all over the World Cup Finals.Whether or not Daniel Levy wants to reopen the door – some might argue spin the revolving door given that Ange Postecoglou’s departure will spend the end of the fourth permanent reign since Pochettino was fired – the logistics are against it taking place.Levy and Spurs cannot afford a repeat of the 2021 debacle that ended with Nuno Espirito Santos appointed after all the other preferred candidates turned the club down. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERSIf and when – and it’s surely a when – Ange gets the boot, there HAS to be a near-instant replacement announced. That’s despite the Aussie setting up a Europa League final against Manchester United that guarantees the winner a place in next season’s Champions League.’I’d dive head first through a brick wall for him’ – Ange Postecoglou’s rallying speech reduces Tottenham fans to tearsIt is suggested that Pochettino’s US deal has a £20m set of golden handcuffs attached. That’s simply too great a price for Spurs to pay, especially if they have no European football to plug the financial gap next term.Poch has been criticised for the lack of development of his side, humiliated into fourth place in March’s Nations League Finals when they lost to both Panama and Canada. But US Soccer have invested too much in him to even consider a change of jockey before the Concacaf Gold Cup they are hosting in the summer.Drawn alongside Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti and guest side Saudi Arabia, it is almost inconceivable that the US will not at least make the last eight, played at the end of June, just days before Spurs will be due back for the start of pre-season training.Even if the US blow up again, Levy and Tottenham cannot wait that long to have a manager in place. So where might a punter look to have a dip in the market?Managers who could replace Big AngeThere’s plenty of big names in the running…Mauricio PochettinoAndoni IraolaMarco SilvaThomas FrankEdin TerzicXavi HernandezOliver GlasnerLevy and his boardroom colleagues will have had their own thoughts – and have unsurprisingly kept them private. But it does seem that Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola has fallen down the list of potential runners and riders – his style and approach is perhaps too similar to the Postecoglou model.Fulham’s Marco Silva and Thomas Frank at Brentford are two genuine contenders already in the capital, while former Dortmund boss Edin Terzic now has a London-based agent looking out for his interests. There was a market plunge for Xavi Hernandez a few weeks ago, too. That would be an ambitious move, for sure. But a risky one.Perhaps, then, the man who will be heading to the away dug-out and dressing room on Sunday might be emerging as the best bet for the home versions next term.Oliver Glasner made an instant impact when he replaced Roy Hodgson in 2024 and has bounced back from a rocky start to this season – when his side struggled to cope with the absence of Michael Olise and injuries hampering Eberezi Eze and Adam Wharton – to lead the Eagles to the FA Cup Final.Austrian Glasner’s preferred back three system might seem a natural fit for a club whose full-backs are all natural wing-backs while he has also tasted European success guiding Frankfurt to the Europa League in 2022.Would Glasner swap Selhurst for Tottenham High Road?
