Premier League panel reveal why referee was RIGHT to send off Arsenal star Declan Rice against Brighton

DECLAN RICE was CORRECTLY dismissed in Arsenal’s draw with Brighton – according to the Prem’s expert panel of former players, coaches and referees.PGMOL’s “Key Match Incident” team reviews every major decision across each of the Prem’s 380 games.Arsenal star Declan Rice was controversially sent off against BrightonCredit: ReutersBut PGMOL’s ‘Key Match Incident’ concluded the decision to send Rice off was correctCredit: ReutersRice has been suspended ahead of the North London Derby clash with TottenhamCredit: RexAnd while Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said he was “amazed” that Rice was dismissed by Chris Kavanagh after kicking the ball away to prevent Joel Veltman taking a free-kick for the Seagulls, the call was confirmed by a unanimous verdict.Rice, who had been booked for a first-half foul, picked up a second yellow card in a decision that changed the game, with Joao Pedro equalising for Brighton.Despite Arteta’s complaints, the England midfielder went in front of the TV cameras to hold up his hands about the card. And the five-man panel agreed he had acted in a “clear, deliberate and impactful” manner, which warranted Kavanagh’s decision.Read More on ArsenalAll the other crunch calls during the weekend before the international break were backed by the panel. But there was only a 3-2 agreement that referee Jarred Gillett was right not to give Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes a second yellow card when he fouled Chelsea’s Cole Palmer from behind in the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.Meanwhile, Prem statistics also show that the Rice decision was keeping with League policies.PGMOL stats show that, rather than a rare occurrence, Rice’s caution was part of a pattern of offences which have been punished more severely over the past two seasons. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSIn the 2022-23 season, there were 118 cards issued for the offence but that almost doubled to 215 yellow cards last term.Rice is now set to miss Sunday’s crunch North London Derby at Tottenham.England fans baffled as Declan Rice appears to refuse captain’s armband against former team IrelandThe Arsenal star had a slow start to the season and was sent off for the first time in his 245-game career in the Prem. England manager Lee Carsley says new-found fame is getting him stopped at coffee shops by ‘random’ people

LEE CARSLEY is getting used to the buck stopping with him for England — thanks to fans advising him in the queue for coffee. The 50-year-old takes charge of his first home game as interim boss against Finland tonight.Lee Carsley admits fans are now stopping him at coffee shopsCredit: GettyAnd the scrutiny is a step up from his role as England Under-21s chief. But the Brummie insists not much has changed — barring supporters giving him their two pennies’ worth at service stations.Carsley said: “I’ve had a bit more attention from random people who shout, ‘Make sure you pick so-and-so’ when I get to Starbucks at a services. But very respectful and things are pretty normal still.”The interim boss reckons it is easy to stay grounded as his life experience is similar to that of many everyday people.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLReferencing the care he and wife Louisa provide to son Conor, who has Down’s Syndrome, the ex-Everton midfielder added: “I definitely live in the real world.“My house is very grounded. TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD – 7Looked more at home at right-back compared to the disastrous midfield experiment at the Euros.Stunning pass in a move that eventually led to the first goal. He has to remain as England’s right-back. MARC GUEHI – 7Enjoyed a decent Euros and switched over to the right of central defence as John Stones was named on the bench.Looks increasingly like a top-drawer defender. HARRY MAGUIRE – 7Was left devastated after failing to make the Euro 2024 squad but he has enjoyed a decent start with Manchester United and looked solid here. When he is not in the team, England do miss his aerial presence. 7LEVI COLWILL – 7Second appearance for England and was deployed at left-back.Unlike the Euros, England have much better balance in defence with a natural left footer in this position. 7DECLAN RICE – 9Enjoyed an absolute stormer in what could have been a difficult afternoon.Booed every time he touched the ball, the former Irish international quietened the boisterous home fans with a brilliant finish although refused to celebrate. He then set up the second for Grealish. KOBBIE MAINOO – 7Fits perfectly into Carsley’s style of play. Some of his passing was excellent, particularly in the final third of the pitch, and this included his part in the outstanding second goal. BUKAYO SAKA – 7Enjoying a terrific start to the season with Arsenal – he has been nominated as their player of the month – and played with plenty of confidence here. Was involved in the second goal.JACK GREALISH – 8Left out of the Euros squad, but loved every minute of this.A decent finish for 2-0 and unlike Rice, celebrated in front of the visiting fans by raising both arms in triumph.ANTHONY GORDON – 6Looked really lively early on but faded. He should have put England ahead when clean through but was lucky that seconds later, Rice hammered his shot into the corner. 6HARRY KANE – 6Missed with a header and despite working hard, did not actually have that many chances despite England having so much possession. Both Alexander Isak & Anthony Gordon among most transferred-out players ahead of Gameweek 4

BOTH Alexander Isak (£5m) and Anthony Gordon (£4.5m) are among the top five most transferred-out Dream Team players ahead of Gameweek 4.The former scored his first goal of the season just prior to the international break when Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-1 at St James’ Park. The Sweden striker has also provided two assists already in 2024/25.Isak still features in 27.5% of teamsCredit: GettyIsak’s tally of 25 points may pale in comparison to the humongous totals of Erling Haaland (£8.8m) and Mohamed Salah (£7.3m) – who have plundered 59 and 45 points respectively – but it’s a healthy return from just three Gameweeks.Even so, only Declan Rice (£3.9m) and Phil Foden (£6.2m) have been ditched by more Dream Team managers during the break. As for Gordon, he has mustered 22 points to date; a respectable tally but one that doesn’t quite align with his immense pre-season popularity. The England international took Bournemouth for 13 points in Gameweek 2 with a lively showing but he’s made little impact in his other three outings so far.As a result he’s currently the fourth-most transferred-out asset ahead of Gameweek 4.Gordon produced a fine showing against the Cherries but has struggled for points elsewhereCredit: AlamyOn the surface, this may seem rather curious.Newcastle are fifth in the table, undefeated in all competitions, and due to face 18th-placed Wolves on Sunday. Most read in FootballOnly Everton have conceded more league goals than Gary O’Neil’s side at this stage – it would not come as a surprise if Isak and Gordon prospered at Molineux. However, dig a little deeper and it’s easier to understand why so many gaffers are changing strategy.Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOWThe Magpies are one of just seven teams without two fixtures to fulfil in Gameweek 4.After a full round of Premier League games, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa begin their Champions League campaigns in midweek with a further nine top-flight clubs in Carabao Cup action. This is partially readdressed in Gameweek 5 when Eddie Howe’s side will be among the ten teams with two fixtures: Fulham (a) and AFC Wimbledon (a).However, Gameweek 6 brings a meeting with Manchester City, which is about as unfavourable as it gets.Newcastle lack European commitments this seasonCredit: GettyThe broader picture is that Newcastle will play four games across the next three Gameweeks, including that tricky match-up with Pep Guardiola’s machine. For comparison, Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Villa, Spurs and Man United will fulfil SIX fixtures each in the same time frame.Fixture count isn’t the only thing to consider when making transfers but it’s certainly an important factor.Additionally, while Newcastle’s results have been healthy enough, their performances haven’t been all that convincing.READ MORE SUN STORIESIn fact, only Ipswich have registered fewer shots than Howe’s troops while no team have faced more shots.Isak and Gordon are excellent players but it’s hard to argue against gaffers who are now looking elsewhere.BetMGM sign up offerBetMGM: Get £60 in free bets — HERE*New cust only. 7 days to opt in by placing a £10 qualifying bet at 1/1 (2.0) odds or greater to receive 6x Free Bets: 1 x £10 horse racing, 2 x £10 Bet Builder, 2 x £10 Acca and 1 x £10 football. 7 day expiry.
