Josh Catterall ready to dive back into the deep end vs Josh Taylor after ice-cold swims with fiancee Lauren

JACK CATTERALL has no problem diving back into the deep end with Josh Taylor — after enjoying ice-cold swims among monster fish and shipwrecks. The Chorley super-lightweight, 29, felt robbed of his undisputed dream last February, when the Tartan Tornado claimed one of the most controversial wins in British boxing history.

Catteral lost to Josh Taylor in their first bout back in September but the cards were very controversialCredit: Kenny Ramsay
Now the rematch is finally sorted for March 4 back in Glasgow — with only the WBO belt on the line after Catterall’s rival was forced to vacate the other three.
But Catterall’s painful year out of the ring helped him find a chilly hobby that lifted him off rock bottom and helped focus his mind on revenge.
The 26-1 southpaw said: “A lot of my friends do triathlons and have always used a lovely little swimming spot a couple of miles from where we live.
“Not long after the Taylor fight, I decided to go down and have a swim with them and just haven’t stopped.
    read more on sport
“We are in there by 6am, finished by 7am, and then our days start.
“I see it as a mental exercise because there is nothing quite like being in that freezing water at 6am to focus your mind and block everything else out.
“When you drop into that water, first you worry about catching your breath and controlling your breathing.
“I’ve gone a couple of times without a wetsuit, just in trunks, but not since it turned cold. Yet the idea you put a wetsuit on and suddenly don’t feel the freezing cold is a total myth.”

Hypothermia is not all Catterall has to worry about when taking a plunge down at Eccleston Delph.
He said: “It’s a scuba diving centre so underneath where we swim you see sunken tanks, planes, even a children’s playground and wrecks to explore.
“There are also some big fish down there, 20 and 30-year-old koi carps.
“One summer my sister Milly came to watch and bought fish-food pellets.
“As I was swimming, she followed me and threw them in at me — attracting all the fish to bite around me.”
Milly is not the only woman in Catterall’s life to have taken a fleeting interest in his chilly passion.
I see it as a mental exercise because there is nothing quite like being in that freezing water at 6am to focus your mind and block everything else out.Jack Catterall
He added: “I took my missus Lauren. She jumped in with no goggles, head never went in the water, she refused to look  at anything below the surface,  got out and said, ‘Never again’.
“She’s never been back since but I give her plenty of credit for trying.”
After a no-frills start to his career — trying to sell tickets around the leisure centres of Manchester, Blackpool and Bolton with southpaw skills but no knockout power — Catterall should have enjoyed a Rocky-style coronation.
The 9-1 underdog outfoxed the excellent Taylor, who cannot be blamed for the bizarre scorecards. But two of the officials put in atrocious marks that still demand a better explanation from the British Boxing Board of Control.
Catterall somehow kept his head after the highly controversial split decision, while respected trainer and fireman Nigel Travers hit the roof and delivered a string of scathing interviews.
Because the promise that Travis and hundreds of other uncelebrated boxing coaches all over the country use to rescue wayward youths was smashed to smithereens live on Sky Sports.
Following an investigation and amid a huge backlash from fight fans, one of the judges that night was demoted by BBBofC bosses — but the result stood.
And Catterall explained: “Nigel is in the Moss Side gym with his amateurs seven days a week. He is in Salford with his pros five days a week. Friday and Saturday nights he is at shows.
“Everything he does is about getting kids off the street and helping them better themselves.

“I have been one of those kids since I was ten — and youngsters now look up to me, see what I have achieved and want to target the same.
“So the Taylor result is just really difficult to explain. If you tell  kids  that  hard work, dedication, honesty  and integrity will get  rewarded — and  then they see what happened to me — it undoes a lot of the work.” More

How Mike Tyson grew 20-INCH neck by 18 through gruelling training technique that Anthony Joshua now copies

And Tyson, the youngest heavyweight of all time aged 20, was no different in the gym.
He used a technique called neck bridges, which involve a rocking back and forth motion.
Even current boxing stars like Anthony Joshua, 33, have used the old school technique.
Tyson, now 55, remains one of the most celebrated fighters of all time, retiring in 2005.

He did make a shock comeback in 2020 and drew with fellow legend Roy Jones Jr, 53, in an exhibition bout.
Tyson, who looks unlikely to fight again, used to consume anywhere from 3,000-4,000 calories a day.
He started his day early with a three to five-mile jog around 4am.
After two hours he would come back, shower and go to sleep again until about 10am, when it was time for breakfast.

By midday he would be in the gym for his first boxing session, which was normally ten straight rounds of sparring.
Tyson then did three sets of Calisthenics, including squats, tricep extensions, pushups, shrugs with 30 kilos and neck crunches.
Afterwards, at 2pm the heavyweight would then have lunch before returning back to the gym for more boxing.
This consisted of sparring, bag work, pads with his trainer, and an hour on the stationary bike as well as more Calisthenics.
At 5pm, Tyson would do four more sets of the same calisthenics routine and then slow shadow boxing, focusing on just ONE technique.
Two hours later he would have dinner, before his final session of the day at 8pm, which was a light 30 minutes on the exercise bike for recovery.
Tyson was in bed at 9pm, watching TV or studying fight films before hitting the hay.

And Fury was trained by his father from the age of ten but never really had a passion for it.
That was until Rahman shockingly knocked out Lewis in their 2001 thriller in South Africa.
Fury, now 34, told iFL TV: “My first ever memory of boxing – like massive memory – was Lennox Lewis versus Hasim Rahman. The first one.
“We waited up all night to watch it and whack – he got chinned out in a few rounds didn’t he? And that was my first real, massive boxing memory.

“Obviously I’d been watching boxing way before that, but not really ever interested in it until that moment.”
Fury was just 13 at the time but did not have his first bout in the ring until another three years later.
He weighed 14 STONE aged 14 and as a result was banned from junior amateur boxing.
Fury had a short 32-4 record in the unpaid ranks before turning professional aged 20 in 2008.

Fast forward 14 years and he is the No1 heavyweight in the world, unbeaten in 34 fights and twice reigning as champion.
Fury revealed the first time he watched greatness in the ring up close was when Ricky Hatton beat Kosta Tszyu in 2005.
He said: “The first massive fight I went to was probably Ricky Hatton versus Kosta Tszyu, that’s as big as it gets.
“It was in Manchester and it was for the belt against a legendary champion.
“I believe there was about three or four other future world champions in there that night.
“Me, Crolla, Terry Flanagan, all from Manchester and all went on to win the world title. We were all inspired by “The Hitman” all of us.”

Tyson Fury would have been ‘DESTROYED’ by Lennox Lewis as Irish boxing legend Barry McGuigan compares careers

TYSON FURY would have been “DESTROYED” by Lennox Lewis, said Irish boxing legend Barry McGuigan. Fury has the chance to prove himself as the undisputed heavyweight king if he secures a fight against Oleksandr Usyk in 2023.

It gives the winner the chance to reign as the first ever four-belt heavyweight champion.
The last to lay claim as undisputed boss was Lewis, when the WBO was not recognised as a major title.
And although the division has moved on with the times, McGuigan insisted not even Fury could stand up to Lewis.
He tweeted: “I don’t hate anyone but I know Lennox Lewis would have destroyed Fury, compare their resumé there is no comparison, those are the facts.”

Fury, 34, is unbeaten in his career as a two-time heavyweight champion.
His only blemish is a disputed draw against Deontay Wilder, 37, in 2018, a result many felt was controversial.
He later beat Wilder twice, adding to his iconic win over Wladimir Klitschko, 46, in what was considered a shock in 2015.
Fury also has three victories over Derek Chisora, 38, to his name and a brutal knockout over rival Dillian Whyte, 34.

Lewis meanwhile, who announced his retirement in 2004, hung up his gloves with a 41–2–1 record.
Unlike Fury, he was beaten but the KO losses against Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman were avenged.
It means Lewis beat every man he ever shared the ring with, including Evander Holyfield after their disputed 1999 draw.
The British legend also beat Klitschko’s brother Vitali, Mike Tyson, David Tua, Shannon Briggs and Frank Bruno among others.

Anthony Joshua needs a ‘stricter camp’ after having it too ‘easy and quick’, says former trainer Robert Garcia

ANTHONY JOSHUA needs a “stricter camp” after having it too “easy and quick”, his former trainer Robert Garcia said.AJ is on the scout for a new training team in America following consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk.

After the first, in September 2021, Joshua parted ways with long-time cornerman Rob McCracken, who led him to gold in the amateurs and pros.
He replaced McCracken with esteemed US mastermind Garcia, but following rematch defeat to Usyk, 35, the two have now also split.
The ex-world champion has opened up about the separation and revealed what Joshua, 33, must do ahead of his return.
Speaking in Spanish to Izquierdazo and translated by Boxing247, Garcia said: “Everything was kind of easy and quick for him.

“He thought that that was the right way to do it, that he didn’t need to do it in another way.
“But when the time comes for this kind of fight, with fighters of a higher level, tougher fights, harder fights, you need a stricter camp, where he follows indications.”
Joshua was spotted training in Virgil Hunter’s California gym, where unbeaten American Andre Ward, 38, carved out his Hall of Fame career.
More recently, AJ was in Texas to link up with trainer of the year candidate Derrick James, who coaches Errol Spence Jr, 32.

Joshua brought Garcia over to England for his camp before losing to Usyk a second time.
But he has been urged to set up shop in the States full-time and start from fresh.
Garcia said: “I feel that he is taking the decision about coming to the United States.
“Because, if he came to talk with trainers such as Derrick James, who is very busy here in the United States, I don’t think that AJ’s plan is to take him to Europe, maybe he is planning to stay here.
“And I will be happy to see him here, even if he is not working with me. AJ needs a change, a completely new change to what he is not used to.”
